Chapter Three
"Rachel...Rachel, honey. It's time to wake up." Sarah murmured as she gently shook Rachel's arm. Rachel whined and buried her head in her pillow. Sarah chuckled softly.
"Five more minutes...please..." Rachel grumbled.
"It's eleven in the morning." Sarah laughed. "Your Uncle and I agreed this is a little too late to sleep in." Sarah said and sat down next to her on the bed. The worn mattress creaked as she did so and Rachel slowly opened her crusty eyes. Rachel began rubbing them.
"U-uncle?" She muttered as she tried to wake up. Sarah's smile began to fade.
"Yes, honey. Uncle Will and Aunt Sarah." Sarah brushed the hair out of Rachel's eyes. Rachel's removed her hands and looked at Sarah as she sat up.
"I...I'm sorry. I-I forgot." She whispered as she ducked her head. Sarah sighed deeply and placed a smile on her lips.
"You don't have to be sorry. Now come on, let's go get some breakfast in you. How does that sound?" Sarah asked as she stood and began pulling blankets off the young girl. Rachel quickly grabbed her cold feet once she felt the cool breeze of the room she was once shielded by.
"What's for breakfast?" Rachel asked as Sarah placed the blanket off to the side.
"What would you like?" She questioned with a smile. Rachel blinked in surprise.
"Me?" Rachel spoke and shook her head. "I...I couldn't ask-." Rachel paused as Sarah gave her a small look. She approached the girl and sat by her on the bed.
"Rachel. You've been through something no child should ever go through," Sarah shook her head as she grabbed her shoulders. Rachel stiffened lightly. "I have no control. Will has no control. So the least we can do for you is make you your favorite breakfast." She smiled. "We want to be here for you." She seriously addressed.
"T-thank you but..." Rachel bit her lip as she searched for the right words. Sarah frowned at her nervousness.
"You can talk to us. You shouldn't need to-."
"N-no it's not that. I trust you guys," she looked up to her Aunt. "Its just...I never was asked what I wanted. I seriously couldn't ask you." Rachel relaxed as Sarah removed her hands on her shoulders. Rachel rubbed her arm as Sarah seemed to stare into blank space. Rachel sincerely hoped she hadn't said anything wrong the more time had passed.
"Well...it seems we need to find you a favorite." Sarah said slowly coming back to Earth as she looked to Rachel.
Rachel blinked as Sarah smiled brightly.
...
Lennox reached forward and muted the TV once Sarah and Rachel headed downstairs. "She's alive!" He smiled teasingly from his place on the couch. Sarah shook her head in amusement as Rachel only looked confused. Sarah led her into the kitchen, Rachel hurrying behind her. Lennox slowly stood up and stretched before following. Lennox walked in as Rachel awkwardly stood off the side. He leaned on the doorway.
"So, Rachel, what do you like to do?" He asked as he crossed his arms. Rachel slowly looked up to Will and shifted.
"I...I don't know." She shrugged. Sarah looked over her shoulder as she opened the fridge.
"You don't know?" She inquired with raised eyebrows. She shut the fridge with a click and walked over to the counter with the milk and eggs.
"No. I didn't do much with my Mom and Dad." She rubbed her arm nervously.
Will hummed quietly in displeasure before waving a hand. He sat down at the kitchen table and waved again, gesturing for her to follow. Rachel hesitated before walking to the chair in front of her and taking a seat. Will leaned forward and clasped his hands together.
"We have plenty of things for you here. Why don't you and your Aunt go shopping? Or perhaps go with Annabelle? There's a roller skating rink in town, the movies, paintb-."
"William, don't even think about finishing that sentence." Sarah warned as she was whisking the eggs. Will cleared his throat with an amused smile.
"Yes, dear." He winked to Rachel. Rachel smiled at the silliness. "There's a book store, craft shop where you can paint and sculpt, bowling," his list continued. Rachel's gaze lowered. Will sighed. "Its okay to be unsure."
"But I haven't been to any of these places...I mean I went to the book store a few times after school but that's about it." She mumbled, feeling very lame.
"Thats okay! Because you know, you should try something new if you haven't yet. You might learn to like it." He told her. Rachel looked back to him.
"And if I don't?"
"Then you don't have to go to any of these places again." Will nodded his head.
Rachel fiddled with her fingers quietly as she mulled it over. Sarah placed a pan on the stove and looked to her niece.
"You don't have to make a decision right now. Would you like to join Annabelle and I when we go shopping later?" Sarah asked kindly. Rachel bit her lip.
"You'll be here alone if you don't. I have to go to work in two hours." Lennox said. Rachel continued to stay silent. She could handle being alone before, so why didn't she want to be now? She desperately wanted to join Sarah but she didn't know Annabelle very well. Sarah had this atmosphere Rachel felt comfortable in but Annabelle was her cousin. How do you talk to a cousin you haven't seen in years? Let alone a cousin you don't remember?
Rachel was stuck. She never had these types of decisions at her house. "Um, I'll go." She agreed feeling her foot anxiously bounce against the floor. Her heart was racing. Was this a good idea? "What are you guys shopping for?"
"Just some clothes. I've been feeling the need to pamper myself." Sarah winked. Will snorted from his place at the table.
"This is going to be a long day for you," Will patted Rachel's shoulder as he stood up and headed to the coffee dispenser. He opened the cabinet and got himself a cup out. Sarah playfully smacked her husband's shoulder.
"Mock me all you want but I do most of the work around here so I deserve it once and a while." Sarah huffed. Rachel giggled in amusement.
"What!? I just cleaned out the shed two days ago!" Will gawked as he set his mug down on the table.
"Oh, yes. Sorry dear, I completely forgot while I did your landury." Sarah placed her hand on her hip. Will began to grumble under his breath in defeat.
Rachel only snickered.
...
The ride to Annabelles college was quiet but comfortable. Sarah had full attention on the empty road and Rachel had her head leaning on the window, attention elsewhere. Her eyes watched the blurred nature go by as the little white car Sarah called, The Foxy Ford, drove quickly but calmly.
Rachel often wondered what would come now that she was to stay at her Aunts. Would it be for a while? Forever? Her heart felt cramped by the overwhelming situation. Her stomach seemed to always be full of sorrow. Rachel wasn't sure what to think. She was upset yet all she wanted was an explanation. Where did she go wrong? Why couldn't she see her Aunt Sarah and her family before? Why is her life so messed up?
Rachel didn't like being left out of the dark but now she never felt more blind than ever. She could only hope her Aunt could share some light for her. But she doubted it. Her mother never shared any light. Her mother never shared anything.
After all, she was only a kid.
"We're here," Sarah suddenly spoke. Rachel lifted her head, feeling the shift of the car she it came to a stop. Her eyes looked around as she took in the new setting. Sarah chuckled warmly.
She took in a deep breath and unbuckled.
