Bonnie's mind is working overtime.
In the past years, she has felt like she's cheating on her best friend with View, going behind her back and keeping secrets from her.
Now when she's home Bonnie once again has to lie for View.
Bonnie admits she might have been a little too excited when View messages her asking about the company hiring position, her loneliness took all the blame for that.
Back then, she thought that not having her bestie around every day was not worth going to work as her position was literally being the CEO's assistant.
Bonnie has lots of questions, but View's honesty about the reason why she wants to work in the company swaying her. They were great friends as well before, so of course, Bonnie would hire her with or without her best friend's dad's call.
Well, her best friend also stated clearly that she had no problem with Bonnie befriending her ex.
Sighing out loud, her thoughts were cut short when the driver pulled into the airport.
------
Quite sometime later, Bonnie glanced at her watch, wondering if she'd gotten the time wrong when suddenly, hands came from behind and covered her eyes.
"Guess who, Bon Bon." Bonnie's heart warmed at the sweet voice, turning around at her giggles.
The hands fall, following her motion.
Bonnie's throat bobbed as she struggled to hold back tears.
Standing in front of her with a smile brighter than sunlight is the one and only Mim Rattanawadee, her best friend since middle school. They have been through almost every moment of life together.
The biggest smile takes place on Bonnie's face, and she immediately wraps Mim in a crushing hug.
"Bon, you're crushing me."
"Let me hug you a little more. It's been five years."
Mim nods, blinking away her tears, and leans on her shoulder. She also misses Bonnie a lot.
"Have you gotten taller?"
The question makes Mim laugh.
"I may or may not grow a bit over there."
"Hmm, still shorter than me, that's good."
"Hey, how dare you."
Bonnie missed hearing Mim's nickname for her.
She finally stepped back and instantly let out a whistle.
"Woah, the air over there definitely changes you Mim." She eyed Mim from head to toe.
"Really? For better, I hope?" Mim asks, checking her outfit.
"Ohh, definitely." Bonnie gestures for Mim to do a twirl.
Mim's wearing a light yellow button-up shirt with a see-through effect paired with her comfortable matching color shorts.
Her style looks comfy and youthful but still mature enough for the age of 25.
"Gotta say, maturing is doing a great job on you Mim." Bonnie's in awe at her best friend's beauty.
"Speak for yourself Bon, if I see you a club.." Mim stops mid-sentence to tease Bonnie.
Bonnie rolled her eyes at their flirty behaviors. Something never changed.
"Come on, let's come home to surprise my parents."
The two linked arms, walking outside to the car.
"Miss Rattanawadee, welcome home." The driver bows and quickly takes her suitcase. When he's facing Mim again, she sends him a soft smile.
"There's no need to be formal. You have been driving me to school since I was a little girl anyway."
He smiles back, wiping the tears in his eyes as he opens the car door for them.
Mim gazes outside the window until she hears camera clicking sounds.
"You're acting weird Bon, anything I need to know?" Mim smirked while posing for Bonnie's camera.
"No, but I couldn't help but ask, you come home alone?"
Bonnie put her phone away after being satisfied with the pictures she had taken.
"What do you mean?"
"I just thought you would bring someone along."
"A girlfriend, perhaps."
Mim shakes her head, chuckling.
"I was there to study."
"I know, I know, but you're not studying all the time. Remember when you face timing me at one of your college parties?"
"Shush Bon, that was years ago." Mim peaks at the driver sitting up front.
"Exactly, so I think there must be a reason for you to stay for one more year before deciding to come back, right?"
....
"There was, but... not anymore." Mim's cheeks tinted a pinkish color.
Bonnie's stunned. She can't believe it, at this age, even when Mim can jokingly flirt around with her. She's still shy when asked about her love life.
"Aww, I hope that's not the reason you want to be back."
Mim updated Bonnie about the flings she had or the people that caught her attention, but not too much info about the relationship.
"Of course not, don't worry, you still have a chance to court me Bon."
"Who says I wanted to." Bonnie scoffed.
.."We're here, Miss Rattanawadee."
"That was quick, I won this time Bonnie." Mim stuck out her tongue, stepping out of the car.
Bonnie follows right after her, and they stand on the driveway to observe the house. Mim suck in a deep breath.
"Ready?"
"Yeah." With Mim's nods, they walked up to the house.
"Oh, Bonnie, come in dear, I'm just done cooking dinner."
Mim's mom turns her back to the door.
"It smells amazing Mom."
Her mom froze, and with a hand covering her mouth, Mim could see her shoulder started shaking.
Mim stands behind her mom, without wasting any seconds engulfing her in a tight hug, letting her tears flow.
The mom turned around in her arms to fully hold her daughter.
"Mim, my baby... you're finally home." She sobs.
Mim nods, burying her head into her mom's hair.
"Mim?" A new person entered the room.
Mim looked up, then one more time burst into tears.
"Dad, I'm home."
He runs to them with his strong arms, wrapping both of them into a family hug.
Bonnie blinked to stop her tears from falling while watching her best friend's family reunion.
"Come join us, Bonnie."
Mim and her mom held out their arms.
"I've got my fair share of Mim's hug time already."
The family gives her looks.
"But I wouldn't say no to this."
Bonnie joined in the hugs, smiling wide matching Mim's ones.
After having the first bite of her mom's cooking, Mim swears to herself that she will never leave home ever again.
"Thank you for dinner Mom."
"It was so delicious." Bonnie gives her two thumbs up.
Her mom sends a warm smile to them, and when she's about to pick up the plates, Mim stops her.
"Let me do it Mom, you already cooked for us."
"But you just got back, maybe leave it to the maid tomorrow." Her mom is concerned about her health.
"It would stink tomorrow. Don't worry Mom, it's nothing I haven't done before." Mim flexes her bicep and starts picking up the plates. Bonnie is fast to help her.
Mim thinks her mom is worried over nothing since their house has the most advanced dishwasher anyway, so she doesn't have to break a sweat pressing the buttons.
"All done?"
"Yes Mom, we didn't have to do anything."
"Sorry, I forgot to mention the dishwasher sweetie."
Mim's parents, along with Bonnie laugh at her pouty face.
"Come here, let's have desserts."
"This is so good Mom, how did you have the time to make all this?" Mim exclaims after tasting a piece of cake.
"Oh, I didn't make them, View sends fresh baked goods once every month."
"What?" Mim hadn't heard that name in almost five years, and now it was her mom who mentioned it.
The room went silent as the atmosphere immediately dropped down a notch. Her mom looked guilty, she didn't mean to drop the name like that.
Bonnie and her parent's eyes are glued to her, waiting to see her good or bad reaction.
Slowly, Mim's lips curve up to a reassuring smile, sending each one of them.
"P'View."
"Did she come here often, Mom?"
Unlike Bonnie imagining, her bestie didn't seem to hold any grudge against the name or the person. She could say her name out loud with confidence.
Bonnie stared at Mim in front of her while thinking how five years had passed. She still couldn't recall any time when View said Mim's name.
"No, she never showed up to our house."
"View always arranged a regular delivery."
Mim nods.
"Since when?"
"I think you know the answer sweetie, even after we moved here, View still sends it." Her dad answered.
Mim looks at her best friend, she's the only one who knows their new address.
"We told her to stop sending them because we don't like sweets, but View said she's sending them for special occasions."
Mim bites her lower lips, she doesn't know what to feel about this information.
"Why did P'View do this? It's such a waste and she's doing it for free."
To this day, the story of how they separated is still a secret kept in a sacred box.
-----
Mim and Bonnie are sitting in an ice cream shop after Mim says she needs fresh air.
Without asking Bonnie can tell Mim's bothered by the earlier conversation as she's zoning out while her ice cream is about to turn into flavoring water.
"Your ice cream is melting Mim."
..... Mim huffed, eating her ice cream but more like poking it with her spoon.
"Why did you give her my house address Bon?"
Bonnie almost chokes on her ice cream.
"It's not my fault, I didn't know you and P'View already... broke up then."
Mim accepts that.
"Do you still keep in contact with her?"
'lie Bonnie, you have to lie, you promised' Bonnie hears View's voice nagging her.
"Uh, no." She hopes Mim doesn't see sweat appearing on her forehead.
"No? Huh? I swear you guys are so close, even I thought you two were long-lost sisters." Mim laughed and Bonnie joined in, feeling less nervous.
"Yeah, I like her."
"I know, P'View is the only person I dated that you approved."
"Well, she's a good person."
"True." Mim sighs, clearly thinking about View.
"Did what happen between us.."
"We just fall out of contact, that's normal." Bonnie tries to keep her answer short and avoid Mim's eyes.
Luckily for her Mim's in her own world.
"She has been sending sweet treats to my house for five years, why? That's so odd, what did she want from this?"
"I'm taking a wild guess that maybe P'View wants to make it up to you?"
"What're you saying Bon?"
"Don't you notice how the desserts are all your favorite Mim?"
Mim eyebrows scrunch together.
"That's not wild but a crazy assumption."
Bonnie holds up her hands.
"I'm not hinting at anything Mim besides I still don't know why you guys broke up."
"P'View don't tell you?"
"No." Even how many times Bonnie annoyed her for it.
"Now can you tell your amazing best friend the story pretty, please?" Bonnie charms Mim with her gummy smile and shiny eyes.
Mim smiled back, leaning across the table.
"It's a story for another time Bon Bon." She stands up and walks outside.
- Days later, Bonnie helps Mim gather the papers she needs along with Mimetta's upcoming projects and contracts. Even though her dad says to take her time, no need to rush but Mim wants the CEO transition to go smoothly, knowing the company's board will not let her have it easy.
That day when Mim stepped down from the car in a silky black blazer with matching dress pants, her light brown hair bounced lightly by the wind.
The young CEO gave off professional, confident, ready to dominate as she eyed the building.
"Looking good, boss." Bonnie pulls away Mim's sunglasses straight into her pocket.
"Tsk, tsk, tsk rookie mistake. Ohh, high heels? Nice touch."
Mim squinted her eyes.
"It's because my eyes are sensitive."
"Did my smile blind you Mim?" Bonnie smirk.
"Hmm, should I ask my dad for another assistant?"
"That's unfair, I still won this round."
"Jokes aside. The whole company is waiting for you inside."
Mim nods while taking in deep breaths to slow down her heartbeat.
With powerful strides, Mim headed toward the company, Bonnie trailing behind her.
The welcome was smoother than anyone imagined and felt truly heartwarming. Employees were clearly impressed by their new CEO, a few couldn't help but stare, starstruck and wide-eyed.
Then, inside Mim's office on the highest floor.
"Today went well." She takes off her blazer and drapes it over her chair.
"Yes, if you also count half the population of this building thirsting over you." Bonnie clink their champagne glasses.
"It was nice seeing you being overprotective towards me again Bon." Mim winked, drinking her champagne.
"The director of the marketing department doesn't work today?"
Bonnie's heart stops.
"She's sick and currently working from home right now."
"What a shame, I want to meet her. The marketing team accomplished the most these past years."
"Yeah..." Bonnie's nervous laugh quickly dries down. She hopes Mim would drop the topic.
"Right, enough drinking Bon, we have lots of work to do." Mim sits in the chair that was always meant for her.
Bonnie breathed out in relief, leaving the room.
------
One week later.
"P'View, where are you?"
"You're supposed to be here. It's over a week." Bonnie's almost yelling into her phone.
"I can't, Bonnie, give me another week." View sounds too calm to Bonnie's liking.
"You're kidding, P'View, you "can't" What?"
"I can't face her."
Bonnie closed her eyes in frustration. She had enough of this excuse.
"It's five years P', and you're 27. Stop being a coward."
"Don't scold me!"
"I have her picture, I can send them to you if you want?"
"What? Why would I want them?"
"Haizz P'View, you got your department to lead here. They need you."
"I can still support them at home." View fight back.
"Urgh, the thing is, you can't avoid your own CEO P'View, the one that you needed to report to." Bonnie feels helpless, she's out of words to reason with View.
"Another week working from home yes or no Bonnie?"
"Fine, have at it P'View, but that's final."
"You're only making it worse for yourself."
Bonnie hangs up in anger.
"Who wronged you, Bon?" Seeing Mim's smile eased Bonnie a bit.
"The restaurant I wanted to book a reservation at informed me that they were fully booked." It was half the truth.
"Oh, reservation for someone special Bon Bon? Am I out of your list?"
"You got jokes aren't you." Bonnie rolled her eyes.
"Don't worry, I can help you reserve a table at one of the finest restaurants."
"Tonight, right?" Mim begins to type on her phone.
Bonnie eagerly nods, at least her plans are not ruined.
"Done, have fun on the date!"
Before leaving, Mim turns back to ask.
"The director.."
"She's still sick and needs to work from home for another week."
"Really? That's concerning. I should send her a gift basket or something."
_____
By the end of week two, Mim had quickly settled and caught on with the company's momentum. She had been feeling restless, but not tonight, she felt at ease as she allowed Bonnie to leave work early.
Reaching for the files on her table, it was there on her first day, but she was too busy to pick it up.
In it was the names and positions of her employees, Mim skips through a lot because she only needs to remember the important people.
When she read down to the marketing department director's name, the files fell out of her hands onto the table.
Marketing Director: View Benyapa
Mim's in disbelief, she may need to wear glasses. She keeps rereading it again and again, yet no matter how many times she looks, the name hasn't changed one bit.
Is this a joke Bonnie tried to pull on her? Mim slumped back into her chair, totally in shock at her discover.
Bonnie will have a lot of explaining to do tomorrow, a raging storm is heading her way.
