IF
Let me just say
(Yes I started with a cliché)
If there was love enough
Between the two of us
If there was love enough- we'd not
Exist in two books
(And their respective films)
We'd simply easily
Be able to seek out / sustain / detain / arraign
Our presence in the other as they do
Those fantastical creatures- far nobler than
The both of us
Let alone could we explain
How I wake
When you type a greeting to a mute and in-sleep-mode screen
Something simple / greeting / eating / meeting
Unheard by sleeping me- unseen
Yet rousing me from slumber as though- as though
You gently reached and shook my shoulder
If there was love enough
Between the two of us
We would be real- busted out of pages
Cut out of celluloid reel
Reaching beyond the edges of the screen
We'd be free / flowing / knowing / showing
Flesh torched and tongues entwined
And coffee shared in mutual reverie-
If there was you and there was we
Let alone could we explain
How I know
When you type a single word - sometimes one letter -
That your world is wrong and your mind is worn
And your heart is heavy with contention / tension / incomprehension
Unknown by me - untold by you -
Yet telling you in turn "It's fine," as though- as though
I seem to know your everything)
If there was love enough
Between the two of us
We would be under one familial roof-
Or at the very least
Camped nearby
Close enough to remove fear / enfold / unfold / behold
Protect from every holocaust-
Stand to
At every chance- stand to for love
Let alone could we explain
How you know
To write in my voice and to speak through me
To be- at every gathering
Staring through mine eyes
Our minds assessing / processing / possessing
(And later tapping keys
As though your hands are pressing over mine
Writing together our new history)
If there was love enough
It would be exactly like this
(Between the two of us)
