Oddities
Your eyes fly open, and you sit up, shivering in the cold air. An air conditioner whirrs from somewhere on the ceiling. Cold metal rests in your hand, and you stare down at the gun in your hand as the light above flickers and swings, scattering light around the concrete room. You wonder where you got the gun and what you ought to do now.
Five minutes. That's how long you've been awake in this room based on your watch. Who knows how long you've been lying here unconscious on the floor. The watch face casts a soft light across your hand, the neon green lighting up the numbers. 4:55 A.M. It occurs to you that you have no idea how you got here or what happened before you got here.
You look at the other object that was in your right hand. A porcelain doll. Just like you did with the gun, you examine it. Once again, you can't remember where you got it from either, but it stares back with unblinking blue eyes. An inviting smile paints its face, and the black silk hair lies disheveled around its shoulders, making its skin seem pale like the pallid coloring of a corpse. A simple nightgown-like dress adorns the doll. The lights gleam off the blue glass eyes of the doll, giving the object a strange glint in its eyes as though it knows you're watching it.
The room you're in is otherwise unoccupied. There are no visible doors or windows, though a staircase leads up to the wall above. Your eyes roam the room, and you continue to try to shake off the grogginess and the strange lack of memory. Something seems to itch in the back of your mind, and you think you might've done something terrible, but you can't remember.
The light swings again somewhere high above, shedding light on another corner of the room. The air conditioning clicks off. You stiffen, listening for any other noise in the silence. Only your breathing and the sounds of scuttling of mice meet your ears. You set down the doll, pushing yourself into a crouch. As you do so, your hand lands in a warm puddle. You look down, straining to determine what you have put your hand into. The lights reflect off the dark liquid, which almost looks like oil on the black concrete floor. There isn't enough light to determine what it is, so you bring your fingers to your nose, hoping to determine what it is from the smell. A pungent iron smell fills your nose, and you gag, standing quickly. Blood. What did you do and why can't you remember?
There's a sharp bang somewhere toward the staircase, and light drips down over the stairs. Fog fingers its way down the stairs, and you run to the bottom of the stairs, hoping there might be answers. A door has appeared in the wall where you hadn't seen it before. A silhouette stands in the door, framed by eerie green light. The fog has a funny, dank smell, and you shiver.
"Who's there?" You step onto the first step, holding out the gun.
There isn't an answer, and the silhouette vanishes as soon as you speak. You wrap your shaking fingers more tightly around the gun's grip. Keeping your finger near the trigger, you creep up the stairs, eyes peeled for any sign of movement.
You finally make it out of the stairwell. All you can see for miles are tombstones and the chilling fog that wraps the world around you in a muffling whiteness. The green light you'd seen earlier pervades the fog from the right, and the jagged spires of a run-down house rise into the air. You take a wobbling step toward the house then stop. Who knows what might be in the house? There's a scream from the direction of the house, and you stiffen, your arms going rigid and your finger on the trigger. You think you see a silhouette in the fog, and it looks much like the one you saw earlier. There's another scream. You unfreeze and rush toward the house where the scream came from.
The silhouette materializes into a solid form in front of you. It's a woman. She has jet black hair and blue eyes. You gape at the pallor of her complexion. She grins, revealing needle-sharp teeth. You swallow hard, wondering what caused the screams and whether there are more like her around. Blood stains the shoulder of her linen dress. The green light casts crazy shadows across her face and lights her eyes with an unholy fire. Your hands shake as you keep the gun trained on her. She takes a step forward. "Stay b-back," you stammer.
She says nothing, but she takes another step toward you. You shoot the gun at her, but she's gone before the bullet can connect. Your eyes widen, and you spin, looking for a silhouette or the woman. Something sinks into your neck, and you drop the gun, screaming now too. The pricks of two needle-like objects dig in deeper, finding your vein. Liquid fire spreads through you, and just before you black out, you finally remember what happened to land you here. Your eyes squeeze shut, tears dripping down your cheeks. Why me? You try to bat away the hands pinning your arms to your sides, your focus slipping in and out. Darkness veils the world, and you feel your entire body go limp. Then your mind is gone, and you're out.
