Page Forty-Two
The drive was filled with nothing, but ambient noises; wind whistling and trees shaking. Now and then I'd look in his direction to see him staring dead ahead with an expression that I can't read.
It doesn't take us long to arrive at his house and just like at the midnight building, he doesn't open the door for me.
Before I get out, I let out a sigh, and my voice trembles as I do so. I have to practically run to catch up to him.
"Okay, I know that you're angry," I say as I hurry into the house before he shuts the door. I turn to face him, "But at least treat me like a human being."
He locks the door before turning to face me with a blank expression, "Get your belongings and leave."
Without another word, we head up the stairs. As we ascend, I can't help but stare at the woman in the painting. I shut my eyes as I shake away the thought of telling him what happened.
I follow him to the room, then I make a beeline for the walk-in closet. I quickly change out of her clothes, then dresses into my work clothes. I fold her clothes neatly in the designated drawers, then I exit out to see him sitting on the edge of his bed with the rotary phone to his right ear.
I quietly shut the door as he speaks, "Are you joshing?"
I stand awkwardly at the door with my hands by my sides and my fingers bouncing on my thighs. He looks in my direction, rolls his eyes, then speaks again.
"Give me a moment." He pulls the phone away from his ear to cover the microphone, "What? Go home."
I reluctantly leave the room, then out through the front door. I hug myself to preserve my body heat when the night air hits my skin.
I shut the door behind me, then I head down the path to my house. The trees sway rapidly and the rough wind lifts, then spin the fallen leaves. A few minutes pass and I'm facing my front door.
I rummage through my flower pot near the front door, then lifts my key out of the dry dirt to unlock the door. Upon entering the house, I'm greeted by the sound of my rotary phone blaring from the kitchen.
I shut and lock the door, then I rush to the kitchen to answer the phone. It's on the counter with a bowl of fruit to the left.
"Hello?" I say once I have the phone to my left ear. I set the key in the wooden bowl to the right of the phone. My eyes widen, "Wait, Jenny, calm down. Melody wouldn--" I pause as she speaks.
"I'll be there soon," I say plainly before quickly hanging up the phone. I grab my key and frantically leave for my car.
As soon as I get in, I see Bobby speeding away from his house. I do the same after tucking the key into my shirt pocket. The person on the other end of his phone must've been an orderly telling him what I was told. He lacks the maturity of a man his age so much so, that he can't distinguish being passive from being immature; instead of putting his anger aside to discuss with me what he was told, he kept me in the dark.
We make it to Happy Volts in less than an hour. We park, then hurry out of cars to practically race for the side entrance.
"Bobby, stop it," I yell out agitatedly while tugging on his shirt sleeve.
He snatches his arm away, then turns to face me. I look up at him as he speaks, "Don't touch me, don't talk to me, don't come near me. I'm done."
I watch as he walks away. I've gone from angry to enraged. I repeatedly clinch, then relax my fists. I try to keep my teeth from grinding as I walk down the hall behind him.
We enter the recreation room to find Jenny and David Boomer standing by the patients' wing talking to each other.
They look in our direction, then they stop talking to face us. Jenny speaks first, "Cody told us that you two were on a date, but I wanted to call before the boss arrived."
"Where is she?" I ask as I fold my arms under my chest. They share nervous glances and I bounce my gaze from one to the other. "What?"
"We had to put her in psych." David finally speaks, "She almost killed Carolina with a pocket knife."
"Jesus." I shut my eyes as I speak.
"How did a knife make its way in here," Bobby asks them.
"We don't know yet, but we need to figure that out before Mr. Matthews does, and takes a pick at who he wants to let go along with said person," Jenny says while looking at him. She turns around to open the doors.
We follow her down the dimly lit hall. It's warm and quiet as it usually is during the resting hours.
We make a beeline for the white door leading to the mental wing. Jenny unlocks it, then holds the door open for us to ankle down the hall.
The distant sound of banshee-like screams echoes through the long corridor. Jenny speed walks until she's to my right and the guys are side by side behind us.
"She's in a straitjacket," she hesitantly says while looking at me.
I look at her as we walk, "Well obviously she would be if you put her in here. Jesus, Jenny." I look forward, shaking my head disappointedly.
"What do you expect we have done," she questions with wide eyes and hand gestures signifying a desire for ideas.
"I expected for you to fucking call me before putting her away like a rabid animal," I whisper yell.
"Hey," Bobby yells out. We turn our heads to watch him as he speaks, "They detained her, they called us, no one got hurt. Everything's Jake."
"I would have to disagree," David says. We avert our eyes in his direction as he continues, "Miss. Hopkins managed to stab Miss. Beetlemen in the side before we were able to grab her."
Bobby shuts his eyes from defeat. I scoff incredulously, "You three are a joke."
We look straight ahead as we pass the desk where a chubby orderly is seated behind. She looks over the cheaters which rest on the tip of her long nose, her olive-green eyes watching us as we arrive to the door across from her.
"Here we are," Jenny mumbles meekly.
