Somehow I woke up before Levi, my back aching from the hard ground.

The forest had returned to normal, aside from the early morning fog that seemed to cling from the ground.

I sat up, debating whether or not to wake up sleeping beauty when a loud purring noise startled me out of my thoughts.

"Who are you?" I cooed, crouching to get a better look at the small black cat that was approaching the two of us, it meowed loudly in response.

"Shh-" I put a finger to my lips, "don't wake up the beast- he might eat you."

"Who the fuck are you talking to?" The cat startled a bit at the sound of Levi's voice, hovering just out of reach.

"Don't worry- I'll protect you," I glared back at a barely conscious Levi, "come here kitty."

"You do horrible things in my body," Levi grumbled, sitting up.

"I'm just being nice, sue me for being out of character," I continued to beckon for the cat, which began to slowly move forward. "It's adorable."

"It has a collar," Levi pointed out, gesturing to the bright red ribbon on its neck.

"We're awfully deep in the woods for a housecat to have wandered in," I muttered, the cat finally getting close enough for me to pet it.

"Exactly," Levi nodded. "There must be something nearby."

"What's your name?" I muttered, reaching for the tag on the collar, "Mr. Squid?"

"That is a dumb ass name."

"There isn't even a place to get squid anywhere near here," I chuckled, "you must have an eccentric owner." The cat ignored the two of us, choosing to nuzzle into my side instead.

"Do you think his owner is-" Levi trailed off watching as Mr. Squid abandoned his place at my side and began walking over to him.

"Wow- that traitorous little devil."

who in their right mind would pick levi over ME

"Face it Y/N, I'm better than you."

"Watch it- you're in my body."

"You're just jealous."

"The minute we're back in our bodies we're figuring out who he likes more," I shook my head at Mr. Squid who was comfortably sitting in Levi's lap.

"Speaking of our bodies," Levi began stroking Mr. Squid, who purred loudly in response. "There's only one person who would have a cat this deep in the woods."

Suddenly Mr. Squid sat up, as if remembering something important and started meowing loudly.

The two of us watched as he walked a few paces, before turning to stare back at us.

"Is he asking us to follow him?"

"Are we going to follow the fucking cat?"

"Do you have any better ideas?"

"No."

"Let's go then," I began to pack up our small camp. "Hurry- we don't want to lose him."

"He's waiting for us," Levi glanced over at Mr. Squid, before beginning to help me pack.

"Alright, lead the way Mr. Squid," I stood up, glancing back at Levi who was busy fussing with his pack, "you ready?"

"Ready."

"I'm never going to be able to explain this to anyone," I grinned, excitedly hurrying after the small cat. "This is amazing."

"This is the least interesting thing that has happened to us," Levi shrugged.

"You're lying-" Mr. Squid and I stopped in our tracks to stare at him incredulously.

at least the cat gets me

"The beetle was way more interesting, this is just a cat," he muttered.

"You're so lame," I turned back towards Mr. Squid who was busy grooming his coat, "I'm sorry you had to hear that Mr. Squid."

levi is insensitive and cruel

"It doesn't care," Levi rolled his eyes, his teasing smile a clear sign that he was just trying to egg me on.

"Why are you so horrible?" I shook my head at him dismissively, "I know you like him- he's adorable and a mystery."

"Are we going to follow the cat or not?"

"He has a name."

"I'm not saying it."

"Lame," I began walking again, keeping my eyes on the black cat. "Mr. Squid and I are going to leave you behind."

that's a promise

"No you won't."

"No I won't," I glanced back over my shoulder, waiting for Levi to catch up, "but he might."

"I wouldn't put it past him."

"In his defense you've been bullying him."

The cat in question meowed loudly at the both of us in what I could only describe as exasperation.

"Even cats can't stand you."

"It is truly a grim world we live in if the only person who can stand my presence is Levi Ackerman," I muttered dramatically, "luckily we don't live in that world and I am loved deeply <3"

"Or so you think."

"Shut up."

The two of us continued on, following Mr. Squid until suddenly the cat broke out in a run, disappearing into the long grasses of a sudden clearing.

"He got tired of us," I sighed, looking over at Levi, "I blame you."

"As if."

"If I was a cat I would also run away from you."

"But you aren't a cat."

"Explode."

"You wish," Levi nudged me toward the clearing, "are you going to move or what?"

"I'm going-" I shook my head in indignation, stepping into the clearing. Out of the dense tree cover I expected to catch a glimpse of the sun that had eluded us our entire journey. Instead, looking up I was greeted by the large branches of a tree that stood above all of the others, casting a shadow over the entire clearing.

"I think I know where the cat went," Levi nodded over at the base of the gigantic tree- a staircase spiraled into the canopy.
