Chapter Five

Without another word, Damien stomps on the gas pedal and adds an extra 50 miles per hour to our already illegal speed. I am thrown back into the leather seat, the material not enough to soften the impact that knocks the wind out of me. Carefully, I sit up and crane around again to glance at the black van. Its gaining on us.

"Damien!" I shriek. "They're catching up! What do we do?" I start to panic, my breath coming in short gasps. What will happen if they catch us?

"Calm down Kyla," Damien reassures me in an even tone, not taking his eyes off the complex maze of cars he is weaving in and out of. "They will not catch up to us. I've had many close calls with the T.A.K. so far, and I have not been caught in a car chase yet. I do not plan for this to be the first time I do so either."

I look at him with fearful eyes, surveying the confident way he is maneuvering the car through traffic. I suppose it does look like he knows what he is doing. My breathing slows down to a more normal pace, but I am still far from calm.

Damien takes notice of my slowed breathing. "Are you calmed down yet? It will be harder for me to concentrate with you hyperventilating next to me."

I glare at him, but the normality of the action calms me down. Resignedly, I nod.

Damien increases our speed again, now going close to 200 miles per hour. The other cars almost appear to be standing still, the optical illusion a result of our speed. I glance at the black van again, sure that it will be far behind. My stomach sinks as I realize it is the only car that looks like its in motion, and it is still almost right behind us. I can see the person behind the wheel, a giant muscled man, one that looks like he belongs as some super villain's goon. With a laugh, I realize that he sort of is. A government worker dedicated to eradicating humans? Humans with a special power, but humans nonetheless? He definitely could count as a super villains goon.

Damien gives me a look of confusion before resuming his marked concentration on the road. I guess I must have laughed out loud. I inwardly shrug my shoulders. Doesn't matter if he thinks I'm going crazy. Right?

I turn to look out my window and with a jolt see the black van. I whip my head back around at Damien, but he is already increasing our speed. The only problem is that the black van is doing the same. Then, mercifully, the van is trapped, with cars in the front and on both sides of it. Slow moving cars.

I relax my shoulders, even though I didn't know I was tensing them. I watch the blur of colors that is the highway through the windshield.

I see the red car a second too late to warn Damien. Its blinkers are off, and it is merging into our lane going close to the same speed as we are. I barely have time to think about how odd this is before it is too late. I hear a strangled cry escape from my throat as I realize that there is no way we are going to be able to avoid it. Damien hits the brakes, slamming me once again into the hard leather seat, but he hits them too late. Our speed propels us forward, and the last thing I see before the world goes dark is the candy red exterior of the car, and its government license plate.

Sorry to leave you guys on such a cliff hanger, but I've had this scene in my head since I began the book. I have really wanted to write a high speed car chase, and I knew that if I wrote one it was going to end in a car crash. Let me know what you thought of it!

I know this chapter is really short (607 words excluding the author's note) but don't worry. This Friday is a double update! I'm not evil enough to leave you on such a cliff hanger. Or am I? I should probably choose my words wisely, because I haven't finished writing the book yet xD
