Chapter 4
I felt the bed move next to me, making me stir slightly as I rolled over. Dom was putting his clothes back on, clearly trying to keep quiet in hopes not to wake me up.
Too late.
Me being me, I waited till Dom left the room before I actually sat up, stretching as I too slipped my clothes back on. I had just finished clipping Dom's cross necklace that he gave me on when I heard yelling.
Dom.
As I moved closer to the door, I better understood the words that were leaving his mouth. "Mia was on that train Vince, Em was on that train and your guys threatened to put a bullet to her head when they caught her!"
Vincent's voice was now heard, his voice scared and angry all at once, "I didn't know Dom. I swear, if they threatened your girl like that and I knew about it I'd warn them the other way."
"You set up the deal!" Dom yelled, causing me to open the door, seeing Dom pinning Vince to the same pillar Mia and I had hide behind before. "I thought the job was for the cars. I didn't know. All they want is the chip."
I leaned in the room doorway, crossing my arms as I watch with curiosity and confusion.
Dom punched the pillar, just by Vincent's face as he shouted, "Damn it." This caused both Vincent and I to jump slightly. "You should've come clean!"
Mia and Brain made their way out of one of the rooms, Mia immediately asking "What's going on out here?" I slowly walked over, joining the crowd as Dom pushed himself off of Vincent roughly.
"Nothing," Dom said, his eyes glancing at me as if they were asking me "How long have you been there?" Which my eyes answered "Long enough."
Vincent broke Dom and I's look with his words, begging him to give the chip back to him. "Please, Dom, just let me have the chip. I can take this to them. They'll give it to Reyes and set things right."
"Get out," Dom said, causing Vincent to give him an angry confused look. He took a step towards Dom who was now facing the ground, "What?" Dom wasted no time raising his voice, "Get out!"
Vincent starred at Dom, anger in his eyes as he looked at the rest of us, as if asking if anyone was going to say anything. No one did. Mia and Brian didn't hear everything like I did, so they just agreed with Dom, but I knew everything that was said.
"You never listen to me. Not when I told you he was a cop, and not now," Vincent said, gesturing to Brian. Dom looked at me, keeping his eyes on me as Vincent talked. I had seen that look before, but only now did I actually know what it meant.
If his eyes pulled away from mine for even a second, he's rain hell on Vincent. So he starred at me, my eyes the only thing keeping him under control.
"You never trust me and look where it's gotten us. Look at our family now. I can't go home! Your sister is stuck in this life! And Emily has no family!"
"This is my family," I spoke, my eyes looking to Vincent who looked at me. "But you, you aren't, so do yourself a favor and leave before you can't," I said through clenched teeth.
Vincent said nothing, he just looked back at Dom who was still watching me before stomping his way out, slamming the door shut behind him.
Silence filled the room for a minute, no one wanted to talk about what just happened but everyone was upset about it. Dom finally broke the silence, holding out a small chip to Brian, "Find out what's on here."
Brian took the chip, taking a seat at the small table, and plugging it into the untraceable computer. Mia followed him while Dom walked over to me, rubbing his hand up and down my arms softly, "You okay?"
I nodded, giving him a reassuring smile before we walked over to Brain and Mia. "Anything good?" I asked, looking over Brian's shoulder.
"Well, it's definitely a custom chip. Look at all these side menus here for data entry. Let's check this one," Brian said, clicking on one of the files. He smiled, "Look at that. Same building, same order every week."
"It's a delivery schedule," Dom said, standing next to me.
I pointed to a list of numbers on the side, "Are these drug orders?"
Brain shook his head, "No, that's a dealer pack. See, most major players, they weigh their money so they don't have to constantly count it. Right there, that's 49 kilos. 49 kilos is a million in twenties."
"You're saying each one of these shipments is worth 10 million dollars?" Mia asked, eyes wide. Brian nodded, "Yeah, that's about a 100-million plus in cash houses."
Dom spoke up, standing up straight and taking a step back to look at everyone. "That's how he keeps it off the grid."
"I think it's safe to say that Reyes is smart to want this back. It's his whole network right there, just laid out on a chip, and we have it right in our hands," I said.
The sound of something metal falling right outside grabbed all of our attentions. All of our friends knew not to just show up, some didn't even know where we were. So that only left foe.
"Mia, Brian, get out here, Emily go with them," Dom said, taking a couple of steps away from us, looking at the door.
"Like hell I am," I said, grabbing the crowbar and standing next to him while Brian and Mia grabbed the chip and jumped out the window. The second Brian slipped through the window, the doors busted open, revealing at least five guys with guns.
Dom grabbed one of the guys with one arm before using his other arm to grab the gun. He cause the guy to shoot at one of the other guys before throwing him into one of the pillars.
I hid behind the other pillar, watching as one guy crept up behind Dom with a knife, ready to strike. I swung the crowbar at the guy, hitting his head as hard as I could, causing the man to fall to his knees, holding his bleeding head.
"Em, window!" Dom yelled, already running to one of the windows. He held his arms up, breaking the window which poured in the outside light. I ran behind him, jumping out the window as well.
Another rooftop was what saved our landing, but that didn't stop the bullets from flying around us. "Go low," Dom yelled, gesturing with his hand for me to jump low.
I jumped off one of the roofs, climbing down a latter and running between houses. I hopped the men would follow me instead of Dom, but when I noticed agents creeping up on us, there was no use for hope.
We were screwed.
My breathing was heavy as I continue to run, jumping and dodging bullets like my life depended on it. Which it did at the moment. I continued to run, until a girl with blonde hair tied up into a pony-tale jumped in front of me, pointing a gun at me.
She grabbed her walky, opening her mouth to talk but before she could, I grabbed her wrist that was holding the gun and elbowed her in the face.
The girl staggered back slightly as I slammed my hand onto her wrist, causing her to drop the gun. I pushed her back, causing us both to go behind a wall as the bullets bounce doff of the other side.
I grabbed the gun, pointing it at her as she glared at me. "You won't get away with this you know? Everyone is looking for you."
"I didn't do a damn thing," I yelled to her, causing her to shut her mouth. "My mom's an alcoholic liar that will say anything to get sympathy from someone. Ask Paris, she'll tell you who I really am."
The girl looked at me confused, "You don't know? Your sisters are dead," She said, causing my mouth to part slightly as I lowered the gun. "And your mom, they died in a freak fire at your house."
My eyes looked at the ground in disbelief, my head began to get foggy while my body began to shake. But I stopped it, snapping my mind back into realty and forcing my body to find its strength. I lifted the gun, pointing it back up at the girl and shooting her right arm, just grazing it.
When she staggered back, I threw the gun to the side and began to run again. Somehow, I managed to slip past everyone, finding my way into a pipe that carried water to a small dried up lake.
Dom, Mia and Brian soon came after, unharmed and relieved to find me there as well.
The agent's words quickly grew in my head, reminding me of what she said. But as quickly as the memory grew, it shrunk again, leaving me to only think of one thing. Safety.
"They're going to be looking for the four of us together now. We need to split up. You and Mia head south, Emily and I will lead them away," Dom said, already walking away.
I started to walk with him, preparing to split up again. As much as I wanted to stick together, the last thing I wanted was for Mia to get hurt and the only way she wouldn't was if Brian was there.
That left Dom and I.
"What, no," Mia said, stopping Dom and I to look back at her and Brian.
Brian looked at Mia, agreeing with Dom, "Dom is right. Look how lucky we just got. What happens next time? We have no choice but to split up."
Mia looked at each of us, heartbroken written on her face. The next two words that left her mouth through all of us off guard, leaving us speechless, "I'm pregnant."
Clearly by the look Brian gave her, he hadn't even known about this. "I already lost my family once. I'm not going through that again, not now, not ever."
Brian, after composing what Mia had just said, smiled and kissed her, hugging her. "I'm not going anywhere. Okay, I swear," He said, thrilled to death about all of this. As he pulled away, Mia looked at Dom and me, "Promise me we stick together."
Dom stood there, still in shock for a moment before smiling. His ear to ear smile gave Mia the answer she wanted, but just to make sure, Dom said, "I promise," and hugged her.
"Well, if Dom's staying then it looks like you're stuck with me," I said, walking over to the group and giving Mia a hug. Dom wrapped his arms around Mia and I, also pulling in Brian, "Our family just got bigger."
"A whole lot bigger," Mia said, looking at Dom and I with a giant smile.
Brian looked at Dom and I as well, reading Mia's mind as he asked, "Wait? Are you two together?"
I lightly hit Brian's arm, "Oh come on O'Conner, we all knew that this would happen someday." Brian's answer made Dom and I both laugh right out loud, "Well, it's about damn time."
After another group hug we started our walk towards a house we could hold up in until we figured everything out. Mia was inside, already covered up with a blanket and sleeping in a chair.
I sat in a chair outside, watching as lights started to go out, cuing that night had overtaken Rio, sending everyone to bed.
My mind started to wake up though, growing the memory of my family once again. They were gone, dead. As much as I hated Britney and my mother, I never wanted to hear that they were dead, not by fire.
Paris, she was the one I missed the most. She was taken with the rest of the family, though like me she was nothing like them.
It's not fair.
I hadn't even realized that my eyes were watering until a single tear slipped out and rolled down my cheek. Quickly I whipped it away, only to look over to see Dom had stepped out with two drinks in his hand, looking at me worriedly.
"Hey, are you okay?"
A small laugh left my lips as I took the Corona bottle from him, "No." Dom pulled up the seat that was by me, moving to in front of me as he sat down his drink, watching me worriedly.
I hugged my legs to my chest, taking a sip of the Corona before I started to talk. "So, when we were running, I ran into this cop. She was a blond, clearly had no idea who I fully was, because she let her guard down. I had her gun pointed at her and she told me something that made me give up the gun and run."
Dom looked at me even more confused, so I continued, looking at him as I spoke. "She told me that my mom, and Britney, and Paris died in a house fire. At first I thought it was some cruel way to get me to lower the gun, but when she didn't make another move, I knew she wasn't lying."
"You can't believe everything cops say Em," Dom said, reaching over and giving my boot a small squeeze.
"But if you would have seen the look in her eyes. She was telling the truth, and she felt sorry for me. I mean, I know that they weren't the best and that they maybe deserved it, but Paris, she was incent in this. She didn't deserve to die, especially not with them. I promised her I'd take care of her and I left her with a rube band of money and three words. "Don't look back" Now I wish she had."
Dom watched me with sadness as I held back the tears that threatened to escape. "Its months since I've seen them, but everything that they've done feels like it was only yesterday. I want to forgive them, forgive all of them, but I can't. Even if they are my family."
I took another swig of Corona before whipping my eyes. Dom gestured for me to come over to him, making me lowered my legs and sit on his lap. He held me close to him, making me look into his eyes.
"Your family is right here. You shouldn't have to forgive them, not after everything. I'm so sorry about Paris, and when this is all over we'll honor her right. I promise."
Hearing Dom's words made me want to cry all over again but I stopped them, leaning over to give him a kiss.
Brian walked out soon after, smiling a little when he noticed me sitting on Dom's lap, playing with his cross necklace that sat around my neck. Brian sat on the porch railing, looking out at the town before asking, "Hey Em, you never did tell me about your father."
I shrugged, taking one last swig of my drink before answering, "Not much to tell. He was an alcoholic, cheated on my mom, and left with everything we had when I was ten. After that mom stopped caring about her kids and wanted everyone else's attention."
"Is he alive?"
I shrugged, looking at my almost empty bottle, "Not sure. I tried looking him up a while ago but gave up after I found nothing."
Brian nodded, looking over to Dom now, "Hey, Dom, what do you remember about your father?"
"My father?" Dom asked, looking off for a minuet as he thought for a bit. "He used to have a barbecue every Sunday after church. For anybody in the neighborhood. If you didn't go to church, you didn't get any barbecue. He even snuck Em into church a couple of times, told her mom he was teaching her what work was. Every single day he was in the shop, and every single night, he was at the kitchen table with Mia, helping her with her homework. Even after she went to sleep, he'd stay up for a few more hours so he could learn the next chapter and help her the next day. I remember everything about my father, everything."
Brian smiled, but it soon left as he started to think, "That's just it. I don't remember shit about my dad. I don't remember him yelling, I don't remember him smiling. To be honest with you, I don't even remember what the hell he looked like. He was just, never there."
"Lucky, I wish I could forget my dad," I said, scuffing a little at hearing my own words.
Dom spoke up, clearly seeing as the subject of my dad was more open now than it ever was before. He never liked to push the subject of my dad, knowing how much I hated it. But he never met him so I didn't mind that he asked questions. "What's last thing you remember?"
I thought for a second, actually trying to figure out what the last thing was.
"It was the night before he left. Mom was doing laundry, while I was sitting on the couch trying to help her fold. He walked in, stumbling over his own shoes. Immediately my mom told me to go to my room, but I stayed. He walked in, screaming and swearing at everything like he didn't know what was real and what was in his mind. Words were exchanged and the next thing I know, ten year old me is trying to stop them. Stupid mistake, because I got backhanded by my dad."
Dom and Brian both looked at me with sad eyes as I talked, looking off as I recalled everything.
"All my mom did was gasp and then continue to yell at him. The next day she found him sleeping with another women. She ran out of the house, but by the time she got back with Britney, everything she owned was gone. The only thing that was left was me."
I shook my head, dissolving the memory, "But I learned that dads do that, and that I was better off without him. And I guess if it wasn't for him walking out and leaving us with nothing, I never would have taken up street racing."
"Which means you never would have met Dom," Brian said, smiling.
My head looked at Dom, seeing him smile while his eyes still showed some sadness in them. When I spoke though, he couldn't help but drop his sadden eyes, "Yup. And I think he's a keeper."
I looked back at Brian, "But you Brain, you're not going to be like that."
Brian nodded, looking down at his shoes as I stood up. I went inside, grabbing another bottle before coming back out to Dom and Brian talking.
"We got to get out now," Brian said as Dom watched me closely. He nodded, his eyes looking down at the ground as his hand reached into his back pocket, "You're right. Here's how we're going to do it."
Dom pulled out the small chip, looking between Brian and me. "We're going to use this. We're going do one last job. We're going to take all of Reyes' money, every dime of it, and disappear. Forever."
Brian smiled somewhat while I smirked in excitement. "New passports, new lives with no more looking over our shoulder. And we're just going to buy our freedom."
Dom nodded, "That's right."
"I'm all for up for this but you do realize we're talking about going up against the most powerful guy in all of Rio? Right?" I asked, walking over so I was standing aside of Brian and Dom.
With a nod, Brian smirked, "Then we're going to need a team."
A smile crept onto my face as I sat my hands on my hips, my mind and body already getting excited. "Looks like we're getting the gang back together."
I'm so excited to start writing some fight scenes. Just giving everyone a heads up, that I will be changing some characters/story-lines around in this book and future books.
One of my favorite scenes in this chapter was when Dom is talking to Emily about honor Paris. What's your favorite scene so far in this book?
Comment and let me know!
