Patrol
"Asui," Richard sighs, "... yeah. You caught me. Now what?"
"I..." Asui sighs, "I dunno. I guess my first question is why?"
"My life has been a nightmare since I was ten," Richard sighs, "my parents are emotionally abusive stoners and I've been schizophrenic for... I wanna say six years now? I mean, I haven't gotten help cause those meds mess with your brain and when you fuck up the brain that's kinda game over. You can't exactaly fix it."
"You are aware that the medications for schizophrenia are 110% safe right?" Asui asks, "they literally leave as much effect on your brain as Tylenol or something like that."
"They do?" Richard asks.
"Yes," Asui replies, "did... did you think they did shit like, permanently change it?"
"Yeah," Richard shrugs.
"No they don't," Asui sighs, "if ya stop taking them there is this like, one month period where ya gotta ease off but after that it's like you never took them at all. They don't change you. They don't hurt you. Have you been living with this for six years thinking that?"
"Bingo," Richard replies.
"Jesus Christ," Asui sighs, "so, why not go get help for it now?"
"Because I have to keep fighting," Richard explains, "I have to protect them. The kids are in danger, Asui. We have to save them. The adults who hurt them must be stopped. We can save them, and I can show you. I'm going out on patrol with Stain tonight. Give me a chance to show you. One chance."
Asui thinks, looking carefully at how Richard worded his request and explaining, "alright, but not because of what you said. Because of what you didn't say."
"How so?" Richard asks.
"You kept talking about them, never you. You never said anything about avoiding arrest or keeping yourself outta trouble. Every reason was the kids. I at least have to respect that," Asui replies, "so, when are we doing this?"
"Oh wait," Richard replies, "first off, you need a mask kid..."
"We must adress," Eraser Head sighs at the meeting after the sports festival, "Purity and those who follow him."
"The media has quickly begun to turn on U.A.," Cementoss adds, "after the speech of that Richard kid, the media has jumped behind him. We've got hundreds of letters about those who are afraid Richard will be expelled and requesting against such acts."
"Should we do that?" Midnight asks, "I don't think we should, to be honest. He just has a youthful energy."
"He seems unstable," All Might explains, "there is good in him, but he is like a wild animal, unhinged, but he can be tamed, taught better. There is much good in him, but also..."
All Might sighs and turns to Midnight, "you saw it too didn't you? That look in his eyes."
"I know what you mean," Midnight sighs, "there was a look. His eyes were wide. That wasn't the look of a hero, or a villain, it was the look of a weapon. Someone who has given up on being happy and slowly let their humanity slip. A man who fears not death, only failure. I think he needs more than a teacher. He needs mental help, and if we don't act soon..."
Midnight sternly looks at the other teachers, "he could very well snap..."
That night under the full moon, Asui wearing a simple mask, a hockey mask just like Richard's. As Stain and Richard make small talk prior to her arrival, she begins to have second thoughts. This is Stain, the hero killer. He could easily kill her on the spot. How does she know this isn't a trap or-
"Hey!" Richard greets with a smile, "you made it!"
"Hero," Stain hisses.
"Hey you hurt her, I hurt you!" Richard exclaims.
He turns back to her, "forgive him. He's a bit of an ass sometimes. OK so this is how we do. We capture child abusers, heroes or villains, and bring them to ol' Stain here and he gets a confession. Then we keep an eye out for anyone endangering kids and we attack them."
"Anything else?" Asui asks.
"Imma call you..." Richard thinks, "Pond. Imma call ya Pond so no one knows it's you. I'd come up with some clever nickname relating to pure or clean stuff but... I got nothing."
Asui shrugs nervously, "OK? I guess?"
"Let's get this show on the road!" Richard exclaims, "Stain! No hurting kids!"
Richard and Asui dash down the alleyway, Richard scaling a nearby building by a fire escape, Asui following by climbing the wall.
"This way!" Richard demands, leading her across several rooftops before reaching a nearly empty, shadier part of town.
"Why are we here?" Asui asks.
"Villians approaching," Richard explains, "got a tip from Stain."
"Why do you work with him." Asui asks.
"I..." Richard sighs, "I... failed someone. Someone I loved. So, I vowed, any means, to never fail again."
There's a crash down below, as a teen is cornered by a villain, a mugger with an electric quirk that allows him to fire jolts from the palm of his hand. A hero approaches, the one Richard attacked long ago, Backdash. The fire fighter like hero prepares to shoot water, and the villain smirks.
"Wait!" Richard yells, "it's a trap!"
Richard leaps down, landing on the villain.
"Mugging a kid," he glares, "real scum. Be purified, impure beast!"
Richard blasts the man in the face with Pure Light, and goes to help the kid as Backdash takes aim.
"Are you OK." Richard asks, "did he hurt you? Can you get home? Know the way? Need to borrow some money? You look like you could use a candy bar to calm the nerves. Anything you need?"
Asui looks at Richard, shocked by his sudden compassion towards this young teen, thirteen at most. He suddenly appears totally calm, rational, as he speaks to the kid. Eager to help him in any way.
"Freeze!" Backdash exclaims.
"Wait!" Asui pleads, "my name is... Pond. We're not your enemy! We just wanna help the kid!"
"You're working with him!" Backdash glares, "he's commited arson!"
"Please we don't want trouble," Asui pleads, "we can just go our seperate ways."
"You really wanna fuck with me again?" Richard, or rather, the more aggressive Purity, glares at Backdash, who flinches, and turns away.
"I..." his voice shakes, "I... I didn't see anything."
With an awkward laugh Backdash backs away.
"Dammit Purity I'm the one working here," Richard mutters to his alter ego.
"And they're in house 227?" Richard asks.
The child nods.
"Asui we got some crooked heroes!" Richard exclaims, let's go before Backdash gets backup." Richard exclaims.
Asui grabs Richard with her tounge and leaps onto a nearby roof, before asking as Richard leads, "what corrupt heroes?"
As she hops by his side, Richard explains, "a couple down the way. Adress 227. They are emotionally abusive to a son they had."
"We'll save him," Asui reassures Richard.
"No no no," Richard sighs, "a son they HAD. Not have. He's dead. It was to much to bare any longer for him. We must make them an example. It's a quirk marriage. One can take heat in and expel it, and the other had a fire quirk. Can you handle that? We each take one?"
Asui nods.
"Great," Richard smiles, "I'm jumping in the window."
"Wait what?" Asui asks.
Richard leaps down a floor and into the window of a penthouse where a blonde middle aged man with blue eyes taller than him and his wife, and tanned skin, and a woman with fair skin, green eyes, and red hair, turn to greet him.
"It's Purity!" The wife exclaims.
"Fall," the more hostile personality takes hold.
Asui enters as the wife prepares fire, grabbing her with her tounge, and slamming the woman into the wall. Richard slams into the husband, knocking him down, before laughing maniacally as Asui turns to see his other half, making sure the wife isn't going anywhere.
"You had a son," Purity laughs, tossing Asui his phone with the camera on, which Asui catches by instinct, "and you cut him with words until his demise. You tried to make your child a weapon, but you killed him!"
"Please," the husband coughs, "stop..."
Richard does not relent, "is it just!?! Is your impurity just!?! You're lucky I don't call Stain to kill you! Confess! Now!"
"Fine," the husband coughs up blood, "I did it. We did it."
He punches him once more just for the sake of it.
Asui looks at Richard in terror, which snaps him back to his true self. Richard begins to cry.
"I did it again," he looks at his blood stained hands, "he took control again. Pond, I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry."
Asui backs away.
"I understand," Richard sighs, "please, I can explain when we get out of here."
Asui complies, grabbing Richard and leaping out the window, leaping down the street a few buildings before stopping a fair distance away, returning the phone.
"What was that?" She asks.
"I..." Richard sighs, "when I face them, I... I change. Something in me snaps. He won't hurt a kid, and he won't kill, but when it comes to them..."
"Did he commit the arson?" Asui asks.
Richard nods.
"Go get help," Asui pleads, concerned, "you're better than this."
"Not yet," Richard sighs, "soon. I promise."
"It better be soon or I'll have to make sure you get help," Asui glares.
"You sound like my sister," Richard smiles, "Morgan."
"Who's Morgan?" Asui asks.
"Did I say that out loud?" Richard asks, "forget it. Look, normally I would do more but I don't want you to see any more of Purity, so let's just kick back and open a couple of sodas."
Richard tosses Asui an orange soda, sitting carelessly on the edge of the roof with her, indifferent if he falls as his legs dangle. Asui sits next to him, trying to think of a conversation topic, before deciding to ask, "so what video games you play?"
Hours go by, about four, until it's about two in the morning, and the two have forged a bond that will last.
"It's late," Asui sighs finishing off her soda, "I better head home. You're a cool dude Richard. I think I'll turn a blind eye to all this."
"Thanks sis," Richard smiles, "you know, family isn't blood, and I take care of my family. You need ANYTHING, just ask."
"You got it," Asui smiles, "stay safe, and get help soon."
"I will. See ya later," Richard waves goodbye as Asui leaps away.
"Well," he thinks aloud, "I better call it a night. Head on home. Should be fine. Doesn't look like anything else is gonna happen or-"
There's a scream, to which Richard instinctively responds, leaping into action only to find a young girl with short blonde hair, appearing to be a high schooler as her victim flees, bleeding, due to her leaping back in response to Richard appearing. He instantly panics, as this is a kid. He can't hurt a kid. He can't hurt her. Maybe he can help her? Teach her better? He can save her. He can save someone!
"Don't do this," Richard pleads, "wait."
"Oh do you bleed?" She laughs, "You're Stain's friend right? Do you bleed? I wanna see you bleed!"
She throws her syringe like weapon that Richard avoids, catching it and shattering it with his power.
"Wait!" He begs, "you're Toga. Listen to me! Please!"
Richard begins to see her. Morgan, with her short brown hair, his vision blinking between Toga and Morgan. It's to late for one, but not for the one before him.
"You like blood?" Richard asks, his voice desperate, seeing only one he must protect, a child who he can save, "take mine! Listen! Please!"
"You crying?" Toga asks, almost calming down, "why are you crying?"
"Have to protect have to protect," Richard repeats, "you can be better than this. Why do you do this?"
"Cause Stain is right," Toga explains, "and I like the blood."
"Take mine then!" Richard begs, desperate, "listen to me! You can be better! Let me help you! Do you have a family? Blood or otherwise?"
"I have the League of Villain back at the bar," Toga explains, "why are you so worked up? I'm fine with-"
Richard flips and grabs her, hugging her, crying, "no no no no no! Do you drink?"
"Soda?" Toga asks, "yeah but that's all."
Richard hugs her tighter. She doesn't resist, not finding it unpleasant, but weird and unexpected. "It's not to late!" He exclaims, "it's not to late! They're not family! They're evil! Please! Let me help you! You're mentally ill! You can get help! You can join me! We can purify! We can be family! Please just let me help you! I don't care what you did! You're a human being! I care about you even if I don't know you that well!"
The last three, those echo in her mind. He doesn't care what she did? She's a human being? He cares about her?
"Will we have fun brother?" She asks, "will we purify?"
"We can purify," he hugs her, still shaking at the thought of her getting hurt, his protective instinct kicking in, "but you'll get help, and you'll stay somewhere safe. OK? OK?"
"OK," she replies, hugging her back, "it'll be fun big brother."
This bond, this deal, has now been sealed. Richard vowing to help her, and sees her for what she is. A good person at heart, who is merely in a very very dark place. His burden to protect, his compassion for those who have been hurt, are odd to her. Someone who cares about her? She agrees due to curiosity.
"Come on Morgan," he leads her, the hallucination fading, "shit, I mean, Toga, let's go home..."
