Chapter 13
Chapter 13
Brooklyn
I remember the last time I felt this pain. It was when my brother died. The anger, the pain, it mixed together in my blood like they were part of it. But my body couldn't feel it, no, my body felt numb.
The heat from the large fire in front of us wasn't even felt on my face. I wondered if I touched it if it would even hurt.
My hand reaches down to take Dean's but it's not there. Instead, he has both of his hands shoved in his pockets as he looks at Charlie's body being engulfed in flames in silence.
Sam lets out a shaky breath, next to his brother, before finally breaking the silence. "Charlie. We're gonna miss you. You were the best. And I'm so sorry-"
"Shut up," Dean said, causing his brother to stop. "You got her killed, you don't get to apologize."
"Dean..." I said, my eyes closing, wishing he wouldn't do this. Not now, not like this.
Looking at his big brother, Sam said "We were trying to help you."
"I didn't need help. I told you to leave it alone."
"What was I supposed to do, just watch you die?"
Dean looked at his brother while my eyes stayed on the fire, just listening to their words. "The Mark isn't gonna kill me."
"Maybe not, but when it's done with you, you won't be you anymore and I won't let that happen. So of course, I was gonna fight for you because that's what we do. And listen, I had a shot-"
"Yeah you had a shot. Charlie's dead. Nice shot."
"Enough!" I yelled, causing both Winchesters to look at me. The anger started to come out as I whipped my head to face them. "This is all of our faults, not just Sam's. And in order to make sure this doesn't happen again, we have to stop keeping secrets and working behind each other's back."
There was a pause in the air, all of us silent once again as my words sunk in. Dean broke the short lived silence, "This thing, with Cas, and the book, ends now. Shut it down before somebody else gets hurt. You understand me?"
Sam says nothing at first before asking, "And what about you?"
"Oh I'm gonna find whoever did this. And I'm gonna rip apart everything and everyone that they ever loved. And then I'm gonna tear out their heart."
Even I'm taken back by Dean's words, looking at him as Sam does the same. Sam asks the dreaded question that even crosses my mind, "Is that you talking or the Mark?"
"Does it matter?" Dean asks with no emotion. With that, he turns and walks away, heading to the car.
Now, fear is added to the feelings I'm having. Fear of what is happening to my Dean. Fear that he's slipping again and this time he's embracing every bit of it.
Dean drops Sam and me off at the Bunker before leaving without a word.
I listen to Dean's words and go with Sam to where Cas and apparently Rowena is hiding out, working on the book. Sam waked into the stone building which was the hideout. Cas quickly greeted him, asking, "Where's Charlie?"
I walked in, making my presence known and surprising Cas and Rowena. "She's dead. The Stynes came after her because they thought she had the book." I turned and looked at Rowena with a straight face, "You must be Rowena."
"And you must be Brooklyn Myers. My son talked about you," Rowena smiled.
"Go figure," I mumbled.
Cas took a moment to process my words about Charlie before saying, "So Dean knows?"
Sam sighed, "Yeah."
"Well what now?" Cas asked?
"I'm shutting this down, I promised Dean-"
Rowena spoke up, grabbing everyone's attention, "Er, hello? Anyone want to tell me what's going on?"
"No," Sam and Cas said at the same time.
Cas looked back towards Sam and I, nodding towards Rowena, "What about her? I'd be happy to kill her, she just called me a fish." Sam said nothing, causing a long pause. "What about Dean?"
Dean rubbed the back of his neck, pulling out his phone, "We uh... we should be able to track him. I lowjacked the Impala a few weeks back just in case." I eyed Sam who looked at me, answering my look, "It was just for safety. Here."
A map with a flashing dot labelled Dean shows where he is. The phone dings with an email notification from Charlie. Sam opens it, his eyes going wide as he looks at the file. He quickly shows it to Rowena. "Is this what I think it is?"
Rowena took the phone, her eyes going wide as a smile crossed her face, "Oh, that little minx. She's cracked the code."
"Can you read the Book of the Damned with this?" Sam asked, hope in his voice.
"Every last word."
"What about the Mark?" I asked, taking a step towards her.
Smiling and looking at me, she answer, "We can cure the Mark of Cain."
Sam and I looked at each other with hope before Sam quickly turned to Cas, "Cas, go find Dean, make sure he doesn't go too far off the reservation, okay?"
I stepped forward, "I'm coming with you. You're going to need me."
Cas nodded in agreement before asking Sam, "What about you?"
"I'm saving my brother. I've been the one out there, messed up and scared. And alone. And Dean-"
"He did whatever he could to save you," Cas finished.
"Yes. I mean, it's become his thing. I owe him this. I owe him everything. Look I know he pretends he can ride the Mark out, but we all know the truth. We know what happens if we don't cure him. We know where that road ends."
I sighed, mumbling, "Black eyes and blood."
Sam nodded, looking between Cas and I, "Go find him. Keep him safe."
"Always," I said before turning and leaving with Cas.
I got a car, using that and the tracking device on the Impala to figure out where Dean was. The entire drive was silent, neither Cas nor I really knowing what to say.
After a couple hour drive we found ourselves at the Styne mansion. The second we walked in, the sight of blood and dead bodies filled our eyes and nose. My mouth parted in shock as I stepped over one of the bodies.
"Oh my God. Cas..." My voice trailed off.
"I know," Cas said, sighing before we headed downstairs. Once again we came across some bodies, these even more brutally killed then the ones upstairs.
My head shook as I covered my mouth in shock, "We have to find him Cas."
Cas quickly pulled out his phone, calling Sam and filling him in on what we just came across. When he hung up, he turned and looked at me, "Dean's headed back home."
I paused, still in shock, "Cas, what do we do?"
"We stop him before he hurts anyone else," He said, walking past me and out the door. I starred at the bodies for a moment, wondering what kind of anger he must have felt to reach this point. Again.
I raced to the Bunker, running in only to stop in shock. A kid, no older then 18 is standing there, tears running down his eyes. 2 bodies lay on the ground around him.
The kid shakes his head in fear, begging, "I'll do anything you want. Okay, please. You don't need to do this. Please."
Dean hesitates and I wonder if he's pulling himself back.
"Yeah, I do." Dean shoots the kid in the head, killing him instantly just as Cas and I race in.
"Dean!" I yell, my mouth parted in shock at the sight before me. "What did you do?"
Cas goes to the kid who was shot in the head, blood pouring out of him. "You killed him."
"I took down a monster. Because that's what I do. And I'll continue to do that until..."
"Until you become the monster," Cas said, turning to Dean.
I'm in shock, unable to move or speak. I feel like a ghost.
"You can leave now, Cas," Dean says with a straight face. Nothing, no regret, no realization at what he just did. He doesn't even care. I can feel that much.
Cas shake his head, "No. I can't. Because I'm your friend."
"Really? Well let me ask you something. Do you screw over all your friends?"
"Sam and I were trying to cure you! We still are!"
Dean scuffs, "Like hell."
I speak up, causing Dean to turn towards me, "No, he's right. We can read the book now, this can be over with." I approach him cautiously.
"You mean might be over with. You might find a spell that might take this crap off my arm? But even if you do, what's it gonna cost? 'Cause magic like that does not come free. No, it comes with a price that you pay in blood and I'm not letting anyone do that."
Dean walks past me to leave but Cas moves towards him, grabbing his shoulder and stopping him. "No! You're not. Maybe you could fight the Mark for years. Maybe centuries, like Cain did. But you cannot fight it forever. And when you finally turn, and you will turn... Brooke, Sam, and everyone you know, everyone you love... they could be long dead. Everyone except me. I'm the one who will have to watch you murder the world. So if there's even a small chance that we can save you, I won't let you walk out of this room."
"Oh you think you have a choice."
"I think the Mark is changing you."
"You're wrong," Dean says, still with a straight face but I can hear the anger in it.
I speak up, hoping to bring even a little bit of Dean back, "Dean, just come with us, please. Come with me."
Dean stares at me with no emotion and I find myself wanting to shrink back as I stare into his eyes.
Cas speaks up, "The Dean Winchester I know would never have murdered that kid."
"Yeah well, that Dean's always been kind of a dick."
"But that's the Dean I fell in love with," I said, making Dean's eyes look at me. "Please," I beg and for a moment I wonder if I see a spark in his eyes. If I did, it's short lived as Cas speaks, taking whatever spark was there away.
"Dean. I don't wanna have to hurt you."
Dean looks at the angel before him, smirking slightly, "I don't think that's gonna be a problem." He grabs Cas' hand and wrenches it off of his shoulder, then punches him hard in the face with his other hand.
"Dean! Stop! Stop!" I yell as he throws punch after punch at Cas, throwing him to the floor. Quickly, I pull out my gun, aiming it at the back of Dean before I call his name. He stops and turns towards me.
He approaches me slowly, shaking his head, "You won't kill me."
"No, but I'll hurt you, because I'll be damned if I lose you. You promised me forever, you promised me you would marry me."
"Yeah, well, some promises we can't always keep. Like we said, it's a shit coaster."
Dean starts to walk faster towards me and I give off a warning shot. He doesn't even flinch and approaches me. He grabs my wrist, twisting it just enough to drop the gun.
I throw a hard punch to Dean, causing his head to turn. He looks back at me, gripping my wrist tighter before tossing me hard towards the floor.
"Dean, stop," Cas says, standing with blood all over him.
Dean lunges at Cas again, seeming to beat him up worse than before. Cas laid on the floor, half conscious and coughing up blood. Dean pulls the angel blade from Cas coat. He grabs his tie and prepares to stab him.
"Don't! Stop!" I yell.
Dean stares coldly at Cas, holding the angel blade. He strikes with the blade, but stabs the book next to Cas' face. He stands and begins to walk away, speaking to Cas, "You and Sam stay the hell away from me. Next time I won't miss."
He stops, turns and looks at me. "And you?" Dean asks with no emotion.
I stare into Dean's eyes, unable to find the Dean I know. Horror fills me and I slowly shake my head. This isn't my Dean. Even as a demon Dean would never hurt me. Now? Now I'm not so sure.
Dean scuffs, mumbling, "Figures," before leaving.
A choke sob leaves me and my head dips as tears fall from my eyes. How did we get here so fast?
Oh, Dean, what are you doing!
The next chapter is going to be captivating and some may even hold your breath. I did when I was writing it. I know technically the next chapter is the last of Season 10 and that's usually when I'd end the book but with it so short of a book and the next season picking right where it left off I just plan on continuing it in this one.
For those who remember season 11, what scene are you excited for?
