Chapter 8: 𝐵𝓁𝒶𝓂𝒾𝓃𝑔...(ó﹏ò。)
Sad two time 😞💔
Two Time walked ahead of the others with a steady gait, boots pressing into the dust and ash of the ruined road. The wind whispered low, cold against their cheek, stirring their coat around their legs like a shadow that refused to fall behind. Eliot was mumbling to Noob about supplies. Shedletsky chewed noisily on the last of a turkey leg he'd conjured out of nowhere. And still, no one looked at them too closely. No one noticed the silence wrapping around Two Time like a funeral shroud.
To them, Two Time looked the same—resolute, maybe a little distant, but unshaken. They always looked like that. That was the mask. That was the only way they knew how to survive.
But inside, they were breaking apart.
Their thoughts clawed at the inside of their skull. The image wouldn't leave. Azure—his face, his voice, that cruel twist of his mouth, the way his eyes sliced through them like razors. It haunted them. Over and over again.
"You look pathetic."
They winced. Just slightly. A twitch at the corner of their eye. They'd trained their body not to show weakness, but that one moment—the words coming from him, their Azure—it had struck like lightning.
They told themselves it wasn't him. That something was wrong. That he was possessed, changed, manipulated—something. Anything. Because the alternative was too brutal to name.
That maybe... maybe he meant it.
Two Time didn't want to believe that. Couldn't. Not after everything. Not after how long they waited, how many nights they'd kept their eyes open in the dark, whispering his name under breath, willing the universe to give him back.
And they had found him.
Alive.
Breathing.
But twisted into something cruel.
They hadn't run. No. That would've been too easy. But they'd stepped back. Hesitated. Let Eliot touch their shoulder, let Noob say, "We should go." And they'd listened. Like a coward. Like a traitor.
They had walked away.
That was what gutted them the most.
Not what Azure had said. Not even the venom in his eyes. But the fact that Two Time had looked into the storm and turned their back.
Because for all their strength, all their wit and sharpness and fire—they were afraid.
Afraid that if they stayed, they would shatter.
Afraid that if they reached for him and he flinched, it would destroy them.
They didn't speak as they moved with the others down the cracked road, the wreckage of battle behind them and the uncertain path ahead. Eliot kept glancing at them. Noob fidgeted with the straps on his gear. Shedletsky hummed a tune off-key.
Two Time kept walking.
Inside, the guilt was thick and choking. They felt it in their throat, in their lungs, in the way their heartbeat stuttered under their ribs like something trying to escape. They didn't cry. They wouldn't. But the pressure behind their eyes made it hard to see straight.
"I left him," they thought, not for the first time. "I saw him, I heard him, and I left."
They had justified it in their mind. Told themselves they were keeping the others safe. That Azure needed time. That this wasn't the right moment.
But all of it was just a lie to keep from drowning in the shame.
Because it didn't matter what he said. Didn't matter how cold his eyes were. Didn't matter if he spat every cruel word in the world—he was back.
Azure was back.
And they hadn't held him.
They wanted to scream.
They wanted to rip the sky open and demand an answer. Why bring him back only to twist him into something that hated them? Why let them dream, and hope, and suffer—only for this? What god had looked at their love and decided it wasn't enough?
Their hand twitched at their side. They pressed it into their coat pocket, gripping the inside so tight their knuckles turned white.
Maybe it really was their fault.
They hadn't been fast enough. Hadn't believed hard enough. Hadn't fought hard enough. Maybe if they'd just been there when it mattered, he wouldn't have needed to change. Maybe if they'd held on tighter, the world wouldn't have been able to tear him apart.
They remembered how it felt—those final moments before everything went wrong. The battlefield, the chaos, the silence afterward. The way Eliot had looked at them. The way Noob had avoided their gaze. The way Shedletsky, for once, hadn't said a word. And above all of it, the sound of Azure's voice, poisoned and perfect.
"Don't you have anything to say, Two Time? Or are you waiting for forgiveness that will never come?"
They flinched again, and this time, Eliot saw it.
"Hey," Eliot said gently, but Two Time didn't stop walking. Didn't answer.
They couldn't.
They'd spent so long building this version of themselves—unshakable, clever, collected. If they stopped now, even for a second, they'd fall apart.
So they kept moving.
But the memories wouldn't stop. Azure's expression, so familiar and so wrong. The flicker of something beneath it—hesitation, maybe. Regret. Pain. They'd seen it. For a second, they'd seen it.
That was what kept them from collapsing completely.
That flicker.
He was still in there. Somewhere.
They had to believe that.
Because if he wasn't... if he was truly gone...
No.
They couldn't afford to think that.
They wouldn't survive it.
They remembered the stabbing. The knife that had sunk into Azure's side, a cruel twist of metal in the chaos of their final confrontation. It had been an accident. A mistake. Panic. Fear. They hadn't meant to hurt him. They hadn't meant to do it. But the fear had made them act, and it had cost them everything.
The image was still fresh: Azure's face contorted in pain as the blade sank into his flesh. His eyes wide with shock, disbelief. The words that escaped his lips, thin and shaky: "Why?"
They had frozen. Couldn't move. Couldn't breathe. They could still feel the cold steel in their hand, the weight of it, the betrayal in every inch of his body as he slumped to the ground, a silent scream in his gaze. He hadn't fought back. Hadn't screamed. Hadn't even tried to stop them.
He just looked at them, with those eyes, filled with something that wasn't anger, but something far worse.
Disappointment. Pain.
"I never meant it," they whispered now, their voice breaking. "I thought I was saving you. I thought I was saving us all..."
The knife wound had been deep. Azure had fallen. And Two Time hadn't stopped. They had just stood there, staring at the mess they had made. They hadn't fought for him. They hadn't tried to undo the damage.
"I left him," they thought again. "And then I... I hurt him."
The guilt swirled inside them, tighter, darker. That moment haunted them. Every breath, every step forward was a reminder of the devastation they had caused.
Two Time's breath caught in their throat.
"I should've never picked up that knife," they thought bitterly, the words tasting like ash. "I should've never let it go that far."
But it was done now. And the memory would never fade.
The rest of the world went on. No one noticed. No one cared. But Two Time carried that pain, that memory, with them like a scar they could never heal.
And as they kept walking, they whispered the truth they couldn't say aloud:
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I never meant to leave you. I didn't know how to stay."
But the wind carried the words away before they reached anyone. And Two Time didn't look back.
Because if they did... they might run straight into the fire.
And they weren't sure they'd survive it twice.
