Chapter 1
"Take that, SootClan intruder!"
Sunkit launched herself with a pounce, her golden-tabby pelt fluffed with excitement. She landed squarely on Nectarkit's back with a triumphant yowl as they tumbled together across the thick bedding of petals and moss. The sweet scent of crushed apple rose around them.
Nectarkit let out a fierce mrrow of laughter and bucked hard, sending Sunkit rolling into a pile of fluttering crimson and gold leaves that had drifted in from the hawthorn trees. "Not if I shred you first, bee-brain!"
Petalkit watched from the nursery entrance, her long whiskers twitching with amusement. "You two are going to scare all the prey between here and the elderberry patch." she mewed softly, rasping her tongue across her paw and dragging it over her fur.
Leaf-fall had painted BloomClan's camp in shades of amber and russet, and the flowering elder, and apple trees still held many of their blossoms, but now they mingled with drifting leaves that spiraled down like drifting snow whenever the wind stirred. The camp smelled of ripe fruit, and the air carried a sharper bite that made the kits fur fluff up.
Necarkit puffed up her chest and landed just a few tail-lengths from her sister. "I'm going to be the greatest warrior BloomClan has ever seen!" she declared. "I'll chase SootClan all the way back to their stinky forests!"
Laying beneath the nursery, guarded by a heavy blossom-heavy apple tree, Marigoldheart looked up. "That's quite enough battle talk for one morning," she meowed, her eyes shining with amusement at the two sisters. "Save your strength for when you're actually apprentices. And being a warrior is not just about hunting or fighting, my love."
Sunkit's ears flicked. She knew her mother was right, but the stories the elders told made her paws itch with energy. She and her sisters had only been alive for a couple of moons, yet Sunkit already wanted to feel alive, to feel the earth beneath her paws and her heart pounding with the rush of defending her territory. But she also knew how much more she needed to wait before her dreams could become a reality.
The camp buzzed as the day began with the thrill of a peaceful morning. Dandelionfall and Honeypaw were sorting through the fresh-kill pile, sprinkling mint to keep the flies away. Nearby, Larkbreeze and Poppycloud were deep in conversation, the reddish-brown she-cat's tail curling around her paws as she spoke with flickering excitement, while a white she-cat - who Sunkit presumed was Daisypetal - approached with a mouse dangling from her jaw, her expression equally as amused.
Sunkit snapped out of her own trance when Nectarkit appeared once more, swiping a paw across head, making her collapse to the ground with a squeak. "Hey, that's not fair!" She growled, a small flicker of pain blooming across her cheek.
"A future leader has to be prepared for everything," Nectarkit boasted. "And i never lose! When I'm an apprentice, my mentor will teach me moves no cat has ever seen!"
"Come on, Petalkit!" Sunkit called, crouching low, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "You can be the Healer taking care of the brave warriors after we defeat the enemy patrol!"
Petalkit tilted her head and gently batted at a drifting leaf. "Only if you stop pretending to be hurt every time you lose!" she teased.
Sunkit frowned immediately, her tail sitting upright. "You try being hit by our 'eldest sister' over here," Her muzzle pointed towards Nectarkit's darker pelt, seemingly scanning the clearing to sense for the next opportunity to pounce. "She's over twice the size of us!"
The three sisters wrestled and rolled again, their playful squeaks and growls filling the nursery. Sunkit felt a fierce surge of love for them. They were so different, yet they fit together perfectly, like petals on the same flower. It made her feel like despite the future being so uncertain, that she would face it together, with her sisters.
A sudden commotion at the camp entrance made all three kits freeze mid-tumble.
Thorn branches rustled as a patrol pushed through. Oakshade led the way, his broad-shouldered dark brown frame tense and with his green eyes narrowed. Behind him came Beewhisker, limping slightly, his yellow-tabby pelt streaked with dirt. Amberclaw followed, her shilouette bristling and her green eyes flashing with anger. Butterflyleap and Shrewstrike brought up the rear, both looking ruffled. The latter's call rang through the clearing with a desperate yowl.
"Blossomstar! Where are you?"
Blossomstar emerged at once from beneath his den, honeysuckle vines brushing his sleek cream-and-white pelt. "What happened?" he demanded, leaping down to meet them.
Sunkit crept forward, peeking out from the nursery with her sisters pressed close beside her. The whole camp began to gather, ears pricked and tails twitching.
"SootClan crossed the eastern border... again," Oakshade meowed roughly. "They claimed the Fallen Oak belonged to them once more. We were outnumbered, they brought enough numbers to assume they were looking for a skirmish."
"Oh, they'll be. What a bunch of foxhearts!"
"Shush, Nectarkit!" Marigoldheart shot a stern glance at the molly, her feathery tail wrapping around her kits protectively. "I did not raise you to speak that way!" Sunkit buried herself on her mother's tail, hiding the snort behind the mass of fur.
Shrewstrike's mouth curled with a snarl. "As if any of us would be willing to hunt in their dead forests," She hissed, her longer tail lashing from side-to-side. "For what, mice that tastes like ash and smoke?"
"They were deep in our territory!" Amberclaw hissed, tail lashing. "We scented them well past the hawthorn line where their territory starts. They didn't waste a moment, and drove us back with claws unsheathed. Beewhisker took a nasty bite to his shoulder."
"Nothing Cloverleaf can't fix," Beewhisker grunted as Butterflyleap helped him rest his body against her tortoiseshell pelt. "But tensions are rising faster than the river in newleaf. SootClan is hungry and bold."
Crouching low with her ears pinned flat against her skull, Amberclaw let out a low, menacing growl. "You know what to do, Blossomstar. We need to send a patrol to retaliate. I'll organize it now, make sure we claw that smug look off their faces---"
Blossomstar glanced around his clanmates, nerviously looking for their approval before he narrowed his green gaze and puffed his chest up. "That's enough!" He roared. "This is not a battle we will be fighting. Not today."
BloomClan's camp only rose in volume, murmurs rising around the camp's walls. Marigoldheart flicked her ears anxiously. From the elders' den, tucked in its sheltered hawthorn roots near the still pool, Applefall's voice carried on the breeze. "Typical SootClan. They have always been prickly when prey runs scarce."
"But---"
"If you have anything to say, bring it to my den!"
"Yes, Blossomstar," The pale cream tabby lowered her head with shame, burning with rage, and stalked off past the leader and the Petalbranch. That's when Sunkit glanced back at her own sisters with a mixture of thrill and awe at the scene they had witnessed. She suddenly felt that the world outside of the nursery was far bigger and more dangerous than she had ever played in her games with her littermates.
Nectarkit's amber eyes gleamed with excitement. "When we're apprentices, we'll show SootClan what BloomClan warriors can do!"
"As long as we stay together..." Petalkit pressed closer to her sisters, quiet but steady, her voice merely a whisper.
Sunkit nodded fiercely, though her small heart beat faster. Somewhere in the distance, a patrol yowled a challenge to the wind. Leaf-fall had truly arrived, and with it, the first shadows casting chaos over BloomClan.
