SBAWP | Chapter 33

Two in a day!!!

Can you guys help me brainstorm titles for Book 2 and 3 of Sold to a Wolf Pack? I want to keep the words "Wolf Pack" in there. So far, my best ones are: Saved by a Wolf Pack and Stolen from a Wolf Pack. What do you think?  What titles would you suggest?

Logan

Jasper and I sit for a while, silently watching our mates. I don't have much of an appetite, so I just push my food around on my plate and then set my unfinished breakfast on the floor next to the bed. With my hands free, I move my chair closer to Saf's bed and play with a strand of her hair until my eyelids start to droop.

I fall asleep again, and wake up when two sets of footsteps enter the infirmary. When I see Doctor Dev, followed closely by Father, I jump to my feet. "Is everything okay?" I ask.

"Oh, yes," Doctor Dev smiles. "Saffron and Zara are recovering nicely."

"The Rogues?" I ask. "Did you catch the other Rogues?"

"Not yet," Father shakes his heads. "The Trackers think the Rogues used a nearby river to mask their scents."

"And the prisoners?"

"It's the oddest thing." Doctor Dev shakes her head. "None of them shifted, but they're all healing nicely. We can expect them to wake up in the next couple of days."

"Couple of days?" I frown. "What about Jess?"

"I've sent out more trackers," Father frowns, "but I don't have a good feeling about this. We need to talk with Nisha and Joshua next, see if they can tell us anything we don't know."

"We? You mean you want me to...? No, I can't leave Saf's side." I shake my head vehemently and sit back down in my chair.

"We won't be far, and Doctor Dev already okayed it."

"But..." I start to protest, but Doctor Dev interrupts.

"Saffron is recovering nicely, Logan. Her injuries have mostly healed, and I wouldn't be surprised if she was up and about in an hour or two."

"Really?" I grin.

"What about Zara?" Jasper cuts in, worry lacing his voice.

"Zara too, Jasper. I actually expected her to wake up sooner than this."

"Then why didn't see?" Jasper sounds worried.

"I'm sure she will any minute now," Doctor Dev smiles. "Her vitals are strong and her injuries have all healed. There's no reason for her not to."

The two of us share a relieved look, and Jasper relaxes back in his chair.

"Come, Logan." Father gestures for me to follow. When I hesitate, he adds, "We're only going next door. Doctor Dev will give you a shout if anything changes, right doctor?"

"Of course."

I hesitate. I don't want to leave Saf's side. When she wakes up, I want her to look up and see that I'm right there next to her. If she's not up for the next few hours though, it shouldn't matter if I step out briefly. Father's not great with the little kids, and I want to see if Joshie and Nisha know anything that might help us track down those rogues.

"Alright," I nod. I kind of need to go to the bathroom anyway, and a few minutes talking to the kids won't hurt. Plus, Doctor Dev and Jasper will be right here the whole time, and I'll be right next door. If Saf wakes up, I can get here in less than ten seconds, and if anything happens, I'd be able to hear the alarm.

I follow Father out of the room, take a detour to the bathroom two doors down, and then follow him to the bedroom where Doctor Dev has Nisha and Joshie. I hear giggles coming from inside, but when we reach the door, the kids suddenly go all quiet.

When Father opens the door, Nisha is tucked underneath a bunch of blankets in the bed to our left. Joshie is in the other bed, his covers folded back from his leg, which is propped up in a cast. Both kids look like their sleeping, but their eyes are squeezed way too tight, so it's obvious they're faking.

Father doesn't say anything as he steps inside the room. He grabs a chair and sets it between the kids, while I choose to lean against the door frame.

"Hello Nisha, Joshua," Father says loudly.

Both kids pretend to wake up. Nisha does a very exaggerated stretch, followed by a very fake yawn, and Joshie tries to act startled and asks, "what time is it?"

"Good morning." Father smiles indulgently.

"Good morning, Alpha," the kids chorus, looking guilty.

"Good morning, Alpha," Nicki adds, peeking out from behind Joshie's bed.

"You shouldn't be in here, Nicole," Father scolds, but I can see he isn't really mad.

"Sorry, Alpha," Nicki whispers, looking down at the floor, "but no one will let me see Zara."

"I notified your parents as soon as I could, Nicole. They're already on the road, and you can see Zara together as soon as they get here."

"Okay," Nicki nods. "Is she going to be okay, Alpha?"

"Zara's strong," Father says. "Really strong." She grins, staring at him admiringly. "She's the Pack Beta."

"That's right." Father nods. "Now how's everybody feeling?"

"My leg's broken," Joshie announces. You'd think the kid would be upset, but he's grinning from ear to ear. "I have a cast, see? Nicki got me a marker, and she signed it right here." He points at the large red heart with Nicki's name printed inside.

"I want to sign it too," Nisha pouts, "but Doctor Dev won't let me get out of bed. It's not fair. Nicki got to sign it!"

"Nicki didn't fight off a bunch of rogues and get a concussion." Father smiles at Nisha indulgently.

"I had to get help." Nicki pouts and her lower lip trembles.

Father immediately realizes his mistake and his eyes widen. He looks like a deer in headlights and I picture the gears in his head spinning as he scrambles to find a way out of this mess. Usually, Mother's the one who spends time with the pack kids—come to think of it, I'm surprised he asked me to come with him, and not her. He looks at me now, pleading for help, and I take pity on him.

"You did a really good job, Nick," I tell her, stepping into the room and ruffling her hair before carefully sitting down at the edge of Joshie's bed. "If it wasn't for you, we wouldn't have gotten there in time."

"Really?" Nicki stares at me, wide-eyed.

"Of course," Father takes over. "You were very brave and did a great job. So did you, Nisha."

"Thanks, Alpha," they both chorus.

"I helped," Joshie chimes in, and I almost laugh when Father gets that dear in headlights look again.

"He did," Nisha nods. "He fought the rogues."

"You shifted?" Father asks in surprise. All of us first shifted on a full moon, with adults around us to help with the transition. Shifting for the first time in a Rogue battle... I can't even imagine.

"I didn't shift." Joshie shakes his head, and his lip trembles. "I can't shift yet."

"But he killed the Rogue with a rock," Nicki announces.

"You weren't there, Nicki," I reminds her, though it's really cute that she'd make up a story to make her friend feel better.

"But Joshie and Nisha told me," Nicki says in her most authoritative voice. "Joshie hit the rogue with a rock. Really, really hard."

"I did." Joshie nods. "Twice."

"He was the smallest Rogue," Nisha adds, "but he was still a lot bigger than us."

"He was," Joshie agrees.

"And he was really scary," Nicki chimes in.

"Yeah, he was." Joshie looks up at Father hopefully. I know he's looking for praise, but Father doesn't seem to notice. He just nods.

"Since you were so brave," I smile at Joshie, "do you want me to sign your cast?"

"Will you?" his eyes widen.

"Of course." Father looks at me gratefully. "We'll both sign it."

Joshie practically shoves the red marker in Father's hand, and he leans down and writes 'Get better soon' on the cast. He signs it 'Alpha,' and Joshie leans forward and runs his fingers over the thick block letters. Father hands me the pen next, and I write 'you were very brave,' and sign it with my own name.

"Can I go to the bathroom?" Nicki suddenly asks, raising her hand.

"Of course." Father nods.

I'm surprised that Nicki doesn't just go. It's not like we're at school. Then a thought hits me, and I stop her with a hand on the shoulder. "Just don't think about sneaking in to see Zara." I give her a pointed look. "Doctor Dev and Jasper are both watching her right now."

"Oh," Nicki's face falls, "never mind then."

"You'll see her soon, Nick, I promise," I tell her, closing the marker. "Doctor Dev thinks she'll be awake soon, and then it'll be okay to see her even if your parents aren't back yet."

"Really?" Nicki grins. She seems to forget her worries just like that, and leans over to see Joshie's cast.

"What does it say? What does it say?" Nisha practically bounces on her bed.

"I'll read it out for you if you sit still," I tell her, but then Joshie and Nicki start describing it all at once. They don't seem to make any sense as they talk over each other, but Nisha seems to understand because she squeals with excitement and talks right back over both of them.

"Alright," Father claps his hands when all their talking and squealing gets really loud and out of control. "Now, I need you three to tell me exactly what happened yesterday afternoon."
