I need to escape. The thought comes to my mind as I am marched back to my room in my sopping wet clothes, each heavy step worse than the last.

I'm dying here. Sure they feed and water me like a dog, but that's not why. My soul is dying. I can't find reasons to smile anymore, to be my Maman's rayon de soleil, her ray of sunshine. The only sunshine I've seen since I was captured has been in that simulation.

I look around as I trudge forward, happy for my wet clothes. They give me a reason to walk slowly and check for possible escape routes. No doors that don't have key cards, no vents above me. The guard gives me a suspicious glance through his curly red beard. I stop looking at the ceiling.

We reach my cell. The bars are lifted for the instant it takes the guard to shove me towards my bed.

He wipes his hands together. "That should do it aye." He says this rather loudly, then he looks around to see if anyone's watching.

He leans in close to the bars. "Psst. Lass. Come here." His whispered voice has a thick brogue, and is much kinder than any of the other guards I've met. I'm still suspicious though. Why would he be nice to me?

I slowly get off my bed.

"There's a good lass. Come to Finnegan. I won't bite ye know." Finnegan laughs, a hearty chuckle that makes me want to smile. But I don't. I'm not sure if I'm able to anymore.

I make it to the bars, and Finnegan starts whispering at the speed of light. "Okay lass, you'll have to trust me here. I'm to help you escape."

My eyes widen in shock and I take a few steps back. Oh no. I'm not falling for this again. The first time a guard said he was helping me escape, he led me straight into a torture chamber, where Dr. Barnes was waiting.

"No lass, I'm telling the truth. I know nothing of what the dirty rascals have done to ye, but I want no part of it."

I shake my head as vehemently as my soggy body can muster. Finnegan sighs.

"If that's how ye feel lass, then I'll leave ye be. I'm very sorry that they've got ye brainwash—" His words are cut off with a jolt of electricity, lighting up his whole body and sending fireworks all around.

Dr. Barnes steps into view, clapping slowly. "That was a great show. You infiltrated the ranks of my guards, appeared dedicated to the cause, yet you work for Metis." The last word is spat out like a curse word. He turns to someone out of view and nods. The electricity around Finnegan surges brightly before disappearing, and he collapses to the ground. Smoke rises off of his form, and when he doesn't move, I realize that he's dead.

The doctor regards me, but there isn't as much hatred in his eyes as usual. "You have actually done well this time. You didn't accept his offer of escape." He snaps at the person who's still out of view. "We reward those who are loyal."

I might have laughed if I was able to remember how. I will never be loyal to these pigs. They can pretend to be scientists all they want. It doesn't hide their true nature. I bite my tongue when I see a fluffy white towel and a change of clothes being handed to me.

Dr. Barnes is smiling now. "Remember this, Kyla." He starts walking away, leaving only his next sentence behind him.

"We aren't always evil."

A/N: Yeah, these chapters are late, but I blame school. Updates are most likely going to come late as I get adjusted to being a high schooler. *Gasp* I know right? I'm a weird freshman who sorta kinda knows how to write. 

Carine's point of view has really been short, but in my rewrite - which may or may not be put on Wattpad, depends on whether or not I self-publish - everything will be evened out. 

I have actually finished this book. Right now its actually just making sure I can get to a computer in order to publish a new chapter for you guys. (I've been doing so well with that haven't I)
