Không Tên Phần 1

1/ Definition of Formal and Informal Letters

- A formal letter also know a business letter and it is writen in a formal language or the professional language with specific structure and layout

- Informal letter: is a pesonal letter and it can be used for written to friends, family members or acquaintance

2/ The structure    :

And there are some significant diffirence b/t F and I letters.

As I said about the definition of the two types of letters as above. "Informal" means something you write to your friend or your parent. So this is for people you know well. On the other hand, formal letter, we use with strangers, with our boss, in the workplace,...

- Informal letters use contraction. What's is contraction? Didn't, wouldn't, Haven't and so on. So if u see a verb with an apostrophe ' and then a /t/ That is contraction. It's very important to know bz in formal letters u don't use contraction. Didn't would be did not can't be can not.

- Another major difference between formal and informal letter is the use of idioms; the use of certain expressions. If I'm writing to my friend, maybe I'll say: "Oh, you know, I've been very under the weather lately." Meaning: I've been very sick. If I'm writing to my boss, I won't use idioms. If I'm writing a formal letter, I will not use idioms. Those aren't good to use in formal letters.

- Phrasal verbs, this is another thing we find in informal writing. What is a phrasal verb? It's a verb that has a preposition. Okay? So, for example: "find out", "find" is a verb, "out" is the preposition. "Go" is the verb, "up" is the preposition. So the... The preposition adds a different meaning to the verb. So, in informal letters we use Pharsal V, Whereas in formal letters, what do we use? We don't use pharsal V. We usually use longer words that mean the same thing. Ex: find out- discover- discover is more fomal. Go up, ex: prices have gone up. Prices have increased.

For more ex: say sorry-apologize, bring about- cause, Show- demonstrate

- Next: Imperative. Imperatives are sentence start with a verb ( don't talk to me! Do more excersises). If u are wrriting to your friend. U can use perative. "send it soon" maybe your friend has to mail you a package u write: send it soon! I want it, send it soon. In formal letters, we don't use imperative, they are too strong. We like to use more polite sentence: You may send it at your earliest convenience. Do u see how much longer the formal is than the informal? Formal letters usually a lot longer than informal letters. It's not simple sentences, It's long complex sentence. And you often see the words like: may, would, could instead of want, can. So this is one of the main differences.

- Next idea for what informal use:TV? What is Tv? It's abbriviation-it's a short form of a words. The full word is television. So what dose it means? Do not use abbriviation and exclamation in a formal letters.

- So what are some more ex? For informal, words like very,... These are thing u would never say in the workplace, but u may say with your friends. So is u se very,,,- informal letters. A formal letters don't use this words. We will write "strongly", "I strongly to advise u to buy this product" " I strongly agree"

- U see these words: but,.. this is a informal letters. We have some formal equipvalents: futhermore,...

- Another diff: with a informal letters, u can use: a lot. Lot of. I have a lot of friends.... In formal letters, the better way to use is much/ many:
