Chapter 3
"Rick, I'm so sorry, I never meant to hurt you! It was a mistake. A huge, stupid mistake. I just felt so lonely, you've been so distant and working so much, I needed something, anything...I just chose the wrong thing. Please forgive me," Lori begged and pleaded with her husband.
It had been two days since Rick had discovered that Lori had cheated on him. He had finally plucked up the courage to see her and try and find out the truth, not only that but he was starting to believe he had outstayed his welcome at the Walsh household, despite their insistence that it was okay for him to stay.
Rick shook his head and sighed as he looked away from his wife. "So you run to the next man that gives you the slightest bit of attention and expect me to be okay with it? You're essentially blaming me for your infidelity. How long has it been happening? Who with? How many times? I need answers Lori!"
She looked away and stepped back, wiping the never ending tears from her cheeks. "A few months, the same man, I-I don't know how many times."
Rick scoffed. "So it was an affair, a full blown affair," he laughed, but he didn't find any of it funny. "Where was Carl while you were being a whore?" He snapped. "Where was our son?"
"Rick-" she began, but he cut her off.
"Where the hell was our son?" He shouted, louder than she had ever heard him shout before.
She sobbed, "usually at school, o-or with my Mum, but mostly Gabriella."
"So you purposely send him away f-for this?" He asked waving his arms around. "In our bed!"
"I'm sorry.." She said and began to cry.
Rick scoffed and picked up the bags he had packed before she had returned home to speak to him. "Don't bother with the fake tears Lori. You're not sorry, you don't care. You're crying because you got caught, because the truth is out. You disgust me."
Rick attempted to leave with his bags in hand, but Lori grabbed his arms and tried to stop him, pulling at his clothes while begging and pleading.
"No please don't leave. Don't leave me, please Rick, please. I won't do it again, please don't leave me," she pleaded, but Rick shrugged her hands from his arms and she collapsed on the floor in a flood of tears.
He shook his head in disappointment, disgust and anger. "It's over, Lori. I can't forgive this. I wouldn't ever be able to trust you again. I'm going to file for divorce, I will come and see Carl at every opportunity I have and as soon as I have a place to live we will arrange a proper schedule," Rick said calmly.
"But...but I love you. Please don't leave me." She begged.
She looked down ashamed, as Rick stared at her.
"I'm going to stay at Shane's until I find somewhere to live, don't contact me unless it's about Carl or the divorce," he said walking out of the house.
"S-Shane?" She questioned as she got off her knees and chased after him out of the door and towards his car. "Y-you can't."
"And whys that?" He asked, as he opened the trunk and threw his belongings inside.
Her mouth opened and closed but no sound came out, she jumped slightly as Rick slammed the trunk shut.
"Exactly, you have no reason. I'll leave you to explain to Carl what's happening. Please tell him I will pick him up from school and bring him back home after dinner. Me and him can have a proper chat tomorrow evening," he huffed, "I'll even take the time off work," he said bitterly before getting into the drivers side of his car and starting the engine.
He could hear her crying as he began to drive away, and was glad when he could no longer hear or see her. Now that he was finally alone he let the tears fall. He wasn't sure how he had expected the conversation to go, but apart of him had hoped she would have an explanation for what he saw, but instead she admitted it. She was a cheat, a liar, it was unforgivable. He couldn't believe she would do that too him. They had been together for so long, he thought they were happy, but obviously he had been wrong. He wondered if it was his fault like she claimed. Did he work too much? Did he not pay her enough attention?
The questions continued to whirl through his mind, but the one that appeared the most was - who did she cheat on him with?
They lived in a small town where everyone knew everyone and no ones business was private, so if it was anyone from their area they would've known who he was, who Lori was, the fact they were married and had a child. It just made it harder to deal with, that it could potentially be someone he knew.
Rick continued his drive to Shane and Gabriellas' house forcing the tears and anger away. Upon parking in their driveway he saw the lights on and also saw the pair shouting at each other through the lounge window. He knew they were having troubles. They argued constantly, Shane was always disappearing at all times of day and returning late at night.
"Probably be sleeping in my car," Rick mumbled to himself as he cautiously approached the house with his bags in hand.
He rang the doorbell and the voices instantly silence. The lock clicked and the door swung open revealing Gabriella. She was a lovely women in her early thirty, she had silky black hair and beautifully tanned skin. Rick had found it difficult to talk to her the last few days. He had never been overly close with her. She was Loris best friend and his best friends wife, but now he struggled with constantly wondering if maybe she knew all along that Lori had cheated, but it was evident that she was far too nice and far too caring to have let that happen without telling him.
"Hey Rick, I'm guessing it didn't go so well?" She asked as she opened the door wider to let him in, her eyes briefly wondering over the bags he held in his hands.
"Not really," he mumbled as he walked past her and placed his bags down by the door. "She admitted to it. She told me everything," he announced as he caught glimpse of Shane stepping into the entrance way.
Shane looked on shocked, "she admitted it. Did she say who with then?"
Rick shook his head, "no, it's the only thing she wouldn't tell me. It's been happening for months and she's just been palming Carl off to make it happen," he turned his attention to Gabriella, "I'm sorry, Gabby, it seems she used you often enough to babysit Carl while she did...that."
"That's awful, Rick. I'm sorry, I really didn't know. I love spending time with Carl, so never questioned it. You know I would have told you if I knew," Gabby looked disappointed and annoyed at herself.
Rick placed his hand on her shoulder and rubbed ever so slightly. "I know, I believe you. It's just difficult to process. Are you sure I'm still okay to stay for a while? It's just until I find an apartment or a house or something."
"Yes, of course it is!" Gabriella said enthusiastically. "Stay as long as you need." She smiled. "I'll make dinner, okay. Make yourself at home."
As she walked away Shane rolled her eyes making Rick raise his eyebrow. "What's wrong?" He asked as the two man sat down on the couch.
Shane sighed. "Nothing, just constant arguing, you know. Women are never happy, but never mind that. You sure you're okay, man? Did she really not say who it was?"
Rick shook his head. "No, I have no idea. I don't think I want to know."
Shane's phone alerted him of a text message. He read it and quickly pushed his phone into his pocket. "I have to go," he called out to the kitchen. "Work," he finished shortly.
Gabriella appeared in the doorway, now wearing an apron. "Really? Again? All you ever do is work," she complained.
Shane sighed and rolled his eyes. "I'll be back in the morning, Gabs," he turned to look at Rick. "See, never happy."
Shane walked off before anyone had the chance to say anything more and left the house, slamming the door behind him.
"I give up," Gabriella announce in frustrating. "I really give up."
