Chapter 13
Chapter 13
"I know where the Cup is," Clary said, her face showing signs of excitement.
"Come again?" Jace asked, turning his body away from me and towards Clary. The words causing Magnus and Alec to join the group.
Clary started explaining, "The tarot cards. My mom, she must have painted them years ago, but the Mortal Cup has to be hidden inside the Ace of Cups. The card looks exactly like it."
No one said anything, all of our eyes falling at the realization of her words. It didn't click in her brain, not until she started talking with a confused look. "Wait, why aren't you guys happy about this? All we have to do is find..."
"Dot," I finished, causing Clary to pause in realization. Her mouth parted slightly as she came to realize what we all did too.
Jace spoke up, taking a small step, "If Dot had the cards when she was taken, we don't have much time. If Valentine gets his hands on the Cup-"
Magnus walks over, waving his hand as he cut's Jace off. "We know. If Valentine started creating Shadowhunters or gained control of demons, it'd be like Beyoncé riding on a dinosaur through Times Square. People would notice."
Clary looked at Magnus, "But he can control demons. We've seen it."
Scuffing slightly, Magnus corrected her, "Mmm, paying off a few demons is easy, especially since they rarely survive long enough to collect."
"Still waiting on Valentine's thank-you card," Jace said, cracking a smile at his comment as he crosses his arms. I can't help but crack a half smile too.
"Opening the gates of hell... that's a little more tricky," Magnus pointed to Clary.
"Valentine doesn't have the cards," A voice said. Footsteps matched it, entering Luke who looked like he barely had a scratch on him. Though, his bandages still wrapped around him. "I do. They're in my desk back at the precinct. When Clary and Faith went missing, I went to the loft and I cleared everything out, 'cause I didn't want the Circle to track them."
Clary's face lit up, "That's great. This should be easy."
Magnus hummed, "That's what General Custer said."
Luke nodded, "Magnus is right. Valentine has spies everywhere, even in the NYPD. We have to be discreet."
"Discreet?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. "No offense, but you look like something out of The Mummy movie," I said, gesturing to his wrapped upper body.
"We'll go in the morning. Werewolf healing, remember? This is nothing a couple of hours of beauty sleep can't fix."
Everyone looked at each other before Jace nodded, "Alright, looks like we got a plan."
"What about our mother? She'll never agree to this. And we can't go back without the girls."
There was no way I was leaving Jace, not again. Twice was already too many for me. It seemed Clary understood that as her eyes glanced over at me. She closed her still parted lips before speaking up.
"I'll go back with you. Faith and Jace can go."
"That seems a little odd considering you're the only one who can get the Cup," Alec said, gesturing over to Clary.
Clary shrugged, "Faith and Jace can bring it back to us. It'd be safer that way anyways. Besides, I know they don't want to leave each other again," Her eyes moved over to Jace and me at her last few words.
She was right. To right.
"I guess that could work," Alec said with a sigh as he rubs the back of his neck. His eyes moved over to Jace, only falling on me for a second, "You need backup, you call us. Got it?"
Jace scuffed, smiling slightly, "Always."
Although I played no witness to it, it seemed Jace and Alec had made amends with each other. Good, he needs his friend. Especially in a time like this.
We let Luke rest for a couple of hours, the night turning into day. Once he was washed, dressed, and ready, Jace and I joined him, heading out to the precinct.
Luke stopped us as we climbed out of his car, "All right, cards are on my desk. It shouldn't take long."
"All right," Jace nodded, taking a couple of steps forward to walk into the precinct only for Luke to stop him again.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa. It'll be easier to avoid unnecessary attention if I do this alone."
I reassured him, putting my hand on Jace's shoulder, "We'll wait here." Luke nodded, accepting my answer before turning and disappearing into the station.
A sigh left Jace's lips as he leaned against the car, crossing his arms, "It sounded boring anyway." I can't help but smile and shake my head at his disappointed look. Jace looked over at me, catching my action and pulling his eyes together in confusion. "What's so funny?"
"You, even when you're not trying to be," I said, my cheeks already turning to a rose pink color as I catch his eyes.
"Well, guess I better keep talking. If it means that I'll say something to make you smile," Jace flirted, his eyes locked on mine. I swear, my cheeks couldn't get any pinker even if they wanted too.
A police officer walked past us, heading inside the precinct, turning out eyes from one another. It wasn't odd, it just seemed to catch both of our attentions.
My throat cleared the lump that had been growing, my head turning to look around. "I've got a bad feeling about this. What is taking him so long?"
"I know a way we could find out. Just go in and see for ourselves," Jace said, throwing his arm towards the precinct.
"And how exactly are we going to do..." My voice trailed off as I looked at the large building before us. One of the many hallways was lit with nothing but windows, giving light to the scene I was seeing. Two guys were escorting Luke away from his office and down the hallway to the Questioning Rooms.
Jace sighed, "Just so I'm clear, he did mention something about trying to avoid attention, right? Cause from the looks of it, he's doing a terrible job."
"Circle members?" I asked?
Studding the two men, as if he could see right through the fake faces. He shook his head, "No, mundanes. Internal affairs officers."
One of my eyebrows rose, "You can tell all that just by looking at them?"
Jace smiled, his eyes looking back over towards me, "I can tell all that by reading their badges." He pulls up his sleeve, revealing one of his many ruins. "Better than binoculars," He commented before tugging his sleeve back down. "Luke had his chance. Let's go."
We used the invisible ruin in hopes of making it less obvious of what we were doing. We were able to sneak into the building, heading to the questioning room. One of the many doors opened, revealing Luke inside. His eyes caught ours but he doesn't say a word.
The two of us managed to slip past the Mundane undetected before watching the man close the door. Jace walks over to the camera, undoing it and turning the room into our own quiet room.
"Luke, what is going on?" I asked, my hands laying on the table confused. Jace moved back over, catching the empty spot next to me.
"I think I'm about to be the prime suspect in a murder investigation," Luke said with a sigh.
A sigh left my lips as well as I pushed myself up to a straighter position. "What do we do?"
"Get the cards. In my desk, bottom drawer."
"All right," I nodded, turning to leave only for Luke to stop us.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa. You can't glamour yourselves. I'm not the only Downworlder on the force, and we don't know who's working for Valentine. If anybody spots you-"
Jace cut him off, finishing his sentence, "We'd be leading them right to the Mortal Cup."
"Exactly. Better to assume that everybody has the Sight, than gamble that they don't," Luke nodded and pointed to Jace in agreement.
A sigh left my lips as I crossed my arms, looking off, "And Clary thought this would be easy?"
"You two should go, before someone catches you in here," Luke said. My eyes returned to the man before. Luke must have caught my hidden worry in them, trying to comfort me with his words, "I can handle myself. Now go."
Jace lightly grabbed my arm, tugging me back a little. As if on cue, the man from before opened the door, stepping in and questioning Luke. We used the open door to sneak out, heading back towards the office areas.
Since we didn't know who would be able to see us, we snuck into one of the supply closets.
"Really? In Here?"
"Why not?" I asked, pulling my Stele out and trying to deglamourize.
Jace sighed, shrugging before deglamourizing. I still struggle, trying to remember what to do. This causes Jace to smirk as he watches me, "You need help with that?"
"I can deglamourize myself, Jace," I said, slight irritated. Finally, I got it, smiling proudly as I looked up at Jace, "See."
Shaking his head with an admiring smile, Jace says, "Great. Now how exactly are we gonna get the cards? I doubt we can make it out of this closet without drawing attention, let alone Luke's desk and you are covered in ruins."
"Don't worry. I've got a plan," I reassured him.
"Really?" Jace asked, seeming to doubt me a little.
I nodded, "Yup, just, can't guarantee you'll like it." With that I turned, leaving the closet with a confused Jace to chase after me.
We turned, entering the main office room. There was at least 7 or eight people in there, everyone looking up at Jace and I. This plan would either be so great that it would work or so bad that it'd backfire in our faces. Either way, I had to take the risk.
Grabbing a breath, I turned, my voice coming out loud as I faced Jace. "You son of a bitch!" I yelled, throwing a slap to Jace's face. The action made Jace's mouth drop in shock as his head turned to the side.
My action made a sting in my heart. It took everything in me not to grab his cheek and apologize a hundred times to him.
I continued on, hoping that if I just continue then that feeling might go away. "Stop following me!"
Jace leaned down a little, whispering to me, "What the hell are you doing?"
Taking a step back, I dropped my mouth in shock, hoping that all of this looked believable. "Wait, what did you say? You cheated on me?" I groaned, half to make it believable while the other half was for the stinging pain in my chest.
I turn, walking over to Luke's desk. My eyes catch Jace taking a step to chase after me but two police officers stopped him. "I... ah? I did not," Jace said, looking at the two police officers.
"You will never see me at your crappy apartment again," I said, my head looking down at Luke's bottom drawer. If I looked at him right now, I'd lose myself right there and then. Then all of this would be for nothing.
"That girl means nothing to me. Nothing," Jace tried to explaining, playing with the trick. He suddenly gets escorted out by the two police officers. My eyes catch the sight, my mouth parting in shock as I watch him.
Pulling myself back to the drawer and ignoring the sting in my heart, I realize the drawer is empty. I check the top, finding the same thing.
One of the workers walked by, my head popping up and grabbing his attention, "Excuse me. Where is all of Luke's stuff?"
"IA took everything. What are you looking for?" The worker asked?
"I lost a house key and Luke normally keeps a spare in his desk, so is there any way I can get it?"
The worker sucked in a breath, "Not till he's cleared."
Laying dumb, I asked, "Cleared? Of what?"
Waving his hand in the air, the worker reassured me, "Don't worry about it. We'll get it handled."
I nodded, "Great, but I still really need that key."
The worker shrugged, looking at me sympathetic. "I'm sorry, but IA has all of Luke's things in the evidence vault upstairs."
My mind made a mental note of his words as I closed the drawer. "Okay. I guess I'll ask Clary. Thanks," I said, standing up and leaving the main room. I headed back down the hallway and to the entrance, finding Jace standing, waiting for me.
"Don't you ever, ever do that again!" Jace half yells at me, looking angry and slightly upset.
"I'm sorry, I didn't know what else to do. Are you okay?" I asked as we walk outside. The panic in my voice was clear as day to anyone, seeming to escape it's cage I've locked it in since we started this.
Jace sighed, "Yeah, just..." His voice trailed off as his feet stopped. My feet joined him, both of us standing in front of the other as Jace looked at me with almost pleading eyes. "Please don't ever do that to me again."
I nod, fully agreeing with him, "I won't, I promise."
To think how much my fake action affected me almost scares me. And clearly, Jace felt something too, seeming to shake him slightly. Next time, I'll try to go with something else. Or at least give him a heads up.
Suddenly, Alec, Izzy, and Clary walked over to us, surprising me.
"Someone call for backup?" Izzy asked with a smile. Her usual sexy outfit seemed to be changed to a more fitting, normal black outfit. It looked strange on her.
Jace nodded, turning towards them, "Yeah. What took you guys so long?"
"Funny, I was gonna ask you the same thing," Alec said.
A sigh left Jace's lips, "It's complicated."
"Did you find the Cup?" Clary asked, hope written on her face and words.
"Yeah, but then we lost it. We have to sneak back in the precinct to get it," I said, shoving my hands into my leather jacket pocket.
Alec shook his head, throwing his arms out, "This is a disaster."
Jace, seeming to talk with his hands, reassured Alec. "Hey, demon pox is a disaster. This is an inconvenience. We just need a plan. That's all."
Izzy spoke up, hoping to have an idea. "What about a glamour?"
Shaking his head, Jace crossed his arms, looking at the group before us, "We tried that. Anyone working with Valentine will see right through it."
Clary looked at Izzy, "Can we ask Magnus Bane to portal us inside?"
Alec quickly spoke up, seeming to grab everyone's attentions as he said, "No."
Izzy smirked, mumbling to herself, "That's be awkward." She straightened her posture as she looked back at the group, all of us seeming to catch her past words but no one addressed them. "Magnus can only portal us to places he's been to before."
Jace, who seemed deep in thought as we spoke, said, "I've got a great plan." He turned back towards me, as if addressing this situation only to me. "Just follow my lead. Oh, and don't worry, in my plan, no one gets slapped."
"I said I was sorry!" I exclaimed, following Jace back inside. He pulled out his phone, quickly texting something as I asked, "So, what's the plan exactly?"
"We'll head up towards the vault. Alec, Clary, and Izzy are handling the rest. All we have to do is wait for their signal, and grab the Cup," Jace said, walking over to the elevator and pushing the up button.
A small scuff rolled off my lips. Jace made this sound so easy, but in reality it would probably be one of the hardest things we'd have to do all day.
That's always how it seemed to work.
Suddenly, the elevator doors opened, revealing a man with his face deep in a folder. Jace quickly grabbed my arm, yanking me away from the open elevator and behind the wall next to it. The man walked out, barley looking up from his folder as he left.
Jace and I double check that no one is watching before climbing into the elevator. It wasn't until we had left the first floor did Jace walk over to the building buttons. He pushed the Emergency Stop button, causing the elevator to make a sudden stop and jolt slightly.
"What now? We're supposed to climb the elevator shaft and waltz in the vault unnoticed?" I joked, leaning against the wall with crossed arms.
Jace got on his tippy toes, reaching up and pushing on the ceiling tile before pushing it away to reveal the shaft. He looked down at me with a smile, "Now, why didn't I think of that?"
It comes to my realization that Jace wasn't kidding. This was his plan. My joking smile fell, my serious one seeming to take over, "Wait, you're kidding, right?"
"Remember the binoculars?" Jace asked?
I nodded, "Yeah."
Jace pulls back his shirt, revealing another ruin on his shoulder blade. My body pushes away from the wall as I get a better look, trying to stop my hands from tracing over it.
"This one's a Nyx rune. It's like night vision. You can copy mine."
"Okay," I say, sucking in a breath. I slipped off my jacket, laying it on the ground as I pull out my Stele. I reach to the back of my shoulder blade, starting the ruin only to get a little of it done before I start to struggle.
Jace, who has been watching from the corner, moves over to me, "Here." He takes my Stele, drawing the symbol on the back of my shoulder blade. The sting that usually comes with carving a ruin into your skin seems to be barely noticeable with Jace doing it.
My body seems to elite with electricity as Jace's free fingers go over the bare parts of my skin. If I could, I'd stay like this forever. Once he's finished, he doesn't pull his hands away from my skin, just looks down at me, meeting my eyes for a minute.
Suddenly, the lights go out, an alarm coming from somewhere blaring out.
"That's the signal," Jace says, moving over to the open shaft.
The darkened elevator lit itself up in my eyes like someone has switched on all the lights. "Whoa," I couldn't help but let slip through my lips as I turned my head to look at the elevator.
Jace smiled, watching me as I looked around in amazement. It wasn't until my eyes settled on him that he came back to reality. "Going up," He said, jumping and grabbing onto the ceiling before pulling himself up.
His hand reached down, taking mine as he pulled me up through the hall. A latter to our left took us up to the floor we needed to get too. We used the vent to get into the dark room, the ruin on my shoulder still giving me sight in the dark.
Luckily, no one was in here, just rows and rows of boxes on shelves.
"Jesus. I wonder how long some of this stuff has been in here," I said, my hand sliding over one of the boxes. At least two layers of dust sat on it, seeming to have made its home right there.
The sudden sound of the door opening made me quick in my actions. I pulled out my Stele, gliding it over my Glamour ruin before grabbing Jace's arm and doing the same. We both stepped back, watching a police officer with a flashlight walk in.
He scoped the room out before leaving, seeming to not have seen us.
"You're getting pretty good with your Stele," Jace nodded to the object in my hand.
I tucked it away in the back of my pants, looking around to make sure that he was it. "Well, at least we know he's not a Downworlder."
"Lucky for us," Jace says with a smile.
We continued to look around for Luke's name, only to find it towards the back of the room.
"Got it," I said, grabbing the large box and carrying it over to one of the tables. Jace followed me, staying behind me as I opened the box. Papers, pictures, and other odd and end things sat on top.
My hands grabbed one picture which consisted of my mom, Clary, and I. I grabbed the second picture, finding it just to be a picture of me. It was me opening my present that Luke gave me of a journal one year for my birthday.
Who knew, that all this time, Luke was my father. All this time, I held such hatred for my father for walking out on me. Now, turns out, he's been here all along.
I could feel Jace's eyes on me, watching my emotions run through my face.
Shaking my head and pulling me back to the task at hand, I lowered the picture and swam through the box. Sure enough, gold cards sat together at the bottom. My hand grabbed them, swiping through them as I looked for a card with a cup on it.
Sure enough, towards the bottom, my eyes caught sight on it.
Jace, looking over my shoulder, said, "That looks exactly like the Mortal Cup."
"Let's hope that it is," I said, sticking it in the back part of my pants and pulling my jacket down to cover it. I loaded the stuff back into Luke's box before Jace slipped it back in its spot.
Getting out was easier than getting in, thanks to everyone evacuating anyways because of the alarms. Police cars and people gathered around outside, seeming to light the building even in the darkness of night.
Clary, Alec, and Izzy stood outside, waiting for us as we rushed out of the building.
"Did you get it?" Clary asked, taking a step so she was in front of Alec and Izzy.
"Yup," I said, taking the Cup card out of my pocket and handing it to her. My sister smiles, looking over the card as she sucked in a deep breath. As her hand reached towards the card, Izzy's voice stopped her.
"Guys!" We all turned towards her, finding her eyes looking around nervously. The red pendant necklace pulsed around her neck, informing us that demons were close by.
Alec's eyes looked around, commenting, "Well, at least we know the demon necklace works."
"Never a dull day. Let's go, we can do this at the institute," Jace said, motioning for us to move.
We all move as a group, seeming to walk fast. It wasn't until Clary bumped into an old lady did we stop. As she took a step back to apologize to the older women, we watch as the women's head opens up like a flower. Like the same demon that attacked me at the house in the beginning.
Jace pulled out his blade, taking a couple of steps until he was right behind the women. "Grandma!" He called, causing the demon to turn. Jace quickly and simple struck the demon, turning it to ash.
Clary's eyes, bugged wide, asked, "What the hell?"
"Language. Not in front of Grandma," Jace said, gesturing towards the ash on the ground.
"How did it find us?" I asked?
Jace's voice was directed towards me, but his eyes were set on the different police officers. "I don't know... but she brought friends."
"How can you tell?" I asked, confused as I looked around. Everyone seemed normal.
A small yelp left my lips went everyone broke out into a jog. Jace's hand grabbed mine, yanking me with him. He only releases it when he speaks, "It's like seeing through a glamour. You just got to pay attention to the details."
"Behind us," Izzy said, causing me and Clary's head to turn.
"I can't see them," Clary said. For once, I wasn't the one who understood or could see everything.
My feet stop, my body turning to look at the police officers that were casually following us as if just going in the same direction. I focused on their eyes, watching their different color eyes turn to a glowing green. Just their eyes alone sent shivers up my back.
"Oh my God," I breathed out, my mouth parting in shock. Once again, I feel the electric touch of Jace as he grabs my hand again, yanking me to fast walk with the group.
"What? I can't see anything?" Clary says, still trying to keep up while also turning to look back at the cops.
All of our feet come to a stop, causing Clary to run into Alec. Three more cops with glowing green eyes start coming from in front of us.
My head turns, finding four coming from behind and three from the front. "Okay, there's too many people," I said, my eyes not able to keep up with the different people that were walking around.
"I don't say this often, but I agree with Faith. We gotta get out of here," Alec said, his eyes looking around.
"Hey, this way!" Clary yelled. She quickly turns to the right, going down the small alley. A set of large stairs face us, causing us all to race down them and towards a side door.
My feet carry me there first, my body almost slamming against the door at the sudden stop. I grab the handle, trying to open it only to fail. "It's locked," I said, everyone else in the group joining me.
Jace takes a step back, putting his hand on my stomach and pushing me to the side. He suddenly kicks the door, breaking it in. He looked over at me with a smirk, "Open sesame."
I can't help but blush, trying to hide it in a smirk as I comment, "Show off."
We all race inside, come to a hallway only to stop when we notice Alec isn't following us. He's stopped, looking towards the door, and pulling out his bow and arrow.
"Hey, what are you doing?" Jace asks?
"Holding them off. Take Faith and Clary back to the Institute," Alec responds.
Jace quickly goes over to his friend, grabbing his attention, "No, if you're staying, I'm staying. We fight together."
Alec squinted his eyes at Jace, "Don't be stupid. If the demons get the Cup, we're dead anyways."
"I'm not leaving anyone behind."
"If you stay, Faith will stay, which will make Clary want to stay. You have to go," Alec says. He was right, if Jace was staying, so was I.
Clary sighed, slightly impatient, "I know you guys are having a moment, okay? But we really have to go."
Alec nodded towards Clary, "She's right. Go."
Jace sighs before turning, leading us once again down the hallway and leaving Alec behind. The four of us rushed down the hallways, only for me to slow down a bit.
"Hold on. I'm sorry, Jace," I said with a sigh, coming to a stop.
Stopping and looking at me, Jace misread my words, "It's okay. We can take a breather."
"No, it's not that," I said, letting out a sigh. My eyes moved to my sister and Izzy who were both watching us. Izzy seemed to read my desperate eyes, nodding slightly as she turned and grabbed my sister's arm.
"We'll scout ahead."
I watched as the two left Jace and I in the hallway, Jace clearly confused. Once they were gone, my attention focused back on Jace. "I'm sorry for all the trouble I've put you through."
"You don't have to apologize to me, Faith," Jace said, acting like it was no big deal. But, in my mind, it was. Clearly Jace and the team never had to go through any of this before Clary and I. And what Clary says is up to her, but I don't want Jace to think that I'm perfectly fine with this.
A smile crossed my lips slightly as I looked at the ground. "Sadly, I don't think you can stop me."
Jace chuckles, bringing my eyes to him. His laugh. "Yeah, I'm starting to see that."
My eyes stare into his, the fact that no one was around settling in my bones. This was my chance. "Listen, there's something I've been wanting to do, for a while actually, and something always seems to come up-"
"Guys? It's pulsing!" Izzy yells up ahead, referring to the demon necklace.
A sig leaves my lips as I mumble to myself, "Like now."
The two of us joined my sister and Izzy, both of them on guard. "Getting close. Let's spread out," Izzy ordered.
Jace and Izzy both have their blades securely in their hands, stalking around the large room we ended in. Clary grabs my arms nervously, keeping her eyes on the room around her.
"Izzy, where is it?" Jace asked, his eyes fixating on the space around him which consisted on nothing.
"I don't know. It's like they're right here, but I don't see them."
They both continued to look around, both on guard but lacking the enemy. My eyes start to scan the ceiling, finding piping mazing around. That's when my eyes caught the large, creepy crawling.
It jumps from the ceiling as I yell out, "Jace!" He turns, just in time for the creature to land on him. He struggles to keep the creature away from him with his hands. Somehow, he manages to swing his blade up, letting it land on the creature and turning it to ash.
Causing Clary to release me, I ran over to Jace as he checks himself of scratches or bites.
"Are you hurt?" I asked worriedly.
"I'll live," Jace says, catching his breath as he checks the ceiling to make sure there isn't anymore.
Clary joins us, Izzy still keep an eye out. "What are those things?"
"Shax demons. They're like the bloodhounds of the Shadow World," Jace says.
"They've been tracking us," Izzy comments, her eyes set on the rooms still.
My head turned from Izzy to Jace, my question lingering for a second. "So what do we do?"
Jace is the one to respond, looking over at me mostly as he speaks. "The Institute's only a couple of blocks from here. We can't lose them, but they won't be able to track us if we split up."
"But, I don't-" Clary starts.
Cutting her off, Jace turns and looks at my sister. "Clary, you'll be fine. Just stay close to Faith. Izzy and I will draw them away."
"Jace..." My voice trails off. I don't like this. I don't want to do this. We could get lost, get hurt. They could get hurt. What if someone get's taken?
So many things swarm my mind that I almost miss Jace's words. "No matter what happens, just keep running."
The sound of snarling up ahead of us, where we just came from, fills our ears and makes us turn.
"They're coming," Izzy said, stating the obvious.
"Run!" Jace ordered.
I do as Jace says, despite everything in me telling me not too. My hand grabs Clary's arm, pulling her as we turn and run in a new direction. We race through two rooms before reaching another hallway. Only this hallway splits into two different directions.
"Which way do we go?" Clary asks nervously.
The sound of snarling again, only this time closer, makes me turn. Sure enough, two of those Shaz Demons are creeping their way into the hallway. I lightly push Clary behind me, reaching into my jacket pocket and pulling out my blade.
"Go, Clary. Get to the institute."
"You've had that this whole time?" Clary asks, wide eyed as she looks down at my blade.
I shrug, mumbling out a, "Sort of." How am I supposed to say that I didn't have it and then magically it showed up in my pocket like someone had slipped it in there? Like Jace had slipped it in there.
"Now, go, Clary," I ordered, gripping my blade in my two hands.
"But, Faith, we're supposed to stick together," Clary tries to object.
"I said go! Get the Cup to the institute!" I yell at my sister. I don't turn to face her, but I know she has left when her footsteps echo down one of the hallways.
The things you do as a big sister.
Snarling and hissing, the two Shaz Demons charged towards me, back to back. The first one jumps for me, causing my hand to swing my blade up and cut the demon in half. The second one used that moment to jump on me, throwing me to the ground.
I felt it's snarling, demonic face try to grab at my flesh, only for my hands to stop it. I struggled against the creature, trying to get control of the creature and my blade. It wasn't until I threw the creature over my head did I finally get an advantage.
Quickly, I rolled over, landing on my hands and knees as I striked the demon. It screamed as it turned to ash, seeming to be surprised by my action.
Catching my breath as I stood, I turn, facing the two different hallways. I settle on the left, jogging down it in hopes of catching up with Clary. It isn't until I've zig zagged down three hallways and another room do I come to realization that I went down the wrong hallway.
I walk into the second room, surprised when I see the back of Jace.
"Jace?" I asked, surprised and confused that he'd be here. Maybe I made a circle? Maybe he came from a different area and we both met here?
Turning, Jace looks at me, "Faith." He jogs over to me, my eyes catching the gash on the side of his head that is lightly breathing.
"You're hurt!" I exclaim, my hand reaching up to brush near it.
"I'll be all right," Jace reassures, pulling his head back. "You okay?"
I nod, my eyes moving from his gash to him as I lower my hand to my side. "Yeah, I'm fine. Barely, but-"
Jace cuts me off, sounding worried, "What happened?"
I motion behind me, "Two of the Shax demons cornered Clary and me. I told her to go on ahead. My instincts kicked in and I, managed to kill both of them." Even I was surprised by my own words, coming to realization on what I had just done.
In Jace's words, I was bad ass.
Jace smiled, "Faith, you're amazing. I always knew you could do it. Now where's the Cup?"
"Clary has it, she's headed back to the institute," I respond.
"Then we better go there too," Jace says, turning to walk away.
Enough of this. No one's here, and if someone shows up I'll just tune them out. I've already lost Jace once today, and I wasn't about to do it again without doing this.
I grabbed his hand, pulling him back as I said, "Wait." As he turns to me, I quickly lean in, pinning my lips to his as I kiss him. I expect to feel fireworks. To feel that rush of electricity that echoes my body just by a simple touch. To feel safe and warm.
Instead, I feel nothing but cold, dead.
This isn't Jace. I can feel it. This isn't him. He's not even here, he's somewhere else. He's looking for me.
Without hesitation, I pull out my blade again which was secured away during my job around here. I pierce Jace's stomach, causing him to release his lips from me and gasp. A few seconds later he bursts into ash, conforming my thoughts.
My mind races for a second, second guessing myself. But by the way I feel, I know I've done the right thing.
I jump when I hear someone call my name, "Faith!" I quickly turn towards the voice, pointing my blade out at the person. Luke is standing there, immediately putting his hands up in defense.
"Stop! How do I know you're Luke?" I ask, slightly nervous.
Luke freezes, trying to calm me down with his words. "I got you a collection of purple pens two years ago for your birthday because purple is your favorite color." I let out a sigh of relief at his words, lowering and putting away my blade. "What happened?"
"A shapeshifting demon tried to pretend he was Jace. Almost got me, except..." I said, my eyes looking at the ash pile on the ground.
"You could feel it," Luke finished, making me look up at him. "It's the connection. You two can point each other anywhere."
I nodded, seeming to make sense. "How'd you know where I was?" I asked, raising another question.
Luke motioned behind him, "I ran into Alec, then Clary. She said you might be down here. Thought you might need some help. Looks like you took care of it yourself."
"And Clary?" I asked, hoping she made it out safely so that none of this was for nothing.
"Headed back to the institute with Alec."
I let out a sigh of relief, nodding, "Great. Let's get out of here before more demons decide to show up, shall we?" My feet start to carry me past Luke, ready to head in the direction he had just came from until he stops me.
"Don't worry. I got the pack on the lookout. If there's any other demons, we'll take care of them."
Looking at Luke, I smiled, "You sent the whole pack to save me?"
"I sent the whole pack to protect you," Luke corrects in a meaningful tone. I look at the ground, my smile from before fading slightly the more I looked at it. Luke caught this, seeming to read my mind on my hidden thoughts.
"Faith, I know you've lived your entire life thinking your father walked out on you. But I haven't. I'm right here, always have been, always will be."
Luke's words comforted me some. I don't think I'm at the point to call him dad yet. Maybe I won't ever be. But, he is here. He always will be.
I nod, reassuring him, "I know." My head motioned back in the direction I was head, "We should go."
"Come on," Luke said, setting his hand on my back lightly as he gestured me into the direction to go. Turns out, I passed the exit twice.
And people think I'm smart.
Luke walked me back to the Institute, leaving me out front. No words were said, just a smile and a nod as I headed inside. Immediately, I head for the main computer room. Already I can here Jace's voice, noticing him ordering Shadowhunters.
"Right now, Faith is the only thing that matters."
"Jace!" I call as I enter the room. He turns, catching sight of me. He quickly jogs over to me, meeting me halfway as he wraps his arms around me. I can feel his body relax as he holds me in his arms.
I smile as I pull away, "We did it. We got the Cup."
Jace smiled but shook his head, "I don't care about the Cup. When I came out of the tunnels, I didn't see you. I was worried something might have happened."
"There was a demon. Shapeshifter. It looked just like you," I said, nodding towards him.
"You all right?" Jace asked, noticing my eyes settle slightly.
I nod, shaking any negative thoughts from my head, "Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine."
"And the demon?"
"I sent him straight back to hell," I said with a proud smile. Jace chuckled slightly at my quick change of emotions. His eyes turned to a studying one, still smiling though.
"How'd you know it wasn't me?"
"I just, knew," I said, not sure how to explain it. The only way to is to have him face the same thing and see if he feels what I felt. Then, he's just know too.
Jace rose an eyebrow, "Really? Kind of a risk, wasn't it?"
Sarcastically, I roll my eyes. "Well, this may come as a surprise, but I actually do listen to some of the things you tell me. You just have to pay attention to the details."
Jace let out a sigh, nodding as he smiled. "Yeah, well, I told you the first time we met, you have the Sight. You're a Shadowhunter, just like the rest of us."
I couldn't take it anymore. I cut him off.
My lips met his, surprising him for a second as I caught him off guard. It wasn't until his lips kissed me back did I feel it. The fireworks. The Electricity shocking my body awake and charging it to full battery. The safeness. The warmth.
One of Jace's hands touched my neck while the other touched the side of my face, passionately kissing me as if it were to save his life.
Wrapping my own arms around his waist, I couldn't help but feel the same way. To feel like this kiss that had taken far too long, was saving our lives. Would continue to save our lives.
And I had no complain about it.
Sorry it took so long to update. As you can see it was a long chapter and I've been super stressed lately. None the less, an update will be provided!
On other notices. THEY KISSED! I hope you guys liked it. Up top you'll notice the scene from the show where Clary and Jace kissed. If you picture Faith being in Clary's shoes and think about the Connection it's even more powerful!
Agree or is it just me? lol
