~ Chapter One ~
To say it was a good day would be an understatement. I was walking down my local town street when I came across a flyer posted by the Kent family. It sated that they needed a full time nanny to take care of their son. To be able to work with them would only be a miracle that only a few selected people would be able to say they've achieved it. Despite the rumors that Mrs Kent's past affairs is the result of their four year old son Kingston, I'd be thrilled to work with them.
You see, the Kent's are the most respected and definitely one of the most influential families here in New York. Mrs Amy Kent runs a very successful fashion house in Central New York while Mr Brandon Kent is the soon to be CEO of Kent Industries. With two business moguls under one roof with different schedules, I wouldn't be surprised if they couldn't watch over their son properly. The poor kid must have gone through a round of nannies.
A week later I decided to apply for the job. It was a rash decision but imagine how many more jobs this could open up for me if I would've said I worked with the Kent's. The flyer clearly stated that after applying I would have to wait a week to get a response and if I didn't then the job be damned. I got a reply early Thursday morning while I was going through my emails. It didn't state much but what was clear was that I would have to meet with the couple and their son this afternoon in their penthouse situated in Mr Kent's company building.
I finished up with my day working as a waitress in Digs Diner and bustled onto the busy New York streets. I hung my bright red coat just off my shoulder and straightened my black pencil skirt as well as my matching black sheer top. Extra points of approval, I went all out to Uptown New York just to get a pair of red heels designed by none other than Mrs K herself. If I don't get the job at least I walk out stylish.
Embracing the cool air, I pushed open the company doors and was welcomed with the lively buzz of workers communicating through ear pieces and drivers and staff scattered all over the lobby. The desks were a matte black modern feel while the walls were a gorgeous spotless white. I muscled up a smile and made my way to the first reception desk I saw.
"Hi, I'm Michelle." I greeted, peering down at the lady who was typing furiously at her laptop. She looked up at me and flashed a smile, like one of those forced flight attendants smile.
"Hello Michelle. I'm Sarah, the receptionist here at Kent Industries. Do you have a scheduled meeting?" I cringed slightly. Her voiced sounded so poised and rehearsed that it hurt.
I shook my head, letting my long brown hair fall over my shoulders. "Actually I have a meeting with Mr and Mrs Kent. It's about a job I applied for, taking care of their son."
"Ah yes, the nanny job. I'll just get Mr Kent's secretary to buzz you up." Sarah picked up a landline and dialed a few numbers before she smiled politely and said his secretary will only be a few minutes.
To make time pass by I tapped my finger impatiently on the marble high station that blocked me and Sarah's view from each other. If I do get the job I can only imagine the new things I would discover about this family that the media doesn't know. Kingston may only be a blood related son to one of his parents and I would be the one to know that. Although I think that something in Amy's contract will limit my contact with the Media and paparazzi.
I still do wonder why so much nannies have fled from their household. I imagine Kingston to be a lovely four year old. He just needs younger company, all his other nannies were above the age of fifty. I'm just at the tender age of nineteen. He needs someone young to liven him up a bit.
"Keep tapping your finger and you just might break a nail."
I snapped my head up at the direction of the voice. A man stood before me in a black suit and a white dress shirt beneath, he matched it off with a red tie. Definitely the secretary. I stared him up and down. He had blond hair and chiseling icy blue eyes. His jawline looked like it was carved by God himself. I could give him a prefect ten for his 6ft build which he looked very proud of.
"Take a picture Red. It might last longer." He smirked noticing how I was checking him out.
"Yeah because you're looks definitely aren't going to last as long as your ego." I scoffed rolling my eyes.
He made this really loud sizzling noise with his mouth. "Feisty, I like it." I raised my eyebrows at him and he just chuckled, turning around to place his hand loosely on my waist, leading me away from the reception. "What's your name Red?"
"Why do you keep calling me Red?" I groaned folding my arms across my chest.
"Because," He said. "Your red coat reminds me of Little Red riding hood. You know, people will think we're dating."
"And why is that?" I haven't even known the guy for a minute and he's already giving me nicknames.
He simply pointed to my coat and my shoes. I raised an eyebrow quizzically and he sighed stirring me towards the elevator. "My tie is red, your shoes and coat are red. We're coordinating, basically couple goals in my opinion."
"Look, I know you like me and all but I doubt people will think we're together." I smirked. "I don't even know your name."
"Matt Preston." He held his hand out to me.
"I'm Michelle Brooks." I gaped at him as I shook his hand cowardly.
He's Matt Preston. Freaking Matt Preston. Brandon Kent's best friend. Also not to mention business entrepreneur and all time playboy. How did I not recognize him? The same childish blue eyes and sly grin that I always see in magazines. I can't believe I didn't see the match. Talk about mental face palm moment.
I let Matt lead the rest of the way. We narrowed into an empty corridor with a velvet red carpet and burgundy walls. There was an elevator at the end of the corridor, which in sure will lead to the penthouse. I kept meek and silent the way to the elevator, I would've from the start if I knew who Matt was.
"After you." He said inviting me in the grand elevator that was all gold. We stepped in and he hit the 40th floor button. "So why are you here again?" He asked studying me up and down.
"I'm applying to be Kingston's nanny." I said with a curt smile.
"No offense but aren't you too young to be a nanny?" He chuckled lightly, scratching the back of his hair nervously.
I sighed incredulously, I guess this will be the most asked question of the day. "I don't know what age you expect a nanny to be but I'm 19. I'm still pretty young and energetic so I'll be able to keep up with Kingston."
"I wish you luck Red."
My lips curled up into a silent smile. I guess he's not giving up on the name Red. We were half way up the building so I estimated around another minute in the golden elevator.
I doubt it's real gold though. I get that they're rich but I don't think they're dumb enough to make an elevator of gold.
"Matt," He turned to me as if to say yes. "How old are you?"
He chuckled. A deep and reverberating sound that made him seem younger than his years. Anything would make Matt younger than his years. The way he smiled at the Paparazzi. The way he made light hearted jokes with everyone. The way he's a powerful entrepreneur but he doesn't hold that title to be higher than anyone. Heck, even the way he flirts any chance he can get. All these I hope keep him young.
"I'm 24." He said. He tried to hold in a laughter when he saw the flabbergasted look on my face but it didn't work. "Why do you look so shocked?"
I shook my head. "It's just, you look really young and you're so successful for a guy your age."
The elevator came to a smooth stop and the doors flung open. Yet again, I let Matt lead the way. I noticed there were only two doors in the corridor. One at the south end and another at the north end. Seeing as Matt was leading me to the north end, I'm guessing that's where their penthouse is.
Matt told me to just head on right in and with a kiss on my cheek he was gone. I laughed when he shot me a wink as he slid into the elevator. He's such a womanizer.
I was told to walk right in so with a few deep breaths I pushed the door open.
To say the penthouse was big was an understatement. It's gigantic. I stepped in and my heels were muffled with the soft white carpet beneath my feet. The living room was massive with a large white sofa, decorated with marble black cushions and a glass table in the middle. The TV right in front of the glass table might as well have been a bloody cinema screen. The kitchen had a marble countertop and state of the art equipments. I didn't dare walk farther than the living room and kitchen, what kind of impression will I give my employers if I'm just going around their house without invite.
"Wait a second. Let me just see who walked in the house." A sweet cheery like voice came from upstairs. I soon saw Mrs Amy Kent coming down the glass stairs in a pink suit and velvet black heels.
She had the makings of a model more so than a fashion designer. With her perfectly sun tanned skin and light blonde hair that highlighted the curve of her face. She had wandering big blue eyes and had the average model height.
"Good Afternoon Mrs Kent." I smiled at her descendant. "I'm Michelle Brooks and I'm here after the approval of the nanny job."
"Ah yes. Come sit and we can discuss the conditions." I followed her into the white living room I had previously gawked at and we took a seat next to each other, ready to discuss the conditions. "So as you can see I need a nanny for my son Kingston. I'll be away at the fashion house or on a trip and on some days I don't get back till late. I know you're 19, and all his other nannies were quite old but I hope you'd be able to take good care of my baby boy. He's not allowed to have any contact with salmon, it causes him an allergic reaction. He's required to have a nap at around 1pm after you've played with him. And make sure he only gets up to 40 minutes of TV time a day."
I nodded furiously at all her words, doesn't seem like a tough task. "On the flyer it states I would have to live here?"
"Yes." She nodded. "We'll give you access to our company towers and my fashion house in case you need to contact us. And we'll give you your first payment of a million after six months of work. Are you alright to move in tomorrow?"
I couldn't help but grin. "Yeah I can move in and start work tomorrow. Would you mind if I go see Kingston now?"
"Oh yes sure." She said standing up. "He's just in his fathers study."
I followed behind her as we headed up the glass stairs to her husbands office. "I see your wearing my latest shoe design?" Amy asked pointing to my red pumps.
"Yes, I admire your work."
"I can tell you'll be very good to my son." She laughed.
We reached the first door at the end of the spiral staircase. It had a gold plaque on it saying 'Brandon Kent'. Amy pushed the door open to reveal a white room similar to the reception, there was a marble black desk in the middle of the room with black bookshelves on opposite ends of the room. My gaze directed to the two figures wrestling on the floor. A young man in a suit similar to Matts on top of a squirming boy in broad shorts and a plain white shirt. I couldn't help but smile.
Amy let out a low laugh and this spring the two boys apart. The man noticed my presence and adjusted his suite and planted a kiss on Amy's cheek. The little boy just stared at me with his curious big blue eyes. The same curiosity the man held with his chocolate brown eyes.
"I'm Michelle Brooks." I said, holding my hand out to the man whom I presume is the co-creator of the young boy who I'm guessing is Kingston.
"Brandon Kent." He said, leaning over his wife to accept my hand. I could still tell he was curious about me. "Don't bother calling me Mr Kent."
I averted my gaze to Kingston. "Who's this little man over here." I said crouching down to his level.
"I'm not little." He pouted, folding his arms across his chest.
I chuckled and ruffled his light blonde hair. "What's your name, big boy? I'm Michelle."
"Kingston." He flashed a toothy grin at the mention of me calling him a big boy instead of little guy.
"Can I call you King?" I asked.
"Yeah sure. Nobody but dad ever calls me King but I guess you can join in too." I've come to the conclusion that this brooding four year old was wise beyond his age.
"Kingston, this is your new nanny." His mother said giving him a weary look. "Better treat her right."
King rolled his eyes as if he's heard that statement too many times in his short lifetime. "I promise I'm going to be nice to Michelle."
"You better." Amy turned to whisper something in Brandon's ear. He nodded. She flashed me a smile before walking out of the room.
"Michelle, how old are you?" Brandon asked. I tore my eyes off King for a second to look at his handsome father. Mr Kent was completely different to his son. He had dark brown hair and chocolate hazel eyes that held intensity and curiously at the same time. He had the same awesome jawline that Matt had but it was different with him...he was more buff and defined I could tell from the way his suit molded his body. He was also a few inches taller than Matt for sure. The only personality difference between them is that Matt is charming while Brandon is more serious and business like.
"I'm 19." I said. "And you?"
"I'm 23."
"I'm four!"
I laughed at King's attentiveness and the way he held up four fingers in both our faces. He's sure going to be a heartbreaker one day.
"So I'm sure Amy has talked through all the conditions with you." Brandon sighed running his hand through his hair. "I'll let you go home now, you should probably start packing."
"Yeah I should." I nodded in agreement. "I'll see you tomorrow King." I waved at the cute child I've grown fond of in the short time I've known him.
"See you later, Shelly." He waved. I see he's already given me his own nickname.
I was about to leave when Brandon's words stopped me. "I'll be at home tomorrow if you need help moving in."
"Thanks. Bye Brandon."
I left the building with a smile on my face. This has got to me a miracle.
