XXXVI

A few days had passed, and living in the dorms weren't as bad as I'd imagined. It seemed like living together allowed for us to grow closer as friends and classmates, and we always had the convenience of asking each other for help, if needed. Especially after the incident, if had felt like we were more comfortable around each other.

I was thinking about it while making my way to the dining hall, until I bumped into a couple of familiar faces.

"Sato-kun, Mineta, good morning," I chimed, waving at them. Both smiled and waved back, already dressed in their uniforms.

"I didn't know you two were such early risers," I teased, gesturing to the two boys. "Have something important to tend to?" Sato laughed a bit, scratching his cheek.

"Not really, I just want to get to the dining hall early," he admitted, a light pink blush dusting his face.

"I see. What about you, Mineta?" The purple haired boy shrugged looking up at me with a blank stare.

"I don't know, honestly. Some days I just wake up early, and I study in my room." I nodded my head, a little bit surprised at the usually pervy guy. His ranking in the class is pretty high, so I guess I shouldn't be shocked.

"So that's why you're such a good student."

"Or I look at the internet searching for hot babes." Ah, there he is.

"Well," I said, changing the topic. "We should probably hurry if we want to be early. The dining hall isn't going to fill itself."

"In order to become a hero, you must first take the provisional license exam and develop your ultimate move." I looked around, uncertain of what that meant. "There is a 50% passing rate, which is why you'll need one." I started to think while listening to Aizawa.

"The job of a hero is to save people from danger, like crimes, accidents, natural disasters, and man-made disasters. The exam to become one naturally looks at how well you are able to do that. Your ability to gather information, make decisions, move, and fight, in addition to your ability to communicate, draw people to you, and lead.

"Every year, a different test is used to look at how well you are able to do those things."

Midnight continued, branching off from his short monologue.

"Of those, your ability to fight is especially important to your future as heroes. Whether or not you have an ultimate move will greatly affect whether or not you pass."

"Not being influenced by circumstances and being able to act consistently will make you a great asset on the front lines," Cementoss added brightly.

"Your ultimate move doesn't necessarily need to be of an attacking type," Ectoplasm said, looking at all of us. "For example, Iida's Reciproburst. The temporary burst of speed is a threat enough to be called an ultimate move."

"Oh, so it's like a move that allows you to think 'I have the advantage?'" Sato questioned, looking at the teachers.

"Exactly!" Midnight replied, smiling.

"And even though the training camp was cancelled, the training you did to improve was part of the process in order to create your ultimate moves," Aizawa commented, hands stuffed in his pockets. "In other words, until the beginning or the next semester, for the next ten days or so until the end of summer vacation, you'll be working your ultimate moves until you develop them solidly. You'll be doing intensive training!

"In addition, you should think about how you can improve your costumes to work better in developing your strengths." Aizawa finally turned his gaze to a glare and looked at us.

"Get through this with a 'Plus Ultra' mentality. Are you ready?"

"Yeah!"

"What should I do?" I thought, walking to the course Cementoss had set up for us. I looked down, pulling out my staff and rustled my pockets for things that might be useful. I pulled out knives, throwing stars, small gas grenades, and a few pieces of lint. My main weapon was already a big help, but I honestly didn't see anything in my hand becoming useful.

"(L/N)! Why aren't you working?" I immediately looked up to see Ectoplasm looking at me.

"See," I sighed, stuffing the small items back into my pocket. "I honestly don't know what to do. I can't really work on my quirk, since I don't have one, but I could probably do something with my staff..."

"Well, you have to figure out something. Do some thinking, but make it fast." He left to go and spar with Ojiro, with me just standing there.

"There's gotta be something I can do. It doesn't have to be an attacking move either." I spun my staff around, trying to remember the things it could do.

"Magnetism, spearing, extension, doubling..." I muttered, trying out the functions. While I was busy with trying to think, I didn't notice All Might approach me.

"Young (L/N)!"

"Oh, All Might. I didn't realize you were here." I stopped, looking at him. "What's up?"

"Well, I have some advice for you." I nodded, cocking a eyebrow.

"Shoot away."

"Instead of trying to think of things to do with your staff, think of things that you are capable of and incorporate your staff into those moves. The properties of your weapon are quite impressive, and I think with a little bit of creativity, you might be able to discover something amazing." I smiled, the gears in my brain turning.

"Thank you, All Might." He grinned and sauntered off to the next student. What could I do? What was I capable of? Starting to spin my staff in circles, I threw the few pieces of lint up in the air and let them hit it. As they bounced off, my eyes widened. I had an idea.

Splitting my staff into two separate pieces, I extended both of them so they were just as long as my single staff was initially. Using one hand, I started to flip one half in a circle out in front of me, and for the other half that I held in my free hand, I pushed a button to activate a spear head at the end of it. As I picked up momentum, a small gust of wind began to form, pushing rocks of debris as they flew.

"Oh, I see you thought of something?" Ectoplasm said, curiously observing me. I nodded, slowly coming to a stop, beaming at him. "What do you call it?"

"VerA: Sword and Shield!"

"Is Mei Hatsume in the room?" I peered over the corner, sticking my head in the doorway. "Just asking, Mr. Power Loader." The pro hero turned to me, gesturing over to his left.

"She's right here, as always, kid," he chuckled, tinkering on a new project. "Brilliant, but she doesn't really know when to quit." I laughed along with him, peering cautiously at the pinkette.

"Hatsume-chan," I called, grabbing her attention. "What's up?" She looked at me and beamed, energetically running up to me.

"(L/N)-kun!" she squealed, hopping up and down. "I am so excited, your support items are done, and they are absolutely amazing!" She scampered to grab the tools and brought them to me. Looking at them, Hatsume started to strap one to my wrist.

"Okay, so this is basically an enhancer. What it does is help you absorb tension from your muscles. It's like a brace, or whatever you'd like to call it. Swinging your staff for long amounts of time can be strenuous, and this is helping to release tension and keep your muscles intact." She pulled out another one and placed it in my hands.

"These are rings you can wear for better grip on your staff. They're also magnetic, which means someone can't knock it out of your hand. You can't also let go of it until you deactivate the rings, but I think it's really helpful," she rambled, slipping the silver bands onto my fingers. "The only reason why I didn't install a grip onto your staff is because your hands might get sweaty and it'll slip, and the magnetic function is already built into your staff, and you need something to attach it to."

I smiled, admiring the new support items I'd obtained from her.

"Also, one more thing!" she gasped, rustling in her bag. I cocked an eyebrow.

"But I-"

"I know you only asked for the two items, but something was really bugging me!" She finally found it and pulled a pair of shoes out.

"I noticed how heavy your normal combat boots were, and I know they're for more impact if you kick someone or something, but I made you lightweight ones. You can also clip on your staff to the sides of these boots for convenience. The soles are fireproof and can be worn in almost any terrain without them wearing down!" I laughed in disbelief.

"Hatsume-san!" I gasped, gingerly taking them. "You really didn't have to!" She grinned, putting her hands on her hips.

"Don't worry about it! I had fun with them!" she replied, waving it off. I gushed my thanks and happily tried them on, getting out my staff.

"These items are so helpful, thank you!" I exclaimed, examining the functions and looking at how well it worked. "You're such a big help, can I repay you in any way-?"

"No, no, it's fine! You're flattering me too much anyways. All I can do is wish you good luck in your license exam. Hopefully you can achieve much more with my little babies!" I nodded, my eyes bright.

"Of course!"
