Chapter 33 - Familiar Faces

June realized something was wrong the moment the second person recognized her.

The first one could have been a coincidence.

The second felt suspicious.

The third was becoming statistically impossible.

By lunchtime, she had developed a theory.

The theory was simple.

Elliot had apparently been talking about her for years.

The discovery happened gradually.

A friend of his stopped to say hello.

Then another.

Then someone from university.

Then someone he used to work with.

The interactions always followed the same pattern.

Recognition.

A strange look.

Then a smile.

Sometimes laughter.

Occasionally both.

June noticed it immediately.

Elliot noticed her noticing.

Unfortunately for him, there was nothing he could do about it.

The confrontation arrived while they were standing in line for coffee.

June folded her arms.

"Elliot."

The tone made him nervous immediately.

"Yes?"

"How many people know who I am?"

Elliot stared at the menu.

A clear sign of guilt.

"Elliot."

"I'm looking at coffee."

"You don't drink coffee."

The menu suddenly became much less interesting.

For several seconds he remained silent.

June narrowed her eyes.

"Elliot."

"It's difficult to answer that question."

"Oh no."

"It depends."

"Oh no."

"On your definition of know."

June covered her face.

The woman standing behind them laughed.

Elliot looked briefly embarrassed.

A rare event.

June enjoyed it immensely.

"How many?"

"I don't know."

"You do."

"I really don't."

That answer, unfortunately, sounded genuine.

Which somehow made everything worse.

The coffee arrived.

Neither of them moved.

The conversation had become more important.

"Elliot."

"What?"

"Why?"

The question escaped before she could stop it.

Why?

Why had she appeared so often in conversations she wasn't present for?

Why did his friends react like they already knew her?

Why did everyone seem significantly less surprised by this meeting than she was?

For the first time, Elliot didn't answer immediately.

The city moved around them.

People crossed the square.

Someone nearby dropped a tray.

Life continued.

The silence stretched.

Eventually he shrugged.

"I don't know."

June stared.

"That's a terrible answer."

"I know."

"Try again."

Elliot looked down at his coffee.

Then out toward the street.

Then somewhere in between.

When he finally spoke, his voice sounded quieter.

Not sad.

Just honest.

"You were around."

The answer caught her off guard.

"What does that mean?"

Another small shrug.

The kind that suggested he wasn't entirely sure either.

"It means if something happened, I probably talked to you."

June frowned.

"No."

Elliot laughed softly.

"See?"

"What?"

"Exactly that."

"What exactly that?"

The smile widened.

"You always assume you're the center of the story."

June looked horrified.

"I do not."

"You absolutely do."

"I absolutely don't."

"You do."

"I don't."

"You do."

June pointed accusingly at him.

"Elliot."

"June."

The conversation dissolved into laughter.

As most of their arguments eventually did.

Yet the answer lingered.

You were around.

Such a strange explanation.

Such an Elliot explanation.

Vague.

Incomplete.

Probably true.

The rest of the afternoon passed easily.

They walked through the city.

Stopped at places Elliot liked.

Talked about nothing important.

For the first time in years, neither of them seemed rushed.

No deadlines.

No projects.

No screens separating one conversation from the next.

Just time.

The thing they had somehow never managed to have before.

As evening approached, they ended up meeting another group of Elliot's friends.

This time the reaction was immediate.

"Oh my God."

June froze.

The phrase never led anywhere good.

The friend pointed directly at her.

Then at Elliot.

Then back at her.

The grin appeared instantly.

"No way."

Elliot closed his eyes.

June began laughing before anyone explained.

Because suddenly she understood.

Not everything.

Not even close.

Just enough.

Enough to realize that somewhere over the last four years, she had become a recurring character in stories she'd never heard.

The realization should have felt uncomfortable.

A few years earlier, it probably would have.

Now it didn't.

Perhaps she had changed.

Perhaps growing older meant caring less about things that once felt important.

Or perhaps, after four years, the idea no longer seemed strange.

If someone had known her for that long, maybe it was natural.

Maybe.

The evening ended shortly afterward.

People said goodbye.

Plans were discussed.

Promises were made.

The city slowly shifted from afternoon into night.

As they walked back toward her hotel, June glanced at Elliot.

"You know."

"What?"

"I think your friends know more about me than some of my actual friends."

Elliot laughed.

"Probably."

"That's concerning."

"Very."

June smiled.

Then looked ahead again.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The silence felt comfortable.

Familiar.

The kind built over years.

And somewhere inside that silence, Elliot found himself thinking something he would never say aloud.

For four years, June had existed inside his stories.

For one afternoon, she had finally stepped into them.

And somehow, that felt enough.
