Moon

The moon is on top of the sun, the two astral bodies gripping each other like lovers as the bright rays of light flare out around them in every direction. Both are well aware this will be the last time.

The first thing the kit smells is the milk of her mother.

The second is blood.

It is very ugly. If not for her instinct to suckle on her mother's milk, she would have gagged and died.

That would have been preferable. At least then her sister would be strong.

In the wake of the deaths of the previous sun and moon, the mother cat decided to name her children new names.

"This one is Lunarkit." For the moon.

"This one is Solarkit." For the sun.

The sun is much brighter and warmer than the moon, but the moon gets to be closer to the stars. Those who love the sun will never touch it. They are stuck on the earth as it falls away from the sun, and it is stuck in the sky where no one will love it.

***

On the fifth day, Solarkit got stuck in the sky.

She didn't come down.

***

On the tenth day, Lunarkit opened her eyes and there was still blood on the ground. One of the older kits, Featherkit, was sitting at the edge of the camp watching the forest. No one noticed the blood.

"The earth is crying red," Lunarkit told her mother.

Her mother shook her head.

"The earth is screaming," Lunarkit told her father.

Her father did not hear her.

"The earth needs to be cleansed." Lunarkit told the leader.

The leader looked off into the distance. She was in pain.

***

"Who was buried in the earth?" Lunarkit asked a moon later.

No one would tell her.

She asked everyone. Featherkit answered her. "I was there when they died."

"When who died?"

"There was a prophecy." Featherkit said. "The sun and moon collided and in the light, everyone could see the darkness inside of each other."

"What did it look like?"

"Foxes. They were made out of shadows."

"Was it terrifying?"

"The darkness is never scary. It's what they did with it."

***

In two moons, Featherpaw became an apprentice.

Lunarkit was lonely.

She decided to get a gift for her friend, who knew about the darkness and protected her.

She went into a field of aster flowers, but all of the seeds stuck to her.

When she tried to get them off, she fell into a tunnel where the earth screamed. There were bones beneath her feet and no light. As she ran away, the seeds fell into a dead place and there was life again, life woven together from moonlight and the last traces of sun.

How the flowers grew where there was nothing to grow from, she never knew.

***

Featherpaw did not like flowers.

***

Featherpaw did not like she-cats either.

***

Featherpaw was later found over a cliff in the old territory.

Her body was cold and unfamiliar.

It smelled like the moon.

***

Lunarpaw ran away into the darkness again.

***

The darkness spoke to Lunarpaw.

"Why are you crying?" it asked.

"I am broken." she replied. "I will never love or be loved."

"We are all broken." the darkness whispered. "Only the universe is full, because the universe is made of all the broken pieces. It reunites them."

"I am not the universe." she said.

"You can be part of it."

***

Lunarpaw became part of the darkness.

There were lines on the walls.

There were flower seeds in the tunnels.

Sometimes there was even gold coming from outside.

Gold is not just light underground.

It is a marriage of the below and the above. It is now both.

It is worlds looped together.

Lunarpaw was still looking for the light.

***

"You are not a warrior." Talonstar said.

So they made her a tunnelkeeper.

***

They were very interested in her.

"Lunarshine," echoed the walls of the tunnels.

"Lunarshine," echoed the camp.

"Lunarshine," echoed her head.

His mouth came dangerously close to her ear and he whispered.

He wanted to see the world.

She had no need to see everything. She was already a part of it.

Her part was to unite the dark and the light.

***

She left the seeds of aster flowers over his grave when he died.

It was not his fault.

There were rogues in the territory.

Another young and foolish tom had been watching her.

***

They didn't plant anything over his grave when he died.

***

No one found his grave.

***

No one found the grave of the next cat either.

***

They were getting in her way.

***

"Lunarshine," echoed the darkness.

The darkness was a cat.

The darkness was light.

The darkness had aster flowers growing through her eyes and she was beautiful.

***

Can you fall in love with someone who does not exist?

***

What about someone who no longer exists?

***

What if you died, too?

***

The cats were listening to the nightmares now. There were voices in their ears and ghosts inside their eyes.

She told them not to go into the tunnels.

***

What if the cat with flowers inside her eyes didn't like she-cats either?

***

There were too many voices now.

***

The cliff.

***

Too obvious.

***

The next tunnelkeeper had no idea what he was doing. That didn't matter anymore.

***

She's here.

***

She doesn't really have aster flowers inside her eyes. Her eyes are gold like the sun and Lunarshine is the moon. The cat was standing with her mate. Lunarshine had disposed of toms before.

***

"I need you," said Lunarshine. "I need you to save me."

She had already saved so many lives. Lunarshine had already taken so many.

***

Ashleap stood in front of her mate. She was cautious.

"I need you to save DragonClan. There is a world that needs us."

***

Ashleap said yes.

They were one.

Everything was darkness and friendship and sin and foxes and the sun and the moon fell over each other again.

***

Is that all?

That is all there is to see.

There's so little.

There was not very much to say.
