Chapter 4

Rachel sat at the edge of the booth, keeping as much distance from Vlad as the curved leather seat allowed. The club's crimson light moved over him in slow pulses, catching the sharp angles of his face and the faint green shimmer beneath his eyes. He looked almost relaxed now, one arm stretched along the back of the booth, but Rachel knew better. Everything about him seemed controlled, from the stillness of his body to the careful way he watched her without seeming to watch at all.

He had offered her a drink twice. She had declined both times.

It was not that she thought he needed alcohol to hurt her. After the alley, she knew he had far stranger methods at his disposal. But accepting anything from Vlad felt like handing over another small piece of control, and she had already lost enough of that in the last twenty-four hours.

Across the room, Estella moved through the dancers with deliberate grace. Her red hair caught the light each time she turned, and her attention returned to Vlad again and again with open longing. Rachel tried not to care. She had not come here because she wanted his attention. She wanted answers, and if that meant tolerating his smugness, Estella's glare, and the uneasy pull beneath her ribs, then she would tolerate them long enough to find a way out.

The pull had not faded since she sat down. If anything, being this close to Vlad made it worse. It moved through her like a low current, not painful, but intimate enough to make her uncomfortable. Every so often, she felt the strange urge to look at him, as though some hidden part of her was waiting for him to speak.

She hated that feeling most of all.

A man approached the lounge, and Rachel's attention shifted at once.

He was not as physically imposing as Vlad, but there was something arresting about him. His eyes were the first thing she noticed, a vivid blue that seemed too bright for the club's darkness. His features were refined rather than harsh, his smile charming enough to seem almost reassuring. He radiated warmth, or at least the careful impression of it, which made Rachel immediately suspicious.

She had learned very quickly that beautiful men in this world came with fangs.

"So," the man said, stopping before her with an amused glance at Vlad, "you must be the young woman who has chained herself to my friend."

Rachel felt heat rise in her face. "And you are?"

"Darius." He took the seat beside her with easy confidence, close enough that Rachel shifted slightly before she could stop herself. His gaze dipped to her hand as though he intended to take it, but he paused and chuckled instead. "Curious, isn't it? You somehow tied yourself to him, yet he has not managed to charm you."

"He hasn't even tried," Rachel said, glaring at Vlad.

Vlad's mouth curved. "You would know if I had."

Rachel ignored him and turned back to Darius. "Can you tell me what I am? Or what this connection means?"

Darius studied her for a moment, and the warmth in his expression became more thoughtful. "Every creature knows of the bond. What is unusual is how you formed it. I have never seen someone establish one so suddenly, or without understanding what they were doing. I do not know what you are yet, but there may be a way to find out."

Rachel stiffened. "You say that like I did something wrong."

"You formed a bond without his consent."

"I didn't form anything on purpose. He invited me over, stared at me like I had ruined his life, and then followed me into an alley."

Darius glanced at Vlad.

"She makes it sound far more dramatic than it was," Vlad said.

Rachel stared at him. "You had fangs."

"I still have fangs."

"That does not make it less dramatic."

Darius's mouth twitched, though his tone remained calm. "The bond is usually an act between two creatures. It is often tied to affection, loyalty, desire, protection, or love, depending on the nature of those involved. It normally requires intent from both sides. That is why this is strange."

"I didn't intend anything," Rachel said. "I didn't even know creatures existed until last night."

Darius looked at Vlad again, more seriously this time. "I think she is genuine. She really does not know."

Vlad folded his arms, his eyes fixed on Rachel. "That complicates things. I am bonded to someone who knows nothing of our world, cannot control her shield, and has already drawn attention to herself. This is the last thing I need with government officials snooping around."

Rachel caught the edge of frustration in his voice, but beneath it she heard something else. Concern, perhaps, though not necessarily for her. If the bond was feeding from him, if it made him vulnerable, then she was not the only one trapped in this.

"I didn't want this either," she said. "But I can't break it alone. If there is a way to figure out what I am, then tell me."

Darius leaned closer. His blue eyes seemed to brighten in the red gloom, lit from within by something Rachel could not name. Then the blue darkened, deepening towards black, and his attention shifted to her throat.

Rachel's hand moved instinctively to her neck. "No. Absolutely not. Why do men with fangs keep looking at my neck like it's an invitation?"

"Essence is the key," Vlad said, impatience sharpening his voice. "We identify what you are through your essence."

Rachel turned on him. "And that requires biting me?"

"For vampires, blood is the easiest path," Darius said gently. "All beings draw strength from essence in one form or another. Vampires draw it through blood. Others feed through fear, pain, devotion, desire, worship, or whatever their nature requires. Your essence is unlike anything Vlad has encountered, and after last night, we made discreet enquiries. No one seems to know what you are."

The word discreet made Rachel uneasy. "Who exactly did you ask?"

"People who understand the old world," Darius said.

"That is not an answer."

"It is the safest answer."

Rachel looked between them. Her life had been ordinary before Vlad. Difficult, stressful, and not always satisfying, but ordinary. Now two men with glowing eyes were discussing her essence in the back of a club as if her body were a locked box they had every right to open.

"Hand me a knife," she said. "I'll give you a drop from my finger."

Darius gave her a sympathetic smile. "A finger prick will give us blood, but not enough essence to reveal your nature."

"Convenient."

"I understand your concern."

"I don't think you do." Rachel started to stand. "Then I guess I'll stay bonded to this piece of shit, and neither of us will have an answer."

Darius caught her hand before she could step away.

A strange surge moved between them.

Rachel jerked back, but Darius did not release her immediately. The contact was warm, almost soothing, and tiny sparks of pale light gathered where his fingers held hers. Purple flickered beneath her skin in answer.

"How can you touch me?" she asked.

Darius looked down at their joined hands with interest. "Your shield is not fully raised. You do not control it yet, but it seems tied to your instincts and emotions. You want answers, so some part of you is allowing me closer."

"That is not comforting."

"No, but it is useful."

Rachel pulled her hand free. "How do I know you're not trying to get me to lower my shield so you can eat me?"

Darius glanced towards Vlad. "He told you he eats every creature who forms a bond with him, I assume?"

"He strongly implied it."

"He might have left out that some creatures feed through bonds and can use them to weaken or kill. In our world, intimacy is rarely harmless. Some beings survive by making others love, worship, desire, or trust them. You do not feel like a predator, Rachel, but you are affecting his essence all the same."

The idea that Vlad's aggression might be fear, or at least self-preservation, unsettled her. He looked far too powerful to be afraid of anything, but the tension in his jaw suggested Darius was not exaggerating.

"A creature can bond with you to kill you?" she asked.

"Yes."

"That's horrifying."

"That is our world."

Vlad shifted beside them, his impatience giving way to something darker. "My hunger is getting worse. It is taking more restraint than I would like not to drain someone in this room."

Rachel's stomach twisted, not only with fear but with a strange echo of need. Since waking, she had felt empty in a way food did not touch. "I've been exhausted all day," she admitted. "Like something is missing."

"That could be the bond," Darius said. "Or the awakening of your nature."

He reached towards her cheek, slower this time, giving her the chance to refuse. Rachel held herself still, though every muscle in her body wanted to retreat. When his fingertips brushed her skin, a visible current sparked between them, pale light threading through violet.

Darius's eyes darkened fully.

Rachel's breath caught. "Your eyes are black."

"I know."

"How do I know you're not going to attack me?"

"You don't," he said, which was not the reassurance she wanted. Then his voice softened. "But if you feel threatened, let your fear raise your shield. It has already proven capable of pushing us away."

Rachel looked towards Vlad. "And you're just going to sit there and watch?"

"I would prefer he finish before your accidental bond starves us both."

"How touching."

Vlad smiled without warmth.

Rachel turned back to Darius. The idea of letting a vampire draw blood from her was absurd. Twenty-four hours ago, she would have laughed at anyone who suggested it. Now she sat between two creatures who spoke of essence, shields, and bonds as if these things had governed the world all along and she had simply failed to notice.

A flicker of light caught her eye.

Tiny white lights moved along Darius's arm, gathering beneath his skin like stars beneath water. Rachel found herself staring as they brightened, and the warmth around his hand deepened. A soft purple glow joined the white, winding through it as though her body had recognised his touch and answered without permission.

Darius lifted his hand to her cheek again, pausing just before contact. When she did not pull away, he touched her gently, then slid his fingers to the back of her neck. The movement was careful, almost reverent, but Rachel did not forget the fangs or the hunger behind his darkened eyes.

He leaned in and brushed his lips against hers.

The kiss startled her more than it should have. It was gentle, warm, and threaded with an emotion so convincing that Rachel had to remind herself it might not be real. Magic, charm, compulsion, whatever he wanted to call it, she could not assume any feeling in this place belonged entirely to her.

When Darius pulled back, the club seemed to fade around them. The music dulled. The crimson lights disappeared into darkness until only he remained clearly visible, glowing softly in the void that had swallowed the room.

Rachel's pulse quickened.

"Darius.

"I won't take more than I need," he murmured.

His lips moved to her neck. His hold became firmer, and the warmth in her chest grew in answer. The graze of his fangs against her skin sent both fear and fascination through her. He did not bite immediately. He kissed the side of her throat, letting her feel the danger before he crossed the line.

Rachel should have pushed him away.

Instead, caught in the strange glow surrounding him, she tilted her head without fully meaning to. The movement felt like surrender, and the moment she realised that, fear sharpened through her. Her shield stirred, but before it rose, Darius pierced her skin just enough to draw blood.

Rachel inhaled sharply.

The pain was brief. The sensation that followed was not. Energy rushed through her, bright and disorienting, flooding her body as Darius drew on something deeper than blood. Purple light expanded around them, spilling over his shoulders and down his arms until it burned too brightly to ignore.

Darius broke away with a gasp as the light repelled him.

Rachel pressed a hand to her neck, breathing hard. "That was not what I was expecting."

Darius looked shaken. His black eyes faded slowly back to blue. "Unfortunately, that was far from normal. I apologise if I went too far."

"Did you feel it?"

He nodded but did not answer immediately.

Vlad's voice cut through the moment, cool and sharp. "Come on, you two. Get a room."

Rachel ignored him, keeping her focus on Darius. "What am I?"

Darius looked down at their hands, where faint violet light still flickered over his skin. His expression shifted into confusion, then fascination. "I am not sure. Your essence is unlike anything I have encountered. There are old stories about creatures who fed on human affection, love, and desire, but most dismiss them as myth."

Vlad moved closer, his patience clearly gone. "What is she?"

Darius did not look away from Rachel. "I think she might be an Aphrodite."

For a heartbeat, Vlad was silent.

Then he laughed.

The sound was sharp, disbelieving, and deeply insulting.

"Are you serious?" he said. "The Aphrodite vanished ages ago. This girl is nothing but a naïve child with a dangerous shield."

Rachel's frustration snapped through her fear. "Stop calling me a child, you blood-sucking leech."

Vlad's laughter faded, though the amusement remained in his eyes. "There she is."

Darius frowned at him. "She is not a succubus. Succubi do not hold purple energy, and they cannot draw essence from someone they cannot touch. Rachel's shield should have prevented any kind of feeding, yet she reached through yours in the alley and mine just now."

Rachel looked between them. "So not every creature has a shield?"

"No," Darius said. "Some have defences, but not like yours. Vlad could not touch you because your shield recognised him as a threat. It may not protect you from everything, especially if another creature approaches through trust, desire, or affection."

"That is deeply unhelpful."

"It is honest."

His gaze lingered on her with a warmth that made her uneasy. "You can compel, but not in the way vampires do. I felt it when I touched you. It was not force. It was more like wanting to believe you, wanting to protect you."

Vlad's eyes narrowed. "She is enchanting you."

Darius blinked, as if the words pulled him back to himself. His hand withdrew from Rachel's. "Possibly."

Rachel stared at him. "Possibly?"

"You are affecting me," Darius admitted. "Not enough to control me, but enough that I should be careful."

"Fantastic," Rachel said. "So I'm dangerous and incompetent."

"That is one way of putting it," Vlad said.

She glared at him.

Darius leaned forward, his expression more serious. "Different creatures live on different energies. Vlad and I are sustained by blood because blood carries the essence we need. Others feed from fear, grief, pain, lust, devotion, or dreams. Aphrodites were said to draw strength from love and desire, though the stories vary."

Rachel let out a disbelieving breath. "Aphrodite was a goddess. Greek mythology, not a creature type."

"Human mythology often remembers creatures incorrectly," Darius said. "A name survives, the truth changes shape around it, and eventually people call it religion, legend, or fiction."

Vlad leaned against the table, his voice colder now. "The stories say Aphrodites were hunted by a creature so dark he abandoned his mortal form. Because there were so few of them, they survived by surrounding themselves with armies, kings, lovers, and worshippers. They could make cities adore them, and adoration is a powerful defence."

Rachel's stomach tightened. "You're saying I bonded to you because something is hunting me?"

"I am saying that may be what your instincts did," Darius replied. "You came near a powerful creature, your nature woke, and some part of you reached for protection."

"I didn't know I needed protection."

"That does not mean you didn't."

The words settled uneasily between them.

Rachel remembered the dreams. The castles, temples, palaces, and cliffs. The thing that always found her. The certainty that she had been running for longer than one lifetime could hold.

Her mouth went dry. "What is hunting me?"

Vlad's expression shifted. The mockery faded, leaving something guarded and unpleasantly serious.

"If you are what he thinks you are," Vlad said, "then the stories already answered that."

Darius shot him a warning look. "Do not."

"What?" Rachel demanded. "Do not what?"

Vlad ignored Darius. "The creature that hunted the Aphrodites did not simply kill them. He consumed cities looking for them. He destroyed anything that sheltered them. If he senses you, your ordinary life will not matter. Your job, your friend, your little exhibition, none of it will protect you."

Rachel's hands tightened in her lap. "You don't know anything about my life."

"No," Vlad said. "But I know how quickly lives end."

Darius's voice softened. "Enough. She is exhausted."

"I am not exhausted," Rachel said, though the lie was obvious even to her.

The room tilted slightly, and she gripped the edge of the booth. Darius's touch, the bite, and whatever had passed between them had stirred something inside her, but it had not restored her. If anything, it had made her more aware of the emptiness beneath her skin.

"You look like you need to feed," Darius said.

Rachel recoiled. "Do not say it like that."

"That is what it is."

Vlad smirked. "I could assist. I have heard Aphrodites make exceptional companions."

Rachel's face warmed with anger. "What is your problem?"

"You are my problem." Vlad leaned closer, his eyes glinting red. "Your purple light is tangled in my shadow, and until you break this bond, you and I are stuck together. I am hungry, you are ignorant, and something far worse than me may soon know you exist."

Darius's expression hardened. "Do not frighten her for sport."

"I am not doing it for sport." Vlad's gaze remained on Rachel. "She needs to understand what she has walked into."

Rachel met his stare, refusing to let him see how deeply his words had unsettled her. "Then help me break it."

"I am trying."

"You have a strange way of showing it."

Vlad's smile returned, but it lacked its earlier ease. He gestured towards the edge of the lounge, and Estella appeared almost immediately, as if she had been waiting for permission to return. She slid against his side with practised familiarity, her hand settling on his chest.

Vlad stood, still watching Rachel. "Darius can play teacher for now. I need to deal with my hunger before your little accident makes me unpleasant company."

"You're already unpleasant company," Rachel said.

Estella's eyes flashed with irritation, but Vlad only laughed under his breath.

"For now, enjoy your light-hearted companion." His gaze dropped briefly to Rachel's throat, where Darius had bitten her. "When you get bored, you will always be able to find me."

"Because of the bond," Rachel said.

"Because of the bond."

Vlad took Estella's hand and led her towards the rear of the club. As they disappeared into the crowd, Rachel caught the red flash of his eyes one last time and felt the thread beneath her ribs pull taut before easing again.

She hated that she noticed.

When she turned back, Darius was watching her with a gentleness that felt almost more dangerous than Vlad's cruelty.

"There's something about you," Rachel said before she could think better of it. "It feels like we've met before."

Darius smiled faintly. "Maybe you are hungry."

"That is not an answer."

"No, but hunger can make many things feel familiar."

She studied him properly now. He looked perhaps late thirties, though she suspected age meant very little among creatures like him. His skin held a warm tan that seemed unusual for a vampire, and his light brown hair was pushed back in a way that made him look less severe than Vlad. He seemed safer, but Rachel was beginning to understand that safe was not the same as harmless.

"I don't feel hungry," she said.

"Are you sure?"

"I've been asleep almost all day."

"Sleep will not replenish what your creature needs. Once you bonded to Vlad, your nature woke. Now it needs to feed."

Rachel looked away, unsettled by the word creature being applied to her. "Why would it only happen now?"

"Perhaps proximity to Vlad triggered it. Perhaps your nature was waiting for a threat powerful enough to wake it. Or perhaps something that kept you hidden is weakening." Darius moved closer, his voice lowering. "There are many possibilities, and none of them can be solved tonight."

"I want answers."

"You have had more than enough for one evening."

"That is not your decision."

"No," Darius said. "But your body is making its own argument."

Rachel opened her mouth to argue, but dizziness swept through her before she could speak. Darius caught her arm, and the contact sent a soft pulse of warmth through her. This time, the feeling was not enough to frighten her. It was almost comforting, which made her trust it even less.

He leaned in and kissed her gently.

Rachel stiffened at first, then felt the purple glow stir around her. The kiss deepened, and with it came a wave of soft electricity that loosened the tension in her limbs. She knew she should pull away, but her body felt heavy, and her thoughts had begun to blur at the edges.

When Darius finally drew back, he looked almost regretful. "You need to rest."

Rachel gripped his arm before he could stand. "No. I need to understand what's happening to me."

His expression softened, but his eyes darkened again. "You are stubborn."

"Apparently."

"This is not punishment, Rachel. Without replenishing your energy, the consequences could be fatal for both you and Vlad."

"What are you doing?" she asked, but the words came out weaker than she intended.

Darius's thumb brushed the inside of her wrist. "One of my abilities is influence through blood. I am sorry, but you will hurt yourself if you keep fighting your own body."

Panic flickered through her. "No. Not here."

"I will not leave you here."

"I can't trust you."

"I know."

That answer should have frightened her more, but the warmth spreading through her body was already pulling her under. She tried to stand, but her legs would not obey. Darius held her securely, not cruelly, but with enough strength that resistance became useless.

"It's all right, little dove," he said. "I will make sure you get home safely."

Light bloomed around them, bright and soft, swallowing the red glow of the club until Rachel could no longer see the dancers, the lounge, or the shadows where Vlad had gone. For a moment, all she knew was warmth and the steady hold of Darius's arms.

Then the familiar scent of her pillow surrounded her.

The softness of her mattress rose beneath her body.

Rachel tried to open her eyes, but sleep was already closing over her. Her last thought was not trust, exactly, but exhaustion. The kind so deep it stripped away argument, fear, and pride.

Somewhere far away, the thread beneath her ribs pulsed once.

Then she surrendered to the dark.
