Purification
I head into the dollar store with my mask on, George in the car as to make sure nobody sees him as he is now. I explained to him on the way that we must be careful, and act only under masks. At this hour, if anyone sees us, bye bye alibi. I grab tape, a Halloween zombie mask sitting in the corner, forgotten and marked down, white spray paint, and and an old voice modifying toy based on a movie antagonist. On my way out, I spy a cheap, small flash drive. I'll need that later. I grab it too.
"Perfect," I smirk.
I pay for the goods, $6.75 in total, and head out to the car. I tape the voice modifier inside the mask and spray paint the exterior white before handing it to George.
"Paint's still wet," I explain, "sorry I couldn't make it cooler."
"Hey," George puts it on, "it'll get the job done."
"Be sure to replace the batteries in the voice modifying toy," I remind, "one slip and we're busted. We have to be through. Take backstreets, and avoid traffic cameras. When we purify that man, we will film a message, put it on this flash drive, have it delivered anonymously to the local news station, and you delete it off whatever you recorded it on. No trace. Understood?"
"Damn you're cautious," George, or rather, at the moment, Bleach, replies.
"You wanna take any chances?" I demand.
"I see your point," Bleach replies, "he should be in a house just down this way."
Bleach and I stop in the street a little while later in front of a sky-blue house. I crack my knuckles and walk towards it.
"Oh," Bleach explains, "it's a few houses down. I parked here to avoid suspicion."
"Dude that's smart," I smile and high five him, "you and me, I think we're gonna be friends."
"Great minds think alike," Bleach chuckles.
We begin to walk, but I realize something and stop Bleach, "hold up."
"What's wrong?" Bleach asks.
"We need a motto," I reply, "something to say to strike fear into the hearts of the impure. Any ideas?"
"Well I guess it would help with intimidation," Bleach replies, "you got any?"
"Repeat after me," Purity smirks, "and have Bleach memorize this."
"Memorize this," I demand proceeding to mimic Purity, "to commence in purification, to cleanse this world and bring salvation, to unite the world under hope and what's just, and to protect the next generation from abuse and drugs. I am Purity. You must be purified!"
"Do I say 'I am Purity?'" Bleach inquires.
"No," I reply, "you'd say Bleach. Can you memorize that?"
"Sure," Bleach smiles, "let's do this. I can't wait to make that bastard pay."
We proceed down about seven houses before reaching a house with a shriveled flowered and an unkempt yard. I examine it with disgust and walk towards it. That's where the impure are. They must be-
"Dude wrong house," Bleach explains.
"Wrong house?" I demand, "look at it! That has to be where the impure are!"
"Looks can be deceiving," Bleach explains, "those people are actually really nice. I know them. They're just at their Summer home and forgot to turn on the sprinklers. It's this next house."
One more house down is a house with rose bushes, full and beautiful, outside. A chubby man with a brown beard and balding head exits the house.
"That's our guy," Bleach cracks his knuckles.
"Wait," I demand, "we need to lure him away. We can't take him and his friends. Create a distraction."
"I got this," Bleach walks down a house, "help! Someone! Anyone! I'm under attack!"
"Why would that work?" I demand.
"He'd wanna join in," Bleach replies, "he's that sick of a bastard."
The chubby man rushes towards us with a malicious smile. Me and Bleach smile at each other, and sink into the darkness, beginning our speech.
"To commence in purification," I begin from the man's left.
"To cleanse this world and bring salvation," Bleach continues, a look of confusion and fear appearing on the man's face as he steps back.
"To unite the world under hope and what's just," I smirk as we close in.
"To protect the next generation from abuse and drugs," Bleach blocks the man's escape.
"I am Purity," I explain.
"I am Bleach," Bleach proceeds.
We both yell in synch, "you must be purified!"
We both jump the man before he can react. I go for his legs and Bleach gives him a stomp to the stomach when he's off his feet.
"We're not through with you yet," Bleach pulls the man to his feet.
I speak, but my words are not my own, it's as if Purity is speaking for me, "no, we're not. Get up lardass!"
I kick the man in the stomach and Bleach gives him a roundhouse kick to the face, breaking his nose and knocking him down.
"Please," the man begs, his voice weak and strained, "what do you want? Money? I have money. Just-"
I put my foot on his skull and begin to press down, causing the man to scream in his well deserved agony.
"Film this," I demand. Bleach nods and takes out his phone as I press down.
"How many?" Purity and I both demand.
"How many wh- augh!" I interrupt him by pressing harder.
"How many times have you beaten your daughter!?!" Bleach yells.
"I don't know what you're ta- ow! The pain! Stop! Please!" The man pleads as I keep the pressure on.
"How many!?!" We both demand.
"Once! OK? It was a one time- augh!"
"How many!?!"
"Twice! That's it I swear! Please just- oh God the pain!"
"HOW MANY!?!"
"I don't know! A lot! OK? It's just physical discipline!"
I remove my foot, "no. It's abuse and impure, and everyone will soon know what we know. Bleach, let's go."
"Wait," the man pleads, crying, "this will destroy me. Please, I'll pay you. Five thousand dollars. I beg of you, delete that footage."
"Sir," Bleach smirks, "your money is worthless to us."
"And why's that?" The man demands.
"Sir," I reply, "to abuse a child makes you impure, and we seek to purify the world."
With that we walk off. As we walk, Bleach records me offering a speech.
"Repeat after me," Purity demands.
I mimic, "let this be a warning. I am Purity, and the camera man is my ally Bleach. Say hi dude."
Bleach turns the camera around, "howdy."
He turns it back to me and I proceed, "what you have just seen is a confession from an impure man. If you abuse your children, you are impure, and shall be purified. That man in the arcade was no accident. I purified him, and I'll purify whoever I need to to help the abused children of this world. Fear us not if you are pure and good. We shall not harm you. We seek only the impure. Should you need to contact me, please use the message board in Cool Cat Waffles. I will take purification requests, and know, if you ever hear the words, 'to commence in purification, to cleanse this world and bring salvation, to unite the world under hope and what's just, and to protect the next generation from abuse and drugs. I am Purity. You must be purified!' We've come for you. There is no escape. Give up. Know that we have only the best intentions, and we seek only to protect the victims of the impure. The man you saw at the start, we purified him. We will purify any in our way. Until our next purification, we bid all who are pure, farewell. As for the impure, we will find you, and. we-"
"Will kill you all!" Purity exclaims.
I continue on my own, "will not take your lives. We seek only to protect the pure. Nothing more, but I must confess, it's very very fun to purify. Oh the joy it brings. Well, I suppose that's all we have to say. Until next time viewer."
Bleach ends the recording.
"It'll be on the news tomorrow," he explains, "you need a ride home?"
"Take me to the docks," I reply, "I'll get home from there."
"Hey," Bleach takes off his mask as we get in his car, "thanks for your help, I appreciate it."
"Anytime George," I smile, "but I gotta ask, why'd you agree to help?"
"I stand for what's right," George explains, "even if it's not the best way to do it. I was desperate."
"Does that mean you quit?" I inquire.
"Nah," George smiles, "after all, I stand by my friends."
"Friends?" I ask, smiling, "really?"
"Yeah dude," George replies, "you seem cool, but I gotta ask, you know the part where you said you derive pleasure from this? Are you, like, OK in the head?"
"Here we go again," Purity sighs.
"I mean," I sigh, "not really. I'm just, worthless. My life has no value. This gives me value. Helping people, it means I don't deserve to die and I'm not just a leech."
"Jesus I thought you just liked beating up people," George seems shocked by my answer.
"Please don't hate me," I plead, "I don't want everyone to hate me. My friends are all I have. My family hates me."
"To much information dude," Purity glares.
"Do you just wanna sleep at my place?" George offers, "I mean, I take it you don't wanna go home then."
"Gotta have an alibi," I remind, "I have to, but thanks for the offer."
"Right," George replies, "alibi. I'll have to delete that video after putting it on the flash drive huh?"
"Yeah," I smile.
"Well," George pulls into the docks, "here we are. What if I need to contact you again?"
"Dammit," I sigh, "you're right. Uhhhhhh... excuse me. Wait here."
I walk off to consult Purity.
"We should show him my face," I explain, "he's pure. He's trustworthy."
"Dude you just met this kid, and we can't trust anyone. In fact, I say he knows to much as is. This is to risky."
"He's my friend."
"For how long, a day? You can't trust anyone. You can only trust yourself. Not Morgan, not Lily, not Whitney, and not anyone else. We can't do this."
"What if we compromise? We know his face, and tell him if we go down he goes with us."
"Fine," Purity glares, "looks like that's the best I'm gonna get out of you. Do it."
I go back to George and explain, "OK, I'm gonna show you my face, but before I do know this: I know yours, so if you rat me out, you go down with me."
"Trust me," George smiles, "there's no way I'm gonna rat you out. We're on the same side."
"Alright," I smile removing my mask, "my name's Richard. I hang out here at the docks a lot so if you need me, look for me here. If I'm not here, then we're both shit outta look. Anyways, I gotta go. See ya later dude."
"See ya Richard," George smiles as we wave goodbye to one another. I get on my bike and head home, the sunrise just starting to crest over the horizon as I arrive and park my bike in the exact spot I left it. I slide into the window I left open, close it, and lie down in bed. The exhaustion hits like a truck, my entire body feels sore and my eyes grow heavy. I take off my shoes to avoid suspicion as I pass out and enter a deep slumber...
