Chapter 34
Love in the rain
*****************************************
Every new kiss shared with Onyedikachi opened Obanma's mind, soul and body to a plethora of ecstatic sensations. With every soft nibbling of her lips, stroke of his tongue , gentle caress of her teeth came with a new discovery of how intense her passion could be. She loved the fire he ignited within her and pulled his face closer.
She had almost climbed to his side of the car to get a fill of the sweetness Onyedikachi presented before a knock on the car startled both of them and Obanma was quite embarrassed to find out that it was a police man.
Onyedikachi didn't make any attempt to rearrange himself as he slowly whined down his glass to speak to the man.
Obanma swallowed hard, noting how expressionless the man's face was, tiny dark scars danced around his cheek, his intense gaze made it quite easy to note how broad his nose was. He didn't look Igbo or Yoruba and she squinted her eyes often to capture the name sewn into the chest pocket of his blue shirt.
It felt like an eternity of scrutiny as the man glared at the couple, his gaze wandering from Onyedikachi to Obanma who's breath hitched each time his eyes fell on her. The embarrassment that engulfed her couldn't be tamed by Onyedikachi's reassuring smile.
The policeman surprisingly bared his teeth and broke into a deep throaty laughter and soon Onyedikachi joined in.
Onyedikachi stepped out of the car and surprisingly embraced the police officer. They spoke with such familiarity that left her stunned.
The man finally turned to Obanma and introduced himself as sergeant Major Hassan Abdullahi. She discovered that he and Onyedikachi once worked together over the years at Pace construction company.
"I been see your car from far, I come look am e no dey move. I just tell my boys say make dem wait, e fit be say e don breakdown. I no even know say you dey here with this omalicha"
Onyedikachi chuckled, his eyes never wavering from Obanma who was more interested in her ignominy and the hausa accented police man.
"How are you young lady?" He enquired with a grin and Obanma replied with a nervous smile.
"She is my girl, her name is Obanma" Onyedikachi told Hassan who gave him a strange look.
Hassan got a signal from the other police members and he quickly offered his goodbyes, promising to see Obanma another time.
Onyedikachi came into the car grinning from ear to ear and Obanma was partly irked by his amusement.
"You were so terrified! Ujo! " He declared suddenly, breaking into a very loud and annoying laughter.
Obanma reached out and slapped his shoulder as he kept quaking with laughter
"How was I to know he is your friend?" Her lips closed up in a childish pout and he placed a kiss on her cheek.
"You are such a baby! Anyways Hassan is a cool guy. He used come to the site a lot with our boss, one of the days we spoke and just clicked."
He helped Obanma secure her seatbelt then turned his vehicle on. They knew it was risky to have a make out session beside the road but were carried away by their declaration of love.
" He seems to know about your ways" Obanma began as they drove away as she remembered the look Hassan had given Onyedikachi because of her.
He seemed momentarily taken aback by her words and was terrified that the womanizing impression she had of him would be quite hard to tame.
"Yes I used to have that reputation.... But Mma you have to believe when I say that part of my life is completely behind me."
Obanma gave him a small smile and nodded in approbation. She wanted to believe that he wouldn't go back to his old ways but the fact that she wasn't sure she was ready to be intimate with him left her with a huge problem of what if?
"I love you". She heard him say which caused her gaze that had strayed from his face back to it. He reached out to hold her hand, then gave her a reassuring squeeze before taken his hand back to the wheel.
She felt he had sensed the thoughts that were plaguing her mind. Obanma exhaled deeply then deftly dealt with her fears. Love changes everything, she had heard far too often and was willing to take a long leap of faith. Onyedikachi loved her, it was more than reassuring. It was a pact of protection, tolerance, care and every other thing love stood for. She watched him try to whistle and fail miserably at it.
"I love you too" She finally declared earning a smile from him.
"Isi gịnị? Can you just repeat the words that left that pretty mouth of yours, I didn't really hear them well"
Obanma threw a glare his way and he began to chuckle anew.
"I slightly have this very insignificant penchant for you" She replied with a giggle and he feigned a scowl causing her to laugh.
"I rove you" She tried once more and even he was forced to laugh with her.
"Bebe con croser let me tell you sometin. yunno I have evelytin you need."
Obanma couldn't hold herself as she quaked uncontrollably with laughter. Hearing Onyedikachi mimic the typical Anambra man's accent made him sound much more amusing. The correct placement of the l and r factor.
"Bebe I gat moni, adim lich enwelu m that moni. O mu ka ana akpo ogbuefi one of Nnewi. Importer, exporter! CEO Onyeoma Aluminiun and zinc adi lo m ibua!
Come croser bebe, are you engage?Asa nwa, ugebe oyibo m tellu me. I'm an Anambra man I will take kiaroff you, mesmelize you nwanu idi okay.
Come to me, let me scatter your blain, let me turn ya world alound. I take you to rondon. I take you to Emelika, Eulope!
Babe see how you bring out the Onitsha man in me" He ended on an elated note.
Obanma began to laugh anew when his words replayed in her head.
"I don't think I'm ever going to get over this Ogbuefi"
They drove quietly for a while, each content with admiring the other person and grinning. Onyedikachi took a turn which aroused Obanma's curiosity.
"You're not headed to my place?" She couldn't help but ask as no explanation came forth for few minutes.
"No I'm not.... It's actually a surprise. Let's say I was hopeful that you'd forgive me today and planned towards it"
Obanma felt her cheek get hotter and had to bury her face in her hands to avoid the embarrassment that swarmed around her.
"Don't get too excited bebe, yunno ya man is bad at this suplize thing"
"Please don't just start now" She teased as he gave a throaty laughter.
They arrived a very quiet estate and Onyedikachi quickly rushed down to open the door for her.
"Nwa let me be lomantic for you, I want to be a fool for you" He continued as she stepped out of the vehicle clutching her stomach. Mma had definitely laughed too much.
He excitedly lifted her up, placed her on his shoulder and ran towards the building. Obanma squirmed on his shoulders and he struggled to keep her in place.
"Onyedikachi please put me down!" Onyedikachi replied her request with a "Bebe trust me, hold onto me"
He climbed a flight of stairs and finally appeared in front of the door to a new apartment. He gently placed her on the ground, he had been panting heavily by the time they got there.
Onyedikachi stood motionless not certain of how to describe the surprise to her.
"You know in some places it is considered a taboo to carry an unmarried like lady that" She teased with a smile and he only grinned. She noticed his gaze intensify, it seemed like he was staring for too long and they were standing outside a door which she found a bit uncomfortable.
"Onyi why are you staring at me like tha.."
Her question were cut off by his lips and she could literally hear her brain log off. It seemed the only thing she could understand was the need to hold him as her legs were giving out. He lifted her up still kissing her senseless, he only stopped momentarily to insert his key into the keyhole. Obanma kept delivering kisses to his neck, face, forehead and wherever her lips could find.
She hated that the door was keeping his lips from giving her an overdose of the sensuality it bore.
Obanma nibbled Onyedikachi's nose and he chuckled. They finally made it into the room with her still clutching tightly to his shoulder. He whirled around the room with her in his hands laughing so freely even though Obanma complained of intending dizziness.
He placed a kiss on her forehead and placed her on the ground. She sat on the floor to regain composure while he chuckled.
Onyedikachi plopped down beside her and she playfully punched his shoulder.
He placed a kiss on her cheek then gently turned her to face the room proper as their backs were against the entire apartment.
"Do you want to be my girlfriend Mma?"
She finally caught a glimpse of the letters scattered around a corner of the living room.
"Forgive me.. I love you" She laughed so hard at the picture placed by the side with words "For my sake". It was a picture of Onyedikachi's niece as a baby. She looked so cute and her expression bore some sort of plea.
Obanma's gaze wandered around the partly empty apartment. The upholstery had been set in place, the large Television and several sound theaters arranged in a curvy pattern.
She turned back and sat in front of Onyedikachi, mimicking his sitting pattern with his leg crossed and folded underneath his laps.
"You don't get to coerce me into forgiving you again with Adannaya and you don't get to do my thing"
"I thought it was our thing"
"Onyi do you want me to be your girlfriend?" She enquired with a knowing smile.
"You don't answer questions with questions but I certainly do wholeheartedly want you to be my girlfriend."
"Well if you say so... I'd love to be your girlfriend so that you can take kiaroff me ị ghọta go" She finished in an Anambra accent that sent him attacking her sides with tickles.
The pair lay on the floor laughing silly at how horrible Obanma's Anambra accent sounded.
They turned on their sides so that they could gaze at each other properly. Onyedikachi reached out and caressed her face. He couldn't ever tire of staring at her beautiful face.
She pulled his hand to her mouth and placed a kiss inside his palm.
"There's not much inside the apartment because I wanted us get them together. This is the first surprise Mma and I had thought about it for a while. I want to always come back to Abia for you. My work takes me to different places but knowing that there's a certain place in the country where my heart is grounded, I don't think anything beats that.
I'm not saying you should move in and abandon Kelechi but I wanted us to have a private place like our own home where we could spend time together.
You can keep some of your things here if you want, I'd really love it if you did" Obanma could see how anxious he was to hear her answer but she completely avoided what he had told her.
"What's the next surprise?" She asked getting to her feet and making a poor attempt at pulling him to his.
He followed quietly while she practically toured the three bedroom apartment by herself. They finally got to the kitchen where he had kept all the gifts he had purchased her.
Obanma squealed excitedly when she caught sight of her favorite chocolate. It had been the same she would pester her uncle and aunt about till they relinquished it to her.
She quickly dove in, munching and releasing signs of pleasure.
Onyedikachi watched with amusement as she devoured almost a pack before turning to him to ask
"Onyi I ga ata? Will you eat?"
He shook his head, he actually found that he enjoyed watching her eat like a little girl once more.
"Uncle Nnamdi used to buy these! Lots of them" She declared emptying another packet.
He helped her unwrap other gifts, including a wristwatch and a necklace.
"Onyi this is good! You need to have a taste" She Prodded but he shook his head.
She finally reverted to her question mode, releasing her puppy dog eyed expression for the sole purpose of convincing him.
"Onyi.. I ga eri?" She asked slowly holding his gaze.
Onyedikachi exhaled deeply then took a bar of the chocolate and threw it into his mouth.
"One day I'm going to get immune to that question" He exclaimed while she laughed.
"Ọ di uto, it is quite nice"
She wrapped her arms around him, which he reciprocated. Placing kisses on her hair.
"I love everything. The gifts, the idea of us staying together. You are very thoughtful Onyi and quite lomantic"
He sighed with satisfaction, basking in the comfort that radiated from being in the warmth of her soft embrace.
A loud rumbling thundered outside and Onyedikachi peeked outside. The heavens had suddenly darkened and he was certain it was going to rain. A thought occurred to him and he quickly pulled Obanma out of the kitchen. They practically raced out of the house barefooted. She was quite surprised with his attitude but waited to question him when they got to where they were headed.
Onyedikachi had remembered the last time they played under the rain as children and wanted to recreate the memory. As a little boy Adaugo had paired Obanma with him and when Chijioke began to chase them he had practically pulled her as they raced around the compound. Kicking puddles of dirty water laughing hysterically, while Chijioke kept slipping and falling.
When they got downstairs it seemed the heavens got another message and the sun emerged quickly. They waited for a while, Obanma still oblivious of the reason they stood under the sun.
Within minutes her eyes were squinting and they were sweating beneath the sun which seemed to get harsher by the minute.
Onyedikachi grudgingly pulled Obanma back into the house and explained everything to her. She laughed so hard as it reminded her of the same incident that happened not long ago in the past. Nature never did agree with Onyi
They ate and played series of video games where Obanma ended up thrashing Onyedikachi as many times as possible. It was one of the things she had learnt from associating closely with her elder brother and his video game addicted friends.
They turned in after getting exhausted from series of yelling and arguments over how Obanma's victory was as a result of her feminine charms.
Onyedikachi had pointed out that her body only clad in her singlet and very tight shorts distracted him the whole time.
Onyedikachi fell asleep before Obanma who seemed to battle with insomnia.
The sound of the aggressive pelting of rain on the roof pushed Obanma to her feet and she quickly woke Onyedikachi.
He pulled a shirt from his drawer and put it on while she waited impatiently. His hands had barely come out of the shirt before she dragged him out of their apartment and down the stairs.
With the way she had been screaming, they were lucky that they had been the only occupants of the house because she was certain they would have heard angry admonitions from sleepy neighbors.
Onyedikachi was thrilled when the Droplets of rain hit him, he found himself laughing so hard at the fact that the weather hadn't betrayed him this time.
They ran around the compound screaming like children before Onyedikachi decided playing tag wouldn't be a bad idea.
It didn't require much effort to catch up to Obanma and he whirled her around. He pulled her into one of his hearty melting hugs before capturing her lips in a kiss. They stood there for a long time, content with the kisses they shared while the rain washed over them
Onyedikachi's brain warned him against the cold but he felt a beautiful moment with his Mma was worth a thousand shivers.
After the rain came to a stop, they wandered into the house dripping water around the house and giggling like children. Onyedikachi had slipped on the tiles and almost fell countless times.
Obanma made her way immediately into the bathroom to shower while he waited behind. She peeled off her wet clothes and quickly turned on the hot shower. She had almost begun the bathing process before a thought crossed her mind. She quickly grabbed a towel and stepped out in search of Onyedikachi who was busy running his hands on his arms to keep warm.
She noticed that his teeth were clattering and it occurred to her that the cold might have gotten to him more.
She dragged him to the bathroom and noticed how hesitant he was to enter.
"Mma I can wait till you finish, you don't need to leave because of me"
"I didn't say I was going to leave" She replied with a chuckle. Deep down her nerves were on fire and she knew she was battling with so much embarrassing and discouraging thoughts but she chose to ignore them.
She finally gulped in enough air to utter words that almost sent Onyedikachi's eyes out of their socket.
"Onyi would you like to shower with me?"
