Not Unworthy

❝If you’re nice to people, they’ll be nice back… right?❞
"YOU USELESS PIECE of shit!" Your mother exclaimed loudly as she slapped your face. She was very upset with you because you broke a plate accidentally. You didn't mean to break it, it just slipped from your hands when you were washing it.
You tried to apologize to her, but she slapped your other cheek and started to scream at you, "Don't you dare talk back to me! I want this whole mess cleaned when I return! Unworthy brat." Your mother mumbled the last part to herself before leaving the kitchen, probably going out to get a drink at the local bar... like usual.
Your life wasn't really the best at all. Your mother was suffering from a big debt that was about 700,000,000 won because your dad used to gamble a lot. He escaped when you barely reached two years old to escape from the creditors, but even with his presence your parents weren't the greatest. Both of them were careless and violent, especially toward you. However, this didn't prevent you from being the kind kid you're now. You were polite and nice, always believing that there's good in this cruel world.
After your dad ran away, your mother had to handle the debt alone. She would always yell at you for no reason... even if you just didn't threw out the trash, she would yell at you and hit you. In addition, you weren't given the proper education you needed. You just barely learned how to read, write, and count. That was all you needed as your mother claimed. You wanted to do anything to help your mother to pay off her debt, but you just couldn't.
You were just ten and you weren't allowed a job, making it worse for you. You still respected your mother and knew that it wasn't in you to rebel on her. You couldn't also blame her because she was so stressed out, the money was way too much for one person to bear. You still loved her and hoped that she would love you back one day. You just wished you were a bit older to help her pay the money.
With a deep sigh, you crouched down and began to carefully pick the broken plate to not injure your hand.
Meanwhile, your mother was walking down the street to the bar, glaring angrily at anyone who looked at her. She was very stressed and upset at you. Not only she had to pay that bastard's debt, she had also to take care of you, "What a life I'm having." She thought with frustration, clenching her fists tightly.
The woman impatiently stood to cross the road, waiting for the traffic light to turn red. Just then...
"Excuse me, miss. Can I have a minute of your time, please?"
Your mother shifted her attention to whomever was taking to her, seeing a man in a proper suit and was holding a suitcase. She raised an eyebrow, believing that he was a salesman, "I'm not interested in your products, leave me alone." She rudely stated, shifting her gaze to the road. The man chuckled and reached his hand in his pocket, "I don't actually want to sell you something, I only wish to help you." He told her, holding out a good amount of cash to her.
Your mother was hesitant, but she really needed the money so desperately, "You're not trying to get in my pants, right?"
"No no, quite the opposite. I just want to offer you a good deal."
"... I'm listening."
The man smiled in gratitude, his aura was friendly yet unsettling. However, your mother was willing to do anything for some cash.

The next day...
You sat in the park alone, munching on a bread you bought recently. Most children this time were at school, so you had no one to play with. You sighed and stored the remaining bread in your small bag.
A man in suit passed by you, checking his watch. However, you saw that he had dropped his wallet. So, you hopped of the bench and picked the object up, "Sir! Sir, you dropped your wallet!" You called out, chasing after the adult. The said guy stopped and turned his head, giving you a look of puzzlement, "Oh..." He voiced out, checking his pockets, "Thank you, young lady. I'm glad you were here to get it." The man who was the same one who met your mother previously.
He had dropped it intentionally in front of you to get your attention, that was all according to plan. The salesman crouched down and smiled friendly, "I want to help you, little one. So, here." He pulled out a brown card that had three geometric shapes on it, "There's a game that will be held, a cash prize will be given to the winner. If you're interested, you can join or let another family member join instead. Just call the number on the back." He told you, petting your head before standing, "I'm sure you need that money, right? Anyway, have a good day, little one" He added and proceeded to walk away.
You looked down at the card in puzzlement, not understanding why he gave it to you. However, there was indeed a number in the back. With a shrug of your shoulders, you tucked the card in your pocket and decided to return home or your mom will be mad at you.
-TIME SKIP-
Upon returning home, you found out that your mother was gone which wasn't new to you at all. You were lucky that she forgot her phone, so you decided to check if what that man was right or not. You picked the phone and dialed the number, it came to your advantage that your mum didn't have PIN lock in her phone. You waited for a few seconds as you listened to the annoying beeping.
"Hello?"
You flinched when a monotonous male voice spoke up, "Hello... um..." You didn't know what to say next.
"Do you wish to participate in the games?"
"... Y-Yes."
"Please state your name and birthdate."
"Y/N L/N. [DD/MM/2015]."
There was a moment of eerie silence.
"... Alright, meet us in XX Street at 12 am. Your password is Red Light, Green Light."
With that being said, the call ended. You stared at the phone, contemplating if what you did was right or wrong, "I did it and there's no going back." You mumbled and then deleted the number so your mother wouldn't discover what you did, "I'm doing this for my mother." You put the device back and went to get a few things with you just in case.
That day, your mother still didn't return at all. It was almost 12 am and she didn't return yet. You didn't want to waste time as you had a journey to XX Street. You quietly opened the apartment door and stepped out, closing the door behind you to secure the house. Your walk didn't take long to reach the location because you knew some shortcuts that helped you.
When you arrived there, you waited patiently, holding the strap of your little bag. The wait didn't last much when a van parked in front of you. The window opened, revealing a masked man with a white square on it, "Password." He straightforward ordered, not wasting time. You blinked at him, feeling your stomach flip for some reason. You were doing this for your mother, to help her pay her debt and finally love you. That was the only reminder you needed.
"R-Red Light, Green Light."
"Get in."
The back door opened and you still felt unsure, but you forced yourself to get in. There was no one in there, so you just took a random seat. The moment the door closed, weird gas was released inside, "Wh-What is this?" You asked with panic, but you received no reply. Suddenly, you felt drowsy and your eyes were slowly dropping. Before you know it, you found yourself falling asleep.
Yes you were doing this to gain your mother's love, but you didn't know that you were a part of a plan to stress out a certain previous winner of this game.
