13.
Legolas closed the door behind him and Thranduil turned to face his son.
"What did you want to discuss with me Legolas?"
"Ada." Said Legolas. "I ask you to listen to me and don't overreact."
Thranduil had never seen his son so nervous before, and nodded. The ice cold eyes almost burned Legolas.
"Under the journey we got attacked by mountain trolls. Aragorn got out alright, I...got badly injured...one of the trolls found one of my own daggers on my back."
At Thranduil's terrified and worried look he hastily added.
"We met ents who helped us find a village where we met a healer I own my life to."
"How did it happen?" Thranduil asked, his throat suddenly feeling dry.
"I heard the footsteps, but we were too late."
He frowned, trying to take everything in. He could see on Legolas that it was not all, and immediately grew more uneasy.
"I...under the journey Aragorn and I...grew closer."
"Mani marte?" (what happened?)
Thranduil's face showed that he was patiently waiting for the rest, and Legolas took a deep breath.
"We kissed." He dropped the bomb.
"Amin hiraetha." (I'm sorry)
Thranduil's eyes darkened visibly, but he stayed quiet. His lips were pressed in a thin line, and a frown was edged on his face. He was actually speechless.
"He is a Elandili Ada." (Half elf, father)
Thranduil signed deeply and closed his eyes, before he faced his son. His face was straight, but anger was seen in his sapphire eyes.
"Will you abandon your duties here for another century? Will you dwell in despair? What have we discussed Legolas?" He asked, a bit more sternly than needed.
Legolas was surprised, and actually did not know how to answer. When he finally got his senses back he replied.
"I...I don't...?"
Thranduil sighed.
"How are you going to solve all of the problems? Would Aragorn's people respect this? Would yours?"
Legolas pressed his lips together, feeling the panic rise in his throat. He did not want to lose his father or his lover.
"I just hope will all my heart they will accept it. I hope you will."
Thranduil pretended not to hear him.
"How about Queen Arwén?"
Legolas nervously twiddled with his hair, no words being necessary. He felt awful for it, but did not know what to do about it. Arwén was a very good friend of his, and had been long before the journey began. Either way someone would get hurt, there was no avoiding this.
Thranduil frowned deeply, sensing Elrond's anger from the distance.
Legolas saw it, and continued to speak the keep the conversation going.
"I want to live one lifetime with him, filling it with more joy then all of the uncountable centuries I'll live. When he dies I will.."
"Legolas!" Thranduil finally interrupted him, making Legolas stop talking at once. The younger elf almost held his breath in fear.
"Mankoi lle uma tanya?" (Why did you do it?) The elven King spat out, more roughly than intended. Legolas did not flinch, knowing he would get that reaction eventually.
"Mankoi lle irma sint?" (Why do you want to know?)
"Amin dele ten' lle Legolas."
(I am worried for you)
"Manke tanya tuula?"
Thranduil opened his mouth to say something more, when Legolas reply got to him. He looked at his son, who now had tears glistening in his eyes. His fatherly instinct told him to do something, anything, to comfort his son. Even as anger took over.
"'Why'? Of course I care for you, I always have! You are my son!"
Legolas smiled a little, it looking a bit weird as he was misty eyed.
They had grown apart, and they were not as close as they were when Legolas was a small elfling, in need of his father. Now he was grown up, but he still needed his father. Just a pity Thranduil did not see that.
Legolas lowered his eyes, not daring to look at his father anymore. He swallowed hard, trying not to cry in front of his father. All he wanted, and needed, was a hug. Just to show that his father did not hate him.
Eventually Thranduil sighed and clenched his fists, having to use all of his power not to embrace his son, or just slap him.
"Legolas...the love you feel for that human, is not real!"
Their gazes met, burning into each other's. Thranduil's was like ice, but Legolas did not back down.
Thranduil had lost his wife long ago, and that almost made him sail to the undoing lands. Legolas was everything that still held him here. If Legolas would sail when he lost his family Thranduil would follow him, and then Mirkwood would be left without a ruler.
Legolas looked up at him, not ashamed of his tears anymore.
"It feels right. Seas Ada let me share one lifetime with them. When Aragorn is dead I will continue my life." He swallowed the truth, and continued, eyes moistening more, one tear slowly dripping down the smooth skin.
"Aragorn's heir will go on, and create a new bloodline of kings which I hopefully will be there to support."
Normally Thranduil would have corrected Legolas lack of polite, but he didn't. He sighed when Legolas said 'hopefully, and looked up at his son again. The King realised he did not know his son half as well as he would like to.
"I forbid you to be with him." He said and lowered his head, making his hair fall in front of his face. It may seem rough, but it was for the better. His son would not feel the pain of losing a loved one, he would not allow it.
"Ada." Legolas said quietly, still misty eyed. He could literally feel his own heart break. Suddenly the air got hard to breathe.
"Seas." (Please)
The King looked up again, and their eyes met. Even Thranduil had tears in his eyes, pleading with Legolas.
"It will only end with you being just as lost as me. I don't want that for you, I know what it's like losing someone you love dearly. Please Legolas don't put that upon yourself."
Legolas searched his father's eyes, and found anger, and disappointment.
He licked his lips, opened them, but nothing came out. He swallowed, and eventually spoke.
"It just feels right." He said quietly.
Thranduil frowned, seeing that Legolas did not get his point.
"It is not right! It is wrong! Two males can't love one another Legolas! It's against nature!"
"Ada Tampa!" (Father, stop!)
"Dina! Amin n'rangwa edanea" (Quiet! I don't understand these humans)
"Why?" Said Legolas said, to mad to even care about talking in Sindarin anymore.
"If Estel really loved you then he shouldn't have done it. He only hurt you."
"That's not true."
"Why not?"
"Because I kissed him!" Legolas shouted, but immediately felt ashamed. Both for lying to his father but also for shouting.
"Amin uuma malia" (I don't care.)
Legolas slowly shook his head.
"Amin feuya ten' lle" (You disgust me.)
"Then leave."
The younger elf felt numb. He wanted to fight back, to raise his voice again but found no words. So he did something he never thought he would actually do. He ran.
Aragorn looked around when he heard the light footsteps of the elf, and immediately got approached. He saw the elf shake slightly, and looked at him in concern. Legolas was upset, it must have gone bad.
"He didn't accept us." Legolas whispered and tightened his knuckles, avoiding the man's gaze.
"He told me it was unnatural...that two males can't love each other."
Aragorn sighed, knowing the troubled bond between the elven King and his son. Their bond hadn't been that good through the years, but it had finally grown tighter.
"What shall we do?" Aragorn asked, concerned.
"I do not know." Legolas said quietly and looked at him. It was late, and even if they had wanted to continue their journey they couldn't. Aragorn needed sleep and it was too dangerous to travel at night, so they went to Legolas room.
Not did they knew Thranduil saw everything, and silent tears rolled down his face. He wanted nothing more for his son than to be happy, but knew it was impossible. He would fade with the grief. He cursed the world for being so unfair, and cursed himself for being the worst father.
Legolas changed into his nightshirt and walked to stand in front of a window to look out. The cold breeze cradled his skin as his eyes focused on the trees. They swayed gently in the wind, like his hair now was as he became lost in thought.
Knowing what he thought about Aragorn walked up to wrap his arms around him from behind. He looked at Legolas profile, and saw his eyes glistening.
"What are you thinking about?" He whispered softly as he nuzzled the elf's neck gently.
Legolas shuddered at the sensation, and immediately longed for more.
"How I will leave my father alone with all responsibilities.. How I just ignore him. He wants the best for me underneath the anger, I know that. He just didn't knew how to reach to me."
"It's something more than that." Aragorn said softly.
"What's wrong?"
Finally Legolas sighed and held the hands Aragorn had laid around his waist.
"I don't know what to do. My father literally made me choose between you and him, and he is my father. Despite our troubled...relationship I...I still love him Aragorn. I can't go against him."
Aragorn felt like someone took his heart and squished it. It hurt that bad. He leaved a soft kiss on Legolas neck before he answered, swallowing the pain.
"He wanted you save you pain Legolas. He knows what it is like to lose a loved one."
He felt Legolas tense up slightly and knew he said the wrong thing. He closed his eyes, feeling stupid.
"I'm sorry, let's not talk about it."
"No." Legolas turned around in the embrace and looked into the man's eyes.
"We must."
Aragorn looked into the endlessly blue eyes, and sighed.
"Fine, what do you want me to say?"
"Not you, me. Let me tell you something."
Aragorn nodded and met his gaze, and Legolas spoke.
"Do not feel guilty about this. I will not sail to Valinor when you die. I will come back home, and continue my life with my father." It sounded strained to say, and he swallowed hard.
"I promise. No matter what relationship we have, or how early you pass..."
Aragorn eyes moistened a little and he embraced Legolas tightly.
"Thank you, that makes me feel better."
Legolas leaned his cheek on Aragorn's shoulders, exhaled and relaxed his whole body.
"We should sleep." He whispered and tangled his fingers in the dark hair.
"Mmhm."
But they stayed in the embrace another ten minutes, before they actually broke apart to undress.
Legolas grinned at the sight of the King naked and lay down on the covers, almost innocently. Aragorn grinned amused and sat down beside him. Leaning over him he kissed him, letting his hand stroke the golden hair gently. He put his leg over his waist and held himself up with an elbow.
Legolas put his hand behind Aragorn's neck, kissing him deeper. When Aragorn's tongue gently lapped at his lower lip Legolas opened his mouth, allowing it to enter his mouth.
It was wrong, they both knew it. The closer they got the more it would hurt. It was borrowed time they knew that, but they couldn't stop. Maybe it was better spending the time you had instead of wasting it? The memories would always be with them even if they tried to forget.
Aragorn's tongue began to gently stroke Legolas, who moaned softly underneath him. Their hands slowly began to explore each other, touching placed where they have never been touched before.
A few hours later the moonlight fell through the window, reflecting on two sweaty figures on the bed. Aragorn on his back, Legolas head resting on his shoulder. Their legs were intertwined as they slept peacefully, all problems gone from their mind. At least temporarily.
