Black Envelopes

He knew all about her. After all, he didn't make deals without doing research first. But that didn't prepare him for her showing up at his doorstep.
"What are you doing here?" He demanded, dumbfounded at her lacy white dress and shiny pearl-colored heels. By the moon, she looks better than I had imagined.
"What do you expect? My blind date partner agreed to go out with me, then bails!" She cried in a voice angry, yet hurt. He wanted nothing more than to hug her and brush her hazel hair out of her eyes.
"How did you find out my address?" He demanded, in a voice way harsher than he had intended.
"It's in your Facebook timeline. I had to find you somehow. Now are we going, or not?"
"I...look, tonight's not good for me. Maybe some other time..." He wanted to punch himself. He really did want this date, but he couldn't get his other half under control. And there's nothing that ruins a first date more than turning into a violent, uncontrollable wolf.
"Tonight's not good for you?!" She yelled. "You're the one who set this up! What could possibly go wrong in your life that makes you say that now's not a good time?"
"Listen," he paused, sighing inwardly. He really, really wanted this date. "I will go with you, but I may have to leave early."
"Fine, but I'm going there with you this time. I don't want you bailing out again." She smiled, a smile so sweet and dazzling he wanted to bite her soft lips.
He didn't have any fancy clothes on, but he took her to the gourmet restaurant they had planned to meet at. As he watched her slide into the shotgun seat of his Camaro he marvelled at how she had walked all the way to his apartment. She was stubborn.
For what it's worth, he did have fun on the drive there, it wasn't awkward like he expected it to be. They sang the same songs on the radio, and she had an amazing voice.
When they arrived, he held her hand as she stepped out of the car and he walked her in, loving the soft feel of her fingers in his. She sat down in the seat across from him and ordered a light coffee from the waiter. He asked for a coke. Once the waiter had left, he turned to look her over.
"So let's pretend that you haven't seen my Facebook profile. I'm Daniel. And you are..?"
"Liana. What do you like to do on your spare time?"
"Well..." I like to run around the city at night as a crazy, bloodthirsty wolf. "I like to sing." He held back a facepalm as soon as he said it. Really? Singing? That'll make her respect you.
"Really? Me too!" She smiled at him. Maybe this could work.
"Do you...have a favorite animal?" Oh yeah, now you're a sly one. Daniel smiled at her.
"Animals? Oh, well, I like them all, but if I had to choose a favorite...no, it's stupid." She blushed, unconsciously twirling a ringlet of hazel hair around her finger.
"It's not stupid if you like it."
"Most people don't like them, let's just drop it, please? I don't want you to think I'm weird." She looked at him with her beautiful eyes and he melted.
"Fine. What do you like to sing?" Daniel slid his chair closer to the table, closer to her.
"I like to write my own." She grinned, sitting a little straighter. "Maybe we could do a duet sometime."
"Woah, making future plans all ready?" He teased.
She ignored him. "Do you play any instruments?"
He shrugged. "I mess around with a guitar every once in awhile."
"Cool! I've been learning to play the piano, but I can't find an affordable teacher." Liana sighed.
"My uncle can play pretty good. Maybe he can teach you."
"Future plans, huh?" She grinned, poking fun at his pouting face.
"Well, if you want to..." He blushed. "I...I would like to see you again."
She was about to say something when the waiter returned with their drinks and two menus. She thanked him politely and he left. She flipped through while he watched her, scanning the items. She glanced up with a raised eyebrow and he fumbled to open up his menu and hastily pretend to read platter descriptions. He finally settled on a sirloin steak with a baked potato. She told him she decided to get a shrimp linguini alfredo.
Within ten minutes of light chatting, the waiter returned and took their orders, scribbling them down on a small pad of paper.
Their food came shortly after, and it was excellent. But Daniel could care less about the food. He loved watching Liana smile at him, and he loved to make her laugh. She was perfect.

........................................................................

He was driving Liana back to her house when she giggled. "This was actually my first date."
"Really?" Daniel smiled over at her. "Was it good?"
She laughed, he loved  her laugh, the way her skin crinkled around her eyes when she smiled. "Yes!"
       "That's good! Maybe...maybe we can do it...again...sometime..."
"I would love that, Daniel." She started to move her hand toward his, then stopped. He reached over and grabbed it, making her smile again. She moved closer, but in doing so caused her purse to tip over, and a handful of black envelopes spilled out.
"Oh no! I'm so sorry!" She apologized, tearing her hand out of his to snatch them up off of the floor. He pulled over to the curb to help her.
       "I'm sorry, I..."
"Liana, it's really fine, you don't have to be sorry."
After collecting all of the envelopes, Liana stuffed them all back into her shiny grey purse.
       "I didn't want to-"
She was cut off by Daniel putting a finger to his lips. He looked into her green eyes as she looked into his amber ones. He leaned in.
       "Daniel, what are you-"
The his lips fell on hers. For a moment, nothing else existed. They sat in his car, under a streetlamp like a spotlight. She felt like she could fly up to the moon that very instant. Her hands instinctively wrapped around his neck, pulling him closer into the kiss. Butterflies rose inside her chest, threatening to carry her off and break the precious kiss.
She surrendered her first kiss to him, this boy she had just met, but it felt so right.

........................................................................

She didn't want to go, but Daniel's Camaro pulled up in front of her apartment building. She turned to him, smiling and lacing her fingers into his. "I had a lot of fun tonight. Thanks for that date."
"No, thank you for convincing me to go. I'm glad I did." He leaned over and kissed her forehead.
She popped open the door, sliding out before she turned back around to grin at him. "You still have my number?"
       "Yeah, I kinda memorized it."
She grinned. "See you later." She shut the door and he rolled down the window.
       "See ya."
       "It's wolf, by the way."
       "What?"
"You asked me earlier what my favorite animal is. It's a wolf."
