61. Broken Bonds

"ANDER!! NOOO!!" Rich screamed but the dagger in Ander's hand had plunged deep into Claire's chest.

Blood spilled out and around the blade, soaking Claire's tee. Her eyes were open wide - horrified. Ander's own heart skipped a beat. What if he was wrong? Everything happened so fast and he trusted his instincts.

Instincts...

Aria suggested Ander should trust his instincts. Did she use compulsion on him? He looked up at her, a smug smile on her face. Satisfied.

It was Rick who charged towards Ander, "What have you done?"

Ander eyed Claire, not sure if he should as he might have committed a big mistake. But Claire's lips curled up, the sparkle in her eyes unharmed by the dagger that was deep in her chest.

"Was this supposed to hurt me?" She mocked in her real voice. That was indeed Gabriela. In Claire's body.

Her fingers gripped the handle and she pulled it out with such force no harmed bleeding human could. Ander took few steps back. Rick halted in his place. Gabriela smiled at Ander with pride as if she won something. Her eyes then examined the dagger in her hand, Claire's blood dripping off it.

Her smile vanished. Not only she realized it was a witch dagger, her own soul had been impaired.

"What have you done, Andy? I did this for you!" She screamed as she dropped on the floor.

"You never did anything for anyone, Gab."

"No! That's a lie - ah," she withered in pain. Her eyes found Aria standing near the front door. "Penelope, my dear, help me!"

"I'd pass, mother."

Ander and Rick were confused. Gabriela lay on the floor, gasping for air as more blood spilled out of Claire. Ander had to do something before all hopes are lost for Claire. He sat beside her, grabbed the dagger from Gabriela and plunged into her once again.

She screamed. The silent house was filled with her painful begging. And then she turned silent. Claire's body turned pale, her heart calm as a stone. Ander stared her without reaction.

"Ander!" Rick called him as he rushed towards the amulet and grabbed it. "Her soul is trapped here, right?"

Ander nodded, as Aria shouted, "Do it fast!"

Rick threw the amulet and Ander caught it. Closing his eyes and breathing deeply, Ander heard the light thumping of Claire's heart through their bond. She wasn't dead, yet.

Ander locked the chain around her neck and waited. "The rejuvenation potion," Aria murmured as she came closer to Ander, still maintaining her distance. He took the bottle from her hand and emptied it in Claire's mouth, trusting Aria for once.

Still no movement.

"Can you feel her, Ander?" Rick asked as he took a seat beside them, his tone stressed.

"Feel her?" Aria asked but Ander's eyes were closed, trying to sense her again.

Emptiness.

Void of any contact.

Ander opened his eyes and shook his head, "I can't feel anything!"

The front door slammed open. All three faces turned towards the guest as she entered and examined the site.

"Tell me I'm not late." Dora hurried towards the motionless Claire, her blood pooled around her. "How did-"

"Aria is Gabriela's daughter!" Rick declared.

"But I didn't help her," Aria argued back.

Ander ignored them both, "Her soul was trapped in the amulet, Dora. The only way to bring her back was to stab her body that was owned by Gabriela. That's what I did-"

"Did you use that potion, Rick? The one which brings back Claire to her body?"

"Rejuvenation? Yes! But she's not moving!" Ander shouted.

"Of course she won't! She can't. Not with this wound." Dora ruffled in her bag.

"What do you mean?"

"Ah," Dora sighed happily, "Here it is! Healing potion. The wound is deep so this won't heal it completely but it will work for now."

She poured the potion into the open bleeding wound, while other three pairs of eyes watched hopefully. They couldn't believe what was happening. The wound minimized as if someone played a rewind button, the spilled blood around her body sucked back in.

Claire twitched a little. Purred like a kitten and that melted Ander's heart. He pushed Dora aside and took both of Claire's hands in his. Gently, she opened her eyes, and the first set of eyes she saw were of Ander's.

"Claire! You're... You're alright.." Ander sighed as he helped Claire up. "Thank the gods!"

Claire beamed at him. She had an idea what happened. What dangers she faced unknowingly. But here she was, safe in her body. Ander too seemed unharmed and that was all she prayed for.

What she didn't expect was the sudden touch of Ander's lush lips on hers. He was kissing her! She didn't react at first, but she leaned in, her arms around his neck as she kissed him back.

No words were said but every feeling was conveyed through that kiss. Words would fall short for their love and they knew it. A tear dropped down Claire's eyes onto Ander's hand that caressed her jaws. Ander smiled and pulled back. He was given a chance to be with her, he won't waste a minute.

"Well, that was quite a show!" Rick commented.

Claire's eyes fell on him and then his ankle which was wrapped in cloth coated in blood.

"What happened? Are you alright?" Claire looked at everyone else, glad they were all safe.

"We'll explain everything later," Rick said acting as if his own wounds were nothing.

Claire's eyes were glued to Theodora. Will's great-grandmother. What was she doing here?

"She's my younger sister," Ander answered before she asked.

Dora smiled at her and she smiled back. Everything was fine. Everyone was safe and sound.

Gabriela? Maybe she was gone for good. Her eyes meet Ander's again, devouring his every detail. He was even more handsome in his human body, she thought.

"Everything is over." She looked at him waiting for his confirmation.

When Ander was about to agree, Dora cut in.

"Ander, can you feel her?"

Claire looked between them, confused but Ander understood. He closed his eyes trying to hear her heartbeat. Still nothing. Opening his eyes, Ander placed his hand on Claire's heart. It was beating at a fast pace. Well, it was because Ander's hand was on her chest but it was beating regardless. However, Ander didn't feel it beating through their connection.

Ander looked at Dora, his eyes expressing Dora's fears. "You harmed Claire's body. The bond is broken." She wasn't asking. "That means,"

"It'll be easier to kill Claire." Ander completed for her, his eyes fixed on Claire, her heart beating under his palm.

"It's not over." Dora worried, "Far from it."
