Chapter 12
Chapter 12
Simon and I carried Luke into Magnus' place, following him quickly as he lead the way into the pervious room that Jace and I were in. Clary followed behind, worry draped over her face.
"What happened?" Magnus asked, walking over and grabbing a sheet before laying it over his couch.
"He was attacked!" Simon said, struggling to carry Luke's weight as he got heavier.
"He needs a warlock. He needs you," Clary said, shutting the doors behind us.
Magnus patted the couch, "Put him here." Between the four of us, we managed to lay Luke down, his eyes closed as he seemed to be trapped in a dream. His head shook as he spoke with worry. "Where are you? I can't find you. Where are where are you?"
My hand lightly moved over his bald head, trying to calm him down, "Shhh, Luke. It's going to be okay."
"Jocelyn! Jocelyn," Luke cried, thrashing slightly.
"No, Luke, it's Clary and Faith," Clary said, kneeling next to me. Her hand took Luke's, causing his eyes to open into slivers as he got a glimpse of us.
"You both have to listen to me. I have to tell you, just in case-" Luke said in between breaths.
Clary shook her head, not dare taking any last words, "No, don't even say it, don't."
Luke shook his head, "No, listen to me..." His voice trailed off as he seemed to slip out of consciousness again, failing to tell us what he wanted to so badly.
Magnus spoke up behind us, seeming to stand next to Simon. "Was he bitten by an alpha?"
"Yeah, why?" Simon asked.
Magnus moved in between Clary and I, laying his hands on Luke's shoulders. He began to count down, "Three, two, one." Suddenly, Luke sits up a little, his eyes changing to a glowing green, as he let's out a yell that turns in a howl. As his body collides with the couch again, he starts to thrash around.
"Oh, my God," Clary says, shocked and worried. Between her and me, we're able to hold him, but struggle as Magnus stands. He walks over to a shelf, grabbing one thing after another. He sets them on a table in a rush before walking towards the exit.
"Where do you think you're going?" Simon asked.
Magnus points to Luke, ordering the three of us to hold him down as he disappears from the room. A minute later and he returns with a large bowl, spoon, and more ingredients. He throws it all on the table, grabbing one of the glass containers, and digging the spoon inside of it.
Rushing over, Magnus shoves the spoon full of green stuff down Luke's throat. "We don't have a lot of time. It'll take a few moments to take effect."
"What's happening to him?" I asked, still holding Luke's struggling body down with Simon and Clary's help.
"Random werewolf transformation. It's a side effect of the poison in the alpha bite," Magnus says. As soon as Magnus said that Luke's thrashing body started to calm until he was laying still on the couch. His breathing was still heavy and shaky, but his body laid still.
We used that moment to patch up all of Luke's wounds which were mostly on his upper body. Luckily, thanks to watching so many doctor shows in hopes of finding out what was wrong with me, I had an idea of what to do. Anything I struggled with, Magnus showed me how.
Once Luke was all wrapped up, Simon and Clary sat on the other couch, talking while I staid by Luke's side.
Not ever seeing my father, Luke sort of took that place. When I'd get sick, he would always fix me some soup and keep an eye on me while my mother was away. We had some great conversations. I'd hate to see those end.
Magnus, who was running around like a mad man, trying to grab things left and right, waked over. He placed a piece of bark in Luke's mouth, explaining, "The bark will stop the transformation for now, but Luke needs an antidote to stop the poison in his system. And I don't have all the ingredients here."
Clary stood up, "Just tell me what you need and how to get it."
"No, you two have to stay here. Luke will need you if he wakes up," Magnus said, pointing to both Clary and I.
"When he wakes up," I correct Magnus, eyeing him slightly. Magnus looked over at me, his eyes showing me that he didn't have much hope. That was okay, because I had enough hope for him.
Simon stands up next to Clary, "I'll go."
Suddenly, Jace walks into the room, his nose bleeding slightly as he joins the conversation, "I'll go."
"Oh, my God, Jace. What happened?" I asked, moving away from Luke. I walked over to Jace, putting my hands on his cheeks as I see his nose bleed like he was just in a fight.
Jace sighed, "I'm fine. Just, Luke's car may have found its way into a pole while I was stashing it. I don't do mundane driving." As he spoke, he wiped away the blood, his nose seeming to stop bleeding.
Simon scuffed, "Yeah, apparently."
My hands drop from Jace's face as he glares at Simon, but my feet don't move from in front of him. "What do you need for the antidote?"
"Hey, I got this," Simon pushed his hand out, clearly irritated with Jace.
Magnus spoke up, looking at Jace, "Phoenix eyes, moon salt, and Idris fulgurite."
Simon shrugged, talking like it was just a casual trip. "One trip to the pharmacy, it'll take two seconds."
Jace, completely ignoring Simon, said, "I know a guy."
Immediately, my nerves started to pick up at the thought of Jace leaving again. It sounded so childish, but I didn't want him to go, at least not without me. God, I remember seeing people act like this in shows and movies and thinking they were ridicules, now I find myself being that person.
"Wait, you're leaving? I'm coming with you then."
"You need to stay here, it'll be safer," Jace said, his head turning towards me. Though his eyes revealed to me how much he didn't want to leave me.
I object, counteracting his words with my own, "I'm safer with you."
Jace went silent, seeming to find truth in that statement. But his begging eyes looked at me, hoping I'd read the hidden lines and not make this harder than it needs to be. Magnus saw this and added something to his grocery list, "One more thing. I need Alexander."
Shaking his head slightly in confusion and turning towards Magnus, Jace asked, "Uh, why do you need Alec?"
"Virgin Shadowhunter energy," Magnus said, but even then I could see the BS in his words.
Though, Simon couldn't, mumbling, "That explains so much."
Sighing, Jace looked at the ground, "Um, Alec, yeah I can't."
I could see it in his posture, his actions, his words, that Jace hadn't forgiven him for letting Clary and I get kidnapped. But, they were like brothers, meaning they had to put that to the side right now. My voice spoke up, grabbing Jace's eyes, "Jace, just ask, please. It wasn't his fault."
Although it takes him a hesitant moment, Jace nods, "Alright, fine."
Simon nods, turning to go, "Great, let's go."
Jace catches Simon's arm, glaring lightly at him, "Not you."
"Oh, I'm going."
A sigh leaves my lips. I understand why Jace wants to go alone, but I would also feel better if someone, even Simon, would go with him. "Just... let him go with you. And be careful. And be back soon."
Jace looks defeated but nods, "I will, I promise." He suddenly puts his hand on the back of my head, pulling it forward and kissing the top of it in a soothing manner. By the way he walked off with Simon, the action was something that he just did, barley giving it a second thought.
But to me, it comforted every nerve in my body.
With Simon and Jace gone, Clary was left to talk to Magnus while I returned to Luke. Instantly, he started mumbling again, seeming to get drawn back into a dream. Only this dream, I recognized.
"You, you can't do this, Jocelyn," Luke mumbled, shaking slightly.
My eyes pulled together in confusion, my ears listening to his mumbling words. "Their marks, have shown. You'll kill her," Luke said, his head shaking back and forth.
His words, perked my ears. I've heard these words, these exact words. I feel my head spin for a second before it all it me like a freight train. The memories that were filled with clouded pictures of my dad seemed to grow clearer as I thought more and more on them.
No way. It can't be true. Can it?
I'm left with a clouded mine and an unanswered question as I stand. Whether it's true or not, I won't know. At least not until Luke wakes up.
To find something to occupy me until Jace and Simon return, I join Magnus and Clary in their conversation. It seemed like they were talking about Valentine, The Circle, and our mother."
"When I first heard about your father, around the time he and Jocelyn first got together, long before the Uprising and The Circle, Valentine elevated the Morgenstern name to be synonymous with virtue. And your mother was at his side. But by the time my people came to know him, barely two years later his name had become synonymous with devastation. Your mother told me it was then she first saw the signs. He killed many Warlocks that day. They never found all the bodies. We'd all stood with the Clave for centuries."
"How could that not matter to him?" Clary asked, confusion draped in her voice.
I leaned against one of the pillars of the room, my arms crossed as I listened to their conversation.
Magnus grabbed a glass, pouring some type of alcohol liquid inside of it. "He was obsessed with ensuring purity of blood. Convinced that the impurities were a threat to peace."
"He was the threat to peace," I commented, making Clary nod in agreement.
"Mad men rarely make sense. Mostly, they just hate. And he hated the Downworlders, for the gifts that we possess that he could not have," He paused, holding out a drink towards me, only for me to shake my head I decline. Magnus took the drink himself, taking a sip as he said, "He hated us enough to kill us all."
I could see it in his eyes that he was recalling those memories, seeming to bring a dark cloud over him for a minute.
Clary shook her head, looking down at her hands in sadness. "Ever since our mother was kidnapped, and the Shadow World invaded our lives, so many Downworlders have helped us, not even thinking about what it might cost them." Her head rose, looking at Magnus with a questionable look, "How could Valentine not see good in any of them?"
Waving his drink around, Magnus answered, "He was blinded by his ambition."
"Why didn't the Clave stop him?" I asked, not understanding why no one would put a bullet through this guy or something.
Magnus sighed, seeming to nod lightly in agreement before shrugging, "He was clever. He and his followers, they managed to convince the Clave that the Downworlders they killed on their special missions had violated the Accords in some way. Complete fabrications."
"How could the Clave not see?" Clary asked, seeming to join me on how stupid these guys sounded.
"Shadowhunters believe in the Law as absolute. They could never conceive of one of their own going astray," Magnus said, lightly rolling his eyes at his own words.
Clary shook her head, her eyes filling with anger. "My father didn't go astray, Magnus. He went insane."
"What happened back then is happening again. The Clave refuses to believe that Valentine's a threat. Nineteen years ago, their lack of vision allowed the Circle to almost decimate the entire Shadow World."
"That was the Uprising?" Clary asked, recalling that word being used before.
Magnus nodded, "Yes. Valentine wanted to create a new Shadowhunter army. And for that, he needed the Mortal Cup. He knew it would be on display at the signing of the Accords as a show of the Clave's power. He seized the opportunity to accomplish everything he ever wanted. Destroy the Accords, murder Downworlders, and secure the Cup."
Clary shook her head, her hand gesturing over to me as she looked at Magnus. "How could our mom and Luke be a part of something like this?"
This time, Magnus was the one to shake his head, seeming to see the misunderstood in the conversation. "Jocelyn and Luke tried to prevent the Uprising. They tried to change Valentine's mind about Downworlders. If it wasn't for your mother and Luke, the Circle would have won. Everything Jocelyn did, she did to save the people she'd sworn to protect. She took her oath as a Shadowhunter seriously."
My eyebrows pulled together in confusion, "Then why did she give it up?"
Magnus looked over at me, his words directed to me. "Because the one thing in the world she loved more, was you." My mouth parted slightly, the dates of all of this happening seeming to make sense now in my head.
Magnus added, "She had to protect you, and then Clary."
"So, Valentines my dad?" I asked, my eyes going wide. How could my mother be with someone else if she was still fighting Valentine?
Magnus shook his head, scrunching his face up, "No, no."
"But you know who is?" I asked, realizing that before Magnus had claimed he didn't know. But by the look on his face now as he stared at me in silence told me otherwise. Or told me he at least had an inkling."
Before something could be said about my question, Luke's rustles started up again, grabbing our attention.
"Luke, Luke?" I said, moving over to him with Clary and Magnus hot on my tale. Luke's rustles started to turn to thrashes again, causing Clary and I to grab onto him again.
"The magic's wearing off," Magnus said, looking over our shoulders.
"It was our fault. It was our fault!" Luke thrashed, being stuck in a dream once again.
Clary looks over her shoulder at Magnus, exclaiming, "He's getting worse!"
Magnus lightly pushes Clary away, kneeling in front of Luke. He snapped his fingers before pushing his hands in a downward motions. His purple smoke flew from his hands, wrapping around Luke like a cocoon. I could see it in Magnus' eyes that he was struggling a little, seeming to fight against Luke's thrashing body.
"What do we do?" I asked, looking at Magnus next to me.
"I can't leave him, but the potion stock still needs Komodo scale. Find it, add the rest when they get here. You'll have to feed it to Luke," Magnus says, his voice slightly shaky as he struggles.
"What about you?" Clary asked worriedly.
"I'll hold on as long as I can," Magnus says, his eyes and attention focused on Luke.
Quickly standing, I rush over to the mixing bowl, looking around before finding a jar labeled "Komodo Scales". I grab it, throwing a scale into the bowl and mixing it as Alec walks in.
Immediately Alec runs over to Magnus, helping him fight against Luke's transformation. Seconds later, Jace and Simon rush in, both calling out different names.
"Faith!" Jace yells.
"Clary!" Simon yells.
Leaving my side, Clary runs over to Jace, asking him, "Do you have it all?"
"Yeah," Jace nods, quickly handing over the ingredients. Clary rushes back over to me, my hands quick to grab the stuff from her as I hand over the spoon. I throw what's needed still into the bowl, letting Clary mix it all for a second.
I grab a small cup, taking the spoon from Clary and filling it. Once there's no space left in the cup, I leave the bowl and rush over to Luke. Clary grabs Luke's head, tilting it and opening his mouth while I spill the cups contents into him.
Magnus releases Luke, leaning against Alec as he catches his breath.
We all wait, watching Luke as he calms to a normal breath. His eyes soon open, looking up at Clary and I and smiling, "Faith. Clary."
Both Clary and I smile in triumph, hugging each other in relief and joy. Luke was going to be fine. We weren't going to lose another person to the darkness of death. Not today at least.
Once Luke was feeling better, Magnus had him moved into one of the bedroom, leaving him to rest.
My assumptions were still on my mind, pushing me towards his room and through the closed door. Luke was sitting up, most of his upper half wrapped in bandages. My body leans against the doorframe, my words grabbing his attention, "How are you feeling?"
"We both know that's not why you're here," Luke said, looking at me like he already knew what was running through my mind. Like he knew what he had said was giving everything away.
I nodded, "Your right, it's not." My feet carried me inside, moving until I was right in front of his bed. My arms staid crossed as I looked at Luke. Never before had I caught any similarities. Sure we were two different shades of skin, but our eyes seemed to match. And I'm sure if he grew out hair, they'd match as well too.
"Are you my father?" I asked?
Even expecting the question, Luke looked at his hands with a sigh. He rounded up his courage, saying one word to confirm it all.
"Yes."
I shook my head, dropping my arms in confusion and slight anger. "Why didn't you tell me? Why didn't I remember until now?"
"Jocelyn covered up your memories, blocking me out of them," Luke explained.
"Why?"
Luke pauses, seeming to study me to see if I'd freak out over the answer or take it with consideration of the past facts. Either way, he moved on. "Jocelyn was scared of Valentine. I was her trusted friend. She told me everything. Sometimes, more then she meant too. We fell in love. One night, that was all it took. When Jocelyn left, I found her. That's when she told me she was pregnant. So we hide, lived our lives. And when you were born, we both agreed it be best to keep you hidden from the Shadow World."
"But Clary..." I started, not understanding how my mother could leave Valentine, have me, and then still have Valentine be Clary's father but not mine.
"Jocelyn went back, found Valentine, tried to reason with him one last time. It didn't work."
I scuffed, my eyes looking off, "Clearly."
It was then I got my own history lesson. "After Clary was born, it became more of a fear that Valentine might find us. And when you met Jace... " his voice trailed off for a second as a smile crossed his face. "I wanted you to be happy. I knew what would happen if we didn't let you go. But your mother believed that somehow Valentine would find out and find us. So she pushed it away, buried it so deep inside of you that you didn't even know it was there."
As Luke spoke, the pieces started to form in my head, making sense.
"And then she sent you away," I added.
Luke quickly shook his head, "No. She was right." I looked at Luke confused. "You and Jace, when you met, let out this string of power. Something I had never felt or smelt before. That power carried out into the world. Someone had heard about it, came knocking on our doorstep. It was Dot."
My mouth parted in shock, but didn't speak in fear of missing something.
"After that, I realized how close we were getting to being caught. So I left, steered them in a different direction for a while."
"And then when they were far enough away, you came back," I said, almost finishing his words like I had lived them. I had lived them, just didn't remember them. Even now, my mind still ran fuzzy with things.
Luke nodded, confirming my thoughts as he continued. "By the time I was back, you were growing up. You didn't have any memory of the Connection, of Jace, of me. So I didn't say anything. I let your mom put this different image in your head to protect you."
I shook my head, my anger seeming to get the best of me. More and more as I learned about my mother, I began to grow an anger towards her.
"My mom did all of these things to protect me. But what if she just put everyone in more danger? I mean I was in pain almost every day when she'd take my Connection away! Didn't that mean anything to her?" I asked, my arms gesturing out in different directions.
"She knew you were strong," Luke tried to calm me, instead I just gave his answer a scuff. Luke saw this and sighed, seeming to grow a straighter face. "Faith, when you met Jace this last time, what happened?"
I thought back to that day, at the club. It seemed so long ago, almost like it was a whole century ago. "He saved my life. And then I came home to the house trashed and my mom gone."
My voice stopped there, my mind seemed to electrify with the full picture. My mouth parted as my eyes looked off, my voice sounded disbelief, "I did it. Valentines men were looking for my mom, for the Cup. And when I met Jace... they could feel it. And it lured them right to us."
A gasp left my lips at the realization, my eyes turning to Luke. "Am I the reason my mom was taken?"
Luke shook his head quickly, putting his hands up to stop that thought. "No, no you weren't. They were close by, they had looked everywhere else."
"I just drew them in where," I said, not believing that this wasn't my fault. He just practically told me it was.
Luke sat up more, looking me dead in the eyes. "Faith, what happened, wasn't your fault. You and Jace, you were bound to be together. It was our fault that we didn't let that happen. We pushed it away, hoping it would just go away. But all we did was build it up, before watching break." His voice tried to get me to understand, and even when I was, it still felt like pain in my heart.
"I'm sorry for that. But now, you have a chance to live your life, with Jace. And don't let anyone take that away from you."
My eyes moved up to Luke's, his words processing in my head and heart. He was right, this was my chance. Mom wasn't here to stop me from being a Shadowhunter, from being with Jace. It was my turn to make my future, and I wasn't going to let it just walk past me.
Almost nodding towards Luke, I turned and walked towards the door. I paused at it, looking over my shoulder at Luke who seemed to be watching me.
I had my answer. I had the truth. I had it all. But that didn't stop this tug on my heart.
Pulling the door open, I moved back into the hallway, finding Jace leaning against one of the pillars as he waited for something. My eyes pulled together slightly in confusion, "Your still here."
Jace looked up at me, moving away from the pillar, "I wasn't going anywhere without you." I smiled, making my way until I was right in front of him. My eyes looked down at the ground, my smile fading slightly. Jace noticed, asking, "Everything okay?"
A sigh left my lips, "Luke's my dad." When my eyes lifted to meet his, I didn't see a shock expression, instead his eyes stared at me like I had just agreed to whatever was going on in his mind.
"He and my mom, they just wanted me to be safe. For all of us to be safe," My eyes went back to the ground, sadness in them. "And I ruined that."
Jace lightly takes my hand, making me look at him as he tried to get that thought out of my mind. "Hey, we didn't do anything wrong. What I feel, what we feel, it isn't wrong."
A smile crossed my face. Somehow, Jace's words had an effect on me that no other words could.
"Thank you."
"For what, running an errand?" Jace asked, seeming to crack a smile as well.
"For having my back."
Jace moved his free hand from his side to my cheek, lightly rubbing his thumb across it. "I'm always gonna have your back, Faith," Jace said. In that moment, I could feel ourselves getting drawn closer and closer together. So close, that it was hard to believe anything could stop us.
But, just like always, something did.
Clary runs out of one of the many rooms, her voice yelling out just the thing that would pull us apart. "I know where the Cup is!"
