Chapter 6

Dean

I drove the impala down the road while Benny sat next to me. Darkness had set in while Brooke tried to get some sleep in the backseat. I knew she hadn't been sleeping good, so any way she could sleep was good enough for me.

Talking quiet enough for just Benny to hear me, I asked, "Yeah, so, if you were your maker's favorite, why did he kill you?"

"When you get turned, it's like you're reborn into a vampire nest. Your maker, he means everything to you." Benny reached into the cooler next to us, pulling out a blood bag as he talked. "I mean, you really start believing he's God. Now, if your maker happens to believe the same thing, well..." He started but trailed off.

My eyes looked over to find him drinking from the blood bag, making me shift uncomfortable. I tried to ignore it though, focusing on the road as I said, "See how that could be a pickle."

"Anyway, our father was a jealous god. He kept the family together but kept us apart from the rest of the world, always at sea. I always did what was best for the nest, till I met her. Andrea. Andrea Kormos. Beautiful. I mean, words don't even cut it, you know? Greek, heiress."

"Come on," I smiled, not believing that Benny could talk about a girl like that.

Benny nodded, smiling slightly as he said, "She was sailing a 42-foot sloop to the Canary Islands. Now, I should have called her boat's destination in to my crew, but instead, I joined her on it."

I smiled, "Seriously? Was Fabio on the cover of that paperback?" I joked with a laugh.

He ignored my comment, "My life changed when she entered it, Dean. Everything I had been or done up to that point just seemed to vanish into what we had become together. I mean we found it, man. Kinda like you and Brooke."

My face formed a confused look, "What the hell is that supposed to mean?"

Benny looked over at me, laughing, "Oh come on now, Dean. You may be able to fool that brother of yours, but you ain't fooling me. I saw how you were in Purgatory with her. Protecting her like she was already yours."

I looked into the rearview mirror at Brooke who was still sound to sleep in the backseat.

"Still are," Benny smirked as he looked ahead at the road. "Anyway, eventually, we settled in Louisiana. And then one night, we were coming home, and the old man was just there. Quentin, Sorento, my oldest nestmates. It was only that night I understood what a crime it was to him; me leaving him. They pinned me down, and they beheaded me. The last thing I saw was the old man tearing out Andrea's throat."

Jesus, that's harsh.

"Well, that's what payback's all about, am I right?" I asked, not expecting an answer.

Benny nodded, "Docks are up ahead. Should be able to find a dinghy to use."

I reached my hand back, lightly bumping Brooke's arm which stirred her awake, "Hey. We're almost there."

Brooke sat up, letting a yawn leave her lips as she rubbed her eyes. "Man, I don't remember sleeping that good before," She said, slipping her jacket back on.

Brooklyn

Dean, Benny, and I found a small motor boat. We climbed on board, riding out into the water for about 15 minutes before shore came into view. Dean sat on the bow with a rope, preparing to jump off while Benny drove and I looked around.

Jumping off and securing the boat to the shore, Dean reached out and helped me out while I headed up the small hill. Benny threw Dean two bags who threw them to me, watching my back as I carried them up the hill.

Woods surrounded us as we walked.

"We're close," Benny said as Dean and him carried their bags. Looking back at Dean and me, Benny asked with a smile, 'Remind you of anything?"

Sadly, yes. Dark woods, weapons at the ready, tension high. It reminds me to much like Purgatory.

Dean reached into the bag, pulling out his Purgatory knife before handing me mine. Benny followed and did the same before laying his bag next to Dean's which sat in front of a tree.

We started our walk again, Benny seeming to speak his mind again, "It's weird being back in the world. Isn't it?" Dean nodded, keeping an eye out, "Sure as hell is."

Benny look around as well, seeming to not be able to shake a certain feeling off, so he talked again. "I mean, what do you do with it all? All the, all the everything? Hell, I don't even know if this world is real, if I'm real."

I knew Benny wasn't full on board with things yet. He spent 50 years in Purgatory, there is a lot to catch up on. But I never would have thought he'd start second guessing this world to the point he wouldn't know if it was real or a mess in the head.

"Hey, listen to me," Dean said which made both Benny and I stop. "I've seen what happens down that rabbit hole, okay? We're real. Benny, this is real. It's the only way to play this game, you get me?"

Benny nodded before starting to lead the way again.

I watched as Dean watched Benny before catching my eyes. He motioned with his head, "Come on."

The three of us headed inside of a large, white house. We made our way through the entry hallway before walking into the giant main room, a staircase to the left of us. Our weapons were ready for anyone and anything. That was until Benny got side track with the piano.

"Time to move, Benny," I whispered, my eyes watching the upstairs.

"The old man's harpsichord," Benny said as his hand traced over the keys. "Benny!" Dean said a bit louder, watching as he moved away from the harpsichord.

Dean and I moved away, hoping Benny would follow us. The house was more of a mansion, clearly showing that they stole prize objects or gotten rich off of the people they killed.

"Man, I'm starting to wish I was a vampire," I jokingly said, turning to expect to see Benny crack a smirk. But he wasn't there.

My arm reached in front of me, lightly pulling on Dean's jacket which grabbed his attention. When he turned and saw that Benny wasn't behind us, he didn't need to ask any questions.

We started to back track, my feet about to turn the corner into the mail entrance area only for Dean to grab my arm and pull me back. I slowly peaked around the corner, spotting Benny looking at this beautiful girl, "Andrea."

A few men walk out, one behind him while two other ones stand on either side of him. He barley even notices, his attention on the lady before him. That was, until the man behind him knocked him to the ground. I pull my head back as the sound of Benny's groans and feet knocking into his body are heard.

"Idiot," Dean mumbled, his hand still on my arm as I closed my eyes and let out a sigh.

"Come on," Dean motioned for me to follow him, letting go of my arm as we headed back to where we were. A half lit hallway sat before us, clearly untouched by vampires at the moment.

As Dean and I walked down the hallway, his phone started to buzz in his pocket, causing him to stop and pull it out.

"Bet money that it's Sam," I said to him, my hand still clutching the large knife like weapon in my hands.

All I needed was the glare sent by Dean to tell me that I was right. He pushed Decline before shoving the phone back into his pocket. "Little bust right now, Sammy," He mumbled.

"You should have told him where we were going. He already has doubts about me and you're not exactly helping with pulling me along," I said, making Dean look over at me. "Would you rather of stayed back?"

I scuffed and shook my head, "No way. Someone has to protect your ass. And Benny's failing right now."

My feet were only able to take two steps before my eyes caught sight of a shadow about to turn into our hallway. I grabbed Dean's jacket, yanking him into a room next to us. He started to question what I was doing so I quick covered his mouth with my hand.

His eyes showed me the confused look he had. I nodded towards the door, making him pull away from my hand and glance out the door, watching as a vampire walked by the room and into a different hallway.

"See, saving your ass," I said, making Dean glare at me.

We headed back into the hallway, Dean's phone buzzing again. He pulled it out, letting out a sigh which told me that it was Sam again. "Just answer it, before he starts tracking your phone," I said, my eyes glancing into another room to find it empty.

To my surprise, Dean answered the phone, putting it on speaker for me to hear as well.

"Hey," Sam said, surprised that Dean answered his phone. "Okay, what?" Dean asked a little snappy.

Sam's voice sounded confused, "What?" He asked, clearly not understanding the snappy attitude coming from his older brother. "Why did you call me?" Dean asked, whispering so his voice wouldn't draw attention to any coming vampires while I watched his back.

"Why are you whispering?" Sam asked, clearly unaware of the situation we were in.

My arm nudged Dean, nodding to the phone and mouthing to him "Tell him". Dean let out a sigh before saying in a calmer voice "It's kind of hard to explain right now, but Brooke and I are sort of in the middle of cleaning out a vampire's nest, and it's sort of gone a little sideways on us."

Sort of? This has completely jumped the ship plain.

"What!" Sam yelled, causing Dean to quickly push the phone into his chest as he rolled his eyes. When he drew it away, Sam was saying, "Are you an idiot, Dean? You know better than to go into a vamp nest alone."

My eyes fell slightly as I tried to focus on something else besides their conversation. "I'm not alone, damn it. All right? I'm not alone. I've got Brooke and even a backup guy," Dean paused for only a second, "Who's been tracking the nest for a while."

"What guy?" Sam asked, getting angry again. "You don't know him. He's a friend."

"I get that Brooke and you went through a lot together in Purgatory, but this isn't a you and Brooke thing, this is a hunt. And we need to find that line –" Sam started but I quickly snatched the phone from Dean.

"Listen, I'm sorry if you think I replaced you or whatever. But I am not nothing. I am a Hunter, a good Hunter. And if you would open your eyes and realize that, you'd see that I've been doing nothing but helping you. Like I'm about to do right now," I said and started to text Sam. "I'm sending you our location right now."

There was a small pause as I handed Dean his phone back and turned around to come face to face with a vampire.

"Shit," Dean cursed behind me as the vampire grabbed me and pined me up against the wall. The only thing keeping this vampire's teeth away from me was my Purgatory knife.

Suddenly, the vampire stopped stretching towards me, his head rolling off of his body and onto the floor. Dean stood behind the dropping body, looking at me for a second until I gave him a reassured nod. He turned and picked up his phone, seeing the shattered screen and sighed, "Oh, man, come on."

Dean shoved his phone into his pocket before grabbing the dead vampire's feet. "Listen-" Dean started but stopped when he noticed another vampire at the end of the hall.

I stayed against the wall, waiting until I heard the footsteps get closer and watched Dean's face. He must have known what I was planning because he stayed still and nodded slightly. I quickly swung the Purgatory knife, hitting the vampire's neck and cutting it clean off.

"Nice," Dean said with a smiling nod.

Dean grabbed one body while I grabbed the other one, yanking them into a different room. As we started to drag the bodies, my eyes caught a glimpse of two vampires stopping and glancing down the hallway.

"How many?" Dean whispered to me. "Two," I whispered back, watching as Dean let go of his body and stood against the wall with his knife in his hands. I dropped mine, standing on the other wall and waiting while my hands gripped the knife.

As soon as the two vampires made their way into the room, Dean and I swung our large knives. The heads rolled to the ground, killing the vampires before they even knew what hit them.

I smiled victoriously before looking up to Dean who had the same look.

After dragging the rest of the bodies into a room, we found ourselves walking through the house again. We were lucky to not have come across anymore surprise vampires, but found ourselves in the main entrance again.

Benny stood there, facing his lost girlfriend, Andrea. It seemed that he was able to kill his maker, ready to leave. But not with her.

"What I loved – it ain't here anymore. It was snuffed out a long time ago by monsters like me, like what you've become."

"You think you're better than me now?" Andrea asked, shocked and a bit angry with Benny's choice of words.

Benny glanced over at Dean and me, his eyes quickly focusing back in Andrea as he said, "No. I think we're all damned." Dean must have gotten the hidden message, because he stepped forward and cut Andrea's head clean off.

I took a few steps forward, standing in front of Benny and next to Dean as we all looked down at the dead body.

We were able to take care of most of the bodies before we headed back to the boat. I went to grab the bags while Dean and Benny got the boat ready to launch. As I started to circle back, I noticed Benny looking distant while Dean looked at him worriedly.

In hopes of brightening up the moment, I walked up behind the two boys, throwing the bags into the boat as I said. "Alright boys. Let's head out before I have to save both of your asses."

Benny smirked at my comment as I climbed on board. Dean and he pushed the boat out, jumping on board as well before we headed off. The ride was silent, but when the dock came into view and Sam's body was seen, I knew it would start something.

I only hopped it would hold off for a bit longer.

Dean threw the rope to Sam while I grabbed my bag. Dean threw Benny and his bag onto the dock as Sam tied it off, watching as we climbed out. He looked past Dean and I, at Benny, confusion on his face.

"I'm Benny. Heard a lot about you, Sam," Benny said and held out his hand. Sam looked at it for a minute before taking his hand. Immediately his expression changed, his eyes moving over and looking at Dean with a shocked expression.

My eyes watched as his free hand started to undo his knife holster on his side. His hand gripped the knife while my eyes looked between the three men. Benny was watching Sam as well while Dean shook his head at him.

Sam's grip loosened to the point that he dropped his hand by his side. Benny, taking that as a settle moment, let go of Sam's hand. "I can see you three have a lot to talk about." He patted Dean's arm before giving me a small hug.

"Bye Brooke," Benny said as he pulled away. "Take care of yourself, Benny," I said, watching as he grabbed his bag and walked away from us. When my eyes focused back on Sam, I watched as he looked between us with a pissed off look.

Well, my hope just ran dry.

Dean let out a sigh, "Sam, I know how this looks."

"No, Dean. I don't think you do. He's a vampire!" Sam half yelled, causing me to just keep my mouth shut.

"He's also the reason Brooke and I are topside and not roasting on a spit in Purgatory. Anything else?" Dean explained, pulling me into another argument of his and his brother's.

Sam shook his head, "Don't pretend I don't get it. I know you had to do what you had to down there."

"I highly doubt you get anything about Purgatory," Dean said, nodding with an annoyed expression. He was getting tired of this back and forth, and always coming back to Sam thinking he knew what it was like in Purgatory. But he didn't, and Dean wasn't willing to give up any information on what it was like.

Sighing, Sam said, "But Brooke and you are out now, and Benny's still breathing. Why?"

"He's our friend, Sam," Dean said plainly. This made his brother scuff in disbelief, "You think Benny's different? Don't you? He tell you he's not drinking live blood, or something?" He said nothing and neither sis I. "And you believe him. Wow. Okay," Sam shook his head.

Dean looked at his brother with a studying look, only saying, "Yeah. I got a vampire buddy, and you turn your phone off for a year."

Sam shook his head, pointing to Dean, "Don't turn this on me."

Looking away from Sam and at the water for a minute, he looked back at his younger brother. "Look, Benny slips up and some other hunter turns his lights out, so be it."

Nodding, Sam said with a straight face, "But it's not gonna be you, right?"

"Okay, we had our talk, now-" I started but was stopped by Sam's voice. "Own up to your crap, Dean. I told you from the jump where I was coming from, why I didn't look for you. But you? You had secrets. You had Benny and Brooke. And you got on your high and mighty, and you've been kicking me ever since you got back.

"Shut up!" I yelled, causing both boys to stop and look at me. "You both are fighting worst then a married couple."

I turned and looked at Sam, "Your right, we should have told you about Benny. But we didn't, we couldn't. Yes, Dean and I have secrets when it comes to Purgatory, but who doesn't when they get out of something like that. We don't want to remember, Sam. So get over it and except it!"

My head turned and looked at Dean who was watching me with a dropped mouth. "And you. Dean, I know how upset you are about Sam dropping the Hunter keys and moving on. But he had every right to. He decided not to look for you which, at the end of the day, was probable a good thing because there was no way he'd know where you were."

I looked between Sam and Dean, "You two are brothers. Family. And I know how much that means to both of you. So shut up, get over it, and move on."

Dean and Sam glanced at each other, clearly both surprised to hear me stand up to them both and speak my mind. This was it, this was what was going to kick me out of their Family Business and back into Hell. All because I had to open up my big mouth.

"Alright, you're right," Dean said with a small nod, still looking at me with shocked eyes.

I took a step back, looking at then as equally shocked but for a different reason, "Wait. That worked?" Sam smiled slightly before nodding, "Yeah, your right. All we've been doing is fighting."

"Sorry you had to be sucked into that," Dean apologies, who you could tell almost never apologists'.

With that, both boys turned and headed for the Impala. I stood there for a moment, still a bit shocked before smiling slightly. I stood up to the Winchesters, and won.

I grabbed my bag and hurried to follow them, throwing my bag into the trunk with Dean's before sliding into the backseat. "So, where to next?" I asked, ready to start up a new hunt which seemed to make Dean smile. He started up the car, switched on the radio before looking in the rearview mirror at me, "Just kick back, relax, and wait."

A groan left my lips as I threw my head back, causing a chuckle to escape from both boys lips as we drove off.
