The nest
After several hours of much-needed rest, Kosu's team felt reinvigorated, their wounds and exhaustion largely healed thanks to the protective scrolls' restorative powers. With a renewed sense of determination, they set out to continue their mission.
The forest ahead seemed even more ominous and foreboding, the shadows lengthening as the sun began to set. Kosu kept his senses on high alert, his grip tight on his sword as the team cautiously made their way through the dense underbrush.
Suddenly, Klara, their scout, raised a hand, signaling the others to halt. "Wait," she whispered, her keen eyes scanning the area. "I think I've found something."
Kosu and the others followed her gaze, spotting a dark opening in the side of a rocky outcrop up ahead. "A cave?" Kosu murmured, his brow furrowing.
Klara nodded, her expression grave. "I believe so. And judging by the tracks and markings around the entrance, I'd say it's likely the goblins' nest."
The team exchanged wary glances, the gravity of the situation weighing heavily on them. Thorn's squad could be trapped somewhere inside, facing the full might of the goblin forces.
Kosu took a deep breath, steeling his nerves. "Alright, team. This is it – we found their nest, fight is envitable. But we can't rush in blindly. We need to plan our approach carefully."
He turned to Klara, his eyes narrowed in focus. "Klara, can you scope out the area and see if you can gather any intel on the goblins' numbers and defenses. The rest of us will hold position and prepare to move in on your signal."
Klara nodded. "Everyone, please stay in the position and secure the area, I will use my wind magic to scan the layout of the first floor of the cave from here."
Kosu raised an eyebrow. "From out here? How will you be able to get a clear picture of the interior?"
Klara frowned. "I can, but I won't be able to see the full extent of the lair or distinguish the different habitats from here."
Kosu nodded, his brow furrowed. "That's better than nothing, we'll need a more complete picture if we're going to plan our approach effectively."
Klara closed her eyes, her fingers weaving a familiar series of gestures. "Wind, carry my sight beyond these walls, unveil the first level of the cavern to me."
A swirling sphere of energy formed around Klara, glowing with a soft light. After a moment, the sphere expanded, projecting a holographic map of the cave's first level in front of the group.
The team studied the image, which showed a network of tunnels and chambers, but provided little detail beyond the basic layout.
"I can see the main entrance, as well as a few offshoots and larger chambers," Klara explained, her eyes scanning the map. "But I can't make out any specifics about the goblins' positions or the interior structures."
Kosu frowned, his fingers stroking his chin. "It's a start, but we'll need to get closer to gather more intel. Can you maintain this spell and lead us through the first level safely?"
Klara nodded, her expression determined. "I can try, but the farther we go, the more my vision will be limited. We'll have to proceed with caution."
"Understood." Kosu quickly gestured to the rest of the team. "Everyone, start updating the map to your devices. We need a more stable reference as we go deeper."
The group sprang into action, their fingers flying across the screens of their portable devices as they captured the details of Klara's projection. Within moments, they had a digital rendering of the first level's layout, which they could easily reference and annotate.
"Excellent work," Kosu said, his eyes scanning the updated map. "Now, let's move out, but remember - we can't afford a direct confrontation with the goblins. Our priority is to gather intel and locate their main lair, not engage them head-on. If we have to kill, kill them swiftly and silently."
The team nodded in understanding, their expressions grim. They knew that the goblin numbers and potential traps could easily overwhelm them if they weren't careful.
Klara took the lead, her wind magic guiding them through the winding tunnels. The holographic map on their devices provided a steadier, more detailed view of their surroundings, allowing the team to navigate more confidently.
As they pressed forward, the team encountered several more goblin patrols, but they managed to avoid detection by sticking to the shadows and taking cover in the alcoves Klara had spotted earlier.
"The main chamber should be just up ahead," Klara whispered, her eyes narrowed in concentration. "But I'm sensing a large gathering of goblins there. We'll need to be extremely cautious."
Kosu nodded, his mind racing. "Alright, everyone, stay low and move slowly. Klara, keep your magic ready in case we need a quick escape. The rest of you, be prepared to provide cover fire if necessary."
The team crept forward, their weapons at the ready, as they approached the entrance to the main chamber. The sound of chittering and growling grew louder, and they could see the flickering glow of torchlight spilling out into the corridor.
Pausing at the threshold, Kosu quickly surveyed the scene, his eyes scanning the chamber. Dozens of goblins were gathered around a central pit, their attention focused on something within.
"I count at least twenty-five hostiles," Kosu whispered, his grip tightening on his sword. "We'll need to find a way to thin their numbers without attracting their full attention."
The team members nodded, their expressions tense as they considered their options. Facing the goblins head-on would be disastrous, but they couldn't simply turn back now. They had to find a way to neutralize the threat and gather the intelligence they needed to complete their mission.
As they pondered their next move, the sound of a deep, rumbling growl suddenly echoed from the center of the chamber, sending a shiver down their spines. Whatever the goblins were guarding, it was clear that it posed a formidable danger to the intruders.
As the deep, rumbling growl echoed from the central pit, Kosu's eyes narrowed. "Whatever that is, we can't let it fall into the hands of the goblins. We need to act, but carefully."
He turned to his team, his voice low and urgent. "Klara, can you create a distraction to draw the goblins' attention?"
Klara nodded, her brow furrowed in concentration. "I can try to conjure a wind storm to stir up some commotion, but I don't know how long I can maintain it without exhausting my magic."
"That's all we need," Kosu replied. "The rest of you, get ready to move in and eliminate the goblins as quietly as possible. Focus on the guards first, then we'll deal with whatever's in that pit."
The team members nodded, their weapons at the ready. Klara began weaving her wind magic, her hands tracing intricate patterns in the air. Suddenly, a powerful gust of wind swept through the chamber, causing the torches to flicker and the goblins to scatter in confusion.
Seizing the opportunity, Kosu and the others sprung into action, their blades flashing in the flickering light. They moved with precision and speed, dispatching the startled goblins one by one, their movements silent and efficient.
As the last goblin fell, Kosu turned his attention to the central pit, his expression grim. "Alright, let's see what all the fuss is about."
As the team peered cautiously into the central pit, the true nature of the creature became disturbingly clear. Buried beneath the rubble was a strange, pulsating machine - a grotesque, mechanical "womb" that was continuously spawning goblins!
