Chapter 27
Chapter 27
Brooklyn
Confusion fills me like none other before. It's the type of confusion that honestly makes you think that everyone around you is crazy and you're the only sane person around.
Right in this moment, that's how I feel as I look at Sam and Dean.
"Wait, you think this is God?" I asked, pointing to Chuck who stands in front of us.
Dean looked at me with a raised eyebrow, "You don't?"
I shake my head, still pointing at Chuck, "That's not God, I know this guy."
"You do?" Sam asked, now equally confused.
"Yeah, I met him in Hell. He's the one..." My words drifted off as realization hits me like a hard slap to the face. I drop my hand and turn to Chuck who smiles slightly as he notices my shocked expression. "He's the one that sent me to Dean."
Dean fully turns to me, "Wait, what?"
I tuned to Dean, my words coming out in shock, "When I was in Hell, I met him. He helped me get out of Hell and find you."
Confused, Dean turns to Chuck and asks, "You did? Why?"
"For this exact reason right now. To bring you two together," He nods to us both.
Waving his hand, Dean stops any future conversations for a moment, "Wait, what the hell's going on here, exactly?"
"I'm happy to... fill in the blanks, but maybe we should go somewhere where we could actually sit down."
"We're not going anywhere with you. Okay, how do we even know that you're really Chuck and not just some..." Suddenly, we're all at the Bunker. "Crazy spell," Dean finishes as he looks around in shock while Sam looks amazed.
I notice a body behind Chuck and look past him, "Kevin?" I asked, slightly happy to see him but just as confused.
"Guys!" Kevin says with a wide smile as everyone turns to him. "You're looking stressed. It's cool. Trust Chuck. Whatever it is he needs you to do, he must think you can handle it. I always trusted you."
"Yeah, that ended well," Dean mumbled, feeling overwhelmed.
Sam shook his head, "How did you... Are you okay, or-"
"Um... Yeah, I mean, you know, given the circumstances."
Chuck, still smiling, turned to Kevin, "Kevin, you've been in the Veil long enough. It's time you had an upgrade." He waved his hand and Kevin transformed into soul-light, ascending through ceiling.
Dean and I watched with gapped mouths, both of saying at the same time, "Holy crap."
With everything still being processed in our minds, we found ourselves finding a spot to sit. Sam sat in a chair with Chuck next to him while Dean sat on the library steps, and I sat on the outer ridge of the pillar next to him.
Sam's face was like a young boy who was meeting their idol. Dean's was starring off, still processing everything, and almost nervous. As for me, I couldn't help but cross my arms and stare off, slightly angry.
Moving a little in his chair, Sam started to speak, "Okay. So, wow, um, Chuck... Well, I guess we don't call you that, huh?"
"I prefer it," Chuck nodded.
Good, because I wasn't going to start calling him anything else. Except maybe asshole.
"Okay, uh, Chuck. I'm sorry. You're gonna have to give us a moment to start to process. We didn't even know you were around. I mean, we knew about Chuck, but we just didn't know about... Chuck. I mean, I was hoping you were around. I prayed and I... but I don't know if they got, uh, lost in the spam or if-"
"Sam," Dean stated.
"Yeah?'
"Babbling."
"Okay," Sam said and shut his mouth.
Chuck turned, facing Dean, "I'm getting that not everyone's totally on board."
Dean fidgeted almost nervously as he spoke, as if he was walking on ice and one wrong word would make it break. "Here's the thing, um... Chuck... And I mean no disrespect. Um... I'm guessing you came back to help with the Darkness, and that's great. That's, you know, fantastic. But you've been gone a... long, long time."
I was getting tired of this "beating around the bush" stuff just because he was God. That irritation made me speak up, not holding any words back. Unlike Dean, I was running across the ice.
"I'll just say it, where the Hell have you been? I mean, do you know how much of a shit show this all is?"
"Brooke..." Dean tried to stop me, but I pushed myself off the pillar, anger in my stance and voice. "No, he needs to know how much of a royal shit show this is. I mean plagues, wars, slaughters. And now your sister, the Darkness, is running around free as a bird and you're just sitting by like its happy go lucky land. I mean did you even see it or did you just put us on mute?"
"Brooke..."
Chuck held his hand up, stopping Dean, "No, Dean, she's right." He looked ta me and sighed, "I was aware."
His words surprised Dean and Sam, but only Dean spoke up, "But you did nothing. And, again, I'm not trying to piss you off. You know, I don't want to turn into a pillar of salt-"
"Honestly, wouldn't care right this moment," I said, shaking my head.
"Okay. People... People pray to you. People build churches for you. They fight wars in your name, and you did nothing."
Chuck nodded, glancing at the ground for a moment, "You're frustrated. I get it. Believe me, I was hands-on, real hands-on for, wow, ages. I was so sure if I kept stepping in, teaching, punishing, that these beautiful creatures that I created... would grow up. But it only stayed the same. And I saw that I needed to step away and let my baby find its way. Being overinvolved is no longer parenting. It's enabling. And I hope someday you understand what I'm saying."
Dean's eyes started to tear up at Chuck's words and how little he truly cared. "But it didn't get better."
"Well, I've been mulling it over. And from where I sit, I think it has."
I scuffed, "What shows have you been watching?"
Dean nodded to his spot where he sat, "Well, from where I sit, it feels like you left us and you're trying to justify it."
"I know you had a complicated upbringing, Dean, but don't confuse me with your dad."
Oh hell no, I'm not letting someone talk to my husband like that.
Waving my hands around, I put on a fake smile, "Okay, I'm sorry, I know we're all tip toing around this because it's... God sitting here, but excuse me if I'm not entirely happy with you right now."
"It's understandable, I've put you all through a lot. But it's made you stronger," Chuck nods.
My eyes go wide, "Stronger? That's the word you're going to use?" I want to curse, to yell and scream, but something stops me. I shake my head, shaking that anger away and looking off, "I need or a shot or-" Before I can finish my words a beer and a shot appear on the table in front of me.
I glare at Chuck and say, "This changes nothing," Before taking the shot. I grab the beer and sit down at the table, glaring off. Dean walks over, taking the beer from my hands and taking a swig of it as well before sitting next to me.
Chuck sighs and leans on the table, getting back to business it seemed. "You have to understand this about the Darkness... she's relentless, a force beyond human comprehension. It's the only reason I came off the sidelines."
"Must have been great being her brother, huh?" Sam half joked.
"It was the worst," Chuck said with a straight face, knocking any half smile Sam had off his face. "Always telling me what to do, making me do what she wanted. I mean, you guys know how that works."
"So, where is she?" Dean asked?
Chuck shrugged, "No freakin' idea. She's warded herself specifically against me. What have you come up with?"
"Less than nothing," I mumble, putting the beer to my lips.
Nodding, Chuck glances at the table, "Well... matter of time. I've always had faith in you... even if you didn't return the favor. Where's the guest room? I could use a shower."
"Uh, it's, um... just down the hallway, the fourth door on the left," Sam pointed off, causing Chuck to stand.
Dean glances at me before sighing, "Hey, Chuck. You know that she's got Lucifer, right?"
"Uh-huh."
Sam looks at Chuck, waiting for him to say something else but he doesn't. "The way we heard it, um... last time when you bottled up the Darkness, it took more than just you. I mean, we heard that Lucifer was involved."
"No."
Dean rose a brow, "No?"
"Lucifer was perhaps my greatest hope and my bitterest disappointment. Do you think if I could have trusted him for a moment, I would have put him in the Cage? And I wasn't gonna mention this, but thank you so much for springing him," Chuck said, mad. "Now, as bad as he was, after all this time in prison, he's probably worse. And by now, he could have formed an alliance with Amara. Not walking into that trap, guys. So, no. Thus spake the Lord." With that, he turns and walks away.
I lean my arms on the table, "Well, that could've gone better."
Sam looked at me for a minute before sighing, "Listen, Brooke, I'm not trying to cross a line or anything, but... why are you so mad at God?"
"You're not?" I rose a brow at Sam.
Dean glanced at his brother, "I mean, we are, but you... As hot as it kind of was-"
"Spoke without a care?"
Sam nodded, "Sort of."
Leaning back in my chair, I picked at the table as I spoke. "Me and my entire bloodline are sent to Hell when we die and he has sat around doing nothing. When he finally shows up, he sends me to Purgatory, and as happy as I am to have found you, Dean, it doesn't change things."
With those words to silent the boys, I stood and headed to my room. I changed my clothes and climbed into bed, just starring off for awhile before my door opened. Dean stepped in, in silence, slipping off his shoes and shirt before crawling into bed next to me.
"I'm sorry," I said, my back to Dean.
"For what?"
My body turned and I faced Dean, "For how I acted. I was just mad and confused and... disappointed."
Dean looked up at the ceiling while one of his hands reached over and sat on my thigh, "No, I get it, I am too."
"I can't believe God is sleeping in our spare bedroom," I said with a small smile.
"Yeah, sounds like the beginning of a bad joke," Dean said with a smile.
"Or a dirty one," I said, making Dean laugh right out loud. Once his laughter died down, I spoke again. "None the less, I'll keep my mouth shut."
Pausing as he shrugged slightly, Dean turned his head and looked at me, "It was kind of hot though."
I lightly hit his chest before moving closer to him and laying my head on his chest, letting sleep take over.
The next morning, Sam and I got to work on our laptops, looking for Amara. The early start was starting to get to me though, making my eyes hurt, and my body crave for some coffee.
As if Dean could read my mind, he enters with three cups of coffee, asking, "Anything?"
"Nada," Sam sighed, shaking his head as he took the coffee from his brother.
Dean walked over to me, handing me my own cup as I ran my hand through my hair. "Keep em coming," I mumbled, starring at the screen as I took a sip of the coffee. The warmth of it and caffeine started to wake me up, but only a little.
Leaning back in his chair, Sam sighed, "You know, I can't believe I'm gonna say this, but, for once, I actually wish Rowena was here. I mean, maybe she could track down Amara. She's done it before."
"Yeah, but you can bet she and the Book are gonna stay stashed until this whole thing is over. Where's Chuck?" Dean asked?
"Sleeping in."
"Does God sleep?"
With a heavy breath through my words, I said, "I know he takes really long showers. He walked out of the bathroom during the night with my bathrobe on."
Dean eyed me, "Really?"
"Yeah, I'm burning the thing when I get it back," I said, taking another sip of my coffee.
Sam faintly smiled at my comment before he paused for a moment. When he spoke, he shook his head slightly, "You know, I know this is a really strange situation and all, but it's also really amazing, you know? I mean, it's God." He begins to laugh, "There's so many things I want to ask him, uh, like, uh, the planets, you know? Why are they round? Or ears. I always thought they were strange-"
Motioning for his brother to cool it, Dean eyed his brother, "Okay, fanboy, calm down. Let's stay focused. We got to find Lucifer before it's too late."
"Too late?"
"Amara is... she's in my head."
Sam looks at his brother sharply while I look at him curiously. Dean hadn't mentioned this before, making me a little worried. What was she showing him? Why was she distancing herself from me, all of a sudden? I mean, I'm happy she is, but if she's mad then that's worst.
Dean put his hands up, "Hey, I didn't ask for it, okay? She just showed up. But she's showing me visions of Lucifer. By Lucifer, I mean Cas, and he looks like crap, like she's really doing a number on him."
Without missing a beat, Sam turns to me, asking, "What about you?"
"What about me?" I asked, confused.
"Well usually if she pops up for Dean, she pops up to you too. Did she say anything?"
I shake my head, "No. I haven't seen her since the wedding."
Sam's eyes went wide and Dean wiped his head to look at me, "The wedding? When was she at our wedding?"
I looked at Dean, "She popped into my room when I was getting dressed. She gave me a bracelet, gave me her blessing so to speak, and left."
Dean hummed slightly in response, looking confused while Sam looked a little worried. Before anything could be said though, Chuck entered the room with coffee and a box of donuts. Quickly, Sam turned his attention to Chuck, "Hey. Morning."
My eyes glanced over at Chuck, fully turning when I saw what he was wearing. Dean glanced at me, before following his eyes and doing a double take. "Are you wearing Brooke's robe?"
Chuck looked down and smiled, "It's very comfortable."
I couldn't help but glare at Chuck before turning to my computer, "Yup, burning it," I mumbled.
Pulling out the seat at the head of the table, Chuck began talking, shaking his head. "I'm telling you guys, it's a mistake to get mixed up with Lucifer. Much as it pained me, I had to walk away. Too much drama. Do you have any bacon?"
"You eat bacon?" Dean asked, surprised.
"Yeah, or course."
Quickly, I perked up as I finally found something. "Hey, guys, this just came up. Looks like that fog, Amara fog, hit another town. Only this one wasn't as lucky as the last one. Thousands died. Uh, I take that back, everybody died. Except for one man."
Dean squinted his eyes as he turned to Chuck, "How'd you miss that one?"
"She's baiting me. I can't respond every time. I won't be manipulated."
"Yeah, but thousands of people are dead," Dean gestured to my computer.
"Unfortunately. So find her," Chuck nods as he stands up and walks out.
A groan left my lips as I laid my head into my arms, "Bite your tongue, Brooklyn. Bite your tongue." I felt Dean's hand on my back, lightly rubbing it in a soothing matter that calmed my nerves.
Suddenly, Dean's phone rang, grabbing our attention. He pulled out his cell and looked at it, confused, "It's Metatron."
"Well, wasn't expecting that," I mumbled as Dean answered the phone and put it on speaker.
"What?"
"I notice you've been in touch with Chuck. Well, I've got some... information you're gonna need to know."
Dean, Sam, and I glanced at each other, confused. "Okay, say it," Dean nodded.
Metatron quickly answered, "No. It's got to be in person... something I got to show you."
This better be good.
I love Brooke and her actions. I swear she said everything to God that we all wish we could have in this. Hope your enjoying it!
