Dahkook: Boy Next Door
(ship requested by RutendoMutandiro & shilarubii)
(Concept: Dahyun and Jungkook live in the same area and run into each other often. They don't interact much, until Dahyun finds out she has a secret admirer)
(Dahyun POV)
After a long day of work, I started for home. I was just going to go home after I got off the bus, but my stomach growled, reminding me that I needed to eat something.
I remembered I didn't have much to eat at home. I needed to buy groceries soon. So instead of going home, I stopped at a diner. It was already late, but the diner was open twenty-four hours.
I asked for a table and they sat me down. There were only a few other people in the diner, eating alone like I was.
I ordered my food and waited. I was so tired. This week had been going by so slow.
"Here's your chocolate milkshake." The waitress sets the drink down on my table.
"Oh, I didn't order this." I say.
She leans closer to tell me, "The young man over there ordered it for you."
She walks away as my eyes look for the guy she was talking about.
He was looking right at me.
I feel like I've seen him around before. We must live near each other. Maybe we're neighbors or something.
He stands up from his table and walks towards me.
"Hi." He says.
"Hi, um...thanks for the milkshake."
"You're welcome." He nods, "Can I sit here?"
He told me his name was Jungkook. He said he recognized me too. It turns out, he lives in the sane apartment complex as me.
"Do you come home from work late too? I ask him.
He nods, "My shift ends around nine. It takes me a while to get home on public transport too."
I almost forgot to ask him about the milkshake.
"How'd you know I love chocolate?"
He shrugs, smiling, "Lucky guess."
I asked him why he ordered it for me.
"It gave me an excuse to talk to you." He says, "I see you so often, but I never knew your name until now."
We started talking about how we ended up in this neighborhood and our jobs and stuff like that. He ordered his own milkshake and we kept talking while I ate my food.
He was so nice and respectful. I felt comfortable around him, even though I just learned his name today. I thought he was a lot older than me since he seemed so mature, but he's only a year older.
Eventually, we left as it was getting even later and I needed to get home and catch some sleep. We walked to our complex together.
"I usually don't like walking by myself this late at night." I told him as we were walking.
"You don't usually get home this late, though, do you?" He asks.
"Not usually, but sometimes. It's kind of scary since there's not a lot of lights on this street." I explain.
He pulls his phone out of his pocket and turns on the flashlight, "Does this help?"
Why didn't I think of that?
We got home and went our separate ways. I lived on the third floor while he lived on the first. I felt like I had a new friend.
We kept running into each other at the same places, except I only realized it was him now. It didn't occur to me back then. I saw him at the bus stop in the morning and in the laundry room on the weekend. Then I would see him when I got off the bus from work and we would walk home together. It was our thing.
One day, he invited me to hang out with him outside of our usual spots. He offered to have dinner at his place. He insisted that he would cook for the both of us, but I came over sooner than he asked so I could help him.
He surprised me with his cooking skills. I didn't underestimate him, he was just really good. I prepared the ingredients, but he did all the cooking.
"You have a nice setup. Your place is really cozy." I say as we're eating.
"Thank you." He smiles, "I know these apartments aren't huge, but I like the cozy feeling."
We were almost finished eating when I noticed his expression had changed. He looked either scared or confused about something.
"Jungkook-ssi, are you alright?" I ask him.
He gets a bit startled, "O-oh yeah, I'm okay. Sorry, just spaced out a bit."
He keeps his head down as he finishes his food. Once we both finished, he took my plate and started washing the dishes. I helped him get the rest of the kitchen cleaned up.
"Dahyun-ah, if I'm being honest with you..." He starts as he shuts of the water.
I look over to him, but he was facing away from me at the sink.
"I like you." He says, "I really like you."
I walk over to him so I could see his face. He wouldn't look me in the eye.
"If I'm being honest," I say, "I think you're wonderful, Jungkook."
He looks at me with his innocent eyes, "Then...will you go out with me? On a date?"
"Sure," I say, "But was this not a date already?"
"Oh..." He chuckles, "I mean, I guess you could call this a date, but that's not what I called it when I invited you over..." He trails off, "So you'll go on another date with me?"
"I'd love to."
It was convenient that we lived so close to each other. We were both pretty busy with work, but we always saw each other at the beginning of the day and right at the end.
I was lucky to be close with someone like Jungkook. We had each other's backs. I think I slowly started to fall for him, but we never changed the things we did when we first became friends.
Maybe I was already falling for him back then and I just didn't realize it.
