Chapter 4
My eyes scanned over the bullet that only an hour or so ago I had pulled out of Dom's shoulder. My body sat on the same table that Dom had sat on while I took out the bullet but Dom was watching from a far, giving me the space I needed but keeping a worried eye on me.
Brian walked over, clearly not respecting the time of thought I badly needed in this quiet secret hideout.
"What you're looking at is a 5.45 by 18 FMJ spitzer bullet," he said, answering any question I had as he talked. "It's specific to one handgun, the PSM. Given that handguns are illegal in the United Kingdom, there's very few people that have access to that firearm. So if somebody wanted to, say, track down where it came from, it wouldn't be too hard."
He outstretched a sheet of people, making me look at the paper, Brian, then back at the paper as I took it. "I was a cop for a lot of years, some habits die hard," Brian said as I looked over the paper.
"A pawn shop," I said, looking up to meet Dom's eyes. "Let's go then," Dom said, still keeping his distance, his voice echoing in the large empty room.
Dom didn't need to say it again or wait for Brian and I. We all piled into a car, Dom driving quickly as he looked for the address of the pawn shop. Sure enough, it was open to the public, a couple of guys sitting inside on a couch looking like they were customers.
The bell above the door rang, signaling somebody walking in. I made my way to the front desk where a glass kept the man and I separated. A wide hole in the glass where things would be exchanged sat open, waiting for something to go through it.
"All right, what do you want?" The desk guy asked, barley giving me a glance. "They say if someone's looking for a Russian gun, you're the man to see," I said, making his eyes finally look up at me. His eyes then fell to Dom and Brian before looking back at me, "Oh, they do, do they?"
The two guys on the couch quickly got up, ready to fight but failing as Dom grabbed the one guy, hitting his head with the man's before watching him fall to the ground unconsciously. Brian punches the other guy a few times before knocking him to the ground, causing him to quickly hold is nose.
The desk man reached for a gun, but before he could even come inches to it, my hands reached through the hole in the glass, grabbing onto his shirt and banging him to the glass, pushing his face up to it.
A bell going off behind me told me someone was walking it, but before they even got passed the door, Brian held a gun up to the guy, "That might be a bad idea."
I quickly got to work with the desk guy, Dom behind me, keeping his eye on the desk guy while I took charge for once. "I'm looking for the owner of this bullet," I said, nodding to the bullet in Dom's hand.
Trying to shake his head, the desk guy quickly said, "I don't know." I push the guy away from the glass, only to slam him back into it, causing a groan to leave his lips. "Try taking a closer look."
"Okay, okay, about a week ago, a girl came in, bought guns, ammo, everything I had," The desk guy rambled.
"A girl?" Dom asked, expecting it to have been Shaw but instead it was a women leaving it only to be Paris. To make sure, I asked, "What did she look like?"
"Tough chick, light hair. Looked like a younger version of you actually. New-be. Trying to get into street racing," The desk guy said, trying to look at me but failing with his face to the glass.
"Where can we find her?" Brian asked, still staying by the door in case someone else tried to come in.
The desk guy shrugged, "How do I know? Do I look like a racer?" Once again, I pushed the desk guy away from the glass only to pull him harder into it, knocking him out. "No, you don't," I mumbled as I let his body fall behind his desk.
Brian, Dom, and I left the pawn shop, switching the open sign to close as we left.
When we arrive back to the secret hide out, Tej and Hobbs had beautiful, new cars all set up and ready to be driven for us. My eyes sparkled at the sight, quickly jumping in a white one and turning on the engine, it purred making my body purr with it.
"I call this one!" I yelled out the open door, bring a chuckle to Tej and Hobbs lips.
"She's happy," Brian said, standing next to Dom as they both watched me reeve the engine again. Dom smiled wide, showing his teeth, "Yeah, she likes cars."
The door opened, letting Roman, Gisele, Hans, and the DSS agent walk in. At the sight of Gisele's cut up face I turned off the car and raced over to her, "What the hell happened to you guys?" I asked, looking to see that the DSS agent was like Gisele as well.
"I'm fine, you should see the other guy," Gisele said, seeing my worried face. I gave Gisele a stern look before breaking into a smile.
"We met Emily's sister, she's lovely," The DSS agent said sarcastically as she made her way over to Hobbs, "Are you all right?" "Yeah," She nodded to her boss before looking back to us.
Hobbs spoke up to Tej, clearly not wasting anytime, "Tej, what have you got? Footage, CCTV? Talk to me." "I just went through all of it. Believe it or not, everywhere Shaw's team is, the cameras are down."
Hobbs put his hands on his hips, "That's a hell of a coincidence. All right, we're going to pay CCTV a little visit. Let's roll."
Dom spoke up, looking to his team, "So, what happened?" Hans answered his question, sighing, "Shaw's goons showed up and started shooting up the place." "But we got something big," Gisele started, reaching into her pocket and pulling out a small black phone, "Braga, he's working with Shaw."
"Of course he is, it's not like this could go easy or anything," I sighed out, leaning against the front of my new car. Hans nodded to the phone, "It's true. That phone's filled with coded payment transactions that lead straight to Braga's cartel."
Roman put his hands up, "Wow, wow, who the hell is Braga?"
"He ran one of the biggest cartels in Mexico," I said, glancing at Dom who glanced back at me. I had ran into the guy once and in the one meeting, it seemed he knew more about me then I knew about him.
"And my old boss," Gisele said, making Hans glance at her, "We used codes just like that to move money out of the country."
Brian shook his head, "It all makes sense. Braga heard about Paris, found out she was with Shaw, now he's working with Shaw. It would explain how the two of them met."
A small groan left my lips as I threw my head back, "Paris what did you get yourself into?" I mumbled to myself.
"Okay, so you all know all this information about him, where do we find him?" Tej asked, not expecting to get an actual answer but Brian being Brain, knew all the answers. "He's sitting in a prison in Los Angeles."
Tej's eyes went wide, "How do you know that?" He asked in shock.
Brian sighed before looking to Dom who took the message, "Brian put him there."
Tej looked to Brian who looked at the ground in silence. A minute passed before he took a deep breath and looked back at everyone, "All right, so this is the break we were looking for. If the two of them were working together, Braga will know what Shaw's up to. I'm going to pay him a visit."
My eyes went wide at hearing Brian, knowing he was going to do something stupid. Roman spoke up before I could even open my mouth, worried about his best friend, "Are you serious right now? Think about what you're saying. You're wanted, Brian. The moment you step foot off that plane, it's a wrap. You're not coming back.
"Coming back? How are you going to get in the country?" Tej asked, making Brian put up his hand to calm everyone, "Let me worry about that."
"Brian," I said, walking over to him and stepping in front of him so he'd look at me, "You don't have to do that, it's not on you." Brian smiled, "This is on me though. I'm the one that mentioned you to him. He looked up Paris and I served her up on a silver platter. I'm the one that gets to make it right, so let me make it right."
Quickly I side stepped, looking to Dom in hopes of him talking Brian out of this. Dom looked at me, watching my eyes before looking to Brian, "Be careful."
I shook my head and threw my hands up in disbelief before quickly walking away from the group. My foot took a sharp turn, leaning against the wall, out of the group's sight.
Of course, Dom walked over to me, making me close my eyes and sigh.
"Emily he'll be okay," Dom said, making me open my eyes and look at him, shaking my head. My voice rose as I spoke, "And what if he's not Dom? What if he goes there and he gets arrested? Brian won't be able to see Mia again, to watch Jack take his first few steps, to enjoy life. He'll be locked up and it will be on you and me, because you didn't try to stop him and I-" My voice trailed off.
"He's doing this for me," I said, finding a different sentience to pick up. "If Paris was just someone else, he wouldn't. But he knows how much she means to me, and Brian being like my brother, will do anything to make me happy."
Dom just watched me, taking in all the words.
"I can't lose Brian," I said honestly. "I can't lose Mia, or Hans, or Gisele, or Tej, or even Roman," I said, shaking my head. "And if I lost you, I'd go insane," I said, shaking my head. "I can't lose anyone else."
When I didn't continue Dom took this as I was done and spoke softly. "I don't want to lose Brian either, I don't want to lose those people in that room, and I defiantly don't want to lose you. But if I hold onto that fear, then I hold back my family."
A smile slowly crawled its way onto my lips before I nodded, "Okay, your right."
Dom smiled before wrapping his arms around me, "Sometimes I am," He mumbled against my head, making my chest jump up and down with a small chuckle.
Hans appeared behind Dom, "Dom, Em I did some checking, asked around, got the location of a street race tonight," He said, making Dom and I pull away, Dom's arm still around my waste.
"I'm in," I said, pulling away from Dom, but his hand caught mine, "I'm coming with you." My mouth opened to argue, but Dom's words echoed in my head, "But if I hold onto that fear, then I hold back my family." Those words stopped me making me close my mouth, "Okay, just be prepared to lose," I said, smiling at the end.
I quickly changed into some shorts, my black boots, a purple shirt, and my black leather jacket. Dom kept his white tank top on and threw on his black leather jacket.
I finally get to ride my new baby while Dom picket a beautiful black car, similar to mine.
When we arrived at the street race, girls were dancing and walking all around, admiring guys and their cars. Dom led the way, pulling up next to a black car that I only presumed as Paris. I stopped my car, just behind Paris' side window, her attention focused on Dom.
"You've got some serious balls, man," Paris said, shaking her head. Dom smirked, "I've been told."
Paris rolled her eyes, shaking her head in discuss, "You know, you're lucky I didn't kill you." "I don't think you were ever going to," Dom said, making Paris' face fall and her mouth drop slightly.
I took this as my chance to pull up next to Paris, making her look over. She sighed and tipped her head back, "Really? What is it with you? Do you got a death wish or something?" Paris asked, looking over to me.
"If that's what it takes to get you home," I said, keeping my eyes on Paris. "So that's why you're both here?" Paris asked, looking between Dom and I. "To drag me out of this car and bring me back?"
I shrugged, looking towards the road in front of me, "Hey, I just came to race." "Same here, what happens after, that depends on you," Dom said, agreeing with me.
"Fine, your funeral," Paris said, adjusting her hand on her wheel as she looked forward. "Just don't look back," I said, throwing my hands up into a pony-tale. My words make Paris look over at me, sadness in her eyes as she recalled me saying that to her years ago. Her mouth dropped for a minute, looking as if she wanted to say something but stopped when a lady walked stood in front of the cars.
"Listen up!" She yelled with a huge smile, "Out here, we're used to getting what we want. This is London, baby," Everyone cheered and clapped as the words. "But remember, don't bite the bait." She pointed to me, "Ready?" She pointed to Paris, "Steady?" She then pointed to Dom, smiling, "Go!"
My foot steps on the petal, pushing the car forward in a heat of speed. Paris was ahead for about a minute before Dom and I caught up. The streets were full of people and cars, making my mind concentrate on everything but Paris.
During the race, my mind had completely forgotten about what was going on around us. During the race, I had completely forgotten that my sister was choosing Shaw over me. During the race, I forgot everything except the engine of the car.
I quickly cut ahead of Paris as we made a sharp turn, while Dom stayed behind Paris as if watching the two sisters race and forgetting he was part of this too.
The finish line came into sight, making a huge smile cross my face. As I crossed the line, followed by Paris who was close behind, I couldn't help but cheer in the car. Suddenly, Paris' car sped ahead of me, taking the advantage of my slowing down car. Her car disappeared into the darkness of the world, leaving Dom and I in the dust.
My smile left, as I watched with shock as she raced off. Turning the car, I stopped it in the dirt parking lot next to a bridge.
"Shit, I almost had her!" I cursed as I got out, slamming the car door shut as Dom got out of his. I hatted cursing like that but sometimes it was needed. Dom stood by my car, watching as I ripped the hair tie out of my hair. "Relax, she got the message," Dom said, trying to calm me down.
"And how are you so sure about that? What if I just pushed her away even further?" I asked, spinning around to face Dom and throwing my hands out.
Dom and I were quiet as I calmed down, lowering my arms. Dom looks at my car, running his fingers over it as he slowly walked over to me, "Just like old times." A smile crept on my face as I recalled the hundreds of races Dom and I shared. Afterwords, us splitting the money.
"You're still upshifting early," Dom said, glancing up at me with a smile. I nodded, agreeing with him, "Yeah, but I still won." Dom laughs lightly before saying with a white teeth smile, "Show me how you drive, I'll show you who you are."
I nodded, crossing my arms, my smile slowly fading, "I don't think I know who I am anymore."
"I do," Dom said, walking over to me and wrapping his arms around my waste while mine found their way around his neck. "You're someone who could never resist American muscle. You never could keep yourself out of trouble, either. You're someone that would do anything for your family. Both blood and racing families. And you're someone I love very much."
Smiling, my body leaned up and kissed Dom's lips before pulling away, "Listen, I know you want to help. But I really think you're in over your head with my sister. She's smart and clearly isn't afraid to hurt you."
Dom moves his hands away from my waste and lays them on my cheeks, almost laughing at me. "I'm here for you," He whispered before pulling his hands away from my face. "Here," He said, unclipping the cross necklace around his neck and clipping it on my own, "For good luck."
My hands touched the necklace, admiring it for a minute before a car pulling up broke my stare. Dom and I fully turn to look at the car, watching as Shaw climbs out. Dom smiled, as if knowing Shaw would come while my hands clenched into fists.
"There she goes, leaving you again. Bloody fickle, that one," Shaw said to me, his eyes watching where Paris had taken off. "You want bloody'? We could do bloody," I spat at him, making Shaw smile in amusement.
"Two street kids, starts out stealing DVD players in East L.A., ends up heisting $100 million in Rio," Shaw said. "Not bad, huh?" I said, smiling at Shaw's comment. Dom nodded, "It's a good story, isn't it?"
Shaw nodded, "Almost inspiring. See, what I couldn't fathom is why you two aren't relaxing on a beach somewhere, plaining weddings, and having kids. Instead, you're working with a two-bit government hack like Hobbs. See, for Dominic Toretto, everyone knows the great Emily Fuller is his weak spot and vise versa. And Emily here didn't care much about her real family, so why is it that this one is so important? Then it clicked, she wants her to have a better life, a life unlike hers. Which must mean she hates her life, otherwise why wouldn't she want it for her sister?"
I took a step, my finger nails digging into my palms while I said through clenched teeth, "That's not true, I love my life."
Shaw looks to Dom, smiling as he slipped his hands into his pockets before taking a couple of steps towards us. "You know, when I was young, my brother always used to say, "Every man has to have a code." Mine? Precision. A team is nothing but pieces you switch out until you get the job done. It's efficient, it works, but you? You're loyal to a fault. Your code is about family. And that's great in the holidays, but it makes you predictable. And in our line of work, predictable means vulnerable. And that means I can reach out and break you whenever I want."
Dom spoke up, "At least when I go, I'll know what it's for."
Shaw nodded, looking at the ground before looking back at us, mostly Dom, "Well, at least you have a code, most men don't. So, I'm going to give you a chance. Take your crew, your girl, and walk away. That's the only way you're going to keep your family safe."
My eye narrowed at him, my arms crossing over my chest, "Your brother never told you never to threaten a person's family? It's a pretty stupid thing to do. But I'll make it simple for you. I walk away when she walks away, and Dom, he doesn't walk away until I do, he's stubborn like that," I said, mumbling the last part. Dom glanced down to me with an admiring smile.
Shwa sighed, "Well, then, bit appears this inspiring tale has come to an end." His eyes looked to my chest, making Dom and I look down as well, a small green light was aimed at it meaning a gun was pointed at me.
Just as plained.
"If that's the way it has to go," Dom said, making me look at Shaw's chest, seeing the same small green light on his chest. Shaw looks down, smiling before laughing, "Let me guess... Hobbs."
I smiled, "The "two-bit government hack.""
Shaw laughs again before turning and walking back to his car, "See you around, Toretto. Fuller," he said, before climbing in his car and racing off. "You can bet on it," I said with venom in my voice.
When I looked back down I noticed the green light had gone, meaning I was no longer being aimed at with a gun. Hobbs walked over, a gun in his hand as he said, "You know what would have happened if I didn't put that tracker in your car?"
Dom reached into his back pocket, pulling out the tracker and showing it to Hobbs, "This one?" Hobbs, Dom, and I broke into a small laugh before Hobbs looked to me, looking serious again, "You know, this just got me one step closer to Shaw. For what it's worth, Fuller, I hope it gets you closer to what you want, too."
I nodded, agreeing with him, "Me too."
Hope you enjoyed the chapter! Please comment so I know you still like the book!
