Chapter 14
Brooklyn
The last time I felt this numb, this distant from my own body was when Dean died. But Dean's not dead, he's just not fully him right now.
My eyes look at the engagement ring that I've been twirling on my finger for who knows how long. Every twirl around my finger seems to bring a different memory to mind. Of Dean and I laying together in the bed. Dean proposing. Fishing with Dean and just talking about things.
Finally, the flush of memories stop and I find myself back in reality again.
I need to get Dean back.
Standing, I make my way down the hallways and to the weapons room where Sam and Cas are talking. They didn't know I was standing outside so they continued to talk.
"Cas, What are we supposed to do, huh? Just sit on our asses, do nothing?"
"No. We find Dean."
"And then what?! The only thing that stopped Cain was death. Do you want to kill Dean? Because I don't. And the only way I know how to save my brother is to cure the Mark. And, yes, I know there will be consequences, but not you, not Dean, not Brooke, no one can tell me what those consequences are. So I'm not gonna let my brother destroy himself on a guess."
I made my way inside, grabbing everyone's attention.
"Brooke..." Sam said, surprised to see me there.
"Dean's not gone, but he's almost there, and realistically, there is nothing that any of us can do to change that. He has to fight it himself, and we're going to make him want it."
"How?" Cas asked.
"First, we talk Rowena into helping us, then we find Dean."
Sam shrugged, "How? Rowena won't do anything unless Crowley's dead."
I eyed Sam with a determined face, "That's what she said to you, but she hasn't met me yet."
We all piled into a rental car that Sam's been using and headed to the hideout where Rowena was. She was sitting at the table, drinking tea and not seeming to pay attention to us. Yet, when she spoke, she spoke directly to us.
"Hello, kidos. Just in time for tea, unless somethings on your mind?"
"Enough games, you're going to help us get Dean back," I said, angry.
Rowena shrugged, smiling, "By all means, I'd love too. That is, if you do what I ask."
I fast walked up to Rowena, grabbing her hair and tossing her to the pillar. I pulled out a gun, pointing it at her. "Hollow tips filled with witch-killing brew."
She laughed at me, eyeing me, "Feisty. I'm starting to see what makes you and Dean so connected. Dearie, you won't shoot me, you need me."
As she says those words I shoot past her, making her jump and look at the hole in the pillar where the bullet hit. "Your right, I may not be able to kill you, but I'll be damned if I don't hurt you." I grabbed her arm, keeping the gun pointed at her. "No one wants Crowley dead as much as I do, trust me, but right now we're on a time crunch. So, what else do you want?"
Rowena eyes me, making me release her and letting her slowly move back to her seat as she spoke. "My freedom guaranteed, and the codex."
I looked at Sam, watching him sigh and nod.
Cas looked between us, "Sam, Brooke, you can't be-"
Sam cut in, "Do you know which spell?"
"I do," Rowena nodded.
"Sam, this is a mistake."
I turned, looking at Cas. "Probable. But mistakes are made to be fixed after the problem's solved." I turned back to Rowena, "Do the spell and you'll get what you want."
Rowena started to grab her stuff, getting everything ready. She stood, reading the Book of the Damned and translating it. "Something made by God, but forbidden to man."
"Forbidden?" Sam asked, confused.
Cas spoke up, "The forbidden fruit?"
"No," Sam huffed then looked at Rowena who looked impressed. "The actual apple is the first ingredient?"
"Of course it is," I sighed, crossing my arms. "What's next?" I asked Rowena.
Rowena read the next ingredient, "Something made by man, but forbidden by God."
Sam nodded, "Okay, well, God forbade false idols, right?"
"The Golden Calf," Cas said.
"Wasn't that destroyed?" Cas eyed Sam who sighed, "Great. What's the third ingredient?"
Rowena read it before looking up, shaking her head, "The third ingredient, it's impossible."
"What is it?" I asked?
"Loosely translated, my heart."
Cas took a step forward, "It's not impossible at all."
Making a face, Rowena scuffed, "Not my literal heart, feathers. Something I love, the spell calls for me to kill it."
"A sacrifice," Sam said.
"Precisely. The book will grant freedom from the curse, but it wants something in return."
I shrugged, "Well, don't hold back, what is it?"
"Bring me something I love, I'll kill it. I want my freedom too much to make a fuss over that. The problem is, I don't love anything."
"What about Crowley?" Cas asked?
"Happy to kill him. Let's not call it love."
Cas made his way over to me, "I don't believe you. Everyone loves something." He placed two fingers on her forehead, pausing for a moment before pulling away. "Polish boy. Oskar."
Rowena's eyes went wide, taken back by his words. "I'm sorry. Oskar? You saw Oskar?"
"Who is he?' Sam asked?
"Who was he? Uh, a peasant boy, his family helped me through some difficulties, 300 years ago."
Sam's cell suddenly rings, causing him to answer it and walk away. I pulled the attention back, looking at Rowena. "Well, he must still be alive or something for it to still be a possibility."
Rowena eyed me, smiling slightly, "You remind me a lot of me. Hard headed, determined to get what you want."
"Your right, and what I want is that Mark off Dean."
Sam approached us, holding a plastic bag in his hand and handing it to Cas. "Cas, take this. It's Dean's hair. You need it for the spell. Cas, I need you to do this for me. Make the spell happen whatever it takes, please."
"What about me?" I asked?
"You and I are going to fine Dean."
"Where do we even start?" I asked?
Sam paused, taking a breath, "Nebraska."
We change into our FBI suits before heading out. We pass some police tape and head towards the shack. A girl is sitting in the ambulance, saying over and over, "He just let them die."
Sam and I walk into the shack to be greeted by the Sheriff. "Agents. Maybe you can tell me what in the hell is going on here."
Wish we could.
We notice two guys lying dead on the floor, and by the look on Sam's face he knows them.
"The way the girl outside tells it is one of your boys came in hot, got his partner killed, then went some kind of samurai on that son of a bitch over there. I knew that boy was trouble when he first walked in."
Sam looks upset and quickly leaves, causing me to thank the Sheriff before chasing after and following in step with Sam.
"Well, we're on the right track," I said but Sam says nothing as he opens the car door to climb in. "Sam..." I start, causing him to stop and look at me. I let out a shaky breath, "I know it looks like I'm doing fine, but... what if we can't get Dean back? What if he's too far gone?"
Sam approaches me, putting his hands on my shoulders, "Hey, we'll get him back. If anyone can bring him back from the edge it's you. I believe that."
I nod, hoping he's right before he gives me a reassuring hug, for both our sakes.
We head out, changing and hoping we come across something that might lead us to Dean.
"Is that the Impala?" Sam asks, making me look to see the Impala parked outside of a motel.
Well, that works.
We stop next to it, heading to the room that the car is parked in front of. Sam pulls out his gun, knocking on the door, "Dean, its Brooke and I."
There is no answer and Sam breaks open the door. There is a broken chair by the door. He turns on the lights, revealing the rest of the room which is trashed. He looks around, approaching the bed where the Impala keys lay with a note "She's all yours".
"Sam," I said, causing him to turn towards me. He knows what I want to say, but he won't let me as he's already heading out of the motel room.
Suddenly my phone rings, causing me to quickly put it on speaker. I grab Sam's arm, making him stop and look at the phone.
"Dean," Sam says.
"I gave it a shot," Dean says, sounding distant.
I spoke up, "Baby, listen, whatever you did, whatever is happening, please, just come home. Come back to us."
Dean continued, "Hell, I even worked a case. I gave everything I had to beat this thing down."
"I saw. I saw Rudy."
"Well, then, you saw what I did."
"No, that wasn't you," Sam said, shaking his head.
"Sure as hell felt like me. Listen, I'm done."
"No. No, you're not. Dean."
"I'll text you an address. It's time to say goodbye."
"Dean..." I start, but Dean is already hanging up the phone. I stare at the phone with a shaky hand before it dings with a text.
Sam shakes his head, sucking in a breath. "We have to go and get him back."
"No..." I start, making Sam look at me. "I have to get him back."
"Brooke..."
I give Sam a sadden smile, "You said it yourself. If anyone can bring him back, it's me. I'm sorry Sam." I pull out my knife and use the handle of it to hot Sam over the head. He is knocked out and drops to the ground. I stare at him for a moment before swiping the keys from him. I climb into the Impala and sped off.
I parked the Impala outside the closed restaurant, but lights on inside tells me that this was indeed the place Dean had texted me. The sun was still up, letting me soak it in once more before I took a deep breath and headed in.
Dean is standing in the middle of the restaurant with Death standing behind him. A being I had never come across, but the darkness around him seemed to give him away.
"I'm guessing your Death," I said, eyeing the man.
He said nothing, instead Dean asked, "Where's Sam?"
"Chasing dreams," I said, not lying. "This isn't about him, this is about you and me."
Death spoke up, "You're not entirely wrong."
I started to walk towards Dean as I talked. "Dean, whatever you're thinking of doing, don't. There's another way."
He shrugged, "Maybe, but I can't wait to find out. I know I promised you forever, I promised you a lot of things that I haven't been able to keep, but there is one promise I'll always keep. I can't let you get hurt because of me."
You could hear the plead in my voice, "I'm here, Dean. I'm alive. Just come with me and we can forget about all of this."
Dean gave me a small, fake smile, "That's the plan."
I looked at him confused, unsure of what he meant. Death explained.
"Our conundrum is simple. Dean cannot be killed, and the Mark cannot be destroyed, not without inciting a far greater evil than any of us have ever known."
"What evil?" I said, making a face.
"The Darkness."
"What the hell is that?"
Dean sighed, "Exactly what it sounds like."
"Even if I remove Dean from the playing field, we're still left with you. Sam can be dealt with, but you? You and Dean are connected, meant to be, and even if Dean leaves then you will always chase after him. You will always be connected to him, unless we break that connection."
I scuffed, shaking my head, "So what? You're going to erase my memories or something?" Dean is silent, looking down at the ground as the look of shame washes over him. I'm in disbelief at first as I realize that exactly what they planned to do.
Hoping to seem more confident then I really was and hoping to reach Dean, I shrugged. "Go ahead, do it, because it won't change anything. I love you Dean, not because of some meant to be shit, but because you make me smile, and laugh, and you make me feel beautiful and smart. You're an asshole and a jerk at times but your kind, and caring, and loving. You're my Dean Winchester and nothing, not even taking my feelings or memories will change that."
I approach him, stopping right in front of Dean, meeting his eyes as I look at him with a stern face. "So if you want to stop me, if you truly have given up on me, on us, then you're going to have to kill me."
Dean stares at me, sadness in his eyes at my words. He knows I mean them, but I don't want too. I don't want to die, I don't want to leave Dean, Sam, Cas, or my brother. But I refuse to live without Dean, without any of them.
Death spoke up, referring to my last words, "That would have been my second choice."
I send a glare at Death, wishing I could use his name against him. Instead, I turn back to Dean, praying that my words affected him enough to snap back.
His eyes are distant and I know what he's about to say.
"Dean?" I say, my voice breaking a bit.
"I'm sorry, Brooke," Dean mumbled, his eyes dipping down.
I take a step back, shaking my head as tears fill my eyes. No, no this can't be Dean, this can't be. But it is, I can feel his heart racing and the tiredness that has taken over him.
He's tired, he's given up, and he's done.
"Dean! Don't do this," Sam says, rushing in, overhearing our words.
There is a pause in the room as I suck in a shaky breath, puffing my chest out. "Sam, go home," I try to say confidently.
"What?" Sam asks, confused.
Slowly, I bend down to my knees, tears slowly falling from my eyes no matter how badly I try to hold them in. But I can't.
I meet Dean's eyes as he stares down at me. "Till death do us part, I guess," I half mumbled, but I knew he heard me.
Death walks over to Dean and hands him a large scythe that comes up to his shoulder. Dean turns away from me and takes the scythe slowly, looking it over with sadness.
"Please. Do me the honor," Death says.
Sam shakes his head, trying to stop Dean, but listening to my words and not moving. "Dean, don't. It's Brooke."
Dean doesn't respond or even show any sign that he heard his brother, instead he just stares down at me. He looks down, looking scared for a moment before rolling it back and facing me.
"Close your eyes."
Tears are continuing to fall in a slow speed, my mouth parted in shock as I slowly shake my head.
"Brooke, close your eyes."
I pull my eyes away from Dean, looking down as a sob leaves my lips. I catch sight of my engagement ring and slip it off my finger before reaching up and undoing the necklace Dean gave to me, all those years ago in Hell.
Looking back up, I meet Dean's eyes. "You saved me in Hell, and you promised me that I would never have to go back there. And its okay, I'm ready. But I need you to know, that I always have, and always will, choose, you."
I laid down the ring and necklace between us. Dean hesitates, looking conflicted as a tear falls from his face.
"It's for family you must proceed, Dean," Death says.
Dean's eyes move from the necklace to the ring, staying on it as his mouth parts slightly. Tears continue to fall from both of our eyes.
"To be what you are, to become what you've become will only make your love falter. Do it. Or I will," Death says.
Dean looks anguished as he looks at Sam before looking back at me. We look intently at each other, my mind and soul getting lost in his eyes like they used to always do. Like, even as I face my death, they still do. My Dean is back, and knowing that gives me the courage to face whatever comes next.
"Forgive me," Dean says with a small nod.
I smile and nod through the tears, "Always."
As Dean rears back to swing the scythe, I slam my eyes shut, preparing for the impact. Instead Dean swings the scythe, misses me and stabbing Death in the chest behind him. Death turns to ash and crumbles into dust on the floor. Sam and Dean look at each other in shock as my eyes go from the pile of ash to Dean.
Quickly I stand as Dean engulf me in his arms, tears falling from his eyes as he buries his head in my neck. "I'm so sorry," He mumbles against me.
"It's okay, it's okay," I sooth, letting out a breath of relief.
Dean pulls away, bending down and picking up the ring and necklace. He grabs my hand and slips the ring on my finger before clipping the necklace around my neck.
"I love you," Dean says, taking my hand and giving it a small squeeze.
"I love you too, so much," I say, giving him a kiss before hugging him again. We pull away to have Sam smile in relief and hug his brother as well.
The sound of shrieking is suddenly heard and we all look around before looking at each other.
"That sound right to you?" Dean asks.
Suddenly, red lightning crashes through the roof and strikes Dean's forearm. His arm and the Mark glow red and crackle until the Mark disappears. The red lightning is blasted from Dean's arm and goes back through the roof into the sky.
Dean is breathing heavily, looking at where the Mark once sat only to find it just faintly red. He looks up at Sam and I in shock while Sam and I smile in relief.
Rowena did it.
We quickly leave the restaurant, Dean's hand in mine as we head towards the Impala.
Sam, smiling, looks at Dean, "This is good. Dean, this is good. The Mark is off your arm. Nothing crazy happened."
Sarcastically, Dena says, "Yeah. I'm sure everything's perfectly fine."
Suddenly there is a loud crackling sound coming from the sky. The sky is glowing dark red and several red lightning strikes the ground within several feet of us, making me jump. The red lightning crackles across the sky and repeatedly strikes the ground all around us.
"What did death call this?" Sam asked.
"The Darkness," Dean says, looking up at the sky with fear.
"Sounds about right," I said.
The ground starts rumbling and columns of black smoke erupt from the spots where the red lightning struck. They converge on one spot into a huge rolling cloud of black smoke. We watch as the cloud starts to move in our direction.
"Get in the car!" Dean yelled.
We quickly run to the Impala. Sam slides into the backseat while I slide into the front and Dean starts the car. He backs it up to pull out only to get the rear wheel stuck in a large hole. The tire spins as Dean accelerates to get out of the hole and away from the cloud.
"Dean," Sam says.
We all look up, watching the cloud roar towards us.
"Dean," I said, my head turning and looking at Dean with fear. He looks at me, equal fear in his eyes. He takes my hand while Sam puts his hands on either of our shoulders. The Darkness envelops the Impala and everything goes black.
Go watch the video up top because it is perfect. I came across it and had to share it on here because it's so perfect!
Hope you enjoyed the chapter! It was a breath holder. Now, onto season 11. I'm planning/hoping to continue Brooke and Dean's love story to the end of Supernatural and I have so many plans for so many episodes so let's hope I can!
