Chapter Seventeen

"22 hours guys, so get comfortable," Leland says getting into the driver's side.

"That's a long time to be stuck in a car with you people." Chloe jokes. Julia hits her arm and she smiles. "I was just joking." She shrugs, Julia shakes her head at her.

"I'm doing music, but will change it every so often." Leland states and Layla mumbles something next to him. "What was that?" He asks looking in his rearview mirror at her.

"Nothing babe." She says putting a smile on her face.

"Suuurrre." He replies and looks to see if Analyze and Jack are ready. Jack nods his head and Leland begins to pull out. Taylor not wanting to talk with anyone pulls out her phone and puts in some earbuds.

Austin sees Taylor ignoring everyone and wonders why. He feels like it was something he said a couple nights ago, but doesn't know what it would have been. "Austin." He hears someone almost yell his name. He looks over and sees Layla looking at him.

"Yeah?" He asks not hearing whatever she had said.

"How many years do you have left of schooling?"

"Two more and then it will be eight. Why?" He asks realizing that he has no idea what topic everyone's on.

"We were just going over how many we had. Taylor and I still have three years left, but we only had seven years to begin with. I might be able to pull off only two years, but then I have to jam my schedule, and then I'd probably fail." She says and he shakes his head.

"Layla, fail. Yeah, when the world ends." He says and she blushes.

"That's not true. I've failed things before." She says and he crosses his arms.

"Like what?" He asks and she goes to talk, but then takes it back.

"When...I had...no...."

"That's what I thought. Even on pretests, you don't fail, so don't even go there about failing." He says and she huffs.

"Yeah, that's because I know what I can handle in a year." She argues and Austin just gives her a look.

"I'm done this year." Carson says and Austin looks up at him.

"What for?"

"Sales. Plan to make it up to a sales manager and I'm already getting there" He says and Austin nods his head.

"Nice," He says thinking about him doing the job. "I think you're gonna be good at it."

"Thanks, I hope so." He says and Julia smiles at him.

"You'll do great." She says and he smiles down at her. Austin feeling slightly uncomfortable with seeing their moment looks over at Chloe.

"What about you? What do you wanna do?" He asks and she shrugs.

"So far I want to be in cosmetology." She says and he nods.

"Maybe you could fix me up sometime." He says and she laughs.

"Oh, yeah definitely. Just give you some highlights and a few touch ups and you'd be looking amazing." She chuckles and he nods.

"I'm game." He says laughing. Layla shakes her head at the two with a smile.

"I would like to see you with highlights," Layla says and he shakes his head.

"Yeah, not so sure about that one. I like just the brown." He says and runs a hand through it. Layla tilts her head and then laughs.

"Yeah, stick with the brown." She says and then whispers something to Chloe. She looks at Austin and then starts laughing while nodding her head. Austin looks at them nervous causing them to laugh harder.

"You women scare me." He says and moves a little away from them and pulling his phone out.

"Good." They both say in allusion.

"Creepy." He says and opens a game.

***

"I hate this game so much," Austin says tossing his phone onto the empty seat beside him.

"You've been playing it for what...three hours?" Layla asks looking over at him.

"Yes, and I still suck at it." Layla reaches over and grabs his phone.

"You played Stack for three hours. Wow you are really simple minded." She says tossing his phone back. He glares over at her and looks at his phone.

"And I only got to 74." He says looking at his record. She laughs and shrugs. "This game is stupid." He says and exits out of it, just as he goes to go into another app is phone shuts off. He tries the power button, but nothing happens. "Oh, crap, my phone's dead." He says and looks up towards the front.

"Layla did you bring a car charger?" He asks. She nods. She digs in her bag and hands it towards him. He finds his cord and plugs it into the charger. He then unbuckles and carefully crawls to the front.

"What are you doing?" Leland asks glancing down at him.

"My phone's dead." He says and plugs it in. Leland smiles and shakes his head.

"All from Stack." Austin glares at him.

"It addicting when you get so close to beating your high score." He mumbles. Leland just laughs and then tries to pay attention to the GPS. Austin goes back to his seat and stares out the window. He watches as cars pass them, as they get off the highway, then back on, when they go through a back road, and back to the highway.

He turns his head and sees everyone's asleep. Layla's laying across two seats, Julia has Carson's head in her lap, and Chloe's in the back seats. He looks to the front and can't tell if Taylor's awake. She still has headphones in and hasn't moved. "Austin, can we switch?" Leland asks needing sleep.

"Yeah, sure." He begins unbuckling. Leland pulls over and they switch quickly. Austin looks back and sees Jack driving. He thumbs up, so Austin pulls back onto the highway. He watches the GPS carefully so he doesn't make a wrong turn, but is annoyed that she won't shut up. "Stupid thing." He says tapping the screen. He ends up making her louder and he huffs. "Fine, you win." He says and shakes his head. He hears light laughter from the side of him and looks over. "You think it's funny?" He asks with a smile.

"I don't understand why you and Leland have so many issues." She says and grabs the GPS off of its holder. After she mutes the lady she puts it back on the stand. "Better?" She asks and he nods.

"Much, I was ready to throw it out the window." He says and Taylor laughs. Austin smiles and glances over at her. He notices her being more open and likes that she's acting like before. He still wants to know what was wrong but isn't going to ruin her mood. "I heard you have three more years of college, what do you wanna be?"

"Radiologist Technician. What about you?" She asks and he smiles.

"Pediatrician." She turns towards him with wide eyes. "Shocked?" He asks and she nods.

"Just not what I expected." She says and he nods.

"Most people say that, but I didn't think you'd be one to be a radiologist technician." He says and she shrugs.

"Wait, if you want to be a pediatrician you knew all the words that Layla were using before." She says and he smiles with a nod. "But you didn't say anything." She says and this time he's the one to shrug.

"It's was a thing between you and Layla. Didn't want to ruin it." He says and Taylor stares at him. He keeps glancing over at her, but she's still staring. "What?" He asks with a laugh.

"Just you." Is all she says before looking out her window. She knows he looking at her confused, but keeps her head towards the window. She sits there thinking about what he said, that he knew the real her, but he doesn't. She wants to tell him about her anxiety and her fear, but saying it out loud makes it real. Makes everything seem worse, and then he won't be the same around her. He'll act like Leland and Layla, always worried.

She glances over at Austin and sees him lightly bobbing his head to the music. A small smile appears on her face but is gone as she thinks about telling him. She sits in her seat going back and forth with herself. Pros are that then he'll know her, the real her, but what if he sees her differently, or she starts to have an attack just talking about it.

In the end, she can't say it, she just can't get the words out of her mouth. Instead, she takes the easier way out and puts headphones back in. She closes her eyes and tries to go back to sleep.

Austin notices that Taylor seems to be in a battle with herself. She opens to mouth and then closes and he can't figure out why. He sits in his seat trying to figure her out, but can't. He needs to her to just talk to him and doesn't understand what he did to make her feel like she can't. He shakes his head and tries to focus on the road. Tries to keep his thoughts at bay and just make it to Arizona before confusing himself even more.
