LT. 13 No One Is Alone
The scene showed a dark and damp underground, the catacombs in Paris have existed for a long time and most of them have not been fully explored. This place was originally built to be the resting place of the eternal dead, a place for them to find their final resting place, but now it is so deep that God's hand can hardly reach, many miserable souls still cannot follow him to heaven.
In those dark tunnels there is not a single prayer, no crying or laughing of children, but the dead still know how to speak and will always talk about death in the darkness. The flickering light of the oil lamp kept moving in that narrow place, then when they reached a certain part of the tunnel, they stopped.
"So why did you bring me to this hellish place?" [Emilie]
The little girl was still confused, somewhat scared, this place she had never set foot in before.
"You brought the girl? Alright, you can leave." [Marguerite]
The follower walked out, leaving the girl inside.
"So what do you really want from me? I thought you only promised to help me get out?!" [Emilie]
Emilie gradually lost her composure.
"Little girl, calm down, there's not enough air in this place to talk that much." [Marguerite]
"So what do you want from me in the end?" [Emilie]
"We did plan to give you freedom... but I think the priest and that guy will somehow hunt us down to find you, so I just want you to stay here until they give up hope. How about it? Do you want that too?" [Marguerite]
She thought for a moment, but couldn't say anything.
"I don't know..." [Emilie]
Marguerite's face showed a smug expression, as she had guessed, now it was certain that she didn't want her to be able to escape from her grasp and escape easily. She wanted to keep her until the day of sacrifice... for the sake of the "mother" she always held dear.
"How about it, this place seems cramped for the two of us? Then I'll take you to a more spacious place, shall I?" [Marguerite]
Marguerite took her hand and led her, they walked through the narrow crypts, occasionally there were still skeletons scattered along the way, it made Emilie feel quite scared...
"If you're scared, just close your eyes, I'm still leading you." [Marguerite]
Gradually she felt the bright light and warmth from the sun, breathing evenly in the fresh air. She had left that dark place, when the light just blurred her eyes, there were birds chirping, the laughter of people working hard.
"I think this is a more suitable place to talk, maybe you will feel more comfortable." [Marguerite]
The two were then led into a small cafe and sat there to talk. Emile was still very curious, she looked around at everything, things she hadn't seen in a long time, she had never seen such a crowded place before, to the point where she could walk around this place all day without getting bored.
"You seem to enjoy everything here?" [Marguerite]
Marguerite's words made her suddenly come back to her senses.
"So what do you want from me in the end...?" [Emile]
"Let me tell you, nothing in this world is free...everything has a price. What do I want from you? I want to make it clear that you will have to join us." [Marguerite]
"Join us...?" [Emile]
The girl clearly still didn't understand what this offer was, what was the Church of Enlightenment? She had never heard of it before.
"Yes, that's the price for me helping you escape from that priest... walk with me for a while, I'll explain it to you, and I don't like sitting here for long." [Marguerite]
She stood up from her seat, but saw that Emilie was still sitting there, she was looking in another direction. Marguerite looked in that direction.
"Hm...really?!" [Marguerite]
"Please, can you buy it for me...I don't have any money." [Emilie]
"No, you idiot, I don't have that obligation." [Marguerite]
"But my father always said that if you ask politely and not too much, anyone with a good heart will help..." [Emilie]
"..." [Marguerite]
The two of them walked on the paved path, this was a neighborhood on the outskirts of Paris. It was not noisy or had cars running on the road like a bustling urban area, the rows of trees and crops created a feeling of closeness to nature like an old village that had existed for a long time, with houses still using old bricks and stones. But this place was actually a shelter for many followers of the enlightened church or members of the Paris branch of Manus Vindictae. They still lived and worked here like normal people.
"This is our main shelter to hide from the people of the Foundation. We will be loyal and follow the teachings of Mother Arcana... are you listening to me?" [Marguerite]
"Oh, yes..." [Emilie]
The girl was still enjoying the Crêpes she had just received while trying to process what Marguerite was saying.
"Oh my, I shouldn't have bought that for you..." [Marguerite]
She bent down and used a towel to gently wipe the crumbs from her mouth.
The two of them walked around the area, it was far from the city and there wasn't much to say, but to the girl, everything around her was very unfamiliar, she looked at the branches and grass on the stone-paved road, looked at the strange houses she had never seen before. At this point, even Marguerite couldn't stop her from doing anything, she just followed and watched over her.
"So, that's where we gather to discuss things and hold ceremonies, do you have any more questions?" [Marguerite]
"Miss, what kind of flower is this, I've never seen it before?" [Emilie]
"You're so annoying, but okay, this is a daisy, a Paris daisy..." [Marguerite]
Marguerite actually seemed to spend the whole day talking about the things around her and answering Emilie's questions, but strangely, the more she explained those things, the less annoyed she felt, still wholeheartedly explaining everything even though it was just the most basic things that a child should have learned. And deep down, she thought that the reason why the girl always wondered so much was probably because she hadn't been out of the church for too long, and it seemed like she knew that the mistake was indirectly caused by the enlightened church, she seemed to have understood something and also felt responsible for this matter...
By the time the sun was setting, both of them were exhausted and sat down on a bench. The lights were gradually turned on.
"Miss..." [Emilie]
"That's enough, I don't want to explain anything more." [Marguerite]
"It's not that I want to ask anything more, it's just...thank you, I know that you took the time to explain everything to me today, I know that you might not like it at all but you made me very happy and joyful...thank you again for all of that!" [Emilie]
Marguerite still had that expressionless face, but the little girl didn't know that this thank you was the second thank you she had received in her entire life...
"Don't bother, I'm really tired, but I'll still acknowledge that thank you..." [Marguerite]
"But...you really remind me of my father, when I was little I just stayed around the church and asked him about so many things, my father was also the one who raised me, he really couldn't take care of me because of my other siblings. But was I thinking too selfishly that day? Maybe if I could have explained everything to my father more properly, he wouldn't have been so sad." [Emilie]
Emilie was a little sad, but when she thought more carefully, she was able to understand her father.
"You're starting to miss him anyway, right? Just leave it at that, I'll take you back to visit him someday, okay? (That won't happen)" [Marguerite]
"If that's the case, then I'll thank you, someday I'll meet my father again and tell him what I saw in the outside world, he'll be happy too..." [Emilie]
Then she looked up at Marguerite again.
"Then can you finally explain to me about that enlightened church of yours...?" [Emilie]
Marguerite sighed, perhaps this was the thing that Marguerite didn't want the most, she didn't know how long she would have to hide these things, with someone she had considered a friend since when... the girl always believed in good words, but would she accept the dark truths that were eating away at those good things?
"I'll tell you more tomorrow, I still have a lot of things to do." [Marguerite]
She stood up and turned away. The girl saw that and stood up and followed.
"Then I'll wait until tomorrow, you promise to answer!" [Emilie]
"But I can see that you're a good person, if this beautiful place is a refuge for the church, then it can't be something bad, right? Why would that Foundation called St. Pavlov pursue you guys?" [Emilie]
Marguerite stopped, she turned around and looked straight into the girl's clear eyes. She gently stroked Emilie's hair affectionately.
"Well, you can think whatever you want right now..." [Marguerite]
A feeling welled up in Marguerite's heart that had been cold for so long, she had deceived so many people, killed so many people, but why did she feel so regretful? She had lived in lies for so long, but had she ever felt such sincerity in a word?
That night, when Emilie was fast asleep, there was an argument in that dark and silent cellar.
"Sir, no matter what, the Mother still needs someone to sacrifice, if you can't do it, then we will have to do it. How can we let her live?" [Believer]
"That's right, leader..." [Believer]
"I understand, you don't need to repeat it!" [Marguerite]
Those resolute words made everything fall into silence again.
"When that day comes, she will die. I will not take back what I have said." [Marguerite]
After that, the meeting was dismissed, no more opinions were expressed.
Since when did tears start rolling down over that unchangeable fate? No matter what, it is still the most beautiful tear and contains the last conscience of a person who always lives in sin.
Just hope that day will pass quickly as if it never happened...
