coffee dates

Two women sit at a round oak table at the back of a cafe.
Warm amber light glows around her Mother. Its light forms into a halo against her blonde hair. A small porcelain mug is cradled in her hands.
She sits directly opposite her Mother, slumped in her wooden chair. Her dark hair absorbs the amber light and her nails clatter against the rim of her coffee cup.
"Honey, relax." Mother hums taking a sip from her mug.
She stops and uses silence as a response. Her heart races. She starts to fidget. She looks everywhere other than the glass belled door or the spare empty seat next to her. She tries to still herself by watching the centre of the table. Black scratches and old tea stains coat the unglossed surface.
The room smells like oak and coffee. She is suffocating under the rich scent. Her mouth tastes of bile.
She wants to leave. She reaches for her phone for relief.
"Honey, no." Mother pouts, flapping her hand in her face.
"I am not a dog." She slips her phone back in her pocket. Her head is ringing, and she's sweating.
Mother glares over the rim of the cup. "He will be here."
She remains silent. Minutes feel like hours and the silence is killing her. "This is too much." Her heart beings to ache and the room starts to blur. "I want to go."
Mother puts the mug down, reaching her hand out "Honey, you are just panicking. You wanted to do this."
"Not anymore!" she snaps. "I don't want to anymore! I don't care anymore!". Tears bubbled at her waterline.
The whole cafe falls silent. Heads peer around with concern written on their faces. She wants to die at that moment. Big bright eyes watching her added to the oncoming storm.
"You will regret it." Mother hushes still glowing but now with a strained smile.
She wipes her eyes.
People go back to their own business.
"Like you did."She bites.
Both of the women slump back in their chairs. She becomes twitchy.
"I am going home." She said staring at Mother, her fingers itching to get her coat off the chair. The room starts to spin like a tornado and her breathing became heavy. "Please." Her mother does nothing so she stands.
hum-hum
She checks her phone. A text. It was her boyfriend. "Good luck today x" She relaxes slightly but guilt starts creeping into view. Pocketing her phone, she leans over to kiss her mother on the cheek.
ching-a-ling
She checks her phone again but nothing, no notification. She looks to her Mother.
"My love, you didn't leave fast enough." Mother gasps looking at the door. Her hands cover her mouth as if she is muffling a secret.
She looks up and her heart stops. Everything stops. She is dead, alive, asleep and awake. She blinks a few times and her body became stiff. He looks nothing like she imagined.
He is taller and bigger, muscle wise. He doesn't look as old as she thought he was. He scans the room and sees her mother. His eyes gloss for a second then rolled to her. Surprise and happiness seem to wash over him. Hers is pale. She wants to run.
He walks over with a bouquet of yellow and pink roses. "Hello, Buttercup" he smiles softly, he is tense standing to attention.
"My name isn't Buttercup?" she whispers bitterly watching the floor. Her mother holds her hand smiling with tears in her eyes
"Oh, your Mother didn't tell you?" He looked over to her warmly. "Haha... I...I used to call you Buttercup... when you were a baby. Sorry, I am a little late. Oh, and these are for both of you." He hands the flowers to her. She just stares at them. Her mother takes them mouthing a thank you.
He looks at his 'Buttercup'. Her beauty has stayed with her from baby to grown woman.
She, apprehensively, sits back down in her seat.
He copies her with the spare seat. "You look so beautiful." he smiles tears rolling around in his own eyes. "I couldn't wait to finally meet you." He laughs. His laugh is another difference to how she imagined. It's a proper grinning belly laugh.
She smiles back. Her body calming into a frozen state.
He smiles warmly "I think we should catch up, yeah?"
"Yeah, you have missed a lot." She meekly smiles.
"I know I am sorry. I am so so sorry." He said.
