Chapter 1. Their Eyes Meet
She, who has so much of ego has gone through what she thinks, is the most memorable struggle in her life.
It is bad. She has wondered and felt so frustrated about herself. Still feeling like leaving this world everyday as she suffers from an illness.
It is not exactly a critical symptom or disease... It is a kind of flu... Love Flu.
She has dignity and pride. That intelligence of hers could hardly bring her any person who can be her friend. Ham Eunjung was always alone.
The stylish bob hair embraces Eunjung's almost perfect V-line face. The eyes of concentration and sharp determination have never been gentle toward anyone. That powerful straightness of her nose creates a superfluously delicate feature above what we call... The Lips.
Eunjung's lips can be compared to those pink cherry blossoms falling down the riverbeds and the sun shining roads. They are soft and gentle, yet, they were never been touched once.
Others usually compare people's facial beauty to the sculptures, why is that so? Beauty is something different; it is considered the charm and specialness of an individual. That kind of beauty will be revealed someday, when that individual meets their fate and their forever destiny.
"Keep your chin up." One of Eunjung's favorite teachers has told her.
She will remember this everyday and everytime. Being strong is a way to survive in this hypocratic world. What she has faced turned her into a cold-hearted and independent young woman in her early twenties.
Now, she is feeling as if she has gone insane and she herself... is a bad influence of the world. Eunjung has always been tolerant toward everybody else. She does not judge how someone is, unless she gets to know that person very well. Never once thought that she can be in love, Eunjung closed up her heart and is always vigilant toward people.
She was lied to.
She was misunderstood.
She was being treated not as a person.
She was thrown away like an object.
She was being tested as a machine.
She was neglected.
She was forlorn.
Yet.
She is a girl.
She is lovable.
She is sweet.
She is beautiful.
She is strong.
She is talented.
She is a person.
Covered her true self in a world of darkness with misguided steps, Eunjung never thought that there would be light, there would be a ray passing through her condensed blindness.
Then came a person who replaced her sunlight, replaced her mountain, replaced her ocean, replaced her weather, replaced her shelter, and replaced her heart.
Is it because Eunjung has not felt the love from her family and her mother? Is it because she was too lonesome? Or is it because she was yearning for love?
She many times thought about why she can't be in love with men. Maybe they are too arrogant, too careless and too easy to be understood.
Eunjung criticized herself for being too offended to the opposite gender. However, she experienced the tragical harshness and the dramatic abuse that men brought to women. The society, the social network and the internet are the reality. They have the evidence of terrible treatments of one person to another, not just men to women but everyone to each other. Women and children happen to be most of the victims of mentally and physically abuse. She feels very fortunate that her father is a gentleman full of magnanimity and scrupulosity. Compares to him, her mother is not very veracious and usually is enthusiastic over money. However, if it wasn't for her mother, Eunjung cannot have the things that she is having. Eventhough she does not like money and property, Eunjung always appreciates her parents. Being the middle child of the family makes her become the oddest. Whatever she does, they will not appreciate it, instead, and they like to criticize.
Then her heart made a conclusion... She is going to protect the feminine and the helpless ones.
The truth is... Ham Eunjung was born this way. She is always attracted to the femininity, but not falling in love so easily.
It is not predictable that once again, Eunjung is wrong. Most women are helpless and are gentle, but not the girl right next to her door, in the apartment that she is living in.
Living alone does not require Eunjung to have an enormous mansion, which can have many rooms that are going to be left empty. Why is she living in an uncomfortable and crowded apartment building? Eunjung has the secrets to herself.
Not long ago, she met a strange person who happens to be her neighbor next to her room. At that time, Eunjung felt funny because of how that neighbor acted.
That morning, Eunjung wears a white flannel inside a suit very formally because she had to go to a meeting. After she gets out of her car, she takes off her coat, hangs it on her right arm as usual and goes upstairs.
Seeing a slender girl in a black tanktop bringing the huge boxes into the room, when that girl exhaustingly puts a box right infront of the door and stops, Eunjung comes over and asks her.
"Do you need help unpacking?"
"No, thanks." The girl answers coldly.
"Are you sure? There are still so many things..." Eunjung's eyes wonderously checking the heavy objects.
"Why? Do you underestimate me?"
At this time, after asking the wide-shoulder person in front of her a question, the girl continues to stand up. She tries to pick the huge box up and starts to move.
Suddenly, the box slips out of her arms as the girl loses her balance. Because of equal and opposite reaction, the weight and the force of the box push her outward. Now she jerks back and trips out of the door.
Reacting extremely fast, Eunjung lets out her powerfully strong arms and drops her coat. She catches the girl right before she falls down on the ground. Eunjung turns and rolls the girl into her chest, creating an absolute embrace.
In Eunjung's arms, the girl senses a fragrance. This fragrance is not common because when she smells it, she feels like being in the deep and blue ocean but can also breathe. Is this some kind of perfume? So warm but so cool at the same time. It makes her feel so relaxed and at ease, which is a feeling that she hasn't felt for a long time.
Their eyes meet. There are many beautiful people that Eunjung has met, but this person is breathtakingly gorgeous. She is fascinated, but Eunjung is not impressed by only the appearance. Quietly and meticulously, she watched the girl from the very little details. Even when the girl is worn out because she has put all of her strength into the bagages and packages, she is still so gorgeous with the smoothly glowing skin.
Her lips are lively red. They press against each other when the girl uses her strength, and they're also small like the secretive rose petals that have not bloom yet. The sharp eyes could kill anyone with only a glance because they are like the bullets going through their heart, making unforgettable scars.
The girl's eyebrows crouch as she frowns, maybe because she got startled. Her nose is so thinly pretty, it perfectly matches every feature on her face. Then those rose petals under her nose move, they bloom as she tries to speak.
"Can you let go of me now?"
"Oh. I'm sorry." Eunjung buttresses her back, helping her to stand up steadily.
What is there to be sorry? Eunjung was only helping her. Is she that powerful that she could make Eunjung feel strangely afraid? There is an uncertain and nostalgic feeling that is playing a song in Eunjung's heart.
"Let me help." Ham Eunjung suggests.
Does not wait for the girl to respond, Eunjung just starts to pick up the box by herself. Very lightly and easily, the box is brought into the room.
The girl watches as Eunjung stacks the box on top of the others by a corner of the room. She is irritated, yet, she appreaciates Eunjung's help.
Ham Eunjung continues to make stacks of boxes and packages. She finishes carrying them ten minutes after that.
"Let's go to my room for a drink. You seem to need to rest for a little bit." The girl is invited by the tall neighbor.
"That should be fine." She nods.
...
Eunjung's apartment is very transient and cool since all the windows are opened in every summer and autum. Now is the month of August, and in between of those two seasons, there are always going to be the silky breezes flowing through every grid of the window and the door frames.
Everything here is white, the wall, the door, the curtain, the window... Except for a few things, which are in the color of cream and coffee, are the couch, the small round and wooden table, the shelves, the cabinets, the floor... There is also a human-size bear with the colors of coffee, white, black and yellow sitting by the small classical piano in a corner.
"Do you like orange juice?" Eunjung politely asks.
"Yes. That is fine."
The glass of orange juice is carefully put on the wooden table infront of the couch. The girl sits in an hesitating position because she thinks the place is too clean and there is absolutely no dust.
"Relax. Make yourself feel comfortable, we are going to be neighbors anyways." Eunjung sits down next to her, holding a mug of ice tea.
"Thank you for helping me."
The girl's cold expression does not change after all. She picks up the glass and starts to gulp the juice. A few seconds later, the glass is empty and is back on the table.
Eunjung's smile line appears next to her smile. It's not a smirk, just her smile always been that way. Perhaps this girl is one of a kind, and is stood out more than anyone else.
"That is no problem. Do you want some more juice?"
"No, that is good enough. Thank you."
"Are you hungry though?"
"It's okay. I just ate before I got here."
"Alright. If you need help with anything else just tell me, I'm always here."
"Thanks. I think I should get back to my room now."
"Sure."
The girl quickly stands up, turning her back toward Eunjung. She starts to walk out of the door as Eunjung realizes something; she forgot to ask for her name.
"Wait. Can I ask for your name?"
Her footsteps stop banging on the floor but the girl does not turn around. Then she answers shortly.
"Jiyeon. Park Jiyeon."
"Jiyeon-ssi. I am Ham Eunjung."
Strangely, their eyes widen when both of them hear the names of each other.
"Why is her name so familiar?... Have we met before? I don't think so." They are having the same thoughts.
Eunjung shouldn't have asked Jiyeon for the name if she did not get to see her body from behind. Jiyeon's silhouette is so nostalgic that it makes her feelings fall deep down into the accelerating rhythm of the heart beats.
