Chapter Three

"Does everyone have their bag?" Leland asks before they all walk up to the building. They nod and walk into the little place.

"Hi, welcome the the Great Smoky Mountains. What can I help you with?" The lady at the front asks with and over the top smile. Taylor ignores the lady and her brother's voice and looks out the window.

She stares out into the trees. She sees the sun just coming up and the mist that's still on the ground. She stares at the little river that runs through the trees. "Taylor." She looks up to see her brother motioning for her to come over. She jogs as she realizes everyone's already out. "Come on slow poke." He says.

"Really?" She asks and then starts running. He's stares at her back before running to catch up. Taylor runs as fast as she can with the backpack bouncing, but her brother catches up and grabs her.

"Yes really." He says with a cocky smile.

"You and your long legs." Taylor says out of breath. The rest of the group is talking while catching up to us.

"Don't know why you race with him." Layla says swinging her arm around Taylor.

"Because he's a brat and if I wasn't so short I could beat him." She says glaring at her brother.

"Keep telling yourself that." Leland says. Taylor turns towards him and trips over the bumpy trail. She lands on her butt and groans. Leland grabs her hand and pulls her up. "You good?"

"Yeah," She says rubbing her back.

"Learn how to walk." Layla says. Taylor looks over at her and the pushes her. "You lead the way." She says looking down at the trail. Layla begins walking in front of her and she follows behind her.

The rest of the group spreads out along the trail.

"Remind me who decided to go hiking?" Chloe asks bending over on her knees.

"Wasn't it Julia and Carson?" Leland asks.

"Don't blame us." Carson says with raised hands as Chloe glares at them.

"You said it was a good idea." Austin says.

"It seemed like one." Carson says back taking a breather.

"You all are so out of shape." Layla says stopping to wait for everyone. Taylor stops behind her and looks back at everyone. Leland's leaning against a tree and the rest of the group is doing similar things.

Taylor walks around Layla and walks up to the cliff. She drops her bag and looks over the edge. She watches the water crashes to the pond below. The water isn't crystal clear, it's got more of a dark blueish color.

She lays down on her belly and moves towards the water. She reaches her hand out and water splashes her. "Trying to get yourself killed again?" She hears from behind her. She turns and looks up at Austin.

"I won't get hurt." She says looking back down at the pond. Austin lays down about a foot from her and looks down.

"And this doesn't terrify you?" He asks holding onto the edge tightly.

"No, why are you?" She asks glancing over at him.

"Yes. One slip and I could be dead." He says looking back down. "And that's a long drop." He says and pulls himself further from the edge.

"Afraid of heights?" She says not looking up.

"Afraid of the fall so yes." He says looking over at her. Her hair is pulled into a high ponytail and she doesn't have any makeup on. She's in a dark purple long sleeved shirt and black leggings with tennis shoes on.

Taylor feels his eyes on her and turns to him. He smiles before looking back to the forest. She gets off the ground and dusts the dirt off. "My brother will panic if I'm gone to long." She says grabbing her backpack and beginning to walk back to them.

Austin gets up and follows after her. "There you are." He says as she comes around into his view. He sees Austin come up behind her and he looks back at his sister. He grabs her arm and pulls her to him. "What were you two doing?" He asks in an accusing tone.

Taylor looks back at Austin. "Really Leland?" She says shaking her head. "I was looking at the waterfall and he joined me." She says walking over to Layla. "I'm going to kill him one of these days." She says. Layla looks over at Leland confused.

"What'd he do?" She asks glaring over at him.

"Being overdramatic about anything and everything." She says.

"I'll be back." She says before walking over to him. Taylor sits down on the trail and Chloe comes up to her.

"Hey." She says.

"Hi," She replies back.

"Looks like your brother's getting ripped a new one." She says sitting down next to Taylor. Taylor looks up and smiles.

"I love her sometimes." She says. Leland then walks over to Taylor.

"I didn't mean to accuse anything, I just worry about you." He says holding out his hand. Taylor grabs his hand and he helps her up.

"I know, but I'm fine and if someone does something you and Layla will be the first to know." She says. They smile and he gives her a quick hug.

"Ok, is everyone ready to start hiking again?" Leland asks. He gets grumbles for responses. Everyone gets off the ground and begins walking again. She watches as the group beings walking and sees Leland walk up to Austin. She watches as Austin shrugs at her brother. They continue to talk back and forth for awhile and it ends with them laughing.

"Taylor are you alright? You're walking a little slow." Ella says from in front of her.

She glances up towards her, "Nope, just enjoying the nature around me." She says trying not to sound bitter.

"We can slow down if you'd like, I mean they are walking kind of fast." She says and Taylor begins to realize why she's talking to her.

"No, I'm fine." She says and picks up her pace. Ella nods and tries to keep up with Taylor, but can't. Taylor walks up to Leland and Layla. "I think Ella's dying back there. Might need to slow down." I say and they both look back.

"Where is she?" Layla asks stopping. Taylor turns to show them, when she's not standing there anymore. "Ella." Layla says walking back. Taylor follows confused.

"I slipped." She yells back. Layla jogs and sees Ella on a little platform off of the cliff.

"Oh my god, ok. Ella don't move, we'll go get help." Layla says and turns back to everyone.

"Taylor you're the fastest to make it back. Go and get help." She says and Taylor shakes her head.

"Leland is faster."

"He can't run for a long time like you. You have like superman endurance. You need to go, now." She says. Taylor looks down the cliff and sees Ella's bleeding. She may not like the girl, but she's not going to let her get seriously hurt. Taylor turns and begins running back the way they came.

She knows that they've been hiking for miles and makes sure not to start off to fast. She keeps her pace pushing herself as she starts recognizing things.

She doesn't know how long she's ran, but she finds the building they went to. She runs in and takes in breath after breath. "Our...friend fell....needs help." She gets out. The lady nods and begins to call on the phone. Taylor sees a bubbler (water fountain for most of you) and takes a few sips not wanting to cause herself a gut ace.

"Ma'ma, can you take us to your friend." She hears from behind her. She nods not looking up at the person. She takes a breath and turns. She sees three men and knows they're EMT's. She quickly walks out of the building and they begin jogging back to where they were.

The men keep quiet and try to stay with her. She sees them as they round a corner. The men run towards Leland and Austin as they see they're carrying Ella. How they got her Taylor doesn't know. They set her down at the guys begin to examine her while asking questions.

Taylor takes a seat on the ground trying to catch her breath. She feels a wave of dizziness come over her. Layla sees Taylor on the ground and rushes over to her. "Hey, drink this." She says knowing she's got to be dehydrated. Taylor grabs the water bottle and brings it to her lips. Taylor drinks the rest of the bottle still not feeling that great. "You should eat something. That was a lot of running. Did you even eat anything this morning?" She asks with concern.

"Granola bar." She replies earning a disapproving look from her friend. Taylor watches as her friend digs in her bag looking for something. She pulls out a sandwich and unwraps it for her. Taylor grabs it and takes a bite. "Eww, is that grape jelly?" She questions handing the sandwich back.

"Yeah, just eat it you baby. I don't need you to have to be at the hospital too." She says, but Taylor shakes her head.

"That's gonna make me puke." She says trying to get the taste out of her mouth. She hates grape jelly.

"I've got a turkey sandwich." Austin says holding it out to Taylor. She looks up at him and Layla takes the sandwich before handing it to her.

"This good enough for you baby?" Layla asks. Taylor smiles a little before nodding and taking a bite out of it.

"Thanks." She says after swallowing. Austin nods his head.

"Ok, we need to get her back to the ambulance. You are welcome to follow, but can't ride with her." One of the EMT's say. They nod and everyone begins to follow behind them as they carry Ella on the stretcher, except for Layla, Austin, and Leland because they're surrounding Taylor.

"What's wrong?" Leland asks looking down at his sister.

"She burned way more calories that she ate. She's gonna be dizzy and I don't think she can make it walking back to the building. She'll pass out from exhaustion." Layla says.

Taylor shakes her head slowly and looks up at her brother. "I can walk just fine. I just needed a little break." She says and puts her hands on the ground to help her up. She pushes and wobbles on her feet. Leland wraps his arm around her.

"Yeah, you're totally fine to walk." He says sarcastically. Taylor glares at him. "Ok, get on my back." He says letting go of her side and bending down. Taylor gets up and he stands. "You weigh more than I remember." He says causing Taylor to smack him. He chuckles and Taylor rests her head on his shoulder.

She closes her eyes feeling tired and immediately falls asleep.

"Ok, hang on." Leland says leaning forward to realise some weight off of his back.

"I can hold her for a while, I mean we are falling behind." Austin says. Leland looks over at him with a glare.

"Leland he didn't mean it that way. He's just trying to help." Layla says noticing that he was about to blow up.

"Fine, but if you drop her you'll never walk again." He warns leaning down. Austin leans down next to him and then Layla and Leland get her on his back. After a lot of moving her around they get her to stay without falling off. She moved a little, but stayed asleep the whole time.

The four of them begin walking to try and catch up with the back of the group. Once they get to the parking lot everyone else is in waiting by the van. "What happened to her?" Chloe asks looking at Austin.

"A lot of running with little to burn. She'll be fine, just exhausted. What did the EMT's say?" Layla asks opening the van door.

"She has a mild concussion and a nice cut on her leg, but they don't think it's that bad." She says. Layla nods her head before motioning Austin over. He walks over and carefully with Leland's help they get her in the back.

"She's out." Julia says.

"It's like.... running a marathon after not eating anything for two days and the body's not used to that much running." Layla says getting into the passenger seat. "You guys get what hospital they took her to?" She asks. Analyze nods before putting it into the GPS.

Leland hops into the driver's side while everyone else gets in. Austin sits next to Taylor and it's not long before she falls into him. He doesn't push her away, but knows that he's getting eyes from her brother. He doesn't look at him, just grabs a blanket and puts it over her.

"Can you stay back with her?" Layla asks Austin. He nods his head and she smiles. "Thanks." She shuts the door before running up to the rest of the group. Austin looks down at Taylor. Her head is now in his lap and she's curled into a ball. He watches as she takes in a breath and then lets it out. She's peacefully dreaming.

She turns and Austin holds his breath hoping she doesn't wake up. He doesn't want her thinking he made a move on her while she was asleep. He already knows she thinks he's a little weird and this situation wouldn't help.

He sits there staring at her wondering why she didn't want to come on the trip. Layla practically forced her, but Layla's never said anything was different with her. She seemed like a normal college student. Taylor starts coughing which interrupts Austin thoughts. She slowly sits up covering her mouth.

She looks around confused and when she can see clearly see she's Austin's face. She looks at him questioningly. "You were out so Layla had me stay in the car with you. We can go in to see how Ella's doing if you'd like?" He asks in a slight rush of words.

Taylor cracks her back and lets out a yawn before nodding. She opens the door and takes a step out. She falls back and Austin catches her by the arm. He steadies her and she blinks a few times. "Good?" He questions.

"Yeah, thanks." She says walking forward. They walk into the waiting room and Taylor takes a seat next to her brother. She curls into his side and he puts his arm around her protectively. "So, what's going on?" She asks as another yawn escapes her mouth.

"Layla and Chloe are in there with her. Her parents are gonna be here soon and then we'll go back on our road trip. We don't know if she'll be coming back with us." He says.

Taylor nods and looks at Carson and Julia. Julia's past out on him and he's leaning to side also asleep, but he still has his around around her. Taylor smiles at them and looks over at Jack and Analyze who both look like they're about to pass out as well. Taylor watches as people come into the hospital and then leave.

It's a while before her parents show up. "How is she?" Her mom asks looking at Leland and Taylor.

"Fine, she has a mild concussion and a cut on her leg. She got lucky." Leland says. Her mom looks relieved and looks to see everyone asleep except for them.

"Where is she?" Ella's dad asks.

"Um...I forgot the number. The lady at the front can tell you." They walk up and then go to find their daughter. After a few minutes Layla and Chloe come back.

"They don't want her to get overstressed, so now it's just us nine." Layla says looking at everyone.

"We can go to a hotel and get a good sleep before our next stop." Leland says standing up. Taylor groans as she isn't warm anymore. He begins waking everyone else up.

They all get back into the cars and drive to the nearest hotel. They get one big room and cram in it. There are three beds, a pull out couch, and a loveseat. Carson and Julia called a bed along with Jack. Analyze said she'd sleep with the perv, but if he screams not to worry it's just her cutting his balls off for trying something. Layla jumps onto the other bed and Leland follows after her.

This leaves Taylor, Chloe, and Austin. Taylor turns to go to the loveseat, but Chloe's already asleep on it. She looks up at Austin. "I can take the floor." He says grabbing a pillow.

"No, I'm not going to make you sleep on the floor." She says feeling bad. She takes the cushions off and begins pulling the bed out. After grabbing a blanket for her she lays down.

"Are you sure? I can just-"

"It's fine Austin." She says tiredly closing her eyes. He walks over to the light and turns it off.

He then carefully walks back to the bed and lays down making sure to give Taylor enough space. She has her body turned away from his, but he stays towards her. He notices that she takes deeper longer breaths and realizes it must mean she's asleep.

He turns on his back and stares up at the ceiling wondering why he came on this trip. The first time he meet her he liked her, why did he think it was going to be any different this time? And with that thought in his mind he falls asleep.
