Chapter 21

"Multiple personalities?"

Before going to the Musashi shrine for the gang meeting, Chifuyu explains the reason to Baji. Baji is stunned when he hears about it. Chifuyu explains that simply put, multiple personality disorder is when a person has different personalities inside them that the main personality cannot control. When Baji hears the cause of this condition, he's lost for words and lowers his head.

"Takemichi's time-traveling journey must have been filled with a lot of painful events that tortured his mind; he couldn't have just developed a psychological disorder out of nowhere."

"Takemichi has always been normal, right? But when you got stabbed by Kazutora, Takemichi lost control and became that violent person."

The more Chifuyu speaks, the more he believes his theory is correct.

"Always smiling like that, how can you tell if he's really okay or not?"

It is rare for Chifuyu to be the one urgently wanting a gang meeting, but since it involves Takemichi, everyone gathers quickly. When they arrive, they see Chifuyu, Baji, and even Kazutora there. There is a slight hesitation, but the past is behind them. They act normally with Kazutora, although he remains a bit withdrawn. They understand that it will take time for Kazutora to reintegrate, and it can't be forced.

"Chifuyu! Is something wrong with Takemitchy?"

Mikey sits in his usual spot, feeling much better after meeting Takemichi. Chifuyu hesitates a bit before speaking, as he is trying to figure out what to say. Takemichi had told Chifuyu not to tell anyone else about his being from the future.

"I can explain why Takemichi acted so strangely during the fight with Valhalla," Chifuyu says, revealing what he had told Baji and their theories about the situation. Although it's bad news, there is a silver lining.

Kazutora, who had believed that Takemichi truly wanted to kill him, now realizes that it wasn't Takemichi but another personality. Takemichi never wanted to kill him, which brings a small sense of warmth back to Kazutora. The others also feel relieved, as they had been worried about seeing a different side of Takemichi. Despite their time together, they had started to doubt whether Takemichi was hiding his true self and pretending with them.

But Takemichi isn't hiding his true self; he is hiding his pain. Hearing this makes them feel guilty for doubting him.

"I feel both relieved and worried," Mikey says, clasping his hands together. "Takemitchy is still the Takemitchy we know, but I realize that I'm not close enough to understand what he is enduring. I've always seen the weight on his shoulders but never understood why."

Chifuyu and Baji know the reason and therefore feel pity for that little guy, as he bears the heavy responsibility of saving everyone's future. But knowing doesn't mean understanding fully, which makes it even more frustrating.

"I really want to do something for him, he is our benefactor," Mitsuya says.

"Takemitchy saved me once, this time I have the chance to repay him," Draken says with a smile.

"I like Takemichi too, so I want to help him," Smiley adds.

"Me too," Angry chimes in.

"Me as well," and then each person speaks up.

Mikey smiles, "Takemitchy is a treasure of Touman, we will do everything for him."

Everyone nods in agreement with what Mikey says.

"His condition shouldn't be known by anyone outside of us. Takemichi hasn't seen a real doctor yet, and I'm afraid he will feel ashamed," Chifuyu warns everyone. Moreover, if this information leaks, someone might use it against him.

"Next time we have a whole gang meeting, we need to straighten out the others again. Last time I punched some guys, but they haven't shut up. This time, if anyone mentions what happened during the battle with Valhalla, I'll break their teeth and push them into the river," Baji says, cracking his knuckles.

"So, our plan to help Takemichi will be like this," Chifuyu says, taking charge.

Regarding Takemichi, after everyone leaves, he needs to find a way to make his mom forgive him and not force him to leave Touman. First, he has to get her to talk to him, so he decides to use his ultimate weapon: wheedling.

"Mom... are you really going to ignore your son?"

"Mom, I'm sorry."

"Mom, please!"

Takemichi calls out to his mom hundreds of times until his voice is hoarse, and she finally snaps out of frustration.

"You ungrateful child, what were you thinking when you stabbed yourself like that? Are you crazy? Do you ever think about your mom? Last week you were beaten and ended up in the hospital, and this week you stabbed yourself. How can I bear this?"

As she yells at him, tears fall from her eyes. Seeing his mom like this, Takemichi feels extremely guilty and starts crying too.

"I'm... sorry. At that time, I..."

Takemichi can't finish his sentence, afraid that if he says more that it was his only way, his mom will get even angrier. His mom hugs him tightly.

"Don't do something so stupid again. The one who hurts the most is me, not your friends."

He hugs his mom back, repeatedly apologizing through his tears. They cry together for a long time. When they finally let go, he's exhausted from crying.

"Mom... Mom..."

Takemichi wants to tell his mom not to make him leave Touman, but it's hard to say. She knows what he wants to say and sighs.

"Don't worry, I won't force you to leave your friends."

Takemichi looks up at his mom in surprise and joy.

"Your friends even knelt down, begging me to forgive them and not make you leave their gang. Even if my heart were made of stone, I couldn't resist that, and besides, you wouldn't have left anyway."

Takemichi is even more surprised. His friends in Touman did that for him? He feels both scared and touched. His mom continues.

"But if you get hurt again, I'll deal with you first, then your friends."

He feels grateful to his mother but also scared by her stern, threatening look.

Takemichi needs to stay in the hospital a bit longer. The next morning, Mitsuya brings his two younger sisters along with Hakkai to visit him. Luna and Mana, well, he admits the two little girls are as cute as angels, but during their first meeting, they defeat Takemichi by calling him "stupid face" and stealing his Hina away, making him really doubt Mitsuya's upbringing. However, he doesn't know if the two little ones have been told to behave today, but they just hide behind their big brother, no longer attacking him. Only when he greets them first do they respond and introduce themselves.

"I brought porridge for you," Mitsuya says.

Mitsuya places a thermos on the table. Hakkai, meanwhile, brings along a bag filled with all kinds of food and drinks.

"Our big brother wakes up early to cook porridge for Takemichi," Luna says, sounding a little jealous.

"Yeah, really early," Mana adds. Takemichi looks a bit bewildered at Mitsuya, who is smiling gently at him.

"Thanks, I'll enjoy it," he says.

"If you want, I'll cook for you every day. When you're better, I'll make some other dishes too," Mitsuya says.

Normally, Hakkai would say, "Taka-chan, that's not fair, I want some too," but today he doesn't react, just stands there giggling, then takes out a bunch of food. Takemichi sees that they are high-end, ridiculously expensive items he has never dared to buy. He widens his eyes.

"If there's anything you like to eat, just tell me, I'll bring it next time," Hakkai says to him.

Takemichi waves his hand dismissively. They usually treat him really well, but this kind of pampering makes Takemichi a bit scared.

"Thank you both, but just coming to hang out with me is enough, no need to buy so much," Takemichi says.

He takes some snacks and gives them to Luna and Mana first, then gently pats their heads with a warm smile. "Thanks for visiting me."

The two girls' eyes sparkle as they reply, "Thank you, Takemichi! Get well soon! Our big brother worries about you a lot."

Unlike before, the two little girls now see the big brother in front of them as both gentle and sweet, different from how he usually teases them.

"Look at that! Just two snacks and he's already won them over. Those two are usually so stubborn," Hakkai teases, pointing at the two kids.

"Who are you calling stubborn? Stop clinging to our big brother, you leech!" Luna snaps back fiercely.

"Where did you learn to say 'leech' like that? Taka-chan, look at these two," Mitsuya laughs sheepishly. "Haha, hey, don't look at me, I have no idea"

Mitsuya sits next to Takemichi and starts peeling an apple for him. Seeing Takemichi staring at the apple slice, he holds up a piece in front of him.

"Hakkai bought the apples. They seem sweet. Want to try a piece?"

Without hesitation, Takemichi opens his mouth and leans forward to take a bite from Mitsuya's hand, eating the apple yummly. He doesn't notice Mitsuya's hand freezing in mid-air. Mitsuya had cut a small, easy-to-eat piece, and just moments ago, Takemichi's lips briefly brushed against his fingers. The sensation felt like a tiny spark at the tip of Mitsuya's finger, making his eyes flicker for a second. He momentarily spaces out, gently rubbing his fingers before continuing to peel more apples. He hides his emotions, appearing a bit flustered, but soon finds himself glancing up at Takemichi again. When Takemichi notices, he smiles at him as usual before turning to play with Luna and Mana.

After finishing peeling the apple and placing the slices on a plate for Takemichi, Mitsuya props his head up with his hand, watching him eat.

Takemichi feels like Mitsuya's gaze might pierce right through him, so he pulls Hakkai into a conversation. But even Hakkai is unusually gentle with him today. Does being sick really get him this much special treatment?
