Hey! How are you?
"Shut up." I nudged Masons side with my elbow. He caved to the other side, grabbing his waist.
"Ouch!" He whispered, dropping my pen.
"Thank you." I picked it up, giving him a smug look. He grabbed at my arm, trying to get my pen back. We giggled as I threw a fry at him.
Mason and I had been working, a little too hard. We decided to stop to get some food, as we needed a break and got hungry. Woods was one of my close friends. Not nearly as close as Mason, or even Adler. But still one of my best buds. Here Mason and I sat, at this table, coming up with ideas of what to wear at Woods' upcoming wedding. He had finally done it. After years of moping and complaining, he found someone. Good for him, as he'll finally have someone else to bother as much as he bothers us daily. But, we do love him dearly.
"Okay, okay.. So I'm thinking for you.. Like.. (F/C) and maybe some black heels?" He questioned, writing it down on a piece of paper and roughly drawing out horribly what he had in mind.
"Okay, not bad." I tapped my pen on the table. He took a bite from his burger as I looked at my blank paper in thought.
"How about.." I mumbled, sketching out a nice black suit with a tie.
"This?" I picked up the paper, showing it to him.
He smiled, nodding his head slowly.
"I like it, good taste, (Y/N)." I smiled back, biting on the end of my pen.
"Can you believe it? He's actually found someone. Someone who loves him and can deal with him." We both burst out laughing at Masons comment.
"No, but really, I am happy for him." Mason continued, wiping the tears from the good laugh we had from his eyes.
"Me too." I smiled "I can't believe it. It's like he's growing up so fast." I continued.
"Now we just need to find you a man, (Y/N). How about Adler?" He blew me a fake kiss.
"Gahh! No! Mason! He's like a brother to me. He's attractive but he doesn't like me that way." I slapped my pen to the table.
"But you guys kissed!" He whined in retaliation. I tried to keep my cool, holding in my sigh.
"Yes, Mason, but we went over this. Adler and I spoke about it and have decided to stay friends. I would prefer not to ruin the friendship I have with Adler. We've known each other for years." I stopped myself from continuing by taking a sip of my drink. Looking out the window, I sighed lowly. Mason didn't seem to notice as he shrugged and apologized for bringing it up. I love Mason, so of course I'll forgive him for whatever reason I may be mad at him.
"Okay, let's get back before Adler's beats us up for being late." I giggled.
Mason threw out our trays as I packed up our leftovers in a bag, and put away our papers and pens in my purse. Mason sighed happily, stepping away from the table. "I'm happy for him." He pretended to fake cry.
"Oh, please. You're married too. Did you forget you have a wife and a kid?"
I poked his side.
"I'm just joking around. He felt the same way when I got married. And when we found out about David? Oh, forget it. He was nearly at my feet crying of happiness as if he was the father AND mother of David all at once." He spoke with his hands, looking at me ocassionally.
I laughed, nodding at his statements. I could believe that, that sounds like Woods to me. He opened the car door for me, letting me sit in the passenger seat. "Thank you." I smiled to him.
"No problem." Mason hopped into the drivers side and started up the car. We sat silently as Mason tapped to the beat of Start Me Up by The Rolling Stones.
We slowly turned to each other, acknowledging the song.
If you start me up
If you start me up, I'll never stop
If you start me up
If you start me up, I'll never stop
I giggled under my breath, knowing what was coming.
I've been running hot
You got me wrecking gonna blow my top
If you start me up
If you start me up, I'll never stop
Never stop, never stop, never stop
Mason began to drive with one hand, using the other one to get into my face and make funny hand movements while driving. He would look at me ocassionally and look back at the road. I covered my mouth, trying not to laugh.
You make a grown man cry
You make a grown man cry
You make a grown man cry
He groaned with the words off key, finally singing. I burst out laughing. Mason laughed between words, singing and laughing at the words.
Spread out the oil, the gasoline
I walk smooth, ride in a mean, mean machine
Start it up
His voice was coarse as he sang along to the song. My laugh continued as I joined him in jamming out to the song.
If you start me up
Kick on the starter give it all you got, you got, you got
I can't compete
With the riders in the other heats
Mason and I moved our hands as we were stopped at a red light. Our windows were down, as it was a hot day and the air conditioning in the car was broken.
If you rough it up
If you like it you can slide it up
Slide it up, slide it up, slide it up
These lyrics made his eyebrows move up and down with every slide it up. I laughed at him as he looked at me, pretending to be seductive behind the meaning of the lyrics.
Don't make a grown man cry
Don't make a grown man cry
Don't make a grown man cry
The verse became louder as I joined in with him, not caring who heard. The light turned green after, letting some of the instruments play their part.
My eyes dilate, my lips won't wait
My hands are greasy, she's a mean, mean machine
Start it up
People looked at us from the street, side walks, in their cars, on their bicycles, and motorbikes. We looked at each other in sync, looking back to the road as we almost reached our destination.
Start me up
Give it all you got
You got to never, never, never stop
Slide it up, whoo
Oh baby, just slide it up
Slide it up, slide it up, never, never, never
"Hey! Nice singing!" A random man from his car shouted out from next to us. He threw us a thumbs up and we laughed, thanking him.
You make a grown man cry
You make a grown man cry
You make a grown man cry
We continued to sing, getting into the song and dancing with each other side by side in our car seats.
Ride like the wind at double speed
I'll take you places that you've never, never seen
Mason started the verse, letting me finish as we pointed at each other, just jamming and grooving to the song. We needed this, as we had been working hard for our team lately.
Start it up
Let me tell you we will never stop, never stop
Never, never, never stop
Start me up
Never stop, never stop
"You ready?!" I yelled over the loud music.
"Of course!" Mason replied loudly.
You, you, you make a grown man cry
You, you make a dead man come
You, you make a dead man come
We laughed together at the end of the song as Mason turned the car off. I wiped tears from my eyes, and my stomach hurt from laughing and singing so much. Adler stared at us through the glass of the windshield with a confused look. We looked at each other, giggling, then to Adler, and back at each other. Our laughs started up again as we stumbled out of our seats in the car. I composed myself enough to close my door, running to Adler to give him a hug.
"We're back. Sorry it took so long." Mason stood next to me. I gave Adler a hug, nearly knocking the cigarette from between his fingers. He wrapped his arm around my back, furrowing his face into my hair. His nose touched the top of my head as I let out a sad, muffled sigh into Adler's chest. We had a past, of course. I was still in love with him, but him and I just can't be together because of our jobs. And we don't want to lose our jobs either. So as long as we get to see each other daily until we can get over each other and just be friends, we figured our career paths were more important. I knew he was in love with me too, and yet we still couldn't push ourselves to destroy our jobs that we worked so hard for our whole lives, and side by side at that.
Mason pat Adler's shoulder, excusing himself as he knew the situation and understood it all. As soon as the door closed, I hugged Adler tighter. A tear fell from my eye, occupying his shirt instead of me. "I love you." I whispered into his chest. "I love you too." He whispered back, planting a kiss on the top of my head.
He lifted my head with his fingers, wiping my tears. "I know." He cupped my cheek with one hand, rubbing under my eye with his thumb. "It's hard. We will always be friends after we get over each other together. I promise." He said lowly, pulling me closer.
I nodded, slowly leaning in, pushing myself up to level with his lips from my shorter height. I cried, wrapping my hand around his neck. Within seconds, we were both stood outside in a tight hug. Our lips tenderly moved with one another, dancing together in sync. "God, I'm gonna miss this." He sighed pulling his lips away from mine.
"Me too." I said before quickly pulling him into a kiss once more.
He kissed back for a moment, before we both pulled away. His forehead rested on mine as he continued to wipe my tears. Adler backed away, pulling himself out of the hug. My arms went limp as his body left his position against mine. He got down on one knee, as if to propose. "Be my date to Woods' wedding?" His hands displayed a pretty bracelet in a box.
I smiled weakly at him, hugging him from on the ground. "Of course."
Adler stood up, bringing me with him. We hugged for a moment before parting again. He slipped the bracelet on my hand. I looked at it, as it shined in the sunlight. The bracelet was a beautiful silver, the chain made of little stars and a small metal heart plate in the middle. We gave each other one last peck before he wiped my tears once more. He grabbed my hand, squeezing it. I took a deep breath as we walked inside, hand in hand. Mason walked towards us to make sure we were okay. Adler and Mason spoke for a while, as I sat on a chair staring at my bracelet. I sighed. I couldn't tell if the sigh was happy or just, a sigh. From behind, I felt a hand snake onto my shoulder.
"Are you okay (Y/N)?" A familiar voice asked concerningly.
"What? Oh, yes. Of course." I replied, turning around to see Woods.
"Good." He smiled.
I stood, giving him a big hug.
"I'm so happy for you, Frank." My hands wrapped around his neck, my face on his shoulder.
"Thank you." His grin widened.
"I'm very happy too, I can't wait to marry her.." He continued, trailing off.
"I know, she's amazing. We love her." I smiled, a warm smile.
We parted, smiling at each other.
"I'm glad. I couldn't marry her if you guys didn't like her. I wouldn't be able to." He chuckled.
"Oh, shut up. You love her and you know it." I playfully punched his arm, giggling.
We turned back to Mason and Adler. Woods and I walked to them, joining in on their conversation. Mason and Woods stood side by side as Adler let me hold his hand.
This wasn't ideal, and I'm not exactly happy, but at least my friends are.
I sighed happily under my breath as they continued to speak.
