CHAPTER 30: KNOWLEDGE

Okay. This is the DUN DUN DUN chapter so like...............read it.

"Information is not knowledge."

― Albert Einstein

THEY WERE WAITING for the army to prepare themselves, and get ready for war. It was a long day and they were already far behind. They had their plan ready. They would head straight to SwynCrest where they would position the army in the most needed place while the SwynCrest army comes from the other side.

They were going to swallow them whole.

Helene sat worriedly in her room, trying to think everything out before they would finally go back into the ships once again and began their long journey back. She wondered what Kevin and her parents were doing back home and whether they missed her like she missed them. What were they doing at the moment?

Helene looked at the clock and was up in seconds. She had promised Cas she would meet him outside the castle and in the garden because he seemed as if he had something urgent to tell her and he had to say it then and now or he would never say it again. Helene was glad she could read him like an open book, just like he could read her. It came with an advantage and a shortcoming.

She shut her door behind her, looking left and right to make sure no one was there. And sure enough, though there were guards there, who were doing quite a shitty job at looking in intimidating and ready for a fight if they needed to get into one.

"Where are you going?" Legion's familiar voice made her look around. He was leaning against the wall, his hair hiding his tanned forehead and he looked literally mouth-watering. Helene obviously hid that fact but Legion smirked either way.

"Please keep those thoughts at bay. We're connected now remember? Or do you keep forgetting?"

Helene rolled her eyes and turned her body fully towards his, "Is there literally no way I can hide my thoughts against yours? It's not fair! How come I can't hear your thoughts like that?"

"That's because I'm blocking you. I could teach you when we get on the ship to SwynCrest if you want," he shrugged nonchalantly.

Helene nodded in affirmative, "Yes, please. I can't have you knowing all my dirty secrets now can I?"

He shrugged and nodded towards the stairs, "I don't want to keep you waiting. Go do whatever you were going to do before you stopped to talk to me. I'll be in my room if you need me."

And then with a wink, he was gone.

Helene bit her lip and headed down, already five minutes late.

Cas was supposed to be her best friend, wasn't he? After Helene met Legion, her and Cas spent more and more less time together, as if Legion was stopping them from hanging out. But at the same time, Helene loved hanging out with Legion.

These days, Cas was more put together and serious than she had ever seen him. Maybe because of the war? Maybe some tension at home? But they told everything to each other and he was hiding more than one thing, Helene was sure of it. She had confirmed it so when she had asked Cas about who he was texting that day on the ship, he had tried to avoid the subject and bounce around it as if he didn't want to tell her. But at the end, it became more of a have to then want to.

It made Helene more worried about Cas. And what worried her was that she never worried. Especially not about anyone.

This trip was making her a softie.

She found Cas in the garden, pacing around as if he was worried she wouldn't show. Helene froze for a second, watching him run his hand through his hair as he muttered something under his breath, as if he was rehearsing for something.

That Cas boy. He likes you too.

That was what must have ruined their friendship, making her question whether she liked him too. And so far, she didn't feel anything special or anything like the way she did with Legion...

"Cas?" she whispered as she walked out of the shadows, looking confused. "You called?"

Cas turned around so fast that he nearly fell, making Helene shoot out her hand by instinct to steady him.

He chuckled, "Yeah, um, sorry about that."

"Yeah, no problem," Helene frowned. His palms were sweating and he looked as if he was about to shower her with his feelings.

He cleared his throat, "Helene I-" Suddenly, he froze, as if he couldn't say anything else. And then he let out the most nervous laugh ever, "I broke your xbox before this all started. It was me, not Ella."

That was the last thing she expected out of his mouth. She thought he was about to sprout something about how much he loved her or something. Didn't that happen in books? Wasn't that supposed to happen?

Nothing happened for a good five minutes and Cas took it as an advantage to start rambling, "I know you are probably really angry at me and probably hate me very much now since I broke your new xbox that you had gotten only two weeks before. I'm really sorry and I'll make sure to buy you a new one, I promise. You don't need to worry about it at all-"

Helene cleared her throat, stopping him from rambling, "Cas, it's okay."

Silence.

"Okay."

"But you didn't call me here to tell me that, now did you?" Helene said, her voice low. "Since when do we not tell each other everything?"

Cas looked conflicted, as if he was having a full blown war in his head about whether he should tell her or not. Helene waited patiently, waiting for him to make his decision.

Finally, he bit his lip and put his hands in his pockets and murmured something so low that Helene had to go, 'huh?'

"I like Brenna."

Helene had to grab his arm to prevent herself from falling. "What did you say?"

"I'm not repeating myself, sorry."

"B-but-how? That's not even possible! She isn't even likable let alone lovable!"

"That's rude."

"Only because you like her-"

"Sh!"

Helene rolled her eyes, "To be honest, I was literally waiting for you to confess your undying love for me."

"You?" Cas looked confused. "Sorry, Hel."

"Oh. Looks like the Princess was wrong."

"Huh?"

"Nothing. But we're good right?"

"Yeah, yeah. I mean how can we not be?" Cas sent her a knowing grin.

Helene couldn't help but smile back and gripped his hand, "Why don't you tell her yourself and see what she says?"

The horrified look on his face made her laugh, "She'll stomp on my little heart and walk away. I'd like to keep it intact, thank you very much."

Helene sighed, "Come on. I mean at least it's not as scary as getting stabbed or something."

"In the heart? Yeah. Something like that."

"You really like her, don't you?"

"Yeah."

"Ask her out."

"No. I have to listen to my heart." Cas patted his chest and folded his arms.

Helene smiled, "Unlike you, I'm actually really busy. Brenna-yes your very own-invited me to join her for a walk and I'm sure it means something more. Maybe she'll confess her undying love for you and you two can live happily ever after with ten kids. You have my full support."

"Ten kids?" Cas looked terrified.

"Ask Ella to be your babysitter or something." And then Helene left Cas and his terrified face in the garden to think over whatever they talked about.

Helene headed towards the main gate where Brenna had also told her to join her in their small walk. By then, Helene had memorized the palace and knew where she was going. She spotted the dark haired beauty playing with a silver dagger in her hand, looking around nervously.

First Cas and then Brenna?

"You wanted to talk?" Helene approached her.

Just as she arrived in front of her, a servant walked passed them, offering them sweets on a silver platter. Helene handed one to Breanna and took one for herself.

"I wanted to walk." Brenna licked her fingers, finishing off the sweet and sucking her teeth.

Helene felt it melt on her tongue, the sugar making the blood in her veins spark and her fire stir. It was delicious.

They walked for a while before Brenna began to talk, choosing her words carefully, "They sent a guard to tell me we will be leaving at dawn. The army is restless and ready for war."

Helene nodded, not trusting herself to speak.

"I am worried."

"What possibly could you be worried about? You got what you came for and now we are leaving. Just what we wanted."

Brenna looked at Helene sideways, "It went too well. Somethings wrong, can't you feel it?"

"I mean, I feel victorious. I feel like we won somehow-"

"Besides that, though."

Now that Helene thought about it, Brenna was right. The meeting had been short and she had expected it to be much longer. The king looked slightly smug about it at the end as if he had also won something. Something more precious than his whole army.

"Now that you put it like that, I mean," Helene chewed her lips thoughtfully. "What would he be up to? Should we gather everyone and tell them about this?"

"I don't think that's really necessary," Brenna replied.

"Are you sure? I mean, I literally just left Cas like two seconds ago when we were talking," Helene said. She replayed back her conversation with him about Brenna, Brenna who was standing right in front of her. Cas had been worried that if Brenna knew the truth about his feelings, she would turn him down. Brenna, who held all her secrets of the heart.

Brenna, who was standing right in front of her, ready to answer all those secrets with the right word.

Biting back a grin, Helene leaned a bit closer, almost confidentially, and said, "Speaking of Cas, I had a question for you."

"Shoot," Brenna said, though her eyebrows arched in suspicion.

Dammit, she was already catching on to something.

"About him. Do you... uh...like him?" Helene asked. Fuck being subtle about it, Helene had never learnt its art anyways.

"Yeah, I guess," Brenna said, the suspicious look on her face deepening.

"You like him enough to..." Helene paused. "To date?"

Brenna burst out laughing.

"Oh, that's cute," Brenna said when she finally stopped. "You playing matchmaker for your little buddy, huh?"

"No? Yes!" Helene sighed. "Maybe?"

"Oh? You're actually serious about this?" Brenna asked.

"Come on! Just answer the damn question," Helene whined, tired of the wait.

"I don't date. Besides, I don't think Your sweet little innocent friend would ever like someone like me," Brenna shrugged.

"What do you mean someone like you?" Helene asked with a frown. "What's wrong with you?"

"I mean, I'm tough, not the usual girl you'd meet, you know? Sort of like you, but-" Brenna cut off her sentence abruptly and sighed. "I mean, you can go out in your armor and be the cutting edge hero and then come back and dress up to go out with your prince. It looks good. But me? I'm the Captain of the Guard, and I'm basically a testosterone filled guy minus the testerone and guy parts."

Helene stared at her.

Brenna waved her hand. "Nevermind. Forget it. It's not gonna work. Anyways, we should go back to the real problem here, this stupid king who thinks that he can-"

"He does like you," Helene blurted out.

Brenna's eyes widened, and she turned around. "WHAT?" Brenna choked.

"Well-shit. It was supposed to be a secret," Helene bit her lip. "But anyways, if you're worried that he doesn't like you, then he does. Like, like like."

Brenna wrinkled her nose. "Who the fuck even says like like? What are we, two?"

"So? Will you go out with him?" Helene asked.

"I-" Brenna sighed. "I think I will-"

Cutting herself off, Brenna turned around, eyes darting. Grabbing Helene, she dragged her close to a near-by bush.

"Listen," she hissed.

Helene held her breath and waited for some noise she could hear. Instead, she heard some muffled talking.

"...I didn't call you to hear jokes, David."

Two things hit Helene at once. One, it was Legion's voice speaking. Two, she knew David. He was the man she met with the woman Lauren. What the hell was he doing here? Most importantly, how the hell did he get here?

"Okay, sorry. I just wanted to remind you that this is some serious shit. You should tell your team about it."

"I will after you tell me. You and I have been here for an hour now and you still haven't given me anything."

There was a pause, "Fine. The picture is in your room on your dressing table. His name and his identification is in the other papers in the file."

"Who's he?" Helene could hear the frustration in Legion's voice.

David seemed reluctant to spill whatever it was, "Does it matter? I got what you wanted and that's information-"

"I swear to god I could just go in your head and take all the information I want but I'm not. So tell me what I want to know and then you may leave for all I care."

David's silence made Helene creep closer but Brenna pulled her back.

"Fine. He's his son."

This time Legion was silent, probably contemplating what to say in response to hide his shock. Helene realized that she knew him too well.

Suddenly, she wasn't there anymore. She was standing inside a cave which seemed too familiar. She was suddenly seeing many things, and hearing too many voices and seeing snippets of everything. It was too much information.

And then it was gone.

Legion said,"Okay. Thank you. Bye."

Before he could walk out, Brenna grabbed Helene and teleported them to another hallway. But Helene wasn't done. Not even close to done.

"To his room. Now."

Brenna's eyes widened and Helene knew that as much as they were friendly with Legion, this was a line she would never cross. But Helene needed her to. She needed her more than ever right now. What if Legion chose not to show them who the son of Asmodues was? What if Helene never found out?

"Please," Helene never begged. "I have to."

And before she could beg more, Brenna pursed her lips and grabbed her arm and they were inside, in a blink of an eye.

Helene blinked white light out of her eyes as she turned around to get a full glimpse of the room. It was large and it was beautiful. Much larger than the room given to her and her friends obviously.

"Helene," Brenna looked pained being there, as if she would get executed for this, "Hurry. We don't have time."

She swallowed, her eyes landing straight on the dressing table as David had said so. Surely enough, she found an orange envelope addressed to Legion on the brown table with the small lamp and a black pen. Helene quickly picked it up and with shaking fingers and excitement rolling in her stomach, she pulled out the picture. Her first thought was no. And then it was, yes. Why hadn't I thought about that sooner?

Everything seemed so much clearer at the moment as she flipped from the picture to the identification papers.

Grave Seelie Galane. Son of Asmodeus.

Helene read through the white highly classified papers, and heard Brenna desperately saying her name. Brenna didn't know. Legion didn't know. No one knew.

He's not our brother.

But he was. He was her half brother. He was half Creature and half a Scar. He was also a traitor.

Before Helene could scream or yell, the door opened, revealing a very startled Legion. Brenna groaned.

And Helene turned around, tears threatening to fall out any moment.

"What's this?" Her voice was small.

Legion looked genuinely confused, "Helene I-"

"Take me back," Helene looked to Brenna who was frozen in her spot, "Please, please take me back to my room. Please." She must have heard the plea in her voice as she stepped forward, her eyes carefully.

The pain didn't go away. It never went even when Helene lay alone in bed, crying until her chest hurt and her tears dried to nothing.
