Chapter 36
Steve's Point of View
As they sat in their cells, Alex explained their friendship from when they were kids.
"We lived next to each other all our life, in a small village called Wildewood in Sector 48. Our parents became friends, and we became friends because we saw each other literally every day.
"Our parents were humble farmers, even though they weren't Villagers. One day, your parents took a trip to Mojang Headquarters. They came back looking like they had seen a ghost.
"They had found out that Mojang was going to control monsters. But not only that, they knew that Mojang would use it for evil. They told our entire village about it, and somehow Mojang found out about that. They came and killed everyone in the village. Including our parents and your sister.
"But we escaped. We were on the run for weeks. Mojang attacked us continuously. One day, they captured me. I was transferred here for a reason I don't know. I've been here for about a year."
Steve didn't know what to say. He had just learned a huge chunk of his past. And it was a terrible past.
"Wow. We are best friends," Steve said slowly.
"Yeah. You're welcome for saving you, by the way," she smirked, flipping a handmade stone knife in her hand.
"Thanks," Steve said weakly.
They sat there in silence for awhile, neither of them knowing what to say. Steve couldn't believe Mojang had killed an entire village, minus two people. Just how many people has Mojang taken the lives of?
Suddenly, there was a large boom by the iron door. A huge hole was left in the wall, and there stood Jay, Ruby, Kirai, and Tommy. It looked pretty awesome, all of them standing there with determined looks in their eyes.
They looked around the jail and found Steve. They ran to his cell, the other prisoners pleading to help them escape.
Jay grinned when he reached Steve. "Can't stop yourself from getting caught, can ya?"
"Shut up." But Steve grinned too. It was good to see his friends.
"Where's the key?" Kirai asked.
"Only Jeb has one," Steve replied.
"Good thing I brought a spare," Jay said, pulling out another block of TNT.
He placed the TNT and lit it. Everyone backed away from it. It exploded, leaving a hole in the bars.
Two explosions is bound to attract attention, Steve thought.
Just as he thought this, a few guards appeared at the hole Jay's first TNT had made. Tommy started shooting them down as Steve exited his cage.
Ruby ran up to him and hugged him. "I missed you," she said.
"I missed you too," Steve replied, hugging back.
"Mission success!" Jay said. "Now let's get out of here!"
Steve was about to follow when he remembered Alex. He turned around.
She was looking sadly at him from inside her cell. Surprisingly, the TNT had only affected Steve's cell.
"Not without her," Steve said. Ruby looked at him. "Or the rest of the prisoners," he added sheepishly.
"Dude, I don't have any more TNT," Jay said. "We have to go."
"I'm not leaving her--or them--here," Steve stated determinedly.
"There are too many of them!" Kirai shouted as she and Tommy held off another wave of guards.
"I'll be quick," Steve said. "Find my stuff. It should be in a chest somewhere." With that, he ran out the hole, dodging guards swinging at him.
Steve found the door he was looking for and entered it. It was the main room where he had seen Jeb. He had expected it to be empty at this hour.
But it wasn't.
He didn't know how he didn't hear anyone; they were all just as loud as earlier. Only the people closest to the door noticed him come in at first, but when they shouted, everyone noticed. All sounds stopped.
Steve froze.
Everyone else froze too.
Suddenly, there was movement. A blur of brown fur was racing towards him. Steve recognized the bacca.
Jerome.
He charged towards Steve with two diamond axes, yelling all the way. A few blocks from Steve, a voice called out.
"Stop!"
Jerome stopped. A person pushed through the crowd.
Jeb.
And he had a necklace with a key on it around his neck.
"Steve! Buddy!" Jeb shouted. "I'm glad you escaped. I wanted to--"
He was cut off by a loud boom above. It was definitely not Jay's TNT.
Jeb looked confused, then some people walked in. As they came closer, Steve realized they weren't people.
They were Witches.
But in place of their witchy hats were iron helmets with the word Mojang on them.
One stepped in front of the rest, one with a gold helmet.
"Hello, Steve," she said in a crackly voice.
"Hello, Epsilon," Steve replied.
The Witch looked confused. "I am not Epsilon. I am Eta."
"Oh. Hello, Eta," Steve tried again.
"Yeah. Hi. We were sent by the Almighty Notch to collect Steve here," Eta said to Jeb.
"Okay. Where are my 800 emeralds?" Jeb asked, crossing his arms.
Eta muttered under her breath and searches for something in her pocket. She pulled out a piece of paper.
"Dear Jeb," she read. "It has come to my attention that you failed to capture Steve numerous times. Therefore, you will not be receiving 800 emeralds. From, Notch."
"Why that little..." Jeb growled. "That's it! GET 'EM!"
The Witches and the bounty hunters started fighting. Steve could barely contain a laugh.
Jeb ran by to help fight, and Steve reached out and seized the key, which came off the necklace. Jeb didn't seem to notice.
Steve ran out the door, dodging Witch and bounty hunter battles. When he reached the jail, he unlocked all the cells, which totalled about ten.
"Nice job, man," Jay said to Steve, clapping him on the back. "How did you take the key without him noticing?"
"You could say I had a little help from my Mojang friends," Steve replied slyly.
Jay looked confused, but didn't say anything. The fifteen people exited the base and walked down the polluted streets of Sector 30.
Alex sidled up next to Steve. "Thanks for not leaving me down there," she said.
"You would've done the same for me," Steve replied.
Suddenly, Ruby came between them. "Who's this?" she asked.
"Ruby, this is Alex, my best friend from when we were kids. Alex, ths is my girlfriend, Ruby," Steve introduced.
Ruby put her arms around Steve as they walked, and Alex slowly drifted away.
They found four horses tied to a post. The grey of dawn lit everything up.
"We should've brought more horses," Jay commented.
