There's an old saying about being as blind as a bat.  Honestly people would be lucky to be as blind as bat because from what I understand bats can see just fine and they also have cool sonar abilities that let them navigate in virtual pitch blackness.  Humans are screwed in the absence of light, but bats can get by and would probably laugh at us for how pathetic our visual senses are.  You may as well accuse dolphins of not being able to swim or eagles of not being able to fly for about all the sense that saying makes.

There's also a saying about being as deaf as a doornail, and I do find it likely that doornails are incapable of hearing, but so is pretty much any inanimate object.  I wonder why doornails got singled out for that particular analogy.  For that matter they can't see either so you might as well say I'm blind as a doornail also.
