A quiet figure stood, unsure of whether to go forth into the crowd, or to stay where they believed they belonged. In the dark, like a star without its light. Luckily for them, Xadia was holding a ball that was moon-themed, in honor and celebration of the Moonshadow elves. Their figure was adorned with intricate pieces of fine jewelry and starry cloth that gave off a glow, a lighthouse in what appeared to be a vast sea of nothing. But no one came up to them to ask for a dance. No one noticed or appeared to realize what beauty laid before them.

So the figure just stood and waited near the corner, checking the ruffles and folds of their outfit, making sure they were crisp, in the event that someone did want to dance. Searching the room, their eyes were only met with wide smiles under hundreds of half-masks. A masquerade, everyone a stranger.

The golden doors were kept open as floods of people kept coming in, greeted by butlers that took their coats and ushered them into the palace. The waves of people looked the same, until (Y/N) spotted starry skin, gently glittering under the soft candles that hung from the ceiling. Their mind started to stir in anticipation. How beautiful was his soft smile, and how delicate he was.

He seemed to speak in a refined manner, gently accepting that one of the butlers take his coat. He moved with pride, step after step, seemingly floating across the ground. But soon, (Y/N) lost sight of the wondrous man in the crowd, and continued to stand still, trying to find where he was.

Hours went by, and someone had yet to ask the wallflower if they wanted to dance. They sat quietly, admiring the other guests as they enjoyed the night's festivities. The King himself had come around an hour or so ago, and officially started to put out refreshments. The tables were still crowded as people hurriedly snatched up the small finger sandwiches, drinks, and desserts. (Y/N) watched them eat, and started to salivate.

A little bite couldn't hurt.

They made their way through the crowd, and picked up an appetizer. Slowly sinking their teeth into it, (Y/N) smiled, realizing how hungry they'd been.

About to pick up a glass of wine, someone gently bumped into them.

Oh, I'm sorry about that.

It's alright, it's my fault.

Too flustered to say anything else, or even look at the person who'd bumped into them, (Y/N) started to walk away, picking up the pace, hands void of the wine glass. Their face was burning, shaking fingers gently touching the heated patch of skin.

Ah, why do I even bother?

Hours and hours after the small encounter, it was time for the final slow dance under the blue moon. The light cerulean light shone on the white tiled floor, and the whole ballroom turned into a sea of light. Everyone gasped as the soles of their shoes glowed as they touched the ground. Puddles and drops of gold appeared near people's feet and they laughed with wonder as it spread, spilling all over the walls, creating stars among the pillars of black and white.

(Y/N) looked on into the crowd as couples gathered for a final waltz, strangers inviting strangers to dance. They sighed and turned, feeling left out, a part of them not wanting to see if they couldn't be a part of it.

But over the music, they heard quiet footsteps echo behind them, and felt a small tap upon their shoulder. Turning around, their eyes met those of wonder. Stardust seemed to linger in the stranger's eyes as they spoke, a low rumble of the tongue in the place of a language.

If I may, the elf started, bowing. May I have this dance tonight? He took (Y/N)'s hand and laid a gentle kiss on the top.

I... I don't see any reason to not allow you to, they replied.

He smiled and whisked them away to the ballroom floor, quickly joining the crowd. The quiet wallflower, being blown away by a handsome stranger who has the whole universe in his eyes, worlds at the tip of his fingers. He set a hand on their waist and intertwined the other in one of their own.

I'm guessing you don't come here often, love.

(Y/N) shook their head, smiling, blushing from the sudden contact.

I really don't. But it seemed like a good idea twelve hours ago. The stranger laughed, and oddly enough, (Y/N) could not have felt more smitten at that moment.

The pair danced in silence, the only sound being the orchestra and the footsteps of the many, many guests. (Y/N) had noticed many things during the quietness. The silvery complexion of their partner's hair, the naturally graceful poise that he carried himself with, and their galaxy-like skin. They looked up, only to find that he was staring down at them, eyes gentle, but unwavering. Confident.

A star elf, they thought, maintaining eye contact.

I haven't asked for your name. The stranger chuckled like (Y/N) had just told them a joke. He cocked an eyebrow and responded smartly:

It's normally tradition that we don't know each other, that's the whole point of a masquerade, love.

He paused after seeing their eyes wrinkle in disappointment, a mist fall over their complexion.

However, I'd be delighted to tell you after the dance.

The crowd parted as the ring of the bell indicated that it was time to leave and go home. Groups of people walked out of the palace, out the golden doors they'd arrived through. However, the star elf I'd met didn't leave. He stayed by my side, gingerly holding my hand. He smiled and leaned in close, whispering into my ear.

Let's go to the balcony.

I nodded and he took me to a small overhanging area outside of the grand building.

It's not especially romantic, if you don't mind.

Not at all. I giggled, appreciative of the charm. He let out a sigh and turned to me.

Aaravos.

Huh?

My name is Aaravos.

Oh. I felt especially stupid at that moment, considering I was the one who had asked him to introduce himself. I barely managed to stammer out a response.

My name's (Y/N).

What a lovely name.

Thanks, your's too. I silently groaned at my own response. How on Earth was I this awkward? One night, just this one, I meet someone who's relatively interested in me, and what do I do? Screw it up. But to my surprise, Aaravos just laughed. Not mockingly, but a genuine laugh. My face felt warm, everywhere felt warm as shivers ran down my spine.

I never anticipated for my night to be this lively. He gently clasped my other hand, thumbs massaging the backs of mine. It felt odd, having someone to hold onto. Yet, I never wanted to let go.

It's getting late, he whispered, head slowly dipping. I'm afraid I'll have to bid you farewell, love. Aaravos planted a kiss on my forehead and squeezed my hands. I sharply inhaled, not prepared physically or emotionally for that.

I'll see you soon.
