Chapter Twenty-four

"Do you want to drive?" Austin asks as he realizes there's only about an hour before they make it to Chloe's parent's house. Taylor shakes her head feeling panic set in her stomach. "Why?"

"I'll crash into another car with kids in it. They won't make it and the parents will be mad at me. Then more people will think I'm a murder, they'll all stare at me and come at me." She speed talks feeling her heart rate pick up.

"How did you drive so much in the beginning?" He asks realizing that if these thoughts were there before why'd she drive.

"I made sure to focus on what you guys were saying, that every time I had the urge to slam the car to the left or right I thought about your parents and how sad they'd be. I made sure to keep tabs on what you all were saying and Leland and Layla are good at keeping me distracted. They've been doing it for years. I don't think they know that I know when they try to help or distract me, I know every time, but it helps them to think they're helping me." She says and tilts her head up to him. "You help though, your voice is calming. It helps block whatever new thought is coming." She continues to look up at him and he feels slightly dizzy.

He glances down at her beautiful face and forces himself to look back at the road. She watches as his eyes go to each mirror before going back on the road. "Why did you pay for this trip?" She asks. He looks down at her pretending not to know what she asked. "I know you paid for all the hotels and are paying for almost everything, but why?"

"Well, I'm not really paying for it. More of my Dad is." He says and she continues to look up at him. "I told him that we all wanted to travel and that it would only happen if we could raise more money. I didn't want him to pay for everything, I was just telling him what was happening, but he said that he wanted to use the money he'd been saving. He can't travel or be on an airplane so instead of it sitting he gave it to me." He says and goes to shrug, but doesn't because she's resting on him.

"Why can't he fly?"

"He has a heart issue and being that high up causes issues with it and my Mom would never go anywhere without him." He says a smile coming to his face thinking about his loving parents. Taylor nods her head and looks back to the road.

"I don't like farms or bugs." She says seeing the big farm come into view. Austin laughs and smiles down at her.

"It's only a day." He says and she nods her head.

"But there are a lot of bugs." She says with a slight whine in her voice.

"You poor little thing," Austin says dramatically. She glares over at him causing him to start laughing. Taylor lifts her head off of his shoulder as he pulls into the bumpy uneven driveway. Once it's parked Austin takes the keys out and opens his door. He looks back and sees Taylor staring ahead. "Taylor." He says. She snaps her head towards him and he holds out his hand. She grabs it and hops out of the car. He closes the door and starts walking when he feels her hand grab his. He holds it and looks over at her confused. He looks straight and sees it's not just Chloe's parents, it's a huge group of people.

"Taylor breath in and out," Layla says after pulling her around the house.

"They....they were all....looking right at me.....expecting an answer." She says trying to take in breaths as she speaks.

"I know, it's ok. Just in and out." She says and hears as someone comes around the corner. She tenses until she realizes it's Austin. He comes over and sits down next to shaking Taylor. He looks up to Layla and mouths 'I've got her, you can go.' She looks at him for a good minute before nodding her head and walking about around the farm.

"Taylor, can you look up at me?" He asks and she shakes her head keeping her head in her knees. She's shaking and he can hear her ragged breaths. "Taylor look at me." He says and she slowly brings her head up. She looks at him and he smiles. "There are those eyes." He says and wipes her cheek as a tear rolls down. "It's alright, there are a lot of people here. It's making me uneasy too." He says and she nods her head. "There's a bug on your arm." He says. She looks down and slaps the bug.

"Gross." She says grabbing grass to wipe it off of her arm.

"Damn bugs right?" He asks and she smiles nodding her head.

"I told you I don't like bugs." She says and he smiles. He looks at her and sees as her tears begin to dry and her breathing becomes normal again. "Can...can we go for a walk?" She asks not wanting to go back to the party.

"Sure." He stands up and holds out his hand to help her up. They hold hands as they walk through the grass to nowhere in particular. Taylor swings there hands and laughs as she feels like a little kid. Austin stops walking causing Taylor to look up at him confused. She looks forward to where he's looking and sees four horses. "Shouldn't they be in a stall or a pen somewhere?" He asks baking up.

"Bunnie and horses, is there anything else that's cute that you find scary?" She asks. He looks over at her with a glare and she laughs. She lets his hand go and starts walking towards the horses. "Taylor. What are you doing?" He asks worriedly.

She waves him off and slowly walks to the horse. The white and brown one sees her first. She watches as Taylor approaches her. "Hi, girl. Why aren't you a beauty." She says and holds her hand out. The horse puts her nose her to hand. Taylor smiles and rubs her nose. "See that guy over there." She says and points to Austin. "He's scared of you. Should we go show him you're not scary?" She asks. The horse justs bobs her head up and down and side to side. She makes a little noise and the horse follows. She does it to keep it's attention on her as she walks to Austin.

"Taylor, what are you doing?" He asks staring at the horse. Taylor stops and puts her hand on her mane.

"Come here." She says. Austin shakes his head. She huffs and grabs his arm and pulls him over to the horse. She grabs his hand and puts it on her back. "See, she's not going to do anything," Taylor says with a smile as Austin looks up at the beautiful horse with a smile of his own. She looks over at the other three horses and one of them makes a noise and shakes hits head.

Taylor grabs Austin's hand and the horse goes trotting back to the other three. "Amazing." He says watching them.

"It really is." Someone says behind them. They both jump and turn to see Chloe's dad. "You shouldn't have done that young lady. What if she got spooked?" He asks walking closer to them.

She looks down at her feet and says, "Sorry."

"It's fine, just warning you now, not all horses are like our beautiful Maggy over there." She looks back at the horse. She likes the name Maggy for her. "Everyone's getting some food, I thought I'd let you know before it's all gone." He says causing the other two to laugh lightly.

"Alright, thank you." Austin says. The man nods his head and starts to head back. Austin and Taylor follow behind him.

When they round the corner of the barn Taylor stops in her tracks. She sees the big line of people all laughing and talking with each other. She feels pressure on her hand and looks down. She looks up at Austin and he nods his head. "It's going to be fine." He says. She nods her head and grips his hand tighter.

The go to the end of the line and the people in front start a conversation with them. Taylor just nods her head and keeps a smile on her face as Austin does the talking.

"See everything's going good." Austin says bumping Taylor with his shoulder.

"I guess." She says taking a seat by the bone fire. He takes a seat down next to her and frowns towards her.

"What's going on?" He asks and she shakes her head. "Don't tell me you're fine. What going on?" He asks again.

"There are people everywhere. In every direction, one slip-up and they all know. They all see me as fragile and talk to me like I'ma child." She says and smiles as a group of people walk past her.

"It doesn't matter if they know, and they won't. You're doing great and even saying a few words." He says and realizes she doesn't believe him. "If anything they just think you're shy, what's wrong with being shy?" She looks over at him and smiles.

"I like how hard you try." She says and takes a bite of her sloppy joes. Austin smiles and picks up his to have it all fall into his lap.

"Really?" He says looking down at his shirt. Taylor beings laughing as he tries to get it off of his shirt and back onto his plate. "Oh, so this is funny?" He asks as she nods her head. He shakes his head at her, but smiles as she can't stop laughing.

"It's...not even...that funny." She says between laughs. He begins laughing once she starts to complain about her stomach hurting.

"What's wrong with you two?" They look up and see Leland's face.

"I have sloppy joe all over my shirt and she can't stop laughing because of it." He says controlling his laughter.

"Laugh attack, don't you just love them Taylor?" He asks smiling at her. She shakes her head and puts her hands to her cheeks.

"My cheeks hurt." She says but continues to start laughing. She begins to slow it down but then looks at Austin causing her to start up again.

"Taylor got a laugh attack?" Layla asks taking a seat by them.

"Yup, over slipped sloppy joes," Leland says and she smiles. Austin looks over at him with raised eyebrows.

"She gets into these fits of laughter and it doesn't seem to stop for like ten minutes. It's funny, sometimes she even starts snorkeling." Layla says as Taylor tries to get her laughter to settle down.

Six minutes later and Taylor's just chuckling every once and awhile. "My body is so messed up with all of our time changes. I don't know when I should be tired and when I should be awake." Layla says yawning. "It's only half past six and I want to just take a huge nap."

"Less than four hours and we can sleep," Leland says putting his arm around her.

"Fun, fun." She mumbles. Taylor watches as another person pulls up to the driveway. The girl quickly gets out of her car and goes running. Taylor watches as she runs right up to Chloe, she plants a kiss on Chloe and Chloe stares at her shocked once she pulls away. Everyone else begins to quiet down to hear what's happening.

"Wh-what are you doing back?" Chloe asks staring at the woman in front of her.

"I'm done. I did my time with the marines, I'm home for good." She says and Chloe stares at her. "I know that we left saying everything was fine, but I can't. Not without you, Chloe. I need you and everyone knows that I still love you. Please, just give me your time and hear me out." She says pleading to Chloe. Chloe looks at her and then a smile creeps onto her face. She puts her hands up to the woman's face and pulls her towards her.

The two kiss and everyone around them starts to cheer and clap. The two pull away and look around at the audience. "Alright, how's everyone been. I know you'all missed me." The woman says causing everyone to laugh.

Taylor looks at Layla with question. "That's Amanda. The woman that Chloe loved with everything she ever had. They ended on good terms because she was leaving to go to the marines and Amanda wanted Chloe to find someone that would always be around. I guess she's going to be the person that's always going to be around."

Chloe drags Amanda over to them and they both have big smiles on their faces. "Ok, so Layla and Leland, aka Taylor's bff and her big brother, then Austin which is Layla's cousin," Chloe says and Amanda nods her head trying to remember the names.

"Taylor, so I guess you are my competition." She says and Taylor smiles shaking her head.

"She's all yours." She says and Chloe laughs.

"Good, because I didn't want to hurt you." She says with a smile. Taylor nods her head and then Chloe's dragging her to meet other people.

"Well, she's different," Austin says, Taylor nods her head in agreement. Another small group of people come over and starts talking to everyone. Julia and Carson come over with a woman. She's holding a little boy and girl's hand, while Julia's holding a baby in her arms.

"Awe, who is this?" Layla asks seeing the baby.

"That one is Sara, Jackson, and then Ashley." The woman says looking at each child as she said there name. Julia hands the baby over to Layla. Layla holds her and makes little noises.

"She's so cute." Layla says with a smile.

"Yeah, until she gets hungry. Would you guys mind watching her while I get these two some food?" She asks. Layla nods her head continuing to speak to the baby.

"We'll come help," Julia says and pulls Carson along. Layla phone begins to ring.

"Taylor can you hold her for a sec." She asks but puts the little girl in her arms before she can say anything.

"Well....I..um." She looks down at the baby. She smiles at her and then grabs Taylor's hair. Taylor smiles and pulls her out from her small hands. She taps her finger on her nose causing her to wrinkle it. Taylor smiles and does it again. The baby giggles with her.

Austin watches as Taylor plays with the baby. He's glad she's having some fun. He watches her tickle the little baby and then she stops to watch her laugh. Taylor plays with the baby for a few more minutes before she shakes her head. "Layla, can you take her?" She asks holding her out. Layla looks at her confused but takes her anyways with a smile.

Taylor's hands get shaky and she seems to be battling against herself. Austin puts his hand over hers. She looks over at him and he nods towards the baby. "It's ok. She's fine." He says and Taylor looks over at the little miracle. She nods her head and tries to focus on something else.

***

"Just the room on your left." Chloe's Mom says to Taylor. Taylor nods her head and opens the door. It's a simple room with one window, and twin sized bed and a small dresser in front of the bed. The walls are a cream color that makes the room look big, and the bright blue sheets seem to go well with the walls. She takes a seat on the bed and bounces a little. She looks around the room and doesn't like being in it alone.

Too many things begin to fly through her head. She stands up and walks to the door. When she opens it, Austin's walking by. She grabs his arm pulls him into the room and closes the door behind him. She shakes her hands out and begins pacing back and forth. "Taylor, hey, calm down. What's wrong?" He asks looking at her worried.

She walks straight towards him and puts her arms around his waist. He puts his arms around her and holds her to his chest. They stand like that for a good ten minutes before Taylor backs up a little. "I can't stay in here by myself. It's a nice room and all, but when I think of just sitting here all alone it causes-"

"Taylor, it's ok. I didn't want to have my own room anyway." He says grabbing her hand. She nods her head and releases a breath. "I did drop my bag outside when you pulled me in here though. Is it alright if I go grab it?" He asks. She nods her head feeling stupid that she pulled him into the room without any explanation. He lets go of her hand and walks to the door. He grabs his bag and lightly tosses it onto the ground. "You wanna talk about it?"

"No...no, no." She says shaking her head.

"Ok, let's get some sleep." He says. She nods her head and realizes her bag is still in the van. She looks at what's she wearing and grumbles under her breath. "Here." He says and hands her a sweatshirt of his. She takes the sweatshirt and smiles.

"Thanks." She says and turns around. She takes her shirt off and then her tank top. She goes to put the sweatshirt on, but a warm hand touches her side.

"It's looking a lot better." He says, his breath against her face.

"Yea,..yeah, it's healing fast." She says and pulls the sweatshirt over her head. She turns back to him and stares into his eyes. He brings his hand up to her face and she leans against it.

"Taylor-" They hear a knock at the door. Austin pulls away as Layla comes walking into the room. She looks at them and notices a blush on both of there faces. She smiles and realizes she walked in on something.

"These are your yoga pants. We must have mixed them up. Do you happen to have mine?" She asks laying the pants on the bed.

"No, my backpack is still in the van." She says and Layla nods her head.

"Alright, night guys." She says with a smile and then closes the door as she exits. Austin turns back to Taylor with a smile. She smiles back before grabbing the pants and changing into them.
