Chapter 39

Ruby's Point of View

The moment Ruby saw Alex talking to Steve, she knew Alex had a thing for her guy.

Ruby's guy.

And she wasn't gonna let that happen.

Ruby couldn't believe that even though Steve told her he has a girlfriend, she still had the nerve to ask if she could share a house with him.

As if Ruby would let that happen.

Anyway, it was the morning after they saved the prisoners and Steve. Ruby had just gotten her job, which was Housecleaning. She swore she got that at least once a week. This job dispenser was sexist.

Ruby started to the storage building, where they kept the cleaning supplies, when she spotted Alex bothering Steve and Jay.

The boys had iron picks, and the dogs were going with them, so that meant they were going down in the mine. Alex didn't have a job, since she just got there, so she could go with them if she wanted to.

But Ruby wouldn't let that happen.

"Hey Alex! Wanna come help me clean?" she yelled.

Alex hesitated. "Oh...sure!" she finally said, and jogged over to Ruby.

The boys and the dogs went down into the mine. "I've always wanted another girl to have girl chat with," Ruby said sweetly, even though this wasn't true.

"What about the girl with the long red hair?" Alex asked.

"Kirai? We're not really good friends," Ruby said, even though Kirai was one of her best girl friends.

"Okay. So where do we start?"

Ruby and Alex spent the entire day cleaning houses. They talked about girl stuff most of the time.

While they were cleaning the house that Louis' family was staying in for now, the little boy ran up to them.

"Did you get Steve back?" he asked excitedly.

"Yes we did," Ruby answered, ruffling Louis' hair. (Wait Villagers don't have hair...) Ruffling Louis' head...

"Yayyyyyyy!" Louis ran around, hyper.

The girls kept cleaning. At one point, Steve came up in the conversation.

"You're really lucky to have him," Alex said. "He's a great guy."

"Yeah, he really is," Ruby replied. "So you two were best friends?"

Alex's face darkened. "Yes. We were neighbors. Then Mojang came and killed everyone but us. We were on the run for weeks, then they captured me. I was transferred to Jeb's place for some reason."

"Oh. I'm sorry," Ruby said. For some reason the only thing that stuck in her mind was that Alex and Steve were alone together. For weeks.

"Yeah, it's fine," Alex said, waving it away.

They were polishing the windows of Lee and Dee's, the two female Minecraftian twins the same age as Ruby, house. The two girls were probably out doing some other job.

Suddenly, Ruby heard a beep coming from Alex. She looked at her.

Alex looked surprised for a second, then said, "Oh. It's my phone." But she didn't check it.

Ruby nodded, but she couldn't help but remember Alex saying she had no items on her, since Jeb took them all. And she doubted they would let her keep her phone with her in the jail.

Alex looked around nervously as another beep sounded from her "phone".

"I'm gonna go get some food," she said quickly. "I'll be right back."

"Okay..." Ruby said. Alex left in a hurry.

She was a very suspicious girl.

Ruby watched a fourteen year old boy dressed in all black exiting the mine. It was one of the prisoners they had rescued.

Finished with the windows, Ruby walked outside. Godhand, the guy a few years older than Ruby who liked to use potions, was fixing a hole in the house opposite Lee and Dee's.

The kid in black walked between the two of them. Ruby stopped him.

"Hey kid," she said. "Did you see Steve and Jay down there?"

The kid laughed for some reason. "Sure did."

"Okay, good." Ruby sighed in relief. It was nice to know her boyfriend and best friend were okay.

"Although I wouldn't go down there if I were you," the kid continued.

"Why not?" Ruby asked.

"I heard lots of shouting and scuttling while I was leaving," the kid explained.

"That's not good," Ruby said, starting to get worried. "I should go check on them."

"I don't think you should," the kid said mysteriously.

"Why not?!" Ruby asked, exasperated.

"While I was leaving, I saw a Nether portal in the common cavern," the kid said. "It wasn't activated, but it wasn't there when I first entered the place."

That was all Ruby needed to hear. She ran off to the mine entrance. When she got there, she turned around.

Godhand had followed her. He had heard the whole conversation, since he was right next to them.

"Come to help?" Ruby asked.

"Of course," he answered in some sort of accent.

Alex ran up behind them. "I'm back!" she announced. "What's going on?"

Ruby briefly explained the situation. When she heard the part about the shouts and scuttles, she looked briefly confused, but then changed to horror. But there was something in her eyes Ruby couldn't quite make out.

The three of them ran down the staircase and into the cavern. Just before they entered the cavern, they heard two voices yell, "ATTACK!"

That wasn't good.

They charged into the cavern to see Steve, Jay, and the dogs cornered near the lava pit.

By a bunch of Silverfish and Cave Spiders in iron helmets.

Also, a Cave Spider and Silverfish with gold helmets were standing near a Nether portal with a blue center. Jean was there, too. No one had noticed Ruby, Alex, and Godhand yet.

"What should we do?" Alex whispered.

Before Ruby could say anything, Godhand got out a splash potion and said, "I got it."

He aimed high into the air and threw it.

It landed with a crash on the boys and dogs.

"Fire resistance," Godhand answered Ruby's unasked question.

Steve, Jay and the dogs seemed to know what to do. They jumped into the lava pit and swam to the far end, so the Silverfish and Cave Spiders couldn't reach them.

Most of them fell and burned in the lava. Jean noticed and yelled at the gold helmeted Silverfish and Cave Spider. They protested, but then Jean yelled, "RETREAT!"

The iron helmeted monsters returned to the portal. Jean said something again that sounded like "Told you it was unauthorized".

They all left. Steve, Jay, and the dogs swam back to the stone floor.

Steve embraced Ruby. "Thank you," he said.

Ruby hugged back. "No problem. I'm used to rescuing you by now."

Steve stuck out his tongue jokingly. Jay and Godhand were talking, and Alex was petting and feeding the dogs. Ruby noticed something.

The pork in her pocket looked cold, like it had been there for at least a few hours.

But hadn't Alex gone to get food earlier?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Who's more suspicious? Todd or Alex? I can't decide. I love all the characters and so many of them are gonna die but oh well.
