Always Have
I'm sorry but I just read Dear Natasha and I'm in the mood.
Natasha Romanov sat outside hospital room 6A. She was still in her skin tight suit from her most recent mission. The dirt and sweat still clung to her body and hair. She would've had enough time to change and take a shower, but why should she when her partner was suffering? It would be selfish of her. If he was suffering, she would suffer with him. They were partners after all. Oh why had she been so stupid! If only she just checked to make sure everyone was out of the building before blowing it up, maybe Clint would be okay! Maybe they wouldn't have ended up in intense care. Maybe....maybe she could've saved his life. He wasn't dead....not yet. He had fallen from almost the top of the three story building slightly burned. It was a miracle he can even breathe! But if he...if he didn't make it, it would be all her fault. All. Her. Fault.
A nurse came by to tell her it was okay to come into his room. Natasha shot up and dashed to him. She didn't care who saw the tears anymore. All she cared about was her partner. She pulled the door open and frantically looked inside. The room was bright white, almost blinding. There was a little pot with a bunch of roses on a table. Little pictures hung on the walls. Natasha's eyes landed on the tiniest picture of a lake in Budapest, of all places, hanging over something that made her choke back a sob. It was Clint. His entire body covered with a blanket and machinery. IV tubes came swirling out of his arms filled with different liquids. A breathing mask cover his mouth as a machine in the back beeped faintly. The entire sight was dreadful. Natasha could barely look. But she ran over to him anyway, standing right by him.
She stood just watching. His chest heaved up and down as if his lungs couldn't get enough. His eyes kept twitching and there were little scars all over his ruggedly handsome face. Natasha grabbed his limp hand kissed his temple. "I'm so sorry Clint." She whispered. Slowly his eyes peeled open slightly. She watched the blue emerge.
His eyes found hers and as he smiled crookedly said, "Tasha..." She blushed. That was his nickname for her. She rubbed her thumb across his hand. He did it back. All they did for the rest of the day was state at each other, thanking God they could actually see one another. Once in a while Clint's eyes would start to flutter close and startle Natasha, making her squeeze his hand. He would then wake up and give her a thanking smile.
Later in the day the Avengers showed up. Everyone made jokes and laughed. They even brought presents. But Natasha always stayed by his side, holding onto him. She was like his lifeline. Natasha was afraid that if she let go, he would too. So her hand stayed firmly entwined with his. Clint whispered something in Tony's ear that she couldn't quite make out. Stark nodded and continued on with everyone else.
When the last person left, it was once again just Natasha and Clint in their own little world. He squeezed her hand and said, "Tasha...I have to...have to...tell you something." She didn't like the fact he was struggling with talking. She also didn't like it when someone says they have to tell her something. It either led in something horrible or something that Hirt her so much. But she stayed quiet and let the assassin speak. He sat himself up a bit and said, "I've been meaning to say this...for a really long time Nat. Over the years I...I have grown to be one of your most trusted friends. And I appreciate it, I really do. It's just...I...I..." He started to cough and have trouble.
Natasha hurriedly soothed him by caressing his cheek and said, "Stop, you can tell me later." But he didn't.
Instead he grabbed the hand that gingerly rubbed his face and said looking straight into her eyes, "No, it's your turn to stop and listen. Natasha for years and years I haven't had the guts to say it because I was scared you were going to reject me and I couldn't be you friend anymore. But seeing the circumstances now...it seems I can't put it off any longer."
"Please...don't..." Natasha whispered, a lump forming in her throat.
He held her hands tightly and said, "Natasha...I love you." Silence. That was what met the two spies. Small tears fell from Natasha's eyes. Clint wiped them away, waiting for her to respond. She didn't, not verbally. But Clint could see in her soft warm brown eyes that it didn't need saying. He knew just by staring and she realized it just now. Natasha laid her head on his chest, basking in his warmth and smell of him. She didn't want him to go. Not yet. Not when she just realized how much she loved him.
The door slowly opened and revealed Tony Stark followed by a priest. Natasha was confused. What were they doing here? She looked to Clint for an explanation. He sighed. "I wanted to ask you Tasha..." He took out a chain around his neck and pulled off what was attached to it and said quietly, "will you make a dead man happy and marry me?" Natasha gasped and cried even more. It was all too much. She felt sick. This was happening too fast. But she has to be strong. For her partner. She let him slip the gold band on her finger. It felt like a million pounds crushing her heart. How could she feel this way? Natasha wasn't supposed to feel like this. Sorrow and loss were alien to her. But Clint had changed her. For the better.
The priest started saying the usual things. Both spies tried to listen, but their attention caught each other and soon they were both staring wistfully in one's eyes. They did not need to say any words that will immortalize them. All they needed was each other's last longing stare and it was enough. All of them barely noticed the beeping of the heart machine growing fainter and fainter.
As the priest finished he said, "Do you, Clinton Francis Barton, take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife? To have and to hold? For rich or for poor? Till....death do you part?" He hesitated on the last sentence.
Clint nodded and said, "I do, with all my heart." He gave her a crooked smile. She gave a small one back.
The priest then said to Natasha, "Do you, Natasha Romanov, take this man-"
"Yes, of course I do. Yes." She interrupted. Natasha couldn't stand it any longer. Clint had to be hers right then and there.
The priest closed the book and said, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss you bride." Natasha and Clint looked at each other. She knelt down as he slowly caressed her face with great effort and slid his mask off. Then she leaned in.
You know how they say that you can see fireworks when you kiss the one you truly love? Well, fireworks didn't come close to what Natasha and Clint felt. As soon as their lips touch, they knew they were goners. Clint ran his hand throught her red unruly hair and she held his cheek. All the tention and lust over the years was poured into this one passionate, ever lasting kiss. The world turned to nothing, but just the two spies, a bird and a spider, Clint and Natasha, sharing this one breathtaking kiss. They did not care who watched. All they cared about was each other and that's how it would be to the very end.
Clint started to get weaker and weaker until his kiss was just the slightest press. Natasha almost pulled away, but with the last bit of strength, Clint whispered in her ear, "That was for all the times I should've kissed you. I love you Tasha, always have."
Then the heart monitor made that long, continuos beep.
