Chapter 2

Moving forward a few thousand years, it was two weeks until my fourteenth birthday. I was not very excited about the Change or the war I would have to take a part in.

I sat up on my feather bed with it's colourful quilts. I stared out the window and gave a big sigh, I looked down at the book in my lap. My long, straight, strawberry hair fell in front of my face, I brushed it away with my cold fingertips.

I was reading a book my five times great grandmother had written, it was about the two kings who started the war.

My giant, black dog sensed my sadness and placed his head on my lap. "Good boy, Charlie," I said to him. Charlie began to wag his tail rapidly. He was getting really excited, he lifted his muzzle from my lap and started barking. He jumped a couple times while spinning in circles.

I placed my book on the bed and stood up. Charlie jumped on me, pushing me back onto the bed. "No! Down!" I yelled and he put his tail between his legs.

"How about a walk?" I placed my hand on his soft head. Charlie barked in reply.

I got out of my silk nightdress and changed into warm clothes. My mother's white cloak reached mid-calf.

As I reached the front door I heard my mother say, "Khass where are you going?" she has the sweetest voice, it's like a song.

"I'm walking Charlie," I said, my voice not even close to as sweet and velvety as my mother's.

"Ok. Don't go to far past the town's gates." She ran her fingers through her red hair.

"I wouldn't dream of it."

I said goodbye and left my mother behind to finish her... Whatever she was doing.

My house was one of the nicest ones you could get, you only get such a nice house if you're close to the queen. Well lucky for us, my father is part of the royal guard.

I walked down to our gate, snow falling gently all around me as if I were in a snow globe. I opened the gates, slipped out the small opening and locked them again.

As I walked down the streets I stared at my feet, only paying attention to turns that I saw out of the corner of my eye.

"Oh! Sorry!" I apologized to the person I had just run into. I looked up to see a boy about my age, and surprisingly I didn't recognize him.

"Hey, you're Khass right? Khass Jata?" He had a wonderfully handsome face, frightfully bright violet eyes, and shaggy brown hair, this boy was only a little taller than me.

"Yeah, that's me," I replied nervously and tucked my hair behind my ears.

"Cool, I've heard a lot about you."

Charlie looked at the two of us and jumped on the boy. He was almost knocked to the ground but he caught himself.

"Charlie!" I yelled at him. Charlie hobbled away from the boy but was happy again when the boy pet his head.

"I'm alright," the boy said.

"I-I didn't catch your name," I stuttered.

"Nawe Seele."

"Um, nice name?" I said but it sounded more like a question.

"Thank you," he stopped petting Charlie to brush off the snow, "your's is a wonderful name too." I blushed and stared at his beautiful face.

Charlie barked and it caused me to snap back to reality. "I have to finish my walk with Charlie."

"Would you mind if I came along?" Nawe rocked on his heels and held his hands behind his back.

"Uh, sure." I honestly don't know how to respond to anything.

We walked in silence for a while. I was at Nawe's left side, that's when I noticed he had already Changed. Upon his left cheek was a golden arrow marking, which obviously means he's an archer.

Everything was silent except for the sound of our boots and Charlie's claws on the cobblestone. I decided to break the silence.

"So, you're an archer?" I asked.

"Yup," was all he answered.

"Shouldn't you be fighting in the war?" I asked, a little confused.

"No, I'm still in training and right now is my break."

"I don't want to fight."

"Neither do I."

I thought of how terrible it would be to fight in the battlefield. I shivered at my thoughts.

"Are you cold?" Nawe asked.

"No, I was just thinking about being in the battle. You never know if you'll live or not."

"Yes, it can be extremely scary. Even training is frightening."

I was wide-eyed. "I wonder what I'll be after the Change."

"You never know, I think archer would suit you."

We continued to walk in silence, Charlie followed us. I stared at all the small houses and the one that I lived in before my father was a part of the royal guard.

"Do want to have lunch with me?"

What?! Are you crazy?! We JUST met! I thought.

"Uh... Sure."

"Great. My house isn't far."

▪️▫️▪️▫️

There are lots of crazy people, Nawe is one of them. I hope you enjoy, maybe next I'll write my theory about freshwater Dolphins, comment and vote if you'd like that.
